Photography is about capturing the essence of a location. A great photo is a blend of visual beauty and story telling. Light is so important in many aspects of photography and great light often leads to a great photo. But not always. In this video I journey to the incredible Faroe Islands and show you how to get a great photo without perfect light.

You need to get a shirt made "It Just Doesn't get any better than this! " haha, ok back to the show
That you for sharing something that many of us will never have the opportunity to see in person. This planet could not have been made more beautiful. Lovely images!
I liked the picture down by the sea where you forgot your wide angle. Something about the flow of the water out to the sea spoke to me. Also I find it very encouraging that you forget things, then turn it around and make the most of of the situation. It is easy for us amateurs to panic and feel we won’t get the shot because of missing equipment.
your commitment to photography and your gentle demeanour just make for an incredible watch! time flies in your vids
Thanks - so kind
Many thanks for you videos Nigel, i am a very very armature photographer and have struggled with my health and do struggle with my photography but watching you out and about and the way you explain how you go about creating something that you can be proud of, makes me want to get out and have a go.Thanks.
Thanks you Nigel, you are helping me doing better shot, i always looking forward your Sunday vidéo.
Your content just keeps getting better all the time. I love it when you take us through your process of finding compositions and sharing your results. Keep on educating us. Thanks again. Going to check out the podcast today as well.
Many thanks Gisele 👍👍👍
WOW!!! Incredible waterfall's shot!!! Thank you for sharing your photo tips!!! Awesome vlog!!!
Nigel so professional and beautiful is this video. Your images on this block are really Outstanding, the light, the foreground work, amazing.
Sundays start with Nigel. Good stuff, as usual. 👍👍
Nigel....Well you have done it again. I just finished my first viewing and will undoubtedly watch it several more times. Thanks for sharing.
Dr. Danson, it appears you are the only professional photographer to visit these islands and more than once..
Nice work, as always...!!!
Keeping the foreground clean could be one of the best tips ever. I have some pictures that just do not work because the foreground is immensely distracting. Also super nice to see you fighting against the elements as it really shows that you do not have perfect conditions every time, but still have to work with what you got. Many other channels only show highlights.
love how you compose your shots beautiful photos specially the one with 2 water fall
Absolutely stunning shots - all of them!
Nigel, great work again!! That middle photo came alive when you printed it, so impressive.
The image with waterfalls is defintely one of my favourite from you, Nigel. Very good composition!
Its nice to see a few pictures without too much blurred water in them! and yes I think the water fall with all that black rock in is a lovely picture, my days of climbing hills are now over so thank you for sharing your images with us again.......
Sorry to hear that Des. I couldn't climb a hill to save my life now but I did once. I hope to get to that stage again.
Just came back from the islands and I have to say that is one of the moodiest places I have shoot in my life. Everything changed so rapidly and that wind!. Funny enough, I have similar photos from those waterfalls!.. Love how you can just go wondering around and find so many good places. Good work as always Nigel.
Amazing capture. The depth is amazing. I can look at it over and over.
Have to agree with you, the waterfalls is definitely the best of the bunch. Well done.
Really stunning images Nigel love them all but think I agree with you about the best one. Looks amazing there!!
Super episode Nigel and your printed image looked amazing, loved the colours and the contrasts and the image at !0:45 was great as well. Despite the harsh conditions looks like you made the most of it and look forward to the next installment
Absolutely love your channel!!
What an amazing place! Quite understandable that you could geek out and get so excited about getting down to the scene that you would leave a lens behind. I’ve done it and wouldn’t be surprised if many others have as well. I have to agree about your favorite image. Stellar composition and video Nigel. Keep up the great work. Cheers!
Thank you Nigel! Beautiful captures! I hope I'm as fortunate to visit & photograph the Faroes one day!
It is indeed sometimes all about composition, that ‘shot’ really is very, very good, very enjoyable, as always to watch and listen to your creative process. Many thanks.
Faroes look amazing Nigel. Great shots and great video.
Really like the double waterfalls , very unique indeed .lots of depth and layers ,great stuff. Now I can see why Faroe is such a unique place.
Hello Nigel! A big THANK to you sir for this lovely and wonderful photographic journey to Faroe Island! Most wonderful vlog from your trip to Faroe Island! Excellent photographed and you made very good decisions in your beautiful and unique photography! Wishing you all the very Best! Many greetings from Sweden!
You’re videos are freaking awesome man keep making them I watch all you content really helpful thanks:)
Magnificent work, every one a winner - the vertical Z7 pano my favorite. Very inspiring, thanks a ton!
Beautiful work as always.
Keep it up, your blogs keep getting better and better
Water flowing out of your nose, mouth and eye at approx 7:00 is hilarious :-)
Love that shot and the perspective of the falls. Nice to see that you managed to capture some unique views of the Faroes.
Nice vlog post. I can relate to your day and various pitfalls, like the high wind and forgetting the lens I intended to use ;) Good microphone because despite the wind, we can hear you well.
Right on time :-) currently finished tea, powered on my computer and your video was published 10 min ago :-)...I reckon I was one of the last getting the calendar...long way to Down Under. Communication was great and finally I got it - I will open it at Christmas :-)
Awesome video again, Nigel! I really look forward to visit the Faroes again :)
Fantastic cinematic opening to this vlog. Stunning final image as well
Really well done video, I always look forward to your tips on composition. Picked up one of your last calendars too.
Thanks Dale
Great video. I always need inspiration to get out on cloudy days.
Great video Nigel, great motivation for amateurs like me!
Fantastic video, thanks for your wisdom
The more you look at this the more you appreciate it's actually a really good composition and tells a great story. I've just come back from Iceland (with your old mate Mads) and whilst the epic landscapes are handed to you on a plate, finding the compositions is still a great art.
Amazing! Consistently the best photography vlog on youtube!
Def in the bucket list. Awesome images
Great shots and I like your tips and videos. Very good work :)
Beautiful. Well done. Hard to pick a favorite,
The picture with the two waterfalls is superstrong and a really unique shot from the Faroes - congratulations!
your photos and video are fantastic . thanks
Absolutely stunning place Nigel and the Images equally so. 😊 📷
Your advice on simplicity has helped me compose better photos.
Amazing work, great efforts, keep it up.
Stunning images, razor sharp. Love the cinematic feel. Looking forward to your Glacier NP trip, I was there a few years ago.
Beautiful images Nigel. Yet another place on my bucket list lol :-)
another great informative video with a hidden lesson...at least for me....is how yo mentioned how numb your fingertips were..which is misery..yet you remained giddy and excited to be out there capturing moments ...a reminder to myself to go out in harsher conditions..cant get these great images sitting home all warm and comfortable eh ? thanks nigel !
No - you have to get out! No. 1 on list of getting good photos
The image with the water fall is a great shot. Really works well. Shame about the light but you can only work with what the conditions give you. Inspiring video, always look forward to your videos. It must take a lot of motivation to get out in cold conditions like this
Great video - much inspiration. Like the new format for showing settings on images too
Good - thanks
Awesome(literally) image, loved the podcast interview, inspiring and interesting to hear your story! Wish you all the best.
Thanks - appreciate that
Two waterfalls shot - just the best of all! Memorable! Great video also.
NIgel
Awesome vlog - superb photography, ideas and inspiration. I was one of the individuals whose calendar went missing and so greatly appreciated your emails letting me know what was going on and not to worry. When my calendar arrived I decided not to open it as it would be a collectors piece: your first calendar.
Never miss a week
Peter
Epic video and stunning pictures! Love it! Can't wait untill next sunday to see the next episode (and scared Nigel :-))
Really some beautiful images in that dramatic weather Nigel! The one at 7:52 is a true killer!
Simply awesome Nigel! I know you have your favourite, but the images from the opening sequence I thought were superb, and very atmospheric. Looking forward to the rest of this Faroe series!
Thanks a lot David
Love the composition at about 10 min, Fuji w/10mm, vee shape of rocks and layered scene. Look forward to tips vids.
Impressive video Nigel ! Amazing shots ...... i gonna put the Faroe Islands on my list for next year. Thank you Nigel for the educational videos and showing these beautiful locations !!!!
Thanks for watching. You will love the Faroes
Loved the waterfall shot!
Great video as always and really great shot of the waterfalls (the printed one). I would really like to see how did the RAW files look (I think I heard You say something about bracketing) and how did You get to the final image. Maybe an idea for a next video? ;)
Great composition on that main image, lots of depth as you say
Can;t wait until the next video!
BTW I love that photo...and I love my calendar. I even went ahead and hung it so I could enjoy the last 3 months this year AND next. 😎 Thanks for sharing your videos each week. I really look forward to them. I'm a Sony a6500 shooter, former Canon, and I find so much info that is helpful. No matter your camera, the light is the same.
I was hopefully to see you use your Fuji more and I'm glad you shared that image with us. Hope to see more.
Great video, love your work!
Greetings from Florida. You're an inspiration to me.
Love the cinematic parts of your video espacially the drone shots
great shots, great pod cast...
Thank you!
Breathtaking!
I'm impressed with the number of triangularizations you have in the waterfalls photo - well done Nigel.
Yep triangletastic
Hello Nigel, congratulations on an excellent vlog and waterfall image. This vlog was up there with your Brathay Water and Loughrigg vlogs. It just made me so happy to watch this. You did a terrific job, more of this please....
Thanks Allen - next week’s is similar - so time in and let me know what you think.
Love the last image with the stream lead my eye into the sea
I love your work man !
I always look forward to your videos. They are so rich and informative. I’m pretty sure ‘it doesn’t get any better than this’ ;)
Thanks for the kind words
Fantastic vlog really enjoyed it. 👍
Amazing!
wow! Absolutely stunning,👍 I look, have liked! Thank! sir.
Good morning Nigel, it looks like Faroe Island is pretty weather challenging!
Great video Nigel!
I need to get the Faroe islands so bad. Stunning as usual Mr Danson.
Many thanks
Great location and great images Nigel, thanks for sharing your tips!
You guys in the north are lucky with long sunset, we, poor boys in the south, have shorter good light condition.
Thanks for sharing this Nigel! Really loved the shot with the two waterfalls combined, was that a horizontal panorama?
I bought your 2019 calendar. Love it! :)
Thanks a lot
Forgetting stuff is all par for the course Nigel, the other day was planning a little trip out, about 40 mins drive, 5 times I got to the car on each occasion realising I;ve forgot something, Sunglasses, camera remote release, filters, finally underway, half way there, suddenly realised, no wallet, no driving documents cash, just thought to myself somebody is trying to give me a hint and called it a day, for me I think its age related so. its so good to see I am not the only one.........great images, your content always goes well with my Sunday morning coffee.
Definitely, but great to see how the improvisation with the pano shot saved the day. I've never thought to do a vertical pano, but now I will.
Relentless pursuance. Daaaaang man! That looks beautiful but freeeeeezing! If you are not the toughest man on earth you are at least one-of-em.
Love the Sunday morning videos Nigel. I just need to postpone watching until I can put it on the TV because the smartphone doesn't do it justice.
Love the colours in this video. Somehow reflect the colours of Autumn. I think you picked the best of your images to print. Square Space comment - Some photographers are very dismissive of their support others way over the top. In this video I think you showed (at least to me) how much their support means to you and your channel, so it was just spot on. Have a good day Nigel.
Thanks David and glad that came across with squarespace because it is true.
Great video Nigel, I think that it can be tougher to get a good image with great light, but no clouds and mood than it is to get a good image with great clouds but little or no light. It's a problem I have to work around for several months of the year here in Spain as we get a lot of cloudless days throughout the summer.
Hej Nigel...what a great opening of this Fantastic vlog! It is really great watching this and so inspirational for me as a Dutch lowland lamdscape photographer, inspireert me a lot and a big Thanks for that. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching Dave. Always tricky in the lowlands. But always something to shoot! Especially those tulips 👍👍👍
Would love to go to the Faroes one day, but in the meantime Thanks for taking me there via the YT.
Wowsa, that light was pure gold! :D Looking forward to the next episode! :)
Cheers Mads... it was spectacular. And next episode is better. 👍👍
@@NigelDanson Nice reply from Mads......Another master of photography.
