What’s poppin, Valhalla-heads?! It’s me, MT and welcome back to the Heavy Spoilers show! The adventures of Richard Daniel Sanchez and Mortimer Chauncy Smith continue with Episode 9 of an insane Season 7…an episode where SPOILER ALERT…Richard and Mortimer meet their untimely demises at the big hands of a Big Foot.…almost ending the Richard and Mortimer program as we know it…if it wasn’t for the power…OF RELIGION! I, for one, am DYING to talk about this episode with all of you homies so let’s just dive into this thang…
The title of this newest episode is called “Mort: Ragnarick”...which is of course a reference to Marvel Studios’ Thor Ragnarok and the Valhalla-centric nature of this episode. And the episode opens with Jerry Smith setting a record for TV’s most annoying family member as he annoys his dead grandparents in the afterlife. This happens after Jerry somehow is convinced by Rick to become a guinea pig and die repeatedly for Rick to gain valuable scientific data about the nature of the afterlife.

Man, you missed a couple of harry and the hendersons references and easter eggs.
Love the detailed breakdowns from MT!
Loved the episode, I think the only thing to add would have been the yellow regeneration that Doctor Who uses when he gets a new form... but I didn't catch any of the references watching it last night, STILL a good episode which shows R&M is just a good show. EDIT: and I did lick the video and am already subbed. EDITOR pulling the weight here, at least on some references. You guys must have the weirdest and most fun meetings (and nerdy)
Why didnt you talk about the bit where they are crying and telling big foot to go.
wait how did rick cut off his power? did the monsters dieing have anything to do with it?
The pillow armor is a reference to the season 3 episode of Community - Pillows and Blankets
Yes! Thank you!
Yes, this
Man, this has been a banger of a season imo. Kinda sad that next week will be the last one for a bit…
for a long time actually. The hollywood writers strike this year will delay the release of season 8 by at least six-to-seven months.
I loved this episode. It was a classic episode of rick and morty.
Richard and mortimer*
Classic
Still waiting for Rick and Morty making fun of Muhammad and Islam.
The brainless Rick clone was a good bit. Legit, laughed out loud. And then when they had to shoo away Bigfoot!
It was better than the last episode, but still not that great. Def not a 'classic'.
A couple things you missed/got wrong, I think the Pillow armor is actually a reference to community's Pillow man which Harmon was involved in. And the Arena was more Shang-Chi to me rather than Detective Pikachu, with it being a cross between Ash and Shang-Chi
Not to mention that the reference Rick made with Odin being Spider-Man's uncle was true! In What If? 1#34 there was a short panel that showed an alternate reality where Aunt May ended up marrying Odin and became Peter's Uncle. Peter ended up making a appearance in The Ed Sullivan Show. But unfortunately The Ed Sullivan Show ended up getting off the air, leaving Peter out of the job.
The repeated figths against The Pope, at least for me. Were one big Dark Souls reference. Starting from "boss run" of killing the swiss guards in exacly the same places, to running past them after few attempts...or in this case just teleporting straight to the pope room. Aslo The corpses still being there is almost like bloodstains from souls-likes.
Oh Aslo aslo, the machinery Pope plugged himself into for infinite power is kinda simular to what Palpatine had in this one non-cannon Star Wars movie, some people call ep IX
ODIN WAS UNCLE BEN IN THE SPIDER-MAN COMICS 1 TIME.
The pose the Morty does when shooting the rocket is the same pose that Campa did in the movie Desperado when shooting his guitar rocket luncher.
🚀🚀🚀
Damn. I thought I was the only person that noticed that. *screams into the void* I’M NOT UNIQUE AND SPECIAL!!
@@mysticnutmeg I was trying to think of where else it came from too...The Matrix???
Always good to hear from you, MT! This episode was so silly - I loved it!
Great breakdown MT!
Great breakdown MT!! I love these videos, so glad you joined the heavy spoilers team
Thanks guys! Love you MT!
What a champion you are MT! Appreciate all the easter eggs! Always so thorough
Nice work MT.
The Pillow armor is most likely a nod to Harmon's community days. The Pillow/blanket fort episode.
Yay! MT puts these out so fast. Thank you for your hard work, I love all of your videos! I'm glad that you came over to this channel to continue making these videos.
The last scene before the credits where they're crying and throwing things at Bigfoot while releasing him in the woods was a reference to the movie "Harry and the Hendersons"
11:16 this is definitely a Community reference. In the episode Pillows and Blankets from season 3, Pierce wears a similar suit and becomes the ultimate weapon in the battle between Blanketsburg and Pillowtown.
I thought the yellow pokeball was a reference to the infamous GS Ball.
Great summary! The cage fight at the end also reminded me of the cage fights in Shang-Chi.
The reason for Rick capturing Bigfoot was on point
Wait what. there was a remake of Flatliners?
SO glad I had no idea it existed, let the snark commence!
Thanks for pointing out. I forgot about that picture.
Knowing Dan Harmon's Tony Stark obsession, I half expected Rick to pop out, after stealing the armor making equipment, dressed up in a full on Viking Iron Man suit.
This episode going into the rewatch list fs last week was the only miss this season for me didn’t think they’d pull it off very glad they did.
8:51 this is so sick to see as a destiny fan
I love episodes like this when they do mythologies, conspiracies, religion, spiritualily and science all in one⚡️
Or maybe they know something you don't
Ever noticed the theme always repeats across all stories...
@Uncanny-yh8eh factss i see clearlyyyy too🗣💯 this the main reason i watch tv and movies now and days to decode the message
this was sooo goood episode after a long time
12:11 the rocket launcher here is a reference to the Gjallarhorn from Destiny 2, with it being named after an item in norse mythology, and functionally behaving the same way with the whole cluster rocket 'wolfpack rounds' mechanic.
I did love the callback to that alien predicting Rick's death, Bigfoot killing Morty was a little unexpected to me as I didn't think they'd both die and have clones willing to dive into, the bodies still being in the room after the Pope kills them over and over was a good touch, and Rick towards the end just having the missiles constantly come down on the vikings as soon as they come back made me laugh 😂 I enjoyed this episode
i love this episode so much
The pillow suits could be a community paintball reference
I think the taping pillows to the body can be a refrence to many intances on tv, but the one that comes to mind is Community when Pierce enters the pillow fight
Female presenting Eliot Page is a respectful way to say it. I appreciated that
Great references a few more i noticed were Pheonix protocal is also an armor piece in D2. The fan made Real engine, short version Rick uses a Poke-ball to catch a version of Marvel's Rocket. Bigfoot is given a crossbow wrist band like a weapon from Assasins Creed that also has a Valhalla connection. Morty's blue face paint is reminiscent of Cratos/G.O.W's Boy whilst fake Odin Rick sports some Tony Stark welding goggles on top of his head.
I thought the cage looked more like the one from Shang Chi when Wong and Abomination fought
I’ve been able to remain unspoiled about Rocket until this very moment 🤣
When Morty shot the rocket launcher I immediately thought of the scene from Desperado when Quino brings a rocket launcher guitar case. He makes the same stance when shooting his rocket. That movie also featured a minigun guitar case as well which Morty also uses.
Also at the beginning of the story rick says that bigfoot is a B story and him going to the afterlife is the A story.
Which is how the episode plays out
this episode was pretty funny loved the depiction of valhalla lol
The pose morty makes when firing the gjallarhorn is a reference to a movie as well. I am struggling to remember whch but Aeon Flux comes to mind for some reason.
5:45 immediately stuck out to me as the shiny form of Deoxys
This was my favorite episode in a long time. Fkn hilarious
I’m just going to say it. This show will go in the halls of The Simpsons and SouthPark Lore
also when Morty fires the Gallahorn his stance is like the rocket launcher guitar case guy's in Desperado
this episode just hyped me up more for god of war ragnarok valhalla dlc tomorrow
You missed out the part one of the guards dying audio was a warcraft 3 peasant dying sound when they siege the pope's citadel. The scene where summer's clone with bigfoots conciousness in the background.
0:35 when you need more words on the essay
Love that Rick faced off w big foot in the avengers hulk cage
The bigfoot goodbye is from Harry and the Hendersons
The end credits scene remjnded me of the Shang Chi cage fight, esp when Rick portals out like Wong.
I would argue that the yellow ball could also call back to the GS Ball, which WOULD have been used to contain the mythical pokemon Celebi, but the storyline in the show was scrapped for a movie about Celebi instead, and in Crystal version you could get a GS Ball that would summon Celebi. Bigfoot being a mythical creature would work with a pokeball specifically tied to a mythical pokemon, plus the gold/yellow of the ball relates it more to the golds and yellows used by the Church and the Vatican. The only other ball really related to mythical pokemon is the Cherish Ball but considering its solid red that probably wouldn't fit too well with the theme.
The post credits reminded me more of the fight club from Shang-Chi than the Pokémon arena from Detective Pikachu, but I can see the connection 😂
Just finished the episode a minute ago.
How was it was it good ?
@@scarecrow730 yeah it was a good one
at 11:20 it is a refrence to community (created by dan harmon) s3e14 pillows and blankets episode where pierce becomes the part man, part pillow juggernaut
Isnt Rick shouting “POPE!” a reference to the god of war games where kratos shouts “ZEUS” ?
11:15 is a reference to the Community pillowfort fight suit that Pierce makes
Did I not see Bigfoot using a fallout pipboy? And when Morty uses the rocket launcher it is the same style as One of the Brothers in "Desparado".
“Poooooooope!!!”
My new battle cry
2:01 Diane? If so, I love that idea and it tells me over everything and every factor in Rick's life, the ONE thing that trumps allll that godly ego is his LOVE for her
pillow armor could be a reference to community aswell
The pillow taping i thought was a reference to community pillows and blankets
The move that Morty uses with the RPG, is a reference from Desperado...the mariachi with the bazooka guitar.
When foreshadowing in rick and morty pays off
I'm sure a lot of people have come here to correct this in the comments, but there is actually a comic where Odin marries aunt May and becomes Peter Parker's uncle, I think this is what Rick is referring to which goes back to his knowledge of every universe
8:53 this is a Desperados reference. The stance comes from the guy who shoots rockets out of his guitar case.
Plus Palpatine vibes with the tubes connected to the Pope's back.
the crossbow on the arm is an assassin creed reference and the pillows with ducktape is from the pillow fight episode of community
at 11:25, the "Swamp Fish Monster" is actually, "The Creature From The Black Lagoon". Otherwise, LOVED the episode, thanks
I actually lol'd a few times on this episode. One of the best of the last few seasons.
The pokeball also kinda looks like the GS ball, without the engraving.
Bro called a exosuit "Mobile suit gundam" and creature from the black lagoon "Swarm fish monster" lol
One more episode next week can’t wait how they’re gonna end it
Also the idea of rick having a pokeball was a reference to the rick and morty youtube parody where rick chases after rocket raccoon and captures him in a pokeball.
Popey-ball. I like that name, sounds catchy.
5:03 I think we crossed that bridge with Morty during the death Crystal episode. Well… the purge planet if we’re being honest.
Am I the only one who noticed Morty shooting the rocket launcher like Quino from Desperado?
Interesting how that poke ball works. Is that green symbol of Ricks portal
The morty pose when he´s firing his weapon is from the movie Desperado
This episode was hilarious
The second half of the season is really good
Theres a comic where Oden married aunt may thats where the spiderman joke came from
The channel "Heavy Spoilers" said in their video, that the "Spider-Mans uncle" line was a reference to an alternate comic book universe, where Odin and aunt May married.
Can’t stop thinking about the line: “Bigfoot, you were God’s greatest assassin”
as a bonus easter egg, the agents who took bigfoot have yellow illuminati symbols on their collars
I knew she would be apart of this!!!!
Exil Morty will show up with her!!!!
I feel like no one caught the Shrek reference when he transformed from an ogre to a handsome man
Was I the only one who thought there would be a reference to Hephaestus when Rick took over the forgery type building
I noticed that when the predator is referenced they say “so guns really are they’re currency” which i confirming a question someone said aloud in the poopybutthple episode
I don't think a lot of the information this guy is saying about how Marvel handle norse afterlife is true.
Norse mythology has been around way longer than Marvel. Norse people go to Valhalla when they die. Even Skyrim uses this concept with the Stormcloaks.
The Eternals are "immortal" because they have a machine to bring them back to life, not because they believe in the Celestials.
Damn i just got a casual Guardians 3 and Thor 3 spoiler
I know he explained that his "atheistic mind" stops him from going to heaven when he dies - but he's been phoenix protocolled so much why would he think he needed to get the data from killing Jerry? It was only obvious to Rick why Jerry goes and not him AFTER the tests so he'd have no clue prior
I must say its funny to see this much Marvel references in Rick and Morty when for while Marvel also have been taking notes from Rick and Morty as well
In my opinion, the pokeBall looks like the GS ball from the anime.
Deep Cut , but also it totally is :P
a classic R&M episode with no plot but only fun with a whole lot of pop-references & puns!
Still waiting for them to make "puns" about prophet Muhammad.
Or trans activists.
He didn't confuse Odin and Uncle Ben, it's an obscure reference. Odin was his Uncle legit. At some point. 😂
I believe this was the second time that poke balls were brought to the series.
you forgot Bill Cipher badges on pope's secret agents from Gravity Falls
now marvel needs to do a what if where uncle Ben is Odin living undercover and entrusts mjolnir to Peter
MT does an amazing job with all his analysis and I see why he’s in heavy spoilers buuuuut I think he should maybe do some more reading outside of the MCU cuz I doubt marvel had such a heavy influence on this episode as he inferred.
