Protecting the highlights to capture stunning sunrise colours | Landscape Photography Nikon D850

- This weekend, we drove down to Albany and stayed at Middleton Beach for a few days. While strictly not a landscape photography trip, the camera is never far away.
On the first morning, I woke up early to a stunning, calm and peaceful morning. The cloud cover was thin and a little broken in areas. This is perfect conditions for sunrise as the early light would have a chance to break through and bounce off the clouds.
It was a short 20 meters walk down to the beach from where we were staying. By the time I reached the water’s edge the sky was starting to light up nicely. I only needed to walk about 100m to get to Ellen Cove where already people had started entering the water for their morning swim.
I found a location with the jetty coming in from the right-hand side leading the eye through the image. I angled the camera so the rocks just in front created some nice foreground interest. Besides the calm seas and jetty, the colour in the sky was going to be a main feature of the image, so it was important to control the light in the sky so the full colour and texture could be captured. To do this I used a Lee Filter 0.9 hard graduated filter to bring down the light and even up the exposure across the image. This allowed me to bring up the exposure to capture the detail in the shadows of the rocks and jetty while not blowing out the highlights in the sky.

Thanks Maen, always nice to get your feedback mate, cheers! 👍
Simple composition, Simply beautiful
Very kind words (simply put), thanks you Sangram!
How awesome were those sky colours. Beautiful images all of them!
Thanks for that Derek, it always exciting when the sky goes off like that. Makes the early mornings all worth it! 👍
I know you have to be 'in it to win it' but maybe you can share some tricks for early sky forecasting, Andrew. I suck at waking early; and obviously it helps to be able to wake up close to a potential photo location like this; but it's early morning shots like yours here that make one want to try to do the same!
Stunning location again mate. Beautiful images 👍👍
Thanks Paul, great location and great light...you can't go wrong, cheers mate! 👍
Great spot - super pics. Well done, JA
Cheers John, appreciate that mate! 👍
lovely shot of my local beach and jetty,

Cheers Mike, I was pretty lucky with the light this morning! 👍
Great video Mark! you got some nice photos there! Think I prefer the last ones with the more subtle sunrise colours still coming through
Thanks Adam, hope you are doing well mate! 👍 The also liked the last shot because of the interest in the rocks and the sunlight relfecting off the jetty, cheers!
You're welcome and I'm good cheers! hope you're good too! Yea the rocks on the edge worked well there!
Perfect and good job

Nice stuff Andrew. Great colours and lovely jetty
Thanks heaps Ben, I thought you might have liked this one mate. I know you're a big fan of jetties. I enjoy photographing them as well, they make such great subjects for landscape images.
Thank You for sharing
Hey Andrew. I’ve always admired the way you treat your aqua colours in post. Nicely done mate

Ewan
Looks like a nice peaceful place !!!! Great images 👍
Cheer Paul, I always feel calm and relaxed after a few days down in Albany! 👍
Very nice vlog. As always: calm in talking and acting. Pretty to follow. Great.
Haha, the last thing I want is to be stressed out by my passion. Thanks for the kind words! 😊
those are some great pictures!
and what great insight
thanks for sharing this with us
really enjoyed watching this
gorgeous stuff!
Thanks for that mate, appreciate your ongoing support for the channel and feedback on the content I share, cheers! 👍
Great video, Andrew, with some stunning images. Especially liked the first two of the jetty. Amazing light and beautiful colours. Thank you.
Thanks Tony, It was an incredible morning with stunning light. I great morning to be up early! 👍
Short and sweet. Nice images!
Yep, didn't want to drag this one on too long, cheers Phil! 👍
As always, a quietly thoughtful commentary, beautiful drone footage and some stunning images. Well done!
Thanks Rob, happy to hear you enjoyed this video mate! 👍
Great stuff as always man! Thanks for bringing us along! Cheers!
Pleasure man, glad to hear you enjoyed this one mate! 👍
What a right nice morning you had like the underwater lead in as well
Thanks Paul, I wasn't too sure how that rocks leading in from the left underwater were going to come out, nice pick up! 👍
Great images and vlog as usual. Thanks.
Thanks very much for that! 👍
Hi Andrew, great to see you back vlogging again - always a big inspiration of mine. I thought the images were cracking in this video, really nice almost tropical tones - loved them. hell of a sunrise that was as well! All the best mate, cheers. Henry.
Cheers Henry, hope you are well mate. I see your back in the UK, hope the move was smooth for you. I got lucky with the light, however the light can be good down there this time of the year. The sunrise made the early start all worth it! 👍
Excellent job and great image. I liked the longer exposure, the smooth water is a nice contrast to the texture in the rocks.
Thanks Pete, I think that's what I liked about the long exposure shots, the contrast in textures add some nice interest, cheers! 👍
Some cracking images there Andrew! The look on your face when the joggers ran on to the jetty. 😳😩
Thanks Len, haha, I was trying to keep my cool, the colour was fading and I needed to get the shot. The unknown pressures of landscape photography. 👍
Stunning shots as always Andrew. Your style is so easy to understand for a fairly new photographer like myself. Thanks as always buddy.
Thanks mate, glad you're enjoying the videos, appreciate the feedback! 👍
Lovey images
Thanks very much Javier! 👍
I live in Albany and it’s seriously photography Mecca here - as local landscape photographer I’m blessed here - great job
My soft grad gets lots of use here ...lol the jetty runners 🏃♀️ ha ha do my head in - that jetty is my fav long exposure spot
Great work Andrew
That is awesome, thanks for sharing Nev. I agree, you live in one of the best places for photography. I try and make it down to Albany as many times as I can through out the year. However, with the dramas and challenges of this years, it's been more than 12 months since my last visit. I'll need to work on that! 😊
Stunning shots Andrew. Saw Albany from a fresh perspective.
Thanks Behram, Albany is a beautiful part of the world. Hope to get back there again before the end of the year! 👍
Lovely vlog Andrew. Love the color of that water mate. You managed to capture some really nice shots there. 👍
Thanks for that Ian, every time I see the water down there I'm impressed with how blue and clean it looks, cheers mate! 👍
Great video, thanks!
Thanks very much Jason! 👍
LOL! Those runners. Looked like a few others were heading there too. Great way to spend the early morning. Really liked the long exposures with that green/emerald water. You're heading toward Summer while Fall is arriving here in Upstate NY - best time of the year for color, or as I call it, the second Spring. Cheers.
Haha, I know the runners were worse than the flies! The shots with the emerald water were favourites of mine as well. I look forward to the next few months of spring but summer can be tough for photography here in Perth. It's a real challenge to create content for CZcams. So I'll try and make the most of it while the weather is good.! 👍
Awesome pictures Andrew!!...Well done!!
Thanks JR, glad you liked the shots mate! 👍
Brilliant again, really enjoy your video's and info that you share, Stayed there 3 nights a couple of years ago, its a beautiful place, must go back.
Thanks Ross, each time I return Albany I'm reminded how lucky we are to have a location like this so close to home, cheers! 👍
Superb Video Andrew, and yet again superlative images.
Thanks David, so glad you enjoyed this one! 👍
Great video! Absolutely love the shots you made.
Thanks very much for that! 👍
This is the most impressive fitness & running video I've seen in a while. The inspirational music & visuals almost made me feel like I was exercising and & enjoying the sea breeze. The sheer number of early morning runners in one photography location was staggering ;)
Haha, yes when editing the footage I did feel I was in the middle of a fitness video. It's a very popular spot for runners and dog walkers. While filming though, I was so focused I didn't notice most of them.
Sorry to be offtopic but does anyone know a method to log back into an instagram account?
I was dumb forgot the password. I love any tricks you can give me.
@Colin Aden Instablaster :)
Great video! I have learned lots from you. Thank you
Thanks Helen, very happy to hear you find the content helpful! 👍
Great coming home from work and see this in my notifications. Next best thing to not being out seeing your images Andrew. Got out last weekend and put a few images on Twitter as had a great sunrise and was experimenting with some of the techniques you've shared previously. Loved the palette of colours especially the colour of that sea
Haha, I could say the surprise Monday upload was planned but the truth is I just didn't;t have time to finish it Sunday. Hope you enjoyed a little down time after work. Check out your shots in Twitter, loved the reck in the golden light with the silhouette of the mountains in the background! 👍
Great pictures Andrew !
Thanks very much! 👍
Awesome video mate! I have to say, while I was watching the beginning and you walking along the beach and were showing us the brilliant colours in the sky I was yelling at you. "Stop talking and get your camera out to capture the colours before they fade away" LOL The photos you captured were beautiful as always mate. :)
Cheers Shane, haha, I may have looked calm but there was a slight panic inside. Truth is if I don't do an intro "Andrew the editor" gets anoyed at "Andrew the cameraman" and we all end up with no video and no one is happy!
Great video Andrew, lovely conditions and a beautiful location. You got some beautiful images, even if you did have to wait for the runners to get out of the way :-)
Thanks Ralph, I was aware that the location was popular however I did realise the runners were going to worse than the flies. Luckily there were opportunities when the jetty was free of distractions and I could capture my shot! 👍
Great video Andrew! Amazing colours you managed to capture, especially in the sky. The sea looked so clear Great drone footage during the video too.
Hope you enjoyed the rest of your weekend mate :)
Cheers Andy, have you changed your avatar? The morning light show was impressive and I'm also blown away with the water as well, stunning! 👍 Hope you enjoyed your weekend too mate.
@@Andrew_marr Yes mate I changed my avatar. I fancied a change :) The early morning light you showed at the beginning of your video was gorgeous! Stunning reds. Again well done! :)
Yes I had a good weekend thank you. I tried to get out early Sunday morning to take some seascapes off the Kent coast where I live but unfortunately I had to work :(
Thinking of changing my own avatar...haven't changed it in over 6 years...bit nervous! You'll be getting pretty excited about Autumn over there. Hope you have more luck this weekend! :)
@@Andrew_marr Yes definitely change it! We get some beautiful Autumn colours over here in the UK. Will be starting to take pictures soon :)
Great images, Andrew. Who'd have thought that a jetty would be so popular with the joggers! ;)
Thanks very much Simon. I was surprised to see so many, particularly when it did take them anywhere. They ran down it and then had to run all the way back!
Well done Andrew , might of been quick but you came away with some very nice images, done with dedication and passion as always , cheers
Thanks Rick, as I said it felt like it was over before it started. The light while it lasted was stunning though, so I'm glad I was able to capture it in a few shots! 👍
Beautiful last image in particular. I preferred the right side images because of the better separation between the dock/pier and the object further out in the water.
Thank you Jack, it's a good point you make, I really only noticed that when editing the images.
Stunning as usual Andrew, I would gladly put any of those shots on my walls. Cheers mate🍺🍺👍
Thanks Michael, appreciate your feedback mate, that's very kind! 👍
If that represented some of your informal/casual work, Andrew, I know that I would really be amazed to see some of your serious work. Wow, from Texas. Thanks for the tour and the instructions.
Thanks very much for watching and sharing your comment. I have a few playlists of videos you may like to check out!
Another great video Andrew. Wow, that sky was amazing, and the images were amazing as well great stuff. Isn't it a pain when people interupt your photography LOL!!!
Thanks Tim, the runners were worse than the flies on that morning. It was a very popular spot for both runners and dog walkers. Luckily I was able to get a few shots off with out too many crashing the shots! 👍
Gorgeous images of what looks a beautiful location, the long exposures were especially beautiful. I tend to use reverse grads more and more with seascapes as the brightest area is usually on the horizon. Ever since I've been watching your videos it has been obvious you are a brilliant photographer, far better than I could hope to be, but your video production is now phenomenal too.
As a total aside, we are just moving into Autumn, our last test finished today. It was a great way to say goodbye to Cook and for Jimmy to get his seam balling record. I don’t know if you get any of our test matches, but it’s well worth a watch. It was a match that everything good about sport won.
As always a brilliant and informative video, hope you had a great break.
Thanks Mark, I've been experimenting a little with reverse grads as well. You see them feature in a few of my up coming videos. I cn see I'll start using them more and more. Your feedback is very kind, about my photography. I have a long way to go, but I think that's what I enjoy about this art form, the continuous opportunity to improve.
I managed to catch some of the highlights of the England/India series. I was so pleased that Cook's final test planned out the way it did. It reminded me of Steve Waugh's century at the SCG. Cook is a true cricketing gentleman and one of my favourite English players. I also have a lot of respect for James Anderson, and it was nice to see him grab McGrath's record with the last wicket of the series.
All the best!
Not as damp as Tasmania, Andrew. Loved the sky colours in the b-roll, the first and last captures and, although I’m not keen on too smooth water, frame 3 with the light on the floats was great. Thanks.
Nope, I little drier here, mind you we have had our share of rain this winter so everything is looking green...Australian green, not UK green :) Thanks Brian! 👍
Thanks for the video, Andrew. Interesting as always. It's amazing how when you're trying to set up a shot, someone almost always walks or runs into the view - preferably wearing red! (Your reaction was more moderate than mine.)
I'll be down in Albany in a couple of weeks. I hopefully, the sky will have something for me too.
Thanks Shane, haha I could say that my reaction was tempered be the calm, peaceful astmosphere of the morning but it was probably the fact that I had teh camera on me and I wanted footage I could include in the video :) Truth is I was concerntrating on my thing, they were concertrating on their thing...but it is amazing how often it happens!
Wonderful color/textures - and commentary. For some reason I preferred the short exposure over the longer ones (and I tend to like longer ones in general). Thanks for sharing your expertise!
Appreciate that Alan, I thunk I preferred the shorter exposure as well, hence it made it as the thumbnail. I liked the textures and details in the clouds. Thanks for your comment mate! 👍
Another inspiring video, thank you so much. I am particularly impressed with your drone videos, we have so many restrictions here in California I can hardly find a beach where I can fly mine, I guess I need to visit Australia!
Thanks for that Susannah, Glad you enjoyed the drone footage. I love flying it around. My general rule is find a location where no one else is around. I imagine that's easier in Australia that parts of the US. I great excuse to come visit! 👍
We are restricted from flying in State and National parks, all the best beaches and places.
5:25 beautiful contrast between warm and cold tones
Thanks Maxine,, I actually noticed the contrast as I was editing it. Not so obvious when I was there, perhaps that had something to do with the longer exposure, cheers! 👍
Mate you spelt “Guide Falls, Tasmania: another day with awesome Andrew Dawes” wrong in your title..... great little getaway spot and rewarded with a burning sky! Maybe a tad late that morning, but you came up with the good anyway. Great job and that drone footage has me tingling!
But at least I tagged with that! I think the light was actually a little early if you ask me. The sky was going off, which is always exciting but that comes with a little pressure as you know!
Next time set the alarm 30 minutes earlier lol Love the longer exposures (unsurprisingly). So much to shoot in Albany, hope you got to see Point King lighthouse which is just around the point from MIddleton. :)
One of the things that keeps me coming back to Albany are all the possibilities and potential landsdcapes Albany has to offer, plus you can get some great light there! 👍
Thanks Andrew!
My pleasure Robert, cheer mate! 👍
Awesome video as always and amazing photos. Just a bit bummed it ended so quickly. Almost 9 minutes done and dusted just like that and now will have to wait another week or 2 for your next upload haha. Anyways cheers from South Africa.
Haha, cheers Warren! I'm never very sure how long I should make the videos. Thought I'd end this one a little quicker. I'll work hard on the next one to make sure you only have to wait a week! :)
@@Andrew_marr I think for me it's just that I only caught onto your channel about a month or 2 months ago and binged all your videos and now waiting for a new video is like waiting for the new game of thrones season to arrive. Just feels like forever Haha.
Also after watching your Iceland videos I decided to book myself a trip there in October/November. So about 6 weeks to wait. Super excited to see some of the same spots from your videos 😊
But thanks for your response. Looking forward to the next video 😎👍🏻
Wow, Iceland in October/November will be amazing. Tag me into an images you share on Instagram so I can check them out mate! 👍🏻
Beautiful colours Andrew! How convenient is the Big Four holiday park? Great to see you share some local content again.
Cheers James, I know it's one of my favourite parks and so close to the beach...the lazy photographer's accomodation. I still have some Tassie video coming but making the most of the weather this year.
Great video and some awesome shots. Can i ask what rucksack you were using for your camera gear? thanks
Thanks Christian, pleased you liked these images. The backpack is an F-stop Tilopa, I don't think that make this exact one, it may have been superceded by a new model. Here's a link - geni.us/jRpTEW
thanks
Stunning images and videos. Could you please take a night pic and video to see how quality is look like? cheers
Andrew, your shots in the last few months have been absolutely stunning. From the sand dunes to this this pier shot (at 5:30). Really incredible stuff. I see you use hard and soft grads. I’ve always been leery of them unless I have a completely flat horizon line. If anything rises above the horizon it becomes darkened by the filter and I find it more difficult to correct in post. I have been shooting without grads and applying the grad in Lightroom. Any thoughts to what works best?
Thanks for the feedback Steve, that's very kind of you to say. I love using filter, but that's just the approach I perfer. There are lots a photoghers that sucessfully capture stunning images and don't filters. I like the process of using filters in the field, seeing what I'm going to capture on the LCD screen and getting that as close as I can to the final image in camera. That doesn't mean I don't edit my images, I do! But getting it closer means there less post processing needed. regarding anything sticking above the grad horizon, I know what you mean, sometimes I take an extra shot at a longer exposure to paint in some detail or rely on the camera's dynamic range for the detail. other time I won't worry and will just leav it black or dark. Take first image I shared, the hill on the right of the image is dark but that's to be expected as the sun is rising directly behind it. I managed to draw out some of the detail in the rocks at the base of the hill which I was happen with. I tend not to worry to much about some blacks in my image, for subjects in the distance, they're not as bad as blown highlights. Hope that explanation helps mate! 👍
Hi Andrew. You've taken us to another stunning location today ! You've captured some stunning images but I take your point about the earlier light - to die for !! Many thanks for sharing. P.S. Are you seeing a benefit from upgrading to the D850?
Thanks Tim, it was shame I felt a little rush but it was a sensational morning so I can't complain There are some benefits that I hopt to share in a future video. Some new features have actually surprised me! 👍
Great vlog as always, Albany is a stunning area! Will there be any more vlogs from Tassie?
Thanks Ryan, Albany is beautiful particularly this time of the year. Yes, definitely more Tassie videos on their way. I'm thinking of stretching out their release into summer when it a little hard to create content here in Perth. Having said that, the next tassie vlog will hopfully be ready for this weekend! 👍
Nice 😁 Have you compared these with the similar d810 xt2 work previously? Much difference?
Thanks fo that, actually i haven't I should do some like that as a video! 👍
Thanks mate always greatly enjoy your vids. I have never seen an explanation of how to choose between .3, .6 or .9 grad - what's the method?
Thanks Colin, I'll make sure I talk about selecting a filter in a future video. Basically though it's a little trial and error and some experience. I've been doing this so long that I can look at the scene and pretty much pick which filter I need, I then check the image on the back of the LCD and work out if the exposure is balanced.
Did you focus stack or something blend these shots are so sharp
Hi what drone do you use as the link in the description doesn't work
Marrsy, at the risk of 'banging on', can you tell us where you focussed on each of your shots?
in Australia the winter is fading out nowadays ? you seem your winter is much earlier than world
The problem with our winter here is that it does last for very long. If it was up to me I'd have winter all year round. I might be in the minority there!
@@Andrew_marr same as me I love winter I am winter man I like to have it all year
Where do you live?
For some reason I’m getting error message and can’t play the video.
That's concerning, I actually had an issue uploading this video and had to have a few attempts. I've it a few times since and had no issues, hopefully it a temorary thing and you can play it know with no problems. Thanks for letting me know Dhavial!
So I was searching for a camera to capture the sunrise the way the human eye sees it. I noticed through all the videos I have watched there's still something lost in the taking of the picture no matter how good the camer's. I guess nothing can compare to the God Given human eye. I enjoyed your video, I will use your suggestions. Thank you
insecure people always have to post lists of 'gear'.....
An Coats you don't get it at all, do you?
