- This steamed Coconut Sticky Rice with Banana is a traditional dessert that's eaten widely throughout Southeast Asia. It's super aromatic from being wrapped in banana leaves and comforting to eat. It's the Southeast Asian version of "banana bread." This treat reminds me of my childhood, as it was one of the favorite things my grandma would make. Her home would be filled with the aroma of banana leaves and coconut. In Thai, we call this Khao Tom Mut Sai Gluay ข้าวต้มมัดไส้กล้วย or Khao Neung Mut Sai Gluay . In Khmer, it's called Ensom Chek Chem Hoy. Enjoy!

Black Beans - 1/2 cup
Thai Sticky Rice - 2.5 cups or 500g
Coconut Milk - 2.5 cups
Salt - 1 tbsp
Sugar - 1 cup (adjust sweetness to your liking)
Nam Wa Bananas - 16 or 20 bananas (see video for tip)
Coconut Milk - 2 tbsp

Banana Leaves - 1 lb or 454 g

An excellent video! I tried this food at an outdoor Southeast Asian market today. It was fun and delicious and the purple color surprised me. Your video was the first place I found that explained the color occurs naturally. Which side of the banana leaf facing down on heat when to prevent from breaking. The shinny side or dull side facing down?
Either side is fine. Both sides will work.
