    Another tour through the alpha version of Bloodborne looking for cut content, this time we explore the later half of Central Yharnam, this time exploring through the aqueduct and sewers through to the fight with Father Gascoigne to hear some cut dialogue and see some changed and unseen things along the way.

      Because the game is predicated on mystery and piecing together it’s world and story through context clues. The cut content gives us an insight (pun intended) into a lot of intended themes and it’s like a small mystery/mini story into itself. I don’t think this type of content would be engaging for any other type of game than the Soulsborne titles and games like them.

    The fact that Gascoigne says Umbasa is super interesting. Even though it was cut, his armor set says he’s from a foreign land, and “Father” is not actually a title the Healing Church uses. I think they’re hinting that he’s from Boletaria, but saying “Umbasa” would be too obvious of a hint.

      Based on a bunch of other cut stuff, it seems like the very early idea was literally Demon's Souls 2 (if I remember correctly, the text "Demon's Souls 2" is in the BB game data). Also ties into the unfinished/unused content in Demon's Souls for the broken 6th archstone, which were beast-like human/animal hybrid warriors (check them out on the wiki). There's wolf, bear, and hyena warriors as well as an owl mage.

    the fact that gascoigne has a lot more sounds of suffering from his transformation is interesting, since i wondered if beasthood ever caused pain of any sort, i kinda wish they left it in for lore reasons to go on about but at the same time I can see why they took it out kinda would take away from the fight and get a little irritating to listen to after a prolonged time and it kinda was taking away from the intensity of the fight,

      @Grym Good point, but what with bloodborne diving into its own lore which I mean yes we can use preconceived notions of already established monsters and werewolf but since the game strictly goes on its own merits, left me wondering to what extent does the transformation effect and if hunters with their insight and affliction with the churches blood would make a difference since our hunter in the game for instances the players hunter being unaffected by beasthood when their hand transformation during visceral attacks.

      @@jouchikitsune - Has the slightly enlarged hand during the visceral been confirmed as an actual transformation anomaly for the hunter? Because I feel like it was just a design choice to showcase the intensity of the visceral and the amount of force the hunters exerting during the attack.

    I love the investigative, file searching, data mining kind of video game research because it reminds me of first going into a game's files as a kid and discovering the sound files and the bitmaps and wondering about things I didn't understand.
    Game files and alphas are like the covered brushwork underneath a finished painting: there's a story of the process in there.

      OrigamiPhoenix Same. It's fascinating, because you get to see how several ideas are reshaped or repurposed to serve another goal.
      For example, the Chalice Dungeon that contains the lake of mud and the unfinished alternate version of the Moon Presence that has no limbs from the waist down.
      The map was repurposed for the Orphan, while the idea of the Moon Presence variation was implemented in Laurence's 3rd stage, where he loses his legs.
      It's the wonder of game design for those that can't actually design anything, like myself.

      This comment brought back memories of using an Action Replay cartridge on the PSone to look at the game files. Listen to the music and see images for textures and stuff. Watching FMVs and cutscenes and figuring out what was what :-)

      I'd assume the cainhurst set and the secret sniffer bow dudes set, the cut names fit the motif with a blood hunter and the spy hunter (not someone that hunts spies but is instead a spy.)

    As you're crossing the slightly unfinished bridge just before the Gascoigne fight, In the final version if you look off the sides below you can see down into Old Yharnam into the BSB boss arena and the areas immediately surrounding it. I'd be curious to see if those views exist in the alpha.

    I really wish there was more rescuing and exploring to be done in yarnham, also the lack of enemy health bars or glowing focus points really makes it more atmospheric

    Very very interesting stuff here, Gascoigne was able to break the tomb stones in his human form (which they probably changed for newer players) the alpha rifle spear looks similar to some NPC rifles in the final game (with the wooden finish) and two armour sets at the beginning of the game would have been really cool.

    One thing I've wondered, the original Bloodborne trailers had much more interesting lighting, i.e. Vicar Amelia's bossroom in the final game has no dynamic shadows versus the trailer where it does.
    I wonder if there's a way to trigger some kind of "pre release" lighting?

      Probably not, the ps4s' performance was a major problem for this games development. They probably just used the game assets in a software like blender.

    I wish they would have left in "Umbasa", even if the game made no other references to it other than a few NPCs.
    It is clear this game was meant to be a sequel to Demon's Souls since the Old One was obviously a Great One, and that magic is directly tied to the Great Ones in both games (which is why Sage Freke does not want you to defeat the Old One in DS). Not to mention the DS-styled armor you find in the chalice dungeons... BB is like a continuation several hundred years after the Old One was put back to slumber, and the Soul Arts/Miracles were lost to the world until the Great Ones were discovered yet again in the chalice dungeons.

      I dunno man, a ton of the stuff in the chalice dungeons also SCREAMS Dark Souls, especially the Keeper and Watchdog of the Old Lords, and all the focus on fire. Of course if you believe that all three series take place in the same universe this distinction becomes irrelevant.

    Hey guys, if the Theme in the Alphas was of a Nightmare, then the Blood Vials may have been something like a "Ecto Vial" or "Serum Vial", something thar kept the hunter Asleep, it makes sense because of the Blue colors of the animation, and plus, maybe its a Stretch, but it reminded me of tbe Ghost in the Warp Chairs

    In Gascoigne's other cut dialogue when you summon him he talks about how he loves the smell of the hunt before laughing maniacally, right? Interesting that in the fight he says he hates the smell of blood. Trying to reject his impending transformation? Also the "cleric beast's" original track does end up making more sense for Gascoigne since we find out that the transition is supposed to be for his transformation. It's fascinating how hodge-podge game design is!

      Just first areas of Yarhnam. This is only network test not any version from used during development. It was riped out of game just for testing servers

      Yeah it has the move set of Hunter Axe along with Rifle Spear shotgun attack. I wish they keep that weapon in it. Imho different faction versions of regular hunter weapons would be a good idea too(Powder Kegs, Choir-Mensis, Yahar'gul Hunters etc.)

    Awesome vid! A bit of an audio clipping issue at around 16:55 but it doesn't really matter. I remember when this dropped and all the videos showcasing this fight were being taken off of CZcams cuz you obviously weren't supposed to be here, so it's real cool to see it again

      Since we hear both Gascoine and the guy in Central Yharnam who takes 300 blood echoes say "Umbasa", I think it could be something like "amen" in the Healing Church religion

      Chris Sakai "Umbasa" is used in Demons Souls just like that, an "amen" for their religion. This dialogue could confirm that Bloodborne and Demons Souls are in the same universe.

    With every video you upload of the alpha build of this game, the more I'm amazed by the lighting style they used............the bridge you see in the distance from the spot where you'd get that armor set looks straight up breathtaking..........if someone makes a modded version of Bloodborne with this style of lighting I would *love* to play it >__

    Not sure if anyone else noticed but when he was fighting Father Gascoin it wasn't playing The Hunter OST like the final game instead it played the Cleric Beast OST that was used in the final game for just Cleric Beast and Vicar Amilea

    That slow motion fight against Gascoigne seems awesome somehow. The environment isn't finished, but still pretty immersive

    Interesting. I always thought it weird that we had to summon Father Gascoigne and that he showed up like a phantom if we're to meet him a little bit later, since he's not dead. After we defeat him, we cannot summon him to fight the Cleric Beast.
    I believe there was a quest line with him. I think hhiss alpha version is more interesting, albeit more rudimentary.

      I noticed in the art book it shows the concept art for djura and his original armor is the charred hinter set with a black tricorne, or in other words that alpha set.

    That weapon was actually the hunter axe + a gun moveset....
    Maybe it was originally a weapon that had to be ignited from the left hand? Maybe a prototype for the boom hammer? Some kind of other wacky creation we just never got to see?
    Actually, thinking more, Gascoine, when he enters his 2 handed moveset with the axe, seems to be able to do a quickshot shotgun burst after a lot of attacks. He uses his left hand gun for that obviously, but the fact that you found this weapon right below his residence....could this have been a special Gascoine Unique weapon? An axe that was also a shotgun, but in the final game they just made him use the Hunters Axe?
    Maybe the hunters axe simply originally could shoot in 2 handed mode with L2 and it's as simple as that.

      SiriusTexra seems like it was boss specific. Gascoigne in the actual game has his own moveset for the Hunter's axe and reload animation with something that doesn't look to be the blunderbuss.

      Huh, so they actually may have intended there to be a special shotgun+axe, and gascoine had legacy animations from that? I guess they thought adding in the blunderbuss to his left hand would let it slip by the player
      I like that the axe has it's L2 moves though, but it would've been nice to have another axe that also shot. Would've been a gladly needed other str/bld weapon.

    I wonder if there would be any way at all possible to render a daytime, afternoon or blood moon anywhere we want?. Ex. Blood moon byrgenwerth or forbidden woods. Hell daytime fishing hamlet. That would be amazing. Any ideas lance?

    I feel a little sad that there's so much content cut out. I get that some of these ideas won't work od whatever, but seeing a lot of this stuff makes me wish they made more DLC. The Alpha also has different lighting choices that I really like

    I know it's 1 year late but the armor you find at 04:40 is just the charred hunter armor set + Ashen Hunter hat (from Djura's armor set). Apparently, this armor set was supposed to be the Hunter's "main outfit" (just like the hunter set is the outfit used for the cover art, figures and etc) when the game was still called Project Beast. You can see not only the character wears this armor set but also have a gun (that looks a blunderbuss) that was cut from the final game, and you can even see the player character blocking damage like you can do in DS.
    I got to know your videos just recently and find them really interesting as I am such a fan of Bloodborne. I'd like to ask if it's ok, are you able to load the cut moveset from the player character that was available in the Alpha? There's was a kick like in DS1 and 3 but also the saw cleaver had a dash maneuver with a really fast attack (you can see it in the ealier trailers in Playstation's channel).

    Is there anything you could do that might reveal what those unused hunter sets might've looked like? I like the idea of a Hunter "spy set" and the idea is definitely intriguing, but from the sound of it it's possible it was never created in the first place, hence why equipping it makes your character naked.
