Nothing beats a Scottish accent in the English language and Kim, you excel in it :) Keep them videos coming.
Thank you very much Vincent :)
Kim is gorgeous
Composition is fabulous👌
Great video. I live on the east coast of the US in South Carolina and love taking sunrise photos at the beach.
Thankyou Kim some useful tips.
Lovely images and great tips. Thanks for sharing.
absolutely beautiful view.. great work..
Fantastic very good video.
Thank you Kim
I have to admit it too that I love your accent. I could listen to you talk all day long. Your images are stunning of the sunsets there. You do such a good job Kim.
Thats just awesome!
Great video Kim.👍👍👍
Wonderful!
Great tips today, Kim! Here's an interesting observation about height of the camera: my cottage neighbour mentioned he sometimes watches the sunset from his dock, then dashes up the hill to his cottage deck and watches what he calls "second sunset"! Height can make such a huge difference! And a few times, I have "made my own" sunsets by slowly varying the altitude of my drone!
What your neighbour does sounds lovely. Height can make such a big difference to light and composition. :)
Kimmy such beautiful landscapes I would give anything just to be there with you and just being there and listen to the sound of the world and seeing that orangiging horizon and just sitting on the sand and absorbe that spiritual awareness that we presive of this world of our higher selves . Realy enjoyed it kimmy big hugs and kisses ❤
I love how you talk us through your thought processes ... so candid, so inspirational and helpful. Thank you.
Thanks very kind Anthony. Glad you like my presenting style :)
Soo lovely to see, i look forward to see your photos in 200 mm.
Watching another video from you. Like to discover Scotland through your eyes. Amazingly beautiful. I have not been to Scotland yet (and definitely not possible with this Covid19 travel restrictions) but I certainly would like to go one day to shoot some of the places you have featured in your videos.
Hope you are doing well in this Covid19 disruption recrntly.
Thank you and fingers crossed you'll make it here when it's safe to do so. I'm sure you'll love it 🙂
You're amazing! A ray of sunshine. Love your work.
Thankyou Kim interesting video.J
10:53 I LOVE that pink on the water! Nicely done!
Wowser! that was a stunner of a sunrise. I love that beach - must visit again before too long. Thank you Kim
THANKYOU...
Thanks Kim, the always learning comments are gold !!
Thank you Ross :)
I love your videos n pov 'bout experiment n try different angles
While on a bike ride around a lake this morning I took several iPhone images from various elevations including one from ground level which included dew on the grass. The sky was exploding and the reflections were amazing. So your tips do pay off. Wonderful images from you as well. Thanks so much for a lovely start to my day.
Thank you Brad and glad you embraced the different elevations during your bike ride. Trying different heights can produce some very interesting results.
Beautiful, just beautiful. I like the fact you show the exposure setting when you show the final photo. That really helps to educate on how to expose. I love the water shot color that just gave the photo that little extra color that makes the photo. Your education regarding filters and tripod heights is fabulous for newer photographers as we fall into the habit of eye level photographs. Experimenting is a great way to learn. I 'v been taking photos for over fifties year and still learn something new every time I take pictures. Great conditions. Take care.
Pure and simple, as always a pure pleasure to watch. Hope you recovered from a cold swim and got yourself a warm chocolate.. Stay safe.
Thanks Roy - recovered very quickly from the swim...so much so I did it again the next day :L
Absolutely wonderful , stunning photography
Thank you very much Jeff :)
Beautiful sunrise and a great video-- I tend to do bracketing for the dynamic range of scenes like you had in this video-- I have found it very easy to do with Lightroom to put photos together. If you have not tried it, you have a non destructive way to deal with the light. Filters mean you have to live with the light as the filter allows.
Fantastic tips. MH
Good morning Kim! Yet more great images! As you are very well aware with the weather in Scotland it sometimes feels as if you experience four seasons within an hour. Well done Kim! Take care.
You certainly can John. Thankfully it's not quite as changeable on the east as the west but I sure have experienced the 4 seasons on many occasions! Thanks for the kind words regarding the photos.
Wow Dream Sunset in last video and now another in Sunrise.
You have been really blessed with these this year.
Fantastic images.
As for going in the sea which is going to be freezing I'm afraid you are on your own.
Take care
some beautiful images and your enthusiasm and presentation is really great too
Great images. I have also found that going low on a beach shot makes a big difference.
“Stupid o’clock in the morning”. Hahahahaha!
Another fantastic video, packed full of advice, inspiration and fun.
Many thanks
Jack Arigho
Great video Kim, nice to watch your early morning shoot..
Nice vlog Kim. You captured some lovely images, love the colours of the sunrise and the reflections in the pools 👍
Lovely images again Kim, I only get seascapes on holiday, living in the centre of England, but got some sunrise images at Bamburgh Castle that I was pleased with. Good luck with the wild swimming, brrrrr.
Thanks for the kind words about the photos Neil. Bamburgh Castle looks like a great spot. Enjoy your next coastal holiday when the time comes.
Amazing colours with that sunrise, lovely images.
It was a beautiful morning and thank you :)
Lovely video Kim, I admire your dedication for sunrise shooting, I simply cannot do it! Maybe in the winter when it's around 9am!
Thank you very much Simon. It can be a real struggle sometimes. This is the first summer I've really pushed myself to do it - so much easier in the winter.
beautiful images n location i love the colors ! sunrise is my favorate time of the day
Beautiful once again. The images in the dimmer conditions are wonderful, my favorite at 11:00.
Thank you very much Alex - glad to hear you liked the photos :)
I like the way you explained your strategy of exposing for the highlights. Three good lessons or suggestions to try. I need to catch up on your vids.
Another super vlog Kim and really enjoyed that one. Keep up the good work 😉
Hi Kim, great photos and video this morning! Until next time, I hope you have a blessed week.
Thank you David - you too :)
Loved the tutorial beautiful images the feathered texture almost looked like a map , thank you for all the tips 👍
You're much braver than me going swimming in that sea, it looks freezing. 🥶🥶🥶🥶
Brilliant video again, I done 3 sunrise photography videos lately and you really need to be dedicated to get up that early. Brilliant tips aswell. 👍
Well done Kim. Keep up the enthusiasm. Thank you! Your work is beautiful.
Thank you very much David :)
Well done for getting up so nearly! I’ll await the clock changing :-)
Lovely images as usual. Wild swimming? Brrrrrrrrrr
Thanks Michelle - glad you liked the images :)
Hi morning Kim, perfect start to my Sunday morning...🌅or any morning actually, love it. What a beautiful early morning you had, incredible. Your images are truly superb, stunning! X
Thanks again Debbie - really appreciate your kind words.
Great video as usual Kim. Hope to catch that fantastic light at Rattray Head and Dunotter Castle in 2 weeks time
Great photographs as usual, plus the killer accent. Your videos do have me looking forward to retiring next year. The opportunity to pursue the next photograph will be fun. Plus, rising at o’dark :30 everyday is my normal......
If you find yourself having a scene with a very high contrast and without the necessary graduated ND-filter, there is a solution. It works best with static scenes, but if any change is slow enough, this technique can still be used.
What you do is you take two separate images, with one exposed for the shadows, and one exposed for the highlights. You ought to have you camera on a tripod while taking the pictures, or the next step will be a nightmare. Once the images are in your computer, you use some software to blend parts of the two images into one: you use the parts of both "input photographs" that are correctly exposed and merge them into one final picture. This obviously requires a bit of experience with some editing software, but it's not particularly hard to do.
In practice, what I do with my two pictures, is put them in one layer each in the same picture, in Gimp, make the background of the top layer transparent, and then delete everything that is incorrectly exposed from the top layer. This lets the bottom layer shine through. The last thing I do is save the picture as a jpeg.
Thanks for this. I did this technique in a recent video when I was photographing the inside of caves. It worked a treat due to the massive difference in highlights and shadows. I like to spend as little time editing as I can so unless I absolutely have to, I tend to shy away from doing this. However, my editing style and photography changes all the time so may do more of these blended exposure images in the future. Thanks again :)
@@kimgrantphotography I also like getting as much done as possible by the time I press the shutter release, but sometimes work after that is unavoidable.
Bravo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Love the images and thx for the tips.
Thank you - glad you learnt something :)
Great landscape!
It is a beautiful beach :)
Your last day of summer Kim, our last day of winter here in Australia.....Love your vlogs..
Thank you. Yup - the autumn feel began in the air yesterday. Been a quick summer this year!
Lets hear it for spontaneity. I drive some of my friends nuts when I travel. I always know where I'm going but I almost never have any hard or fast plans on what I'm doing once I'm there. Before I retired my live was rather regimented with very specific times and places to be. Now that I'm retired I like my travels to be more free form. Loved the images BTW.
Spontaneity is great - allows for no pressure and the ability to go where to heart leads you. It's also easier to adapt to conditions if you haven't got a set location or spot in mind.
Hello Kim, great video with a good selection of photographs and the advice on how to capture our own. Thanks for rising at silly o'clock and for sharing but continue to stay safe 😷
Thank you Malcolm - glad you enjoyed it :)
Good morning sun rise beautiful light, Oh good morning Kim enjoying your images very beautiful and good information thank you ...
Thank you Bob - Glad you enjoyed it once again :)
great video Kim ,great images once again you've come out on top ,,,keep at it ,take care and stay safe
Thanks again Mick - very much appreciate the kind words :)
For the last group of pics, at about 19:08, you might have tried a polarizer, you being 45 degrees to the sun..
Another stunning vlog with stunning images. Each vlid is getting better than the last one. I wish I had known you have sent away for a new lens, due to health and advancing years I have had to get rid of my Nikon gear and would have gladly donated you my Nikon 70-200 f2.8. Stunning vlog and stunning images from a stunning location. Thanks for a great start to Sunday Kim ❤️
Thanks again for the kind words Martin. That's a real shame about the lens and you having to get rid of much of your gear. Sadly the lens I've ordered is out of stock at the moment, so need to reorder it again soon.
Thanks Kim, I now own the Sony RX10 iv which is a great camera ❤️
Excellent video, loved it!! It's the first one of yours I've ever seen, where have I been....lol. Anyway, subscribe is hit, and can't wait to see the rest of your videos, thanks!!
Really like the fact you turn the music volume down when you speak. I'm hard of hearing even though I have hearing aids. Are you interested in the new 14-24mm Nikon Z zoom lens? do you think an f/2.8 is worthwhile ?
"At stupid o'clock"... brilliant! I might steal your phrase. As in, "At stupid o'clock Kim's on the beach so "at sensible time" we can see her teach". Be well, Kim!
P.s. re wild swimming, anti-hypothermia blankets a MUST! (Is the woman mad? 4°C air could be 2°C water... Aberdonians call that "bracing", probably.)😹
Feel free to steal the phrase...heard a few others on here use in recently. It's a great way to explain the early morning haha.
The water temperature at this time of year is around 12 degrees (though probably colder in Fraserburgh than other spots I swim. I say swim...it's more a dip). I used to think people that did it were mad too but the health benefits of a quick dip in cold water are amazing and I always feel a real buzz after. You do have to know what you're doing though :)
@@kimgrantphotography This Aberdonian went in the sea
So she could be consumed with glee.
Naught were there except the birds
to hear her "SHRIEK"! Exclaim her words.
(abridged. 😉)
Aye, "the broch" can be nippy, my mum's gran was Turriff, mother was Banff... my cousins, Fraserburgh (now by Mintlaw) holidays in that part were always enjoyable.
Kim, If you use software like ON1 Photo Raw or Affinity Photo you can use their 'HDR' functions to combine bracket shots and it literally takes seconds! I refuse to get hooked on the Adobe Subscription trap so I don't know how Lr/Ps compare but I've used both the other programmes and it's really simple. I can't be faffed with carrying big filter kits and if yo bracket it's non-destructive unlike using hard edged filters and the like.
That was awesome Kim - so like the beaches near us (thousands of miles away). Google Rathtrevor Beach Sunrise - east coast of Vancouver Island (and near where Adam Gibbs lives). Be great to get 'the boys' to have a talented female in their midst to shoot the beach - I don't think they've shot it and have wondered why.
Another Nikon shooter, yay! I'm curious, being from Eastern Canada myself, where is that beach you are on, I'm just trying to get perspective of what/where I'm looking at in the world?
Great video Kim well worth getting up early for to get some stunning images. Just off to the doctors to get my ears checked because I’m sure you said you were going for a swim. Cheers Keith
I sure did Keith...more of a quick dip than a swim but enjoyable all the same :) Glad you enjoyed the images.
Hi Kim, A beautiful time of the day, sunrise great pictures, most enjoyable video, and beach, Maggie's Hoosie?
Thanks Francis. Glad you like the images. Can't beat a sunrise shoot.
Love the shots. I can’t get over the amount of beach showing at low tide. Here in Texas on the Gulf of Mexico we may expose an extra 15-30 meters of beach at low tide. I have my eye on a 16mm F1.4 wide angle lens for my Sony a6000 to take advantage of low light shots. I have all the telephoto I need with my Nikon P1000. Stay safe...Fred in Texas.
Thanks Fred - we have many vast beaches here in Scotland. This one is no where nearly the biggest. :)
Kim Grant Just can’t imagine these dramatic tide changes. Here in Texas you don’t see the beautiful pooling of the water like you have. There is such a relaxing peace looking at the pool with the rippled sand and reflections. I just love those shots you make. Honestly, I could live on your shoreline all day and never tire of it. Oh well, through your camera I have extended vision. Thank you so much. Fred in Texas....stay safe.
Hi Kim some lovely images in this one shame you couldn't get the the golden glow one at the end but there will be other days. Wild swimming in those temperatures brrr no thanks at my age it would probably kill me off lol. Until next time take care and stay safe.
Thanks again Clive :)
Hi Kim.. Really enjoyed your video. Can I ask what do you meter off and what meter mode are you using? Cheers
Hi Kim, enjoyed your video and the walk through. Nice to see your enthusiasm for the art. Guess your buying the 24-200 Z lens, if so, I'm also looking at it as I only have the 24-70 for my Z7 and want a bit more reach. I also have an Olympus with longer lenses but want longer for the Nikon. (Subbed) take care and looking forward to viewing your other videos,,, thanks Trevor
PS: swimming in cold water is highly overrated! Enjoy!
Ahh, it seems to be something new people are doing. I don't go in the pool(Arizona) until it's above 82F.
I absolutely LOVE it...providing it's done by choice :L Gives you a real buzz and only in for a short spell.
Your very brave to go swimming in that temperature, rather you than me. Great video though.
Thanks David - it's a great buzz
Great video Kim, what camera gear do you use for the actual vlogging?
Canon G7x Mark II. Looking for something better but it's great for carrying around and the qualities not bad 🙂
@@kimgrantphotography Im thinking about an Osmo Pocket for my channel; my current setup weighs me down.
oops I meant the sunrise images not sunset.
Hi what can you tell the difference between a 80_200 mm lens than a standard 200mm lens you got new thanks Brendan
You answered my question before I had a chance to ask you. It was whether you had a zoom lens. When you passed the seagulls in the sand in front of the lighthouse I was yelling Stop! Stop! Hope you could afford a new Z 70-200. ❤️❤️❤️📷📷📷📷. PS do you have a 14-30mm lens?
Sadly I doubt I will ever be able to afford the 70-200mm lens BUT I am loaning it for a few weeks soon, so will be making the most of it. Yes I do have the 14-30mm. I find it a bit too wide for landscapes but use it for interior shots and astrophotography :)
Kim Grant one or two versions back of the f-mount 70-200 will work quite well on the z6 with ftz and they seem to be selling fairly cheap used. Sure, they may not be as sharp as the Z version but are still quite sharp. The first 70-200 vr was a bit problematic, the second improved quite significantly and the 3rd gets mixed reviews and might not be quite as sharp as the 2nd.
Thanks Kim. Another great video. I have one thing to ask. Are the images sharp? It seems to me that there is a small amount of softness to them. I think its a CZcams thing and not you. I checked on the video before this one that you did and those images are tack sharp.
The images you took were none the less gorgeous. Great composition and light. I hope its just a CZcams thing. If not the images can be saved. I've used a program that brings it all back. Lighroom I've found isn't the best at it but you can use that, but its a chore and uneven I find.
Anyway. Loved the video. You are an incredible inspiration to us folks. Keep shooting and showing us your beautiful countryside and seascapes.
Hi Simon, I too found these images soft in places but think some of it seemed to be caused by the light on the morning. The shapes in the sand look sharp as expected but the softness seems to be in the waters edges and flat sand areas, as well as the more distant views. It may also be because I focused a bit too much on the foreground shapes, which led to the background being slightly out of focus. Will be something to think about more in the future :)
Kim, you seem to enjoy sunrises more than sunsets, is there a photographic reason for this?
follow along with an explanation of how to take pictures properly
There's no such thing as how to take 'proper pictures'. Photography is an art form and while there is many compositional and technical aspects to it, ultimately we can create whatever we feel works for us - that's where the fun and creativity comes from. Find your own style and photograph what YOU love.
Thank you friend
You such an inspiration. Thanks for all the tips!
lovely images Kim, I think the Scottish Tourist Board should pay you as I'm sure you must have inspired many folks to visit Scotland!
Swimming ? Billy Connolly says Scotland has 2 seasons , June and winter ?
It was more of a dip than a swim - pretty cold but really enjoyed it :)
Why are you wanting another lens for?? ...when you are saying go out with one lens ,..."it makes you a better photographer"
Going out with one lens now and again can really challenge us to get creative and make the most of what gear we have. It's a great way to learn. As I explained, I've bought a new lens so I can zoom in and shoot other aspects of the scene that I can't with my current lens. At the moment, all I can do is wide angle shots - I'd like to shoot more horizons etc in the future. I often go out with one lens but it's nice to have a choice now and again and try something different.
Kim, are they going to go into lock down again? I saw on the news that the UK was rising in COVID-19 cases?? Fred in Texas
Not lockdown no - they've reintroduced a few restrictions on hospitality and visiting people's homes but all outdoor activities and travel is still allowed so all good for now.
Kim Grant: Great, stay safe . Cases of COVID here are slowing down but still not at the level they are shooting for. The vaccine production is ramping up just waiting for the Food & Drug Administration to approve it. Hopefully in November or December 2020. Life will never be quite like it was but photography will always be the same...thank God. Fred in Texas
