Improve your Composition by Changing Perspective | Landscape Photography in Australia Nikon D850

- I recently travelled down to Dunsborough with my daughter for the weekend to camp and do some landscape photography.
The day we arrived the weather was changing with the wind originally coming from the south and then swinging around to the east. The changing wind made the usually locations a little harder, so we decided to head out to Sugarloaf Rock as we’d be protected from the winds.
Exploring a familiar location can be a great challenge for your photography as you look for different and unique compositions that are not so obvious. This is a great time of the year to be in the country exploring as the wildflowers including orchids and kangaroos paws are is full bloom with pinks, yellows, reds and blues, the bush comes alive.
We moved around to position ourselves to the south of the rock, protected from the wind and taking full advantage of the wispy clouds floating over the rock to the north.
On the front of the 17-35mm lens, attached to the Nikon D850 I added a circular polariser to cut through some of the glare on the surface of the water. I also added a 0.6 soft Grad Neutral Density Filter to bring down the amount of light from the sky.
I had two challenges, even after using the filters to even up the light, the scene still had lots of contrast before the sun had fully set so I bracket the scene with 5 shots to ensure I had all the detail in the shadows and had protected the highlights. The second challenge was that I didn’t think I had the best composition, so I moved the tripod up the rocks for a better perspective looking down on the water and capturing the clouds in the sky which were now catching some beautiful pink colour.

Nailed it again Andrew. Don't settle with your first perspective
Me too, loved the b-roll. As always the stills were beautiful too.
Enjoy watching your channel Andrew, i get a lot of insight from watching you do what you do. Love the way you process your images there never over done and the music and the way you film your videos gives me a sense that im there with you. Thanks mate keep them coming.
The last vertical image is perfect example of keeping the search ON for the right perspective and you will find it in the end. Very nice video :)
Some great captures of Sugarloaf Rock Andrew. It is most definitely now on the photography bucket list.
Lovely images of Sugarloaf Rock. I especially liked your wildflower montage, too - it reminded me how much I miss the South West, and I could almost smell the incomparable delight of the wildflowers in spring in SW WA. Thanks!
Your videography is getting better and better if that is all possible. Love that you have your apprentice in tow as well. It’s something I really enjoy doing with mine and hopefully they have wonderful memories for life.
Thank you for showing the effects of both polarizer and ND filter. And your detailed explanation of the conditions of the place also very informative. It teaches me that I have to take all conditions into an account in order to take good photograph and changes our plans accordingly. You are not only very good photographer but also good teacher.
Lovely Spring "down under" Andrew. The rocks on that beach have such rich texture, color, and contrast - plus the aqua water, makes for a beautiful location and set of images. Here in NY we're enjoying our "second Spring" with the Fall color. Winter is around the corner. Cheers.
Beautiful images Andrew. What a great location.
Super work, Andrew, I particularly liked the last two, especially the second to last. But I liked all the others, too!
You captured some wonderful shots at a great location. I enjoy your videos. Thank you from the Midwestern USA.
The last one was my favorite.
Gorgeous images and well processed in HDR. You were able to get the full dynamic range of the scene with beautiful colors and tones. You are right, the water channel in the last shot adds a great leading line. I like the landscape version better. Cheers!
The last picture was the best. I like it. I enjoyed watching this vlog. See You!
B-roll was awesome in this Vlog
those are some beautiful tips for changing perspective!
thanks for sharing all this beautiful content with us!
really enjoyed watching this
Great shots as always love that last one.
Excellent, as always!
Impressive b roll and thoroughly enjoyed the whole video😎
Love the diagonal on the clouds. Nice shot Andrew.
Stunning B-roll, Andrew, and hello to Sophie! Wouldn’t knock any of the frames but the last horizontal was my favourite. Thanks for a great vid.
Woow. Great shots Andrew ! Enjoyed the video 👍
as usual you are the best photographer now .. keep making great shot and share videos .. Great job man
Beautiful Andrew! I have not seen anyone bracket with filters before. Thanks for that!
Fantastic production and content, Andrew.
Great video Andrew!
You sure got some nice images out of that shoot . Keep up the good work!
Nice image, love the colors..
Nice location thanks for sharing
Very nice! Thanks for the tips.
Excellent.....😊
Great to see you moving to get alternative shots. I find myself sticking to one place to often and missing a variety of images when I get back to the computer.
Beutiful pictures
Really good video mate. It's all too easy to turn up at a view point, setup the camera and then not move. You made your point very well, with some super images - just my cup of tea :-)
Very nice. 😊
nice spot, i liked the longer exposures better than the short ones, i would have liked to see an 8 to 10 sec one ;)
Man the intro has an almost nostalgic feel to it. Fantastic colour and videography work. Another great Vlog Andrew.
the rocks in the background are wonderful
One of my favourite things about that location as those rocks, they are amazing, cheers! :)
A big WOW! on the beauty of that location. Great video Andrew.
Thanks James, the place looks stunning when the wildflowers are out! 👍
Gorgeous location and stunning images as always. Loved the colours and enjoyed your b-roll showing the wildflowers.
Nice shots Andrew hope Sophie enjoyed it hope she’s not like my daughter likes photography but thinks me vloging is cringeworthy 😜
We went to Bunkers Bay Sunday of this Last weekend, saturday was horrid conditions , would of love conditions like in this Vid :)
Neat, I really enjoying watching you figure out what you're looking for and how you worked the scene.
As always very helpful info, each time I venture out I'm looking and taking my time to achieve the right composition, Thank You. Really enjoy your videos.
Cool video
Another brilliant video. Thanks!
Thanks so much Darren, appreciate it! :)
Lovely Seascape images. The location Andrew looked very interesting. Think you made the best of it.
Excellent vlog Andrew and tips on perspective and composition along with some beautiful shots.
Awsome! And fantastic colours over there Andrew.
Beautiful images of what could have been a very ordinary shot
Thanks Walter, yes the scene was looking a little ordinary but at the light softens and we explore a little more the compositions are discovered, cheers!
First! Always good to see the local flavour! Great work Andrew.
Haha, Thanks James, is the water still running at Lesmurdie?
@@Andrew_marr actually haven't been back yet since the peak of winter. May still get a chance. I have been spending so much time Southwest the past couple of months.
I know, I've been watching your IG feed!
@@Andrew_marr I appreciate that! Please keep the videos coming. Maybe one of these days I can join you.
fanatic clip loved every mim of it
Thanks for that Simon! 👍
Beautiful seascape images Andrew. Thinking of doing the Cape to Cape walk as my next multiday Australian hike, this vlog has convinced me!
10:46 vertical my favorite. Lovely spot. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome vid mate. Love the B roll... Missed the Premiere... i think I was sleeping :D
Love your vids man... damn I wish I had a D850. I’m stuck with an a6300 and a Samyang 12mm
lovely video Andrew if I were to choose I think the second last shot is the better in my humble opinion. Well done
Great stuff as always! Looked like a great little trip! Cheers!
Beautiful video footage, music, and photos (your third is my favorite). I shoot lots of flowers. Keep it up; flowers are cool!
Your neck of the world has some of the most amazing plant forms! While they have made their entrance here in California, it is nice to see them in their native state.
Enjoyed this Andrew and certainly the location looked very interesting. Loved the colours and contrasts in all the images and the b-roll was fantastic.
Thanks Jim, I'm trying a few new techniques to attempt to share a little more than just the photography. It really is a stunning location!
Always enjoy your videos Andrew. I like your editing and your story telling and production of these videos keeps getting better with each one, thanks for sharing, cheers.
Thanks Craig, I really appreciate the support. I tried a few new techniques to share a little more of the location, it really is stunning with the flowers out, cheers mate! 👍
Super pix. \lovely wispy clouds. Well done. JA - UK
Thanks for that John, I'm also happy to see wispy clouds, that usually means colour! 👍
Thanks for sharing your thoughts,,the last composition is definitely better..
Thanks Asimesh, yeah I think the high perspective really helped! 👍
Quite a lovely trip....I see spring has sprung down under...A nice change from the Tasmania trip.
Right now we are visiting the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains and experiencing fall colors.
Thanks Steve, I have more Tassie videos coming but I thought I'd have a break and share some local content. Spring is everywhere here, so the bush is looking lovely. The mountains where you are must look amazing this time of the year. Soon it will be summer and too hot and windy for landscape photography. I'll share the other Tassie videos then, cheers! 👍
I've mentioned this before Marrsy, your video composition is very creative, as creative as your stills, you have an eye for it. It is a pleasure to watch. Did you contact the Tasmanian tourist board as I suggested( before Ben Fewtrell does)?
Great content as always! Loved the b-roll! The hand held vlog clips seemed pretty jittery though. Not sure if stabilisation would have fixed it or whether there was something else going on? Favourite shot was 11:15.
Beautiful work. Are you noticing more resolution and changes with your images from the D-810 to the D-850? I have been watching your videos for quite some time now and your compositions on the shorelines are very well executed. I look forward for some city shots as well Andrew especially panoramas and the like. Cheers.
I’ve still never been myself 🤨 Looks like there’s plenty of opportunity for different shots as opposed to the standard angle (from the viewing platform??) that you usually see. Nice one :)
Great shots. Just wondering, were you in apeture priority when you took the bracketed photo?
GREAT STUFF MATE , I live in Dunsborough so always love to see your ideas and photos when your down here. I lost my brand new Mavic 2 Pro in the ocean while filming Dolphins about 300mtrs from where you took those photos , so pissed off !! Was just wondering , what video editing software to you use/recommend. Thanks mate
Great photography. When photographing on a beach, how to you over come fine sand into your camera and/or lenses?
Thanks for your comment and question James. I'm careful when on the beach but not overly cautious. The sand is not as bad as the salty sea spray that can be an issue. It's because of these situations that I need equipment that is well built and has solid weather sealing, which the D850 and Nikon lenses have! :)
Mate if your B-roll is always going to be this sexy, im just going to quit! What was that filmed on? Has to be the D850 at 120fps and the rest with the Fuji? Did Sophie enjoy the trip too? Man that was lucky you had those Lee filters too :) Great images as usual. The last vertical shot was my favourite (no surprise coming from me, right?!)
When you bracket are you varying your shutter speed and keeping your aperture the same or do you vary ISO?
They are all nice, my favourite would be one of the single exposures (sorry I cannot appreciate blended/HDR/focus stacked/composite shots) at 9:32 cause it has a bit of foreground element; the only weird thing for me in it, is the horizon which is almost in the middle of the frame and makes the scene/rock a bit uneasy/undecided. I know you tried to go higher for the clouds and the water channel but maybe I would have tried a bit lower and narrower. I do appreciate you have a cape on the right hand side of the frame and you wish to also separate your rock from it and by getting lower maybe that separation suffered but then maybe this rock/composition was not meant to be taken from your point. Maybe another day/time when there is no or less wind you can approach this rock from a different perspective. Tnx for sharing and taking us along. It is a lovely place, time is so limited once the sun starts going down that it is amazing that you had time to try different compositions as well as video record, report, and appear calm for the video, I couldn't (esp. when things don't go my way :-))
