The WHY of Landscape Photography AND an EPIC SUNRISE (or 2)

- I travel to the Lake District again in this Episode for some epic sunrise photography. But this episode is more about my journey and why landscape photography is so important for me. I talk about the struggles I had at school and how photography was a constant positive factor in my life. Oh - and I also shoot some epic drone footage on the coldest morning of the Autumn.

“It doesn’t get any better than this” - this is definitely your catchphrase Nigel!
Really enjoyed this video, stunning images & amazing dronework
Ha ha! Yep - I suppose it is... but in this week's video it really was true!! Thanks for the comment Ciara
“It doesn’t get any better than this” made it on this years Calendar :p
Nigel, your pictures are just sublime.
More importantly, your video is more photography and less exposition. Perfect. Please don't change the format. Cheers!
+TokenAsianGuy thanks so much - I wanted to get the balance right and believe I have started to now. Inspiring videos are what I aim to create
There are a lot of amazing landscape photographers out there. And a lot of amazing landscapes. But what inspires me about your photos the most are the colors you choose and the way they are portrayed. The oranges, browns and greens are sublime. I have reworked some of my most mundane looking woodland photos with those colors in mind. It’s made a world of a difference. Thank you Nigel
I dont think i have commented on any of your videos before, but your story compels me to tell you this...
Just before i was to begin secondary school, i went into hospital for a major operation, and it meant i was to be away from school for 18 months, however i was to be taught by a lovely lady privately in the towns museum, so away from school i kept up with my studies and actually flourished while under her tutoring, but upon returning to mainstream school once i was given the all clear 18 months later, i was placed in the year below me as the school thought i was under educated, and i remained in that year until the school year changed in september when i was placed back in the proper year group for my age, but by then the damage had been done, my education suffered greatly and not one of the teachers, to put it bluntly, gave a fuck about teaching me.
By the time i was 15 i was seeking other ways to amuse myself and photography had always been with me, so that was the route i took, and i eventually ended up taking my praktica mtl-5b to school with me, one teacher took me to the head masters office to tell me off for bringing a camera in to school, however the head was an avid photographer too, and eventually we decided to do a photography weekend at school, where 10 or 12 of us learned all the basics about how to load film properly into developing tanks, how to process the film, and also print in the darkroom using a spare cupboard in the schools staff area.
Being in that darkroom was like therapy to me, i despised the teachers who neglected me less and concentrated on photography. I left school with no qualifications but later gained them at college, and photography has been with me ever since, i was even working with the local newspapers photographer during my work experience fortnight, which only fuelled my passion for photography. I still see that photographer in town and we always stop to talk about the magic of photography and how it has changed since we were doing 35mm film.
During the 1990s i done 100s of weddings, and eventually shot a little bit of fashion and glamour along the way, as well as photographing various raves from the 90s for related publications, but now photography is purely a pleasure thing for me, i no longer get paid to do it, and i no longer wish to be, but photography is still a massive part of my life, it is something that has never gone away really, and it continues to captivate me, no matter what i am pointing my camera at!
Your images in this video are some of the best landscape images i have seen on youtube for some time, i feel a few youtube landscape photographers are just doing photography by numbers sometimes, treading the same paths and shooting the same images using the same lightroom presets as everyone else, with almost copycat videos as well, which after a time does get a bit monotonous, but your images really stand out, they are dreamlike and surreal, utterly beautiful!!!
+Alexandra Starr Photography wow! That is the longest comment I have had! And really great! Thanks so much and thanks for sharing your story!!! 👊
I can't add anything to what has already been said, the images and drone footage are amazing Nigel. Clearly you get the rewards if you put in the effort. I always enjoy your vlogs but this one I think is your best ever. Well done
+Peter Biggin thanks Peter! Yeah - really pleased with it - it was a long time in the planning and editing but worth it! 👍
i am blown away, i to have trouble reading and writing, i have never read a book ever, i just cant take it in. i love photos and photography and cant wait ot the next time i get time out with the camera... i wish i could do more real photography like you guys do, getting out and up sooner and seeing more sunrise and sunset in the hill.
+Paul Compton thanks Paul - I think a lot of people who are dyslexic find photography therapeutic 👍
Nigel, you are a true champion of photography. Good on ya mate!
+Stuart Groves ha - that is kind 👍
Thanks Nigel. Your images give me the inspiration to get back out there and keep enjoying and learning.
+Doug Hollaway cheers Doug! Really appreciate the comments - they make it all worthwhile!
Amazing! I love your videos. I don't consider myself a landscape photographer, but I do love to get out early in the morning and admire the landscapes of almost anywhere I visit. I live in Texas USA. There's always something to look at and say "Wow".
You're videos inspire me to get out really early, see and shoot. I even bought an EPSON printer to print my best images. That's how much you've inspired me. Thank you soooooo much!
Nigel, first of your video's I have watched, I think I have some catching up to do. Your images are simply stunning and inspirational. Thanks for making and sharing them.
+Martin Norden thanks Martin - glad to have you on board! Appreciate it a lot! 👊
Wow! What a video... Absolutely amazing! I loved each and every image and the drone footage was just out of this world. I loved the mood of your photographs, they captured the atmosphere perfectly. The lilac sky one was my favourite, honestly nature can paint in hues that no artist could duplicate on a canvas. Your amazement and excitement in the video was infectious, you prove beyond doubt how photography can add another dimension to your life. Great video, Nigel, you nailed it!
+sherry Davis wow! That is a great comment and made my day!!! That ms so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
The best landscape video so far for me! Beautiful picture. Great video. Like your horizontal morning shot. It looks like in the dreamland.

Awesome vlog again Nigel...the drone footage through the mist was awesome. It has made me look forward to my trip in to the Lakes over New Year even more!!
+Wayne Read yeah! It was special that mist! Always makes for good drone footage!
Excellent Nigel, I love the way you find new inspirations and varied content. It shows such an overall skill in a subject you clearly have a passion for. I definatly agree it's all about the personal experience and the creation of those memories. Great video thank you😀
Nigel thank you for your sincere honesty. You never cease to inspire! I look forward to every video, you have an incredible talent. 👍🏻👌🏻
The way you give a video a story is never seen. I hope you know you are inspiring people with all of this amazing footage.
Nigel Danson 👏

Crazy feeling after watching this🙃
What a terrific video Nigel. Thanks for the honesty. It makes your journey so much more alive for me. Bless you brother and have a GREAT SUNDAY
Cheers Kevin - much appreciated!
Inspirational. Thank you. Love that you have a full set of Wainwrights on your shelf.
Stunning drone footage when you flew it through the fog, actually said WOW out loud. Thank you so much for posting.
+Steve thanks Steve! I said that when I was taking it and something like ‘please record. Please have correct settings. Please don’t crash’
Wow. Wonderful!! Thx for sharing your story too. You may have that issue but you have the eyes to see in such a great way!,
Jim
+phooesnax thanks Jim!!!
Fantastic video. The footage from the drone whilst breaking through the mist is spectacular! Nice one Nigel 👍
Thank you for the personal story. And the passion, enthusiasm, and inspiration. I have been watching your vlog for at least a few months now and they are wonderful, and getting better all the time. Finally, the images and drone footage are beautiful. May you continue to enjoy and take joy in your art, and the process of creating it, along the way.
+Lee Wolfe what a fantastic comment. Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
Beautiful - you and your assistant are creating amazing and inspiring vids. Thanks!
Nigel, what amazing images you've made here! Also, thanks for sharing your story. It's incredibly inspiring. I definitely agree that photography is a therapeutic process. There's something about finding a scene, composing, making the image and seeing it through to the print that's very restorative.
+Adrian R cheers Adrian - glad to know it is inspiring! Makes my day! 👍
Absolutely perfect. Thank you for sharing your experience.
+Dhaval Pawar no problem at all - thanks you for watching 👍
Awesome Nigel super inspiring, always thankful for the amount of detail and time you put into your videos 👌
Nigel, the images you captured over the course of this video are simply beautiful! Both mornings looked to be pretty special, but I have to say that the frosty morning looked like absolute bliss to me. Nice job yet again.
+David Dixon cheers David! Appreciate it 👊
Thankyou for sharing Nigel, your best vlog to date. That drone filming and images were spectacular with amazing scenery gorgeous ...
+Allan Davies cheers Allan - really appreciate that! 👍
Such beautiful images!!! I really love autumn out of all the seasons. It gives magical moments like these and nothing beats that. Enjoy it while it lasts coz winter is just around the corner. 😀
+Marieta Tsoukoukou yep - it is stunning and the transition from Autumn to winter is so good!
Your enthusiasm is infectious! Really enjoyed watching this vlog and I especially liked the subdued tones in the print at 14:15. Nice work.
+AM M'Mullan thanks - yep that is my fav print as well!
“It doesn’t get any better than this”, you got that right ND. Awesome photos & video. You have the mastery of Drone usage & footage. You offer the same level of Drone work as you do your photos-truly beautiful. I watched the vid twice back to back as it needed that just to take in the beauty. Congratulations & thank you.
That is really kind! Thanks... I love the drone - it offers so much to videography. And 2 views! Wow!
your videos just keep getting better mate! love all the images!
Thanks a lot!
Absolutely love your passion. It is very inspiring. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work and tips with the masses.
Thanks for the kind words
Wow! Amazing shots Nigel. Well done! 🙂
Jesus! I had to stop mid viewing to write that this is just absolutely phenomenal footage. Love the drone work. A lot of the time, an image struggles to capture the expansiveness of a particular setting but the drone just nails it. One of your best vlogs yet. Congrats... loving your work more and more each time you release something.
+Jeff Freestone thanks Jeff! Totally awesome comment! Hope you managed to finish it
I am so glad I’ve just subscribed. Best vlog and images I have seen on CZcams, and I’ve seen a lot. 👍
Excellent video and images, the opening scene was truly breathtaking.
Really awesome episode. So glad I found your channel. I think it is going to grow big real fast. Your enthusiasm, years off experience, calm and precise personality is great to watch. Very motivating stuff. Keep up the great work! :)
+Krisztián Kapitány that is really kind of you! Hope so! 👊👍👊
You are an inspiration. I hope to meet you one of these days in my travels. Thank you for your creativity.
Nigel, another great video! I was in two minds to get a drone, the Mavic being the weapon of choice, your footage has now inspired me to go ahead and get one! Purely beautiful shots. Keep up the great work.
+Ben McDonald you won’t regret it - it is an amazing drone!
Thank you for this. Another beautiful video. I've only really found this channel in the last few weeks but love the content and the presentation style.
+Howard Jameson thanks Howard! Glad you found it! And cheers for the kind words! Appreciate it
Absolutely sensational Nigel. My favourite vlog of yours. And the images and footage were outstanding.
+Marc Gardner thanks Marc - that is really kind! 👊
What is there to say that hasn´t already been said? This is top notch Nigel! I really enjoyed your passion when telling the background and your personal story. Im sure it will help people to reflect over why they have their own passion for certain things in life such as landscape photography, help them become better storytellers but also even with their life in general. We all need ways to blow off steam... Your pictures are fantastic and your droneshots simply world class! Thanks for the inspiration!!
+Patric Arvidsson calm down Patric - ha - I will take world class any day! Really appreciate it!
It's the first time I've seen this video as I only subscribed to your vlog a month or so ago, and it's definitely my favourite. The images are just breathtaking and the pic of the trees in fog is achingly beautiful. It's also so true what you say about photography. Even though I'm a rubbish photographer myself, there's nothing that makes me relax more or catches my imagination so much. Whether it's looking, really looking at stunning scenery or just clowning around with a stop motion video. :)
Excellent vid, Nigel. Excellent topic and insight into your life!
+minervasowl thanks for the kind comment! 👊
Fantastic video Nigel....and some epic drone footage. Well done!
Many thanks Steph - really appreciate the kind words. Drones make it easy to get good footage.
Nigel, Stunning images! Wish I could savor such sweet natural sceneries with my own eyes coming from Singapore... Thnx for sharing your passion, really inspiring and infectious!
+Paul Ng thabks! Singapore sounds amazing though!
Wonderful, inspiring story, Nigel. There are indeed, many benefits to be gained from landscape photography. Stunning images and lovely drone footage. I really love your Monday morning image with the frosty grasses. As always, your passion for landscape photography is really heartening. I will be in the Lake District in February and hope to get a few good images, though they won't compare with yours. Thanks, so much. Cheers, Bob.
+Robert Blesse great! You will love it. I hope to run a workshop in Feb - still in the planning
Wonderful vlog, Nigel. Time lapse, drone and stills were superb as was the message you got across. Looking forward to more of the same. Thank you. All the best!
That is kind of you Trevor. Appreciate the kind words. It was very enjoyable to make this one!!!
Ive watched this vlog a few times now, and just heard one word which makes my photography poorer than the likes of you. You said you "pre-visualise" your image. That's something I've not learned to do. Great vlog. Great images. Thank you Nigel.
+Michael Jenkinson hi Michael. Thanks for your comment and watching my video more than once! Pre visualising the image before you take it is really important in my eyes (probably worth doing a video on it!). I have an idea of the mood, colour tones, etc.. that I want to capture and that then helps in composition and exposure. For example the lilac colours in the calm morning...
Nigel Danson ,yeah a vlog on pre- visualisation would be great. One of the problems I often experience is that when I arrive at a location is that I get a momentary sensory overload. "Where do I start???" I can't ( excuse the pun) focus on composition. So I tend to just shoot away and hope for the best I guess. I don't suppose it helps that I only get out once a month at best....
Lovely scenes and video Nigel!
just amazing pics and videos. loved it
Superb, Nigel. Some of your drone footage is almost impossibly beautiful. Your enthusiasm and obvious love for what you do puts your landscape photography channel among the most compelling on CZcams. Thank you for doing what you do. Your audience appreciates it (not that I’ve elected myself their spokesperson, or anything).
That is so kind Neal - really appreciate it. Love making them!
Absolutely stunning work Nigel. OMG! What a magical place.
+Anthony Hedger thanks a lot! 👊
Absolutely incredible morning Nigel! That drone footage is soooooooo good. Seems like those fells are a great place to shoot. Somewhere I have not really explored. Loved the video
+Daryl Walker cheers Daryl! Appreciate that. Yep they are great - not the rugged lakes but good views all around and accessible for a quick wonder. 👍
It doesn't get more stunning than this video
+Matt Zagorski eek! I know... what do I do next week! Ha
That intro is killer! Most impressive drone shot I have ever seen.
+kirkelicious wow! Praise indeed! Thanks so much!
Amazing Nigel. What a couple of mornings you had! Very, very inspirational. Simon.
+Simon Harrison thanks Simon! Appreciate that! They were special!
Spectacular images including the drone shots nigel. You know how to get us out of bed just to be there and experience those conditions. Thanks
All your images and the drone footage is jaw dropping!
+Peter Melia that is really kind of you to say Peter! Appreciate it! 👍
A very inspiring video Nigel, really enjoying your channel, thanks for sharing what you do. All the best. Cheers.
This should be required watching for those photographers reluctant to get out before sunrise. If they saw that misty view from Loughrigg Fill that you could only get by hiking up before the sun has risen, they would be running up those hills. Great video. Must try and do some of the Lakes when I am up visiting my Mum over Xmas.
Stunning shots.... stunning Epic shots
Great video Nigel! Keep them coming
+Tristan Tinn cheers mate! Appreciate that!
Absolutely stunning photos, most people dread Monday mornings but looks like yours was pretty perfect. Love the drone photos and footage and mist/frost too am now planning a trip to the lakes feeling extremely inspired!! Thank you!
+Chris Stark glad to inspire - that is the idea behind the channel! Thanks so much for the kind words!!! Enjoy the lakes
Stunning Nigel - simply stunning !! Your images totally capture the essence of two of the UK's greatest assets - Autumn and the Lake District. I guess we've all come to photography for different reasons and I'm glad you were able to share your background with us. I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit, by the way, by saying you were lucky to get the images. I know where you're coming from because we all think that on days like the ones you had, but you got your reward for planning and making the effort, so good on you. Finally, the drone footage brings a great dimension to your videos so more of it please. Thanks for sharing Nigel.
+tim scanlan many thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed comment - I really appreciate it! The harder I try the luckier I get 👍
I do agree with you. The pic with the frost is also my favourite. It is reeeeally artistic. I love it :)
ThNks!
Wow! This was a truly amazing video! Thank you!
+Sean Robert Ramuno thanks Sean! Truly amazing comments as well!!!
Love the opening shot with the drone going above the mist!I really enjoy hearing your thoughts in these videos which are a mix between talking and in the field, these videos are a great way for you to share both the moment and your thoughts surrounding the shots. I really need to start printing more but I just don't get around to ordering them online, maybe someday I'll be able to get a nice printer. Thanks for sharing the inspiring photos and video!
+Nick Swisher thanks Nick! Looking forward to seeing more of your Zion photos and videos!
Wow!!! What fantastic drone work and images Nigel. Really great video 👍 thanks for sharing.
+Lee Case Photography cheers Lee - appreciate that!

Cheers Ben - appreciate that!
Your best yet Nigel. I really enjoyed the drone footage and am so jealous. I too have the Mavic but get really nervous flying it. This video has defo made me realise that I need to get out more.
+Jo Wallace-blaker thanks Jo! Don’t be nervous - if you are away from trees then it is fine! It is meant to be in the air -
So fly it 👊👍😀
Great footage, great shots, super content! well done Nigel
+Rob Nitsch many thanks Rob!
Nigel - What can I say - Absolutely stunning!!!!! Magnificent photography and awesome drone footage, by far the best on youtube, really well done.

Lovely Nigel. Inspiring.
Wow, what some days you had, in such beautiful environment. Your Images was just so fantastic beautiful!
+Leffe49 ThAnks! Appreciate that!
Best one yet Nigel! I especially enjoyed it as I've just ordered myself a Mavic Pro 😍
Thanks a lot! You will absolutely love it... Just remember they are easy to crash - so take care on your first few outings. And watch out for birds and telephone wires
Great stuff Nigel..so envious ..we had to leave the area the wednesday before you came up and it was 3 days of wind and rain ! Love that drone footage, I did some "above the mist"shots in my last video and it's always a bit worrying when it disappears into the fog !..great to follow your journey and hope you are very proud of the cinematic content (and images of course) in this one at it's brilliant. Great to see your son up there with you as well as I'm know that must make the whole morning that bit extra special.
+Nigel Morley thanks a lot Nigel! Yeah it was good having Sam with me and helpful! He flew the drone over me
beautiful work. Loved every bit of your video. Keep it up Nigel.
+Mujahid's Photography Thanks! Appreciate that

Thanks Johan! Love showing my prints too.

Great story my friend! Also, your images are fantastic! Congrats!
Wow. I've started feel like landscape vlogs and photos on CZcams have been a dime a dozen these days. But these photos were just spectacular. They stand out as some of the best I've seen. Hats off to you.
+Denae & Andrew that is kind - thanks! 👍
+Denae & Andrew thanks!!!

Great episode and stunning light. Well done Nigel.
+Diego McCartney thanks 👍
That opening drone sequence is gorgeous!!!!!!
Thanks - appreciate that!
images particulièrement belles avec une vrais mise en valeur de cette atmosphère féérique. Bravo.
Where is the lake district? I would love to visit, and photograph it myself. Photography really saved my life in a way. It is hard to expose yourself to everyone in the world that views this video. It won't be all of them, naturally; but, those like myself who watch your videos, and knows a bit about the human nature, and how it has evolved into what it is today. A fast moving, always wanting/needing something more than what they have, and have seemed to have stopped appreciating what was given/gained. I'd say you, like myself appreciate each and every day that you're given. No matter what the weather, situations, circumstances, duties, distractions, and everyday/other problems that plague us all. It's still great to be there and watch the new day unfold before your eyes/lens. Thanks, so much for the amazing images you have captured, and the short tutorials/and tips that may help us others along on our journey through the realm of photography and the amazing images that can be viewed and captured in print. My favorite quote is by Ansel Adams. "You don't 'take' a picture, you 'make' it." Thanks.
Excellent Nigel! 👌🏻
Fantastic video - thanks for sharing! You just knocked me down with the view at 8:53! wow!
+b bayek cheers! My son actually flew the drone for that bit! So good on him!
First time watching. Love it.
+Alan Minshall thanks Alan - appreciate that
