Good discussion, nice to hear an outside perspective as well through Salvatore Balbones.
I kind of get the premise of both the speakers, one says Democracy is liberty to vote or fire your leader.
Counter Argument - what is the point of that power when in reality there is no freedom of speech, suppression & subversion is prevalent.
Counter to that - well that is not the issue of democracy it is the issue of the people, you should vote and change that.
One has an academic stand point and the other argues from the practicality.
I am a big fan of Anandji, and as an Indian I totally empathize with his pain regarding the state of democracy in India. Of course we cant sit back and say it's a great, biggest functioning democracy, when we have interference from outside compounding the already inherent issues - corruption, bigotry, religion, caste, wealth distribution, healthcare and what not.
The worst of all: Not knowing our own history!!! I came to the shocking realization as recently as just 2 years ago that the history we learnt as 80's kids is a glossed over history! no wonder it was was such a drag. Thanks to champions such a Sai Deepak, Sampath, Rajiv Malhotra, Anand R and many others for bringing out this cover up and exposing the leftist obfuscation.
But I am sure we are on the right path to come out of it, reclaim our glorious history and move forward and show the world what India can do, we dont need to follow the western ideology of democracy....
'right to own a gun' is not democracy, having not the need to own a gun is! Can that be acheived by law & constitution alone no the people need to follow a way of living which could be 'Sanathana Dharma'

What exactly is Anand Ranganathan trying to do here? Why is he treating Prof Babones like an adversary he is trying to shut out? Prof Babones has valuable points which are extremely useful for us to learn and understand. He has shown us how to dissect the global rankings and to take them out intelligently. A Smitha Prakash would have done a wonderful job of drawing out the interviewee and leaving us enriched with new knowledge. This, on the other hand, is an absolute disaster. There was also no need for Dr Ranganathan to take pot shots at Rajdeep Sardesai and Shekhar Gupta. You might not like their views but bringing it up on a platform like this was absolutely churlish. With the views that Prof Babones holds on India and Indian democracy, there can be no doubt that the shishya is an extremely shrewd one who has learnt only the good lessons from the gurus!
I hope Arth will ensure that they get appropriate interviewers for their next edition.

Knowing Ranga Sir, I won't be too harsh on him. It's true that he behaved quite uncharacteristically but maybe he knows things that we don't know of.
Personally, I have seen a few interviews of Prof Babones and he reminded me of one of my professors who could give references of books right up to page numbers and line numbers upon being asked a question but could never give the answer. To me Prof Babones has always come out as a guy who would invariably stop short of calling spade a spade, and maybe that's because of his gurus. Such balancing acts aren't required by transparent people with outright honesty.
Moreover, his paper on INDn Democracy is not about highlighting it but about proving how the methodology of the West is flawed and how they lack in quality and penetration. It's again about the West and it's flaws. Here too he repeatedly insisted that it isn't that the verdict on IND is flawed but that the methodology is flawed and thereby the verdict by inference.

As for AR's interviewing skills on display here, the less said the better. I dare say I wasn't surprised, given that most of these male Indian talking heads have egos the size of double decker buses! But to give AR some credit, I also find Prof. Babones's effusive admiration of RS, SG and KT incredibly grating on my nerves! I think the Professor is being too gracious towards those three up their own old arses geezers and undervaluing his own intellect, expertise and other diverse textual & digital resources. I urge everyone to really pay attention and understand the long term game plan of people like prof Salvatore. We all like the praises of India, but we have to understand the deception. As our economy is excelling and our country is growing, these kinds of western scholars will be strategically placed in India to praise India and it's current policies, because they know that if we truly get better policies and reforms in judiciary and freedom of speech and election then India will overtake American and the west. Therefore to keep us from excelling and improving they are now starting to praise indian democracy so that we don't change some fundamental issues and improve and evolve even further. Salvatore was not so much to say criticizing Indian Democracy. Anand accused him of patronising but i don't observed that this was true because Salvatore instead told the subjects in which India outshine every other country be it the power of Judiciary , power of Elelction Commission , participation of large number of voters during election in our country. Despite being critical of the left views we must develop the ability to accept good and constructive opinions for the left side as well. Else they will accuse of being andhbhakt, extremist right winger and conservative and other false accusations. I would rather prefer J Sai Deepak to debate on such topics along with Anand Ji against the left people. Thank You.

The problem was that Professor was very specific and NOT going to be part of the narrative of Anand, even though we saw how Vivek Agnihotri was targeted and Shekhar Gupta criticised the movie by openly saying I haven’t watched the movie and then went on to say how wrong the movie was.
Anand’s frustration is from that perspective, Professor just cannot sit on fence.
Now demarcation of MP seats, that’s because the federal republic has to give equal representation as much as possible otherwise we fear dilution of linguistic states which is what created Bangladesh.
USA has Indian Nations a sort of independent territory for Native Indians, and Australian Aboriginals what has the US / Aus done to positive affirmation to these populations constitutionally ? So that’s not democratic either.
Judges collegium in India is very difficult question to answer and freedom of speech is dependent on which party you support.
I think we have our fault lines … so in a way democracies simply cannot be compared. The day you compare you will get China as the most democratic nation😂
