- Landscape photography is all about working with the conditions. With the wind and rain hanging around for the morning, we decided to explore some waterfalls to see if we could find a location that was protected and gave us a chance of getting a landscape image.

After just a 10 minute drive, we arrived at Guide Falls. The Falls are very accessible. Near the carpark, there are picnic tables, BBQ’s and facilities, perfect for family and gatherings. We could hear the falls from the carpark, it’s well signed and just a short walk along a well-maintained path.
The weather was constantly changing, rain, followed by periods of sunlight, following by more rail. While I waited for my turn and a break in the weather, I started setting up my camera and dialling in my preferred setting, starting with a screw on polarisier (no other filters), an aperture of f8-10. I was aiming for a shutter speed around 1/3 second, to give me a silky smooth waterfall, but still with some detail in the water. The capture that detail also needed to protect my highlights otherwise the water was going to be blown out.

Thanks for that mate, Tassie is certainly a place of unique beauty. It should definitely be on everyone's bucket list!
Great vlog and stunning shots Andrew.

Great, like it!
Thanks very much Hu! 👍
Top Notch!
Thanks so much!
One word, "WOW"... Brilliant vlog Andrew. You are simply the best landscape photographer... (y)
I don't know about that, but thanks for the encouragement!
Lovely second image Andrew, and the square crop works beautifully mate.
Thanks for that Greg, I think the square cropped helped simply the scene a little, cheers mate! 👍
May of been a challenge but I love the images with the fallen tree and rock nice
Thank you Paul, it would have been nice to have some softer light, but it was out of our control, so we just had to go with it, cheers mate!
Great vlog Andrew loving the drone sequences👏👏👏👏
Hey thanks Paul, appreciate your feedback and support mate! 👍
Hi Andrew, great to see you in the Burnie area, we lived in Penguin for 40 odd years before moving south. As you will have researched there are a number of waterfalls around the Ridgley area. Thanks for sharing.
All the best.........Peter.
Cheers Peter, we found this area beautiful, with so many waterfalls to choose from. We hit up a few more before heading south, cheers mate! 👍
Awesome video Andrew. A couple of awesome some shot under some challenging conditions. You can't beat a good waterfall image!!
Thanks for that Tim, the conditions were challenging, the harsh sunlight probably the most difficult. I enjoy photographing waterfalls, there seems to be plenty of time to relax and consider my shot, cheers mate! 👍
Cheers Andrew, you have given us our money’s worth from Taz,what a beautiful state just full of amazing scenes.
Well done, always look forward to your vlogs.
Thanks David, there's still more Tassie vlogs to comes, but I'm thinking of spacing them out with some other local landscapes as well. Glad you're enjoyig them mate! 👍
Beautiful images. The location looks stunning and the water flow is awesome.I might have to stick this on bucket list. Cheers mate.
Thanks for that John. Given the ease of access and number of compositions the location provided, I'd definitely stick Guide Falls on the list! 👍
You make awesome videos Andrew. Keep them coming!
Thanks so much for the support, the next video is on it's way! 👍
Another great video Andrew! What an amazing location and waterfall. It looked pretty difficult to get the right shots, but you did brilliantly as always. Beautiful pictures capturing a beautiful waterfall. Well done mate! :)
what a beautiful landscape photography video
the conditions look crazy!
really enjoyed watching all of this :D
thanks for sharing this with us
Thanks mate, glad you know you're enjoying the series. There's more to come and the conditions get even crazier!
Some gorgeous shots Andrew I'm impressed you got any with the amount of rain and spray that seemed to be falling on you
Thanks Peter, we were all tested with the rain and spray but the worst was yet the come...stay tuned! 👍
Stunning episode, mate. (Practising the venacular!) Loved the images, the drone footage and the b-roll. A bit of sunshine makes a huge difference.
Thanks Brian, (perfect vernacular :) ) It was the first shine we'd seen in days and unfortunately the last for a few more days :(
Really nice video Andrew .. enjoyed it a lot.
Thanks very much for that, glad you enjoyed it! :)
The 1st image for me liking the dark edges.
Thanks for that Paul. I edited the image so the edges did fall away to darkness which added a littIe mood the scene. Glad you enjoyed that image! 👍
Great vlog as always Andrew. Looks a very nice place to explore and your images are always impressive. Atb
Thanks Ray, it was an interesting location, I think we would have been happy if we had softer or moodier light, cheers mate! 👍
Loved that mate. First image was fantastic 👏🏻
Cheers Gareth, hope you are keeping well mate! 👍
i am!! your vids are continuing to boom mate! some stunning intro footage and i must say the blend between the b-roll to you talking was fantastic.. :-)
You can help but feel pumped up when you see the opening sequence and music score. Certainly looked like the weather sealing on the D850 was being well tested Andrew. Interesting to hear your thoughts on striking that balance between ISO and Aperture when you have the shutter speed in mind. Worked out well in the end for you as the images turned out great
Cheers Jim, so happy you enjoy the opening sequence, it's a nice summary of our visit to Tasmania. The D850 certainly had it's weather sealing tested at Guide Falls and there are weter days to come, cheers mate! 👍
Epic effort to make videos in these conditions. With the sun behind you so much while filming it’s easier to see how difficult the conditions are with constant rain, drizzle, or waterfall mist. Great images of the falls which I feel don’t get much attention which is a shame. Most likely due to it sometimes being a small trickle rather than the torrent we were lucky to have. Great video mate and some excellent thorough tips on camera equipment and settings to overcome challenges in the field
Cheers Andrew, I definitely feel we were lucky with the amount of water we had. The rain goes with the territory...if you're not photographing in the rain, you're doing it wrong! No doubt those conditions were tricky and the periods of harsh sunlight didn;t make it any easier. Thanks very much mate, hope you and Haylie are having a blast! 👍
Great landscapes! Glad GeologyAndrew, and the BadHairGuy can cook. You seem to be good with kettles.
Thank you Ian, it was a treat to have the Geologist on hand to explain what we were looking at. The formation of the mountains, rocks and valleys in an interest of mine so I had plenty of questions. As for Richard, there's no helping him...I do make a good cuppa! 👍
great location Andy , great photos still not found the viice activation focus app on mine ,
Thanks again Tom, have you had a chance to shoot down in Tassie?
Top presentation and beautiful photographs(as always). I especially appreciated your set up description at the main falls; use of portrait mode, varying aperture from 14 to 16 to attain correct shutter speed etc. Stay dry and I enjoy The Two Andrews now The Two Ronnies are no longer.
Mike in Oz
Haha, I loved The Two Ronnies, so I'll take that! 👍 Can't say we stayed dry unfortunately, but we survived. Glad you enjoyed these images mate.
Awesome images, you guys are having a ball shame about being so wet and living in such a small space. And where is the shower caps....🌧😊👍🏻
Thanks James, haha if it wasn't so wet and crowded, the photography would simply be too easy. 😊 I'd lost the shower cap as this stage, but look out the the dog bag in a later episode! 👍
Nice job at that second location - I'm digging the square crop (the last image you put up) - works quite nicely I reckon. Nice job not falling in the river... you know I was tempted to give you a push - you probably wouldn't have liked it at the time but it would have made for good footage.
Cheers Richard, I actually struggled with the editing of that last image, harsh light, a lot of mess, eventually I when with "let just cut everything out!" Push me in with all my camera gear...would have been totally worth it!
Wow, incredible images, Andrew, and especially liked the second one near the beginning of the video. One of my very favourites from all your vlogs. Thank you. One question please, is there ever an occasion when a polariser would not be used when photographing a waterfall?
Thanks for that Tony, this was a great waterfall to shoot, I liked it's shape...the curtain look! I'd always use a polariser when shooting a waterfall. The only exception would be if I forgot to bring it...that's happen before! :)
Nice images, I thought the vertical/portrait views had better leading lines. With the Lee filter pictures I thought they evoked a calming feeling. Great video!
Thanks Vaun, appreciate your sharing your thoughts here. I agree the portrait utilised the leading line more. 👍
@@Andrew_marr you're very welcome! Keep up the good work.
Hey Andrew, stellar shots mate, and love the video. First time viewer to your channel, and came per recommendation of Ben Fewtrell. Been following him for quite a while and he has helped me out a great deal. Look forward to viewing more of your vlogs. Keep up the great work!
Hi Rob, thank you and welcome to the channel mate! Love the work Ben does over at On 3 Legs. I appreciate you leaving a comment, cheers!
Stunning! Where did you focus for the first two waterfall images - 1/3 of the way in? Leslie
Thanks Leslie, as a general rule, focus around a third of the way into the image but it isn't a rule I stick to rigorously. For this shot I focused on the group of rocks at the end of the leading line of rocks in the foreground, hope that helps! :)
Beautifully done as usual. I seek out and look forward to your videos. May I ask how you metered this? Did you meter off the water or something else.? Also ,did you use Matrix metering with the D850? Thanks.
Thanks very much for the kind feedback and support for the channel. I use the histogram on the back of the camera, which meters the entire scene. From the histogram I can monitor the darks areas as well as the midtones and highlights. I make sure I exposure for the highlights so they aren't blown out, so in this case that was the waterfall, hope that helps.
Rain, mist, uneven light - what a challenging spot. Great images Andrew. How did you go about getting the focus and taking the shot without getting mist/droplets on the lens?
Thanks Miguel, they weren't ideal conditions and the location did have it challenges, but we worked with what we had and had some fun! For focusing I held a cloth above the lens to stop the rain used autofocus, took the shot and check the image...repeated multiple times I knew I had at least one in the bag I could use.
Very nice vlog Andrew, what brand of 24-70 mm lens are you using on the D850?
Thanks Richard, I use the Nikon version of the 24-70mm - geni.us/tdaSXB
They just keep getting better, i was wondering what type of drone your using as my son is keen to purchase one?
Thanks for that Ross, I use a DJI Mavic Pro, it's still available even though they've also released the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom. However, these can get expensive. The other Andrew was using a Mavic Air, which gave some excellent results and it much smaller and convenient the carry around. Let me know if you have any more questions!
Andrew Thanks, have passed ionfo onto my Son.
How did you find living in the camper
Hi Phillip, I really enjoyed it. There were some challenges, space, and trying to get things dry however, we all worked together to make it eaasier on each other. It's all about respect for your fellow camper and good 'van Etiquette'! 👍
👍✳️👍✳️👍✳️
Thanks 👍
Another epic video. I would rather see the final images against a black background as opposed to a white one.
At least mid to dark grey. I totally agree
Fair call, I should perhaps look at bordering the images differently depending on the image style rather than use a standard border for all images I share! 👍
I really enjoy your channel and I have learned a lot from you. Lately, though, there seems to be too much drone footage. In trying to skip past the drone stuff, I end up missing a lot of what you have to say. Could you please ease up with the arial stuff? You are a talented photographer whose images are beautiful. You don’t need it!
Ooh no,please don’t, the drone footage let’s us travel to new lands and as a newbie drone pilot I find your footage inspiring.
Hi Susan, thank you for sharing your thoughts, I'm so pleased to know the videos have been helpful. I try and be careful with the amount of drone footage I use in each videos as I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. Keep in mind that as much as the videos are about informing viewers of my approach to capturing an image and educating photographers, they serve also as an escape for people and hopefullly inspiring viewers to get out and explore locations. I also see value in the unique perspective the drone provides as it shares a different view of the locations I visit, other than the first person footage I capture with the vlogging camera. Many who watch the channel have never visited Australian, the aerial footage allows viewers to understand a little more of the context of the location. The challenge I have is I want you to feel as if you are there with me and the drone footage provides another way for you enjoy the surrounding views of the location.
Interesting I also receive feedback that I shouldn't talk to the camera as much, some people don't want to see my face. So the b-roll and drone footage is an attempt to break the "talking head" up a little. Thank you again for your honest feedback Susan, I will continue to be mindful of the amount of drone footage I use in the future.
Thanks for your support Susannah, glad you enjoy being transported to new locations! :)
Hi Andrew. Love the drone footage - you're nailing the B roll in this series. That's a beautiful first image with the lead in of the rocks. Do you feel the pro glass stopper delivers sufficient colour cast improvement to justify the extra cost? I'd value your opinion as I need to replace a very broken Little Stopper. Thanks for taking us to another beautiful location Andrew. Really enjoyed the video - thanks for sharing.
Cheers Tim, thanks so much for the feedback mate! 👍 The first location could have resulted in an advantage image but the leading lines of the rocks helped with the shot. The Pro glass is definitely an improvement, lower colour shift and better quality. If you use filters on many of your images, I'd say yes they are worth the cost.
Nice video. What do u think of the new Fuji. XT-3??
Thanks Kunal, it looks like an exciting camera, I'm thinking of creating a video about my thoughts on the X-T3!
Hey thats awesome. I just moved from Nikon to Fuji after 10 years and very excited to receive my new XT-3. Looking forward to your video
I am a painter and use multiple photos for ideas for my paintings . The “ silky “ water that is so desirable nowadays looks absolutely crap. Are you people blind ? Water doesn’t look like cotton. I can’t walk anymore so I use other people’s photos bits and pieces here and there . But the silky shit is useless . Who gave you this idea? That water is cotton? And you take away the wet look on rocks. They do look like that with water on them (wet). When I paint I highlight rocks to make them look wet . I don’t use your photos for my paintings.
Spends to much time explaining and no photo results of what he shot.
