Great result, wonderful device! A small concern - perhaps employ simple food safe (edible) finishes on wood in contact with foods such as vegetable oil and/or bee's wax. Thank you for sharing your skills and talent!

OH, and re: That red--Red is my favorite color and that's a particularly jaunty and satisfying shade, I vote YAS. : )
Pro welder's tip (for free): Preheat cast iron before welding/braising/silver soldering. It is less likely to break again next to your weld. Also, you should make a shallow "V" along the edges you're going to weld. As with steels, you want good penetration when you weld it. Unless you preheated off-camera, I'b be surprised if your weld holds over time, especially if that tang is stressed/structural.
Really incredible work. I know all these processes and can really appreciate the patience it takes to file everything, casting marks, sand blasting, bondo, primer, wet sand, paint.... It's so time consuming and just can take weeks and sometimes even months. But to have it come together the way this just did.... It's what makes restoration business so much fun a so rewarding. Good on you brother!
I love, how many CZcamsrs doesn't acknowledge the existence of impact screwdriver and instead use some awkward methods for removing rusty screws. Kudos man, You're doing really good work!
Just a suggestion, after you clean the rust from those screws/bolts and hardware, heat them up and drop them in oil. Rust resistant and nice satin black look to it as a result. IMO it would be a good step.
@@ai-d3982 why not for food have you ever herd. Of food grade oil. Like peanut. Oil Peal oil there is a food grade. . I just. Gave 2 that. Can be. Used and i use then for heat treating carbon steel .

Great job. Btw; When filing a round shape you should tilt the file backwards instead of forwards. This will enable you to get perfect roundings with a much nicer surface.
I love to watch restoration videos and enjoy them, but usually they are just making new items with old pieces. Sure they look cool and as good as new, but and collector would scream in pain seeing how easily original parts are discarded and remade. Conservative restoration is where the value of the iten is in. And here you saved so much of the original parts, that I can't help but commend you for it. Most people working restoration in CZcams, would have just thrown then away. Not you, you saved the broken handle and as much wood as possible. Thanks! Hope more learn from you!

What I loved about this video is you saved as much as you could, including the wood. You even painted the screws! ☺ most just leave them the silver color. I was surprised at the beginning when you used a blunt hammer and your strength to remove the screws. Most just used oil. You did a great job. Yes, it took a while but look at the results. Fabulous!

There was a small crack on first piece of wood you repaired that could have been fixed. Also, for restorations with small screws and items that need cleaning, a small tumbler that works from an adjustable-speed drill would work great!
Very impressive in how you were able to save almost all of the wood and use it again. And the little fill in's add to the history of the item showing the restore. Nice. And then actually saving the badly damaged handle. fantastic. To bad that last piece was just too far gone to save ....
Good job. You save more timber than I would have. After the welding and grinding, if you are going to use it, you might want to harden and temper that blade, otherwise you will be sharpening it a lot. If it's largely just a decorative piece, then don't worry.
To fill in the holes, try mixing sawdust into the glue before putting the glue into the hole and it blends quite nicely. Awesome editing and fun project!

Excellent job! I think I would’ve used all new screws, and used all new wood, like a nice closed-grain hardwood like Hickory and finished the wood with a food-grade oil. Beautiful work!
The screws were fine but if this is going to be a restored item that is going to be used some hickory and food-grade oil wouldn't be a luxury. Wood stain and acrylic varnish aren't the healthiest of choices.
Love the color choice, and I love the detail and dedication you put into restoring these artifacts. In effect your breathing life into something that someone else took pride in building. It's fantastic craftsmanship...bravo!!

Oui le brunissage à chaud ou à froid protège de la rouille mais je voulais garder l'aspect poli des vis. Dans tous les cas, il faut un corps gras pour protéger de la rouille, ou bien un vernis... Et pour le côté contact alimentaire, j'essaie au maximum d'utiliser des produits à base d'eau ( comme le vernis pour le bois ), mais c'est pas toujours évident de concilier finition durable et " safe "
I am struggling to believe you saved so much of that wood. What you did here was a legit restoration and it is impressive. Many others would have replaced the wood and still called it a restoration.

That resin cast to save that handle was amazing.
