- I travel to Snowdonia in Wales to wild camp and photograph the area with James Popsys. The weather doesn't quite go to plan but I still end up with some great photos in overcast conditions and flat light. Probably one of my most enjoyable landscape photography trips to date this year.

Green or red apple? 👍
Red :-) - the lost one was red and green but more red...
BTW: I did not get any newsletter I have subscribed for :-(
For me red and green delicious apples. I'm always curious when I watch you, James and other United kingdom CZcams's...fences and paths that you walk along and cross is it not private property. Here in Canada I see a fence that is as far as I go.
Red. Glad you didn't drop this one.
If he dropped it to the bottom of the mountain he could have went to the bottom and had apple sauce! :)
I was waiting for you to drop it when you were tossing it about.
I was chuffed with my drone footage, until I watched this... Fantastic mate :)
Thanks James - it was a great trip! Good spot on this sheep 😉
Wow! Your right - it doesn't get any better then this. Nicely done Nigel.
Thank you Nigel for this great video ! Beautiful shots !!!
Love Snowdonia, such a beautiful area to visit and explore.
Love that last moody image! It looks absolutely stunning despite the lack of light.
Great Video Nigel - goes to show you how quickly the weather changes and we are all at the mercy of Mother Nature. Loved the scenery thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Nigel. I liked how you showed us the tripod movement to get a better perspective. Another great lesson.....
Good stuff as always Nigel, some great shots too.
Loved the second shot better. Thanks for sharing. Always adapting to the elements.
Great video and images Nigel in not ideal conditions, but when you make the best of the situation it really shows. Looking forward to next Sunday :-)
I love the final shot...
Hi Nigel, new to your channel and wanted to say thank you for sharing your tips and stuff, you've re-ignited my love of landscape photography.
That drone footage is definitely marvellous!!!
I really enjoyed this, Nigel. It's always a thrill to see photographers really appreciating Snowdonia and it's amazing landscapes :)
My heritage is Welsh, and this wonderful video just makes me long to visit where my families roots lie.
Amazing shots. Congrats!
Great episode Nigel and co. Cracking photos, the last shot is stunning mood on steroids. Congrats on the apple this week too.
Going to Snowdonia on monday, this has gotten me so stoked!
Another great week! We visited Mt Washington and visibility went from infinite to 30 yards super fast. Unbelievable
Jim
Nice drone footage, great video. Thanks guys. Cheers
Got to be in it to win it Nigel. fantastic effort getting yourself up there
this video taught me a bit! great video and love the images!!!
Going to Snowdonia in two weeks...I will embrace those atmospheric conditions which fortunately (unfortunately) are common. Great video...really enjoyable and thought provoking.👏👏👍👍
Beautiful!!!
Well done. I watched James’ video first and it was very funny seeing two takes on the same adventure + some useful tips on leading lines.
brilliant . vlog so happy to see you in wales . 35 min drive . from my house to ogwen its a stunning . valley
You handle tough moments with good light in your heart...
Great video Nigel, you are an inspiration
Thanks a lot Charles
Glad to see you got to eat the apple this time, and the 'not quite chicken' curry. Some beautiful images in the evening
Sensational video Nigel, looks like a brilliant adventure. Stunning drone footage mate which gave a wonderful perspective to a gorgeous area. Some great tips here for photographing in flat light, very handy in those conditions. All the best!
Thanks Andrew - it was a great couple of days!
This shot with drone circling around you was incredible!
Thanks - love talking to my drone 👍
Great video as always. Just the perfect way to ease into Sunday morning.
Thanks Gareth
One of the 1st I ever climbed and one of my all time favourites- Tryfan :) that spot in the glyders is incredible...you had such great weather I’m jealous to the core!haha! Big thumbs up mate
Breathtaking scenery, great filming and yet another fantastic video Nigel. You are certainly inspiring me...
Thanks Damian
The drone footage was awesome.
Extremely nice video Nigel. Even if there is no light and no photographing opportunity anyone would like to be in that place just to njoy the experience such a majestic place...😍
Nice video, the trials and tribulations we all encounter, nice spot to camp👍🏕
I've been keenly following you both for several months, so it's great to see you working together! Looking forward to James's account of this trip.
Thanks Steve
Great vlog Nigel
Fab video, love Cwm Idwal and the surrounding mountains. You captured some great moody Images. 😊
Thanks Mark - it is stunning around there isn’t it
Keep up the good work.
Another really enjoyable episode matey, splendid location with some beautiful scenery, really entertaining 😁
Cheers James
Ooooo ! I had to look away when you stand on the edge of cliffs like that.Great images too. Thanks Nigel for your energy and determination, just sad you did not get the light for the sunrise.
Yeah - it was a shame - but you win some you lose some 👍
This is a really good video, thanks for posting. Regardless of the weather you got some great atmospheric images that I would have been immensely proud of if they were mine. And as others have said the drone footage is really very good. No wonder you were out of breath, it looked steep!
Great photos! First time I went wild camping was back during the heatwave during summer. A storm was rolling in that evening and just managed to set up my tent before the strong winds started! Then I almost started a wildfire from my stove as the wind knocked it over onto the grass so I was panicking and pouring all my water on the grass!
Couldn't sleep a wink obviously due to the thunder, lightning flashes and the unbelievable winds. The morning after, the rain kept snuffing my fire out and I use a wood stove so my fuel got wet :(
Can't wait to do it again!
Need to say, to see two photographers together on tour makes this more interesting. As far as i know it's also rather rare among CZcams. Yes, there are some collectives but even there, everyone does his "own" thing/video. Except "Critique the Community" from f-stoppers.
I like it. It does give more information and suggestions, if two people see an opportunity to take a picture.
Thanks for sharing and greetings from Germany, Nigel.
That visibility towards the end there reminds of what Iceland turned into my last few days there
Thanks, Nigel, for this video from Fog-Snowdonia! Really, I enjoyed it, what a lovely place. Wish I could tackle those mountains, but glad you did it. I just returned from a landscape workshop with Hans Kruse in the Abruzzo region of Italy. We had similar conditions, lots clouds, rain, then blue skies. But, we must adapt, right? Thanks, again, Bob.
What a location! Loved the final image (well worth the early rise) stunning! The image of James was also great. Keep up the good work Nigel. Love your tips ☺
Many thanks Kim!
Awesome shots despite the fog! Keep up the great work!
Many thanks Connor
Great topic, entertaining and really useful and a great collaboration with James. I follow both channels so this is bit of treat. Great B roll too..
Cheers Paul - appreciate the kind words
Another great video Nigel - Toffee Apple 🍎 for me ☺️
Great images,👍 Thank! Nigel.
Nice! 👍
The images from the first afternoon/evening made the hike well worth the effort. Great drone footage as well!
Thanks Paul
You managed to get some great images despite the weather, great vlog as always.
Thanks Paul 👍👍👍
You may not have got what you wanted image wise Nigel, but you got out there and enjoyed the experience of wild camping. Good on ya.
Great Video as always mate! that circling drone footage with you in the centre talking was really well done, you got a very strong feeling of actually being there. nice job!
Thanks a lot - love doing that 👍👍👍
Great Tut/Vlog..
Well what can I say another epic wild camp I am really missing out. I need a camping buddy love them images well
Moody better than sunshine love that place as well only been on low levels
I think the vlog captured your experience very well. Amazing drone footage and great images 👍🏻 Must have been quite a hike!
Thanks a lot. Yep it was a big hike
The best part was the drone orbit when you were speaking. Awesome sense of scale and perspective.
Thanks Ronald - yeah - it works well that bit
Llyn Idwal is my favourite place. So many compositions in one place
Thanks Ash - certainly are!
Good vid. Thanks.
Love your music... need to watch again to grab the link for James
Definitely do Kim - James channel is awesome and funny!
Your aerial cinematography is so awesome! Snowdonia looks a great place for so many varying compositions. Though the hiking would knacker me too...
Yep - it is a really tough climb - but worth it
Enjoyed the little bit of banter! Great advice, I find myself in flat light so often and have felt lost for what to do. Look forward to it now!
Thanks Simon! Contrast and shapes
Nigel Danson don't be too quick to summarise viewers might skip the video haha.
Great Photography sir
That "Apple" scene with the drone was fantastic.
And really nice to see you are pairing up with James I followed he's channel as well he's really good fun to watch.
Cheers.
Thanks Jens 👍👍👍
I absolutely love Snowdonia and especially that part! Too bad you guys didn't get to the very top. The drone footage was also so beautiful (along with the photos) :)
Cheers Mads - any higher and the fog was even worse unfortunately. Great spot though...
Sounded green to me!
Fabulous! 2 of my favourite photographers/vloggers working together in one of my favourite Mountain areas! I think a little bit of wee came out! The mist obscuring everything at the Devil's Kitchen ..., I've been through there 8-10 times over the last 30 years and never had a clear view! I really like the shots you featured here, can't wait for James' video, already seen the shot he posted on instagram! I actually might BURST!
Ha ha! Thanks Derek
Man I love your videos. Do you have any suggestions for places to camp out in west coast America?
Looked an amazing location especially where you would have been looking down the valley from your tent. Still captured some great images despite the challenges with the weather and light and really loved the definition in the clouds as it added to the atmosphere of the scene Nigel
Thanks - it was such a great spot to camp!
Bit of a downer about the fog, but you still got some cracking photos. The one of James on the cliff is a top shot. I tried to get my kids to get in to some of my landscape shots recently, but apparently I'm not cool enough for them to hang around with anymore (I'm sure I am, at least my Mum says so). Brilliant drone footage too. I'd say it was worth if for that alone.
the integration of the drone shots into your "documentary" is absolutely amazing!
Many thanks!
For some reason I missed this one when you posted it, but just felt I had to post because the drone shots in this were so good. The "apple" sequence was so cinematic. Really took the whole thing to another level.
Thanks Andrew - one of my fav trips of the year - loved it!
Nice job!
Great images even with the disappointing moments.
Really enjoyed the vlog, Simon. I thought that the images were wonderful and that the flat, cloudy conditions seemed to enhance the rocky surroundings. Wonderful sunlit shots would have been great, but there was an amazing atmosphere in your images. I love conditions like that.
Thanks John 😉
Spooky... How did you know that my middle name was John? ;) LOL
The same way you knew mine was Simon ;)
LMAO - good point, "Nigel". I really have been out in the sun too much this week. What's even more worrying is I work as an editor. If I wasn't self-employed I'd probably have to fire myself. 😀
Hi! Nigel and your friend, Fabulous video, My preference go to the photo at 9:28m both frames H and v Have a good day my friends!
Great vlog Nigel. Challenging visual conditions resulting in nevertheless wonderful images - good advice to focus on shapes in those conditions. Particularly loved the drone footage in this episode. Till next Sunday.
Yep - the lakes work well in this case as they are defined shapes
the evening shots would have done it for me Nigel, well worth the effort. Never been to that part of the world and not sure I would have made it up that path, so thanks for the trip by proxy!
Thanks Steve - it was a tough climb - but worth it
I’ve been trying to find James’ video, does anyone have the link?
This was great Nigel, as always, thanks!
CRUNCH ...Nyom nyom nyom nyom nyom. 😁 the sound of a happy chappy 😁 Nice one Nigel... Great video as always... I hope James didn't sneak any sheep home with him. They count them all you know .. they'll know 😂😁😁 All the best.. Steve.
That Apple was good
8:10 and James’s shot! Nigel, sorry for this and sorry for this comment but all I can say is... EPIC!!! Wish I had a head for heights. I bet you had a right laugh with James, his channel is also brilliant! Shot after shot on this episode Nigel are superb especially the shot with James in, lovely 👌
Thanks a lot! It was fun!
Awesome one Nigel! TBH i love the last image. My kind of scene, plenty of mood! Green apple?
Yep - my fav image as well... Thanks for watching. Lost an apple in last video....
Shame about the sunrise but what a wonderful way to spend a night and your evening shots were definitely worth the climb
Great video Nigel, Snowdonia looked very atmospheric and although you sounded disappointed with the weather it meant you got some great photos. I loved the one at 09.28 with the soft light on the left and the mist on the right. The last photo is very dramatic and powerful. I absolutely love wild camping for photography. My last camp was a tour of Cornwall, but due to a spinal injury and despite surgery I am unable to enjoy it at present - So frustrating watching you guys.
Thanks a lot Andy
Your welcome. And my good news - I saw a spinal surgeon yesterday and I'm having another operation so hopefully i'll be back on the road again instead of watching you guys on youtube.
The image at 9.33 is an absolute cracking shot. It would be really interesting to learn how you livened it up in post and avoided the grey and drab look I struggle with on such days!
I liked that morning shot, but the evening picture was great, especially if followed by a nice chicken curry,. Isn't that the national dish? I miss our local tandoori from when I lived there.
Great video, though you didn't get the sunrise shot which would have been a stunning photo, you still made the best out of the worst to get a lovely photo, at least you had your apple this time round.
Great video Nigel, well done for getting out as am suffering from a lack of motivation myself at the moment so hopefully will inspire me. Also really liked the music on this one, do you know the artists and where do you get it from?
@Nigel Danson
Are planing to come to Switzerland next Time soon?
You had better weather than I've ever had when walking in the Glyders. Full marks for optimism though and well done on not dropping the apple this time. Seriously though, you still came away with some nice shots and a great video.
Thanks a lot Robin... it was such a great few days
Thanks again for sharing. Beautiful place! Glad the local critters didn't get your apple this time (maybe just the core?)
Thanks Gisele - appreciate the kind words
Interesting video with lovely scenery, when you could see it. Big fan of James Popys, so will be looking forward to seeing his take on this trip. I'm not sure if I have vertigo or acrophobia, but my heart was in my throat several times when you were standing so, so close to the edge!
It probably looked worse on film 🤦♂️
I have acrophobia which has gotten worse as I've aged. While the video didn't bother, it caused me to realize that I could never have put my camera at that type of position. That why my "mountain" photos are always looking up and never looking down into the valley.
Really liked the 4:30 am shot. Those clouds are even better than the peaks.
Yeah - think that is my fav shot too...
Nigel, you mentioned that you cut back on some kit because of weight. On these trips, do you weigh your bag and shoot for a maximum that you will carry? As always, fantastic video !
Amazing images. Out of the first two I definitely preferred the 2nd shot. What do you think?
