  • I couldn't wait to get out and try my new Sony RX10iv camera - so I headed out, last-minute, to the New Forest just in time for a pretty average sunset. No great shakes in terms of the shots, but learnt a lot about using the camera. Next video features the first full trip to Dartmoor and will have a whole bagful of shots!

    Hello Nigel
    I've had my RX10mk4 since last October and after finding your preferences for favourite settings and allocating them to the buttons then its easy to adjust camera quickly in manual.
    The photos that this camera can get are excellent and in good light will rival any dslr in quality,in low light its not to bad but no match for a full frame!Horse's for courses as they say but think when you get to know the camera im sure you'll be very happy with it. Good 🍀 luck.

    Nigel, did you use the RX10 on the gimbal, an if so, how did it do with image stabilization? The reason I ask is I am thinking of buying the RX10 IV, but I am spoiled by the BOSS system on my Sony FDR-AX53 camcorder. Its image stabilization ability far exceeds the RX10, and I am wondering if the gimbal will compensate. Your thoughts?

    Good to see, despite the downpour, it stayed dry for you and your outing certainly paid dividends. The two shots at the end, of the sun setting, were stunning. Looking forward to seeing more of your new camera in action. Cheers Alan

    What size Lee filter system are you using on the Sony, Nigel, is it the 100m, regards.

    Morning Nigel. It was a big change going from a good DSLR set up to a Bridge Camera. Usually, people do it the other way round. I completely understand myself, I have the Nikon D810, a fantastic camera but I’m now in my fifties and find it heavy to carry around all day. I myself will probably switch to a Mirrorless system, Sony, Fujifilm not sure about the Nikon Z series though......
    Hope you enjoy your new camera Nigel 😊📷

      Andrew Hulson Thanks Andrew. For me a switch to mirrorless was not really going to help. The weight difference is marginal given that most weight is in the lenses anyway, rather than the body. I needed a more radical solution...

    I noticed you employed ND filters with the Sony RX10 IV in this video. Did you find they impacted image quality. When I use one on my own RX10 IV, the effect on IQ is pretty drastic. Unusable at longer focal lengths, when it's completely soft tipping into blurred, and even at shorter focal lengths the images come up very soft. How did you find your own images were effected?

      @NigelBaileyPhotography  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for watching. There’s no short answer to that really as there are so many variables that can result in soft images. In terms of filters, I would say that they performed similarly in my RX10 as they did on my Nikon full frame kit. The main thing that affected image quality was that the RX really didn’t like me stepping down to a smaller aperture - light diffraction was much worse than on my Nikon gear and I had to relearn what aperture to use in different situations. This meant that I ended up using a wide aperture than with my D800 and that had the benefit of quicker shutter speeds too. Basically, it’s a very different experience to full frame and it’s worth experimenting to find what works for your particularly conditions and subject matter.

    I just ordered rx10 iii was looking at iv but I find the app store will be handy on the iii :)

      terry nash I admit I didn’t realise when I purchased the RX10iv that it didn’t have the apps facility. That said, I’m finding it rather clumsy and frustrating anyway on the RX100v - have tried it for Timelapse but it’s awkward to use. Bought an intervalometer instead that I can use with both cameras. Also, have physical filters I can still use with the RX10iv. Thanks for watching.

    Canon must be taking a big hit because of this camera, I chopped my 80d and 4 Canon, 1 Tamron, and a Sigma lens in to get the Sony RX10iv. I just got fed up carrying all that gear around. I will have my new camera by the 15th Feb. Cant wait. I wanted to ask what does the 8.8mm refer to in your photo description please, I understand the 220mm.

      I’m not sure if this will help, but the OS map has it between Pig Bush and Halfpenny Green about 1.5 miles SSE of Beaulieu Road Station.
