Tornado Warning + Severe Weather in an RV

  • We were woken up by a severe thunderstorm and tornado warning while parked at a casino in Florida. Had to quickly get ready to leave the RV and find shelter if a tornado touched down. We made it through the storm unharmed, but a tornado did touch down about 30 miles away. This experience stressed the importance of being prepared for any type of situation.

If you hadn’t grew up in a trailer park, then you should have. I still have trouble sleeping (especially working 3rd shift) if I can’t have thunderstorm on tin roof videos playing. I went from diapers to high school in mobile homes and hard rain & thunder on a metal roof is what I grew up listening to.

Hello, I wanted to give RVers a better alternative. Tornadoes don't always stay in their predicted paths and can change at anytime. People like me who live in tornado prone areas have another option. Public shelters!! Public shelters are popular with people who don't have a safe place at home. Find out the county you are in and do an Internet search for public shelters in that county. They open up normally when a tornado watch is issued. A tornado watch happens before a tornado warning. A tornado watch means that tornadoes are possibility in the area. A tornado warning is when a tornado has been spotted either by radar, by law enforcement, by trained spotters, and/or by the public and it is on the ground. You want to already be in a shelter when that warning is issued. It is extremely dangerous to be in an RV, any type of vehicle, a mobile home, and/or a structure with a wide span roof such as a gymnasium. Bridge overpasses are dangerous also. Don't try to outrun a tornado. Unless you are a trained spotter, you don't know which was it is going and under what conditions it will change it's direction. Even trained tornado spotters have been killed when out in the field chasing tornadoes. Cities which have had tornado touchdowns are more apt to have a public shelter. The county list for public shelters will give you information such as are pets allowed, is it handicapped accessible, is it FEMA compliant and other pertinent information. If you are in a site built home, go to the lowest floor away from outside walls, away from windows. Wear hard soled shoes (if your area is hit by a tornado and you walk in a tornado debris area, it can cut up your shoes), a helmet (most deaths are caused by flying objects which hit people in the head) and have a whistle and/or an air horn. First responders are trained to listen for air horns and whistles.

This is something I do think about. I wonder if it would have been alright, in the eyes of the casino, if you had moved the RV closer to the building during the storm, and had taken refuge inside until it was over, then moved back to where you originally were? Or you could at least move closer, so you wouldn't have so far to run, yet stay inside until it got much worse?
