I think you’re right about the air holes causing the Esbit to burn too fast. Normally Esbit burners have a shallow tray for the tab to capture some of the liquid that “melts” out of them and limit air.

That Bushbox stove is on my wishlist. Google "Brian Green Esbit tray". A more efficient way of burning solid fuel tabs.
