What I like the most about watching your videos, is the things you have given me to consider when I'm out shooting landscapes both wide angle and telephoto. I now consider the small parts of nature, and started finding and shooting more close ups. Thanks for the tips,

One can never have too many tools! So I would for sure enjoying learning more from a mid week video.
Years ago I had some tennis lessons (alas, it all came to nought) and discovered that there are about 26 things you have to think about as you're shaping up to serve - where your feet are, whether to bend your knees, which end of the racket to hold, etc.
After watching this video I'm feeling a bit the same. There's lots to consider when framing a shot but I must admit that every principle you mentioned does seem important. And that was very well illustrated by your good/not so good photos.
Excellent tutorial Nigel. Now I'm going to watch it a again and write them down with the aim of memorising them before my next jaunt.

I like the idea of irregular mid week videos as long as they are shorter than the Sunday ones.
The issue i have with most tech type videos on YT is that they can become tedious if they are too long so short , quick fire informative ones would be great .
Your Sunday videos are superb as they cover the meat of landscape photography which i am much keener to spend more time viewing .

Really good points throughout and concisely made too. Whole different ball(head!) game assessing composition etc etc in the field cf looking at the image during processing!
Really interesting video Nigel. I find when I discover a really exciting location I tend to try and capture as much of the scene as possible in my image. This quite often might include a waterfall, mountain, beautiful sky, flowers etc. and now I realize, having watch this video, why some of my photos are disappointing. Look forward to seeing more of your videos.

Really liked this one. On the one hand, I really liked the notion of “resting space” - clearly similar to subject, but not exactly. On the other hand, I already try to get things like good edges, separation, and space in my photos, but I actually feel like I got *more* out of the examples because I have already started to pay attention to these things - I wasn’t simply overwhelmed with so many new things to think about. And the Iceland church was a great example of taking separation “to the next level”.
Great video! Yes, please absolutely keep the tool kit videos coming. As a beginner, I am starting to get into editing for the first time and I had no idea just how much tech and kit there is, what I need and dont need erc and the videos you have produced on this have been a major help. Understanding your workflow and how you edit has been really helpful too as I'd have felt hugely overwhelmed without the guidence of someome who knows what they're doing. 👍

Tool Kit Tuesday! Sounds good. One topic that I have not seen here and really not where, complete settings. One settings rarely spoken about and discussed when used is metering, the proper use of metering. Appreciate your tutorials!

Negative space and separation are so easy to forget in the field, thanks for raising awareness for those issues!

Paolo La Rocca a resting point can be visually pleasing. It helps the viewer relax and enjoy the image more subconsciously speaking.

Excellent video and one thought/image I'm taking away is your description of how the bottom and top, left and right edges keep you in the image. Definitely going to work on that. I think the gnarly oaks have an interesting abstract quality as opposed to treating it as a woodland image. It's something a psychiatrist would have hanging on his/her wall. Reinebringen was where it made me want to do landscape photography! In fact, one of my best images, imo, was taken there on my old Nokia brick of a similar composition to that one you said was your favourite composition that I took many years ago!
I always check the edges of my frame very carefully since it would be costly to mess it up. Fortunately, I have that huge 6x7 cm viewfinder to see all well!

Thank you very much for your tips. Can't for autumn and winter to come since here in summer it's somehow difficult to do landscape photography. Summer here is very hot and plants are dried and there is a lot of haze.

First of all, thank you for sharing these tips. Excellent elements to try to remember when I’m in the field taking the shot. Secondly, I’m looking forward to your mid-week “tools” discussions. I’d be interested in a discussion of using filters versus exposure stacking / exposure blending. Do I really need to carry a pouch full of filters or just plan to achieve a similar result in post processing? Thanks again for all you do for amateur photographers like me.

Great and very informative video Nigel. I am really happy to hear you have added an occasional second weekly video. And the content sounds good. That said, IMHO please do not get into comparing manufacturers equipment reviews often. CZcams is already full of them and a major turn off for those of us that just want to improve our photography....we are not normally equipment junkies. For subject mater I offer the following for consideration; Screen monitor calibration, camping tips, and different techniques or equipment for staying warm and or dry. Thank You

Thanks for the excellent tips and observations. I totally agree that wider is not necessarily better for landscapes. I have found that trying to convey the impact of a grand vista by showing as much of it as I can, often results in an image that is too complicated, with too many unimportant and distracting elements. Less can be more. As for unwanted stuff poking in around the borders, sometimes it just can't be helped regardless of your angle, but Photoshop makes quick work of removing these intruders, such as the bow of the boat in the image you showed. I certainly wouldn't toss an image i like just because of some small unwanted element that can be removed easily.
great volg, I have just come back from the lakes and one or two photos that i taken where a good locoation but i didnt get some of may setting correct, so this has come at a great time. love to see more about tech and kit as just satrted using ND fliters and not meny people say why they are using and when to use them. I print my photos and put them in a album and review them in there, coupled with writing where i went wrong, i also find that this me ref to go back to and a ref of locations to revisit.

For me, a photo doesn't always need a resting point for the eye. I really like photos of interesting patterns such as waves, houses, trees in mist etc. or your example with the impressive woodland. Photos of patterns often don't have resting points but I love to look at them and they are relaxing in my opinion :)
The seperation point is a thing that can be good, but you could also consider the exact opposite - finding lines that aren't obvious. I especially like the trees that are connected in your photo because they create a line together. I think the distractions are rather the problem that I have with this photo
I do agree with you actually. And rules are meant to be broken! I also think that in good woodland photos there is a place you tend to that may not be a resting point as such.

Breakfast with Danson, excellent way to wrap up the week 😁 I noticed the effect of aspect ratio with the photo of your kids (square) and then the lone tree (16:9?), can’t recall if you discussed that in a previous video, I think you might have done. Agree with you that your main videos should continue to be about the subject, we should be able to capture similar images no matter what kit we use...better glass and sensor can only improve on what they’re pointed at. Will be interesting to see a comparison between your 2/3 Fuji and full-frame Z7 on identical scenes. Keep up the good work.
