    Pretty sweet. I'm still looking to do the alcohol thing for the first time. I'm thinking of starting as cheap as possible, so DIY'ing a couple of beer cans is the way to go. I already bought the heet fuel. Today is the day!
    My life is changing already... thanks Dr. Ernie!

    Looks good and isn't expensive compared to many stands. I feel that the Clickstand burner stand is the ultimate triangle style stand, it will except Trangia Alcohol burner, Trangia gas burner, Evernew Titanium Burner with wire adapter and solid fuel tabs with an adapter plate. Comes in stainless or Titanium versions and the most import thing is the wind shield that sits on the corners of the triangle which is unique as far as I know with triangle type stands.

    I really appreciate you doing a review of that little pot stand. I'm a fan of several of the Esbit products, own several of them. I might have to add that one to my collection 👍. As far as the Trangia goes, well, it was my first ❤. Me and Trangia, we're still going strong after decades.

    I bought this stand a couple years ago and really like it. This spring I found that my trangia kept slipping out of the side slots while I was cooking. I just put the stove on the ground and used the Esbit as a pot stand. Worked great. This is a great piece of lightweight kit.

    I press the Trangia burner just like you pressed the solid fuel plate in. To snuff the Trangia burner, while on a table or on the ground, press on the 3 edges and it will safely fall to the surface. Lift the stand off and cover the flame. I used this setup every day for 4 weeks hiking on the AT and it was awesome.

    It would have been interesting to see if one Esbit would boil a pint of water. I’ve never got it to do that. It appears it would have. If so that is truly amazing. Another thought is does it increase the efficiency of the burn with alcohol stoves. Pot diameter would likely be a factor. Also a wind screen would probably decrease boil time. Any decrease in heat time equates to fuel consumption to a point. I’ve found that sometimes the decrease in boil time is actually due to increased fuel consumption due to the stove getting hotter and volatizing the alcohol producing a larger flame. The true measure is rate of consumption compared with boil time.

      It's easy to boil water quickly with 1 Esbit tab... break the tablet in two (along the scored mark) and stand the two halves upright, like two towers. The increase of surface area means your water should boil around 5 minutes.

    If your using solid fuel tablets nothing beats the little titanium stove esbit sold years ago. Got mine about 15 years ago when REI closed them out. I think I paid around $5. My stove plus foil windscreen weighs less than an ounce. You can also just use your fuel tab in a cat food can and get about the same results but it's not as cool looking.

    Great demonstration, thanks!
    There is even a smaller and lighter stand (made from titanium) which can be used for esbit or alcohol stoves but unluckily you cannot fix it at your belt 😜 ... I mean the Toaks Pot Support for STV-01, ID:FRM-02
    Esbit (or Hexamine, what's the chemical name) is maybe one of the most underestimated fuels. You don't need bottles or cartouches with their extra weight but can put it just in a ziplock bag (and such you can carry also just the required quantity and volume and don't have to carry a complete gas bottle for just a cup of hot water), the tablets are waterproof, it is of similar burning value like alcohol, and usually you don't get problems to carry it with you on a plane if you keep it in the checked luggage. You don't even need necessarily a stove if you want to use Esbit - just put three tent pegs in the ground as pot stand, or use three stones, the Esbit tablets in between, voila ...
    And yes, it might be extremely difficult or even impossible to get gas refills in so many places. Esbit is also not everywhere available, but you can usually bring it yourself, what is often not possible with gas. Alcohol is everywhere available - every pharmacy on earth has medical spirit in stock, what is usually highly concentrated ethanol and works with all alcohol stoves.

    • @darthkek1953
      @darthkek1953 Před 4 lety

      As you say, alcohol stoves are more reliable as you can refill them anywhere, Esbit cubes have great utility, very reliable, very light, don't need a container - but they DO smell. Their smell & residue are their drawbacks.

    • @bangalorebobbel
      @bangalorebobbel Před 4 lety

      @@darthkek1953 I am mainly using the Heximine Cubes of the UK Military (meanwhile they are using a paste instead of Hexamine but one can still get their old stock) and found out, that my ziplock bags do effectively block the bad smell. The residue can be easily removed by using steel wool and tooth powder (I'm using tooth powder anyway, so I use it also to clean my pots and pans). The UK Hexamine cubes are available on eBay for half of the price of original Esbit and I could not find any disadvantage using that old stock compared to brand new Esbit.
      But if I plan to use a stove indoors (e.g. for preparing a meal in a hotel room) I definitely use alcohol, mostly in my M41 Swiss Army Notkocher or in a self made beer can stove. That doesn't stink so much and isn't so bad for health compared to Esbit.
      Esbit creates not only bad smell but also poisonous gases whiles burning and should better not be used in closed rooms, even if they are ventilated, but for outdoor uses it is simply great. I use it also often to start my charcoal when I'm in the mood for bbq ;-)

I use my Evernew titanium alcohol burner in the Nano in place of the Trangia to save weight.

      At home you should buy Bio-Ethanol Fuel from EBay, it's basically corn alcohol with a bitterant to prevent alcoholics getting drunk cheap; out in the wilds buy Heet yellow (USA) or Meths (UK), other countries have similar products.

    The Trangia and Esbit alcohol burner have indeed the same rim diameter. The Esbit is about 1/8'' deeper on the bottom. When I ordered the Esbit, I was assuming it was made in Germany. No such luck, as it's Chinese. They may have saved some money upfront, making them in China, but now the market is flooded with cheap Chinese Trangia clones.
