- It is one of the memories that some wish they had never experienced. It killed more than 230,000 people, including 95 French people, destroyed the coasts of 13 countries and left thousands destitute. Fifteen years have passed and yet no one has forgotten the 2004 tsunami on the coasts of the Indian Ocean. December 26, 2004, 9:30 a.m. Hundreds of tourists lounge by the swimming pools of luxury hotels in Thailand. Some are having breakfast, others are finishing getting ready before going on an excursion. They are far from imagining that in a few minutes, nothing will remain of these heavenly places. Deep in the ocean, a cataclysm is brewing.
1000 kilometers away, in Indonesia, an earthquake of unprecedented intensity has just triggered a devastating tsunami. The earthquake is so strong, 9.3 on the Richter scale, that the earth rises, releasing a wave of incredible violence, exceeding 30 meters in height in certain places. This is the start of 6 hours of chaos. Hour by hour, minute by minute, from Indonesia to Thailand, via Sri Lanka, we will retrace the path of this tsunami. To understand this extraordinary phenomenon, 3D images will decipher the progress of the monster. Those who experienced the wave up close will tell us their story. We will penetrate the intimacy of their vacation and dive back into this cataclysm with them thanks to amateur films filmed 15 years ago.
This grumbling in the abysses of the Indian Ocean has come to remind us of the force of nature. It changed the lives of hundreds of French people who came to share family vacations or enjoy their honeymoon. Fifteen years later, what has become of the tsunami survivors? Charlotte, Philippe, Jean-Louis, Robin, Anne, David, Fabien, Guillaume, Yannick and Géraldine will tell us about their fears, their suffering, but also the tremendous survival instinct that allowed them to come out alive. At the heart of the tsunami, a journey into the intimacy of the survivors.

About 10-12 years ago I watched a video about a British girl who was on school break and spending it with her family on the beach. Suddenly she saw the ocean recede. She starting screaming to her family and everyone around them to get to higher ground, to run up into the mountains. She told her family that she had studied tsunamis in school just before the school break. She was just a little girl but she saved herself, her family and a lot of others, too!
Was this a movie? What’s the name of it? I’d like to see it.
Jesus, Almighty God 🙏 loves ❤ you more than you could possibly comprehend!
He died for your sins, my sins and the sins of the world.
Jesus stands with His arms opened wide, hoping and willing to heal, forgive, cleanse, strengthen and purify us. He is waiting to receive you with all love! He deeply desires a personal relationship with each and every one of us!
RELATIONSHIP NOT RELIGION!
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you, there is no repentance in the grave: There is no conversion after the last breath is drawn.
Now is the time to believe in Christ and to lay hold of eternal life (J C Ryle).
God has revealed Himself to us in the glory of creation, in the perfection of the written word and in personal experience of all who seek Him.
Prayer 🙏 is giving our attention to God in a two-way Spiritual relationship where we talk to God and also listen to Him, you can pray 🙏 to God, through Jesus in the privacy of your own home (pray from your heart).
God speaks to your heart because He loves you and wants to interact with you.
So often we don't wait for God to speak after we've finished laying down our requests. Sadly, we don't watch for God to act in our lives.
Did you know that God speaks to us through the Bible?
The Holy scriptures Old and New Testaments, are the written Word of God, given by divine inspiration through holy men of God who spoke and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
The gift of the Holy Spirit is one of God's greatest gifts to us. Through the Holy Spirit we may know that God lives and that Jesus is the Christ!
Scripture is always the voice of God in the general sense that God inspired the words of Scripture (2 Tim 3:16).
God can also speak specifically to us through the Bible, by drawing a particular passage to our attention because the Word of God is living and active (Heb 4:12).
We can say that it is God's primary way of speaking to us. Any other communication must be based and tested by what is taught in Scripture.
The Holy Bible is God's guide for us, so we can reach Him, the only true living God and hear back from Him!
Jesus is returning in the not so distant future!

@@cryscris It was not a movie. After so long I can't totally remember but I think it was a show like 60 minutes or Dateline. The girl was interviewed on the show. It was the big tsunami in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, etc. A little research on Google will probably find it. So sorry I can't remember more.
Think I heard about her. 👏👏 Tsunamis are so rare, I’d have no clue, even though I was a Geology major. Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii has been hit and they now have a warning system. I think we went to a memorial site for those who have perished from prior Tsunami(s). Hope warning system works well. I recall once everyone fled to higher ground and all that came was a few feet, if even that. Does anyone recall this. Some relatives were there, but then nothing happened. It’s hard to predict nature!

Watching this now in 2024, it brought back tears to me and the realization that the house we were trying to sell in the UK, having fallen through, potentially saved our lives! Had we sold by mid December, we were headed to Phuket for our holiday, then a new life in Thailand! There were 16 in the chain of house sales and since it broke, we could not go to Thailand, how fortunate for us! It was nearly a year later we finally sold and now live here in the North East of Thailand! Since this time, I have heard from many people and their experiences and how chance decisions have saved their lives too! I hope the pain for all survivors is now at a level where you can cope, it was a very sad experience for all who have been emotionally affected in this catastrophe of near 20 years ago! Wishing all who read this peace, love and rest!

I'm from South Africa. My husband and I were on our honeymoon on Koh PhiPhi, and left the island on December 24th to go to Koh Samui. Initially, we had booked to visit Koh Samui first and spend 4 days from Christmas Eve on Koh Phi Phi which would have meant we'd have been there when the tsunami hit. Changing our plans saved our lives.

This is indeed a fantastic documentary; very well narrated with sensitivity and respect but still gives you a very clear understanding of the magnitude of the disaster and it’s really touches the viewer very deeply! Found myself having to stop it a few times… I remember the news when this happened but watching this production made me grasp the devastation of the disaster 😢
Those elephants that were trumpeting and crying were so upset even though they didn't know what was happening is absolutely amazing!! Animals have amazing instincts! 👏 ❤
Supposedly saved a child's life that was riding on one of the elephants.
> @NursePamS Seems to me the elephants DID know what was happening - the extraordinary reaction they had demonstrated that clearly! I learned when I was a kid that animals have instincts that are superior to those of a human, and we are wise to pay attention to them and the sounds going on around us. I find it amazing that a human could reach adulthood before they realize that.
@@ofthedifferenceNo, they did not know a tsunami was about to hit, they just knew something terrible was about to happen.....!! Elephants can feel the vibrations and infrasounds that humans can't hear, caused by earthquakes....!! Since a tsunami was on it's way then those vibrations would have been something so strong and fierce, which those elephant's had probably never felt them so strongly is the reason they were terrified and justifiably so.....!! What's pathetic is how that man talked about the elephants saving his life that day and yet right there behind and beside him are elephant's, just standing there chained up exactly like they were the day the tsunami hit, the day they saved his life.....!! If he was truly grateful then he would have opened a sanctuary for elephant's instead of trying to profit from them after what he experienced.....!!
That's where you're wrong saying they don't know what's going to happen no they do know they know far away better than what we do you know when they say listen to your gut instinct and trust it the animals are very tune to Nature so anything that's off they're going to sense it they're going to know what to do because they they know already it's in their built into their DNA how to handle the situations so when they know the Calm before the storm and they're trying to get away and you're being a jerk about it as these elephant tourists abusers that abused the elephants are they don't care about the offense they want them to keep them quiet keep them in check so the fact that they are so full of crap that they don't even pay attention to these outfits are breaking their change for a reason they're running away for a reason because these animals know to get to Higher Ground these animals automatically know and they're good instinct to get to Higher Ground well as humans are like well let's just take pictures let's try to get these animals settled and calm down no do not calm them down get the hell out of there and listen to the animals but that's the problem with people they say animals don't know what's about to happen no they do we just had a tornado hit my neighborhood area and it's interesting because every one of my neighbor's pets did the same thing the Quan before the storm we had no knowledge that there was going to be a tornado hitting our neighborhood area we had no Sirens going off we were told there's only going to be a civil weather storm that was it but our animals were misbehaving we didn't tell him to settle down we didn't try to get them under control we found what they wanted to do they wanted to go to the basement and by the moment we all got down to our basements in my neighborhood that tornado hit so they knew what was about to happen above us they knew and they reacted and they hope to God that we were going to follow them because they're God's given angels to us on this planet the animals are and we were safe thanks to them unfortunately those who did not trust the Instinct of their animals and just stayed up there because there's no fires going off guess what they die
The humans should have realized that something wrong was happening.

I remember this tragity very well. The world chipped in to help those affected. A horrific show of natures power and how powerless mankind is during its unfolding. Our area near the coast made a concerted effort to prepare for a like disaster. We live in the area known as the Ring of Fire and it could happen here. Mother Earth is constantly changing.

Yes but it's heartbreaking the way they have them chained up.. actually sickening!!
The fact that the elephants could not see the ocean and freaked out to the point of tears and breaking chains out of sheer instinct of looming danger is proof we are all born from mother Earth and I strongly believe we should protect our planet. We will forever be at her mercy.
If elephants cry in this, Idk if I can watch. That is so sad.

Thank you for this documentary. RIP who lost lifes 😢😢😢
Wow - I can't wait to watch this. I was on Koh Phi Phi six months after this happened. It was still in a state of disarray. I had heard about a grass roots group of tourists who had started helping the locals to rebuild as much as they could on the island. The second day I was there working with them, the CBC (Canada Broadcasting Company) showed up AND there was still so much rubble in the ocean, our group found a grand piano (that is how much rubble was still in the ocean - a grand piano was still buried 6 months later). It was both beautiful and so eerie. I always wished I had stayed for longer to help - I fell in love with the locals. Their stories of survival and positivity in the face of such tragedy was awe-inspiring!
The part of the story about elephants breaking chains and running to the hills is so impressive. The guide said they saved his life. Yet, while he is talking about it, behind him, many of these animals still chained and slaved into tourists attractions. Soooo, sooo sad. Let innocent animals be!
Then they used the poor Elephants to move debris and recover bodies , they should get the Honorable Elephant Citation awards , they were smarter than the people who stood around gawking at the incoming wave 🌊
I thought the same thing.
The plight of the elephants are very distressing they are still using those poor animals.
I used to dislike Circuses because of how the Elephants and Big Cats were treated, right when the Circuses went to Vegas I saw a PT Barnum's and Bailey's Train go by , the freight doors were open , with hardly any straw on the deck the poor dehydrated , dejected Dumbo's at the door in the Rain , as if they were saying goodbye to Wilmington CA for the last time , I cried my heart out , all these beautiful ones given by the Gods to be our Companions , will soon be extinct, I hope my stay on this Planet will be over.
It's tourist fault. If we don't hire them, there will be no more animal abuse. Such a wonderful animal in horrible chains, it broke my heart. Not the rich tourists
Neka počivaju u božijem miru i blagoslovu . Respekt !❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Kudos to the people who stayed behind to help. Sadly, tourists lost family & friends. The local people lost not only their families & friends, but also their entire homes, livelihoods, businesses, communities, everything. Bravo to those tourists who showed sensitivity & concern for the local population.👏🏻
i'm sure ALL the tourists felt sensitivity and concern for the local population.. Not to take anything away from those who were left healthy and strong -- like surfers and paramedics -- and were able to get away from their everyday lives to stay and help. Which is not to say the children and the elderly and the injured and the parents and the grieving tourists with responsibilities back home did not feel sensitivity and concern for the locals. In a situation like that if you cannot contribute way way more than you are sucking out of a broken system it's better to get out of the way and certainly every embassy told every one of their citizens to do just that. Bravo too to those who had to leave without their children or their legs or their sanity in tact!
I was pregnant with my son when this happened. My first , I watched this on TV and has nightmares for weeks!! Just hearing about dead bodies and corpses . People have to work together. I remember it well 20 years ago because i stayed at that time in the hospital and almost everyone talked about it,that tsunami 😮
Our oldest friends survived, just. One turned 91 two weeks ago and his wife turns 90 in 10 day time. They still talk about the two young Americans who physically ripped up bolted down benches to make a bridge for the people stranded on the rooftop of the low building that they had run to. They had to crawl along those benches to get access to a balcony of the taller building next door. They were on the beachfront and locals suddenly started calling out to everyone to run to safety. They were injured getting to the first building and making their way to the rooftop as water engulfed them. They said that the fear in the hectic moments reaching safety was bad but watching the ongoing devastation and aftermath would haunt them forever.
How long did it take them to get home?
@@arribaficationwineho32 I am not sure as to the exact amount of time, as my husband and I were visiting his family in the UK. They decided to accompany their son and his teenage children to Thailand at the last minute and had to secure accommodation in a different hotel to their son and his family. They were just enjoying a stroll along the beach and whilst the rest of the family were doing their own thing at the time of the tsunami, but after the death and chaos, managed to reunite up in the hills and were evacuated to Singapore where they stayed in a hotel until getting flights back to Australia. My friend suffered a lot of cuts and abrasions to her legs from debris in the water but counted themselves lucky to have survived. Her husband had travelled overseas for business but it was her first ever international holiday and her last one. They have been everything to each other for 70 years and we celebrated her 90th birthday a couple of weeks ago with 5 generation (first great great grand baby) in attendance.

I'm in southern India which was affected very badly. I can see the beach from my apartment and that morning I was in my bedroom sleeping. That's when my dad came and yelled us to wakeup... I checked out of the window & it was like a medium sized waves chasing people who running towards our apartments. My dad pushed us to go to the top floor terrace and thats when I saw the complete view. The sea water has flooded everywhere and was like in an Island & the water level kept raising.. After sometime the waters receded back to sea as if there was a pipe used to drain the water & there came another wave after 10mins and the sea was looking dark brown in color already. Always etched in mind
Poor elephants, so inteligents
Fuerza a los vivos y paz a los muertos. Animo y fuerza
I too was thinking about the residents and how their entire lives changed in an instant. Unthinkable horror 😢
Paroles en or
oui !

Thank you for immortalising this tragedy. May the departed rest in peace.
I'm so sorry for those lost. Such courage for the survivors.
This whole disaster is hard to wrap your head around, but to hear that 2 survivors die from snake bites in the night is just maddening. They were so close to holding onto the rest of their lives. Mother nature is a beautiful beast.

We need to understand and love each other and treasure our loved ones. Life can change in just a few minutes.
This documentary made me cry for those who lost their lives and those suffering.
Daily stuff happens to us and we feel like crumbling down...this was terrible.
blessings to all of those who stayed and helped the survivors to go on with their lives❤
The worst of times can bring out the best in people. ❤️
The most horrific natural disaster in my lifetime. I remember the day this happened. It was hell on earth for those people. My heart still breaks for them today. 💔😩💔
I had no idea so many people died
J'essaie de me pardonner, je me pardonne.

Merci.
This is the best coverage ive seen because it not only reveals the destruction and deaths, it really tugged at my heart to see the caring of the survivors who fell into leadership roles to bring about first aid, food, water, and bringing unity out of devastation and chaos. Great coverage and filming. Thank you
La nature est TOUJOURS gagnante
Great show. So informative. So so sad for tbe 230,000 lives lost. RIP 😢
What amazing people the volunteers were to stay on and help! Need more people like them in the world, absolute Hero's!🌎 ❤️

Que bueno tú trabajo.Que horror lo que pasó!!😢
I can't even imagine. That lady who made a comment about the little boy should not blame herself. No one can say what they would or could do in her situation. It was a bad day for all who was there who saw things no one should ever see. My heart goes out to all who was affected by this
I agree with you. I pray that she seeks counseling with someone trained to counsel trauma survivors. The lady needs to know that her mind and body were in a state of shock...she had been fighting for her life! She probably had a literal split second to react to seeing the child and it was simply not enough time for her brain to process what she was seeing and then, he was gone! It is not her fault.
I agree, but she will always blame herself even though she is not to blame. Like she said until her last breath, that boy's image will remain in her mind. My heart hurts for her. It is not her fault.
but you HAVE to blame yourself when a child asks for help because his life's in danger, and you don't lift a finger, out of fear, even though yer sitting pretty and in a POSITION to help which is why the baby is reaching for ya.
She's burning in hell, right now, so it would've been worth the effort.. to the little boy and for her soul. She now carries a Karmic Debt that she's going to have to pay, that's her life's journey, now.
@@keetahbroughI am with you on this.Shock, trauma, sure I agree and also that ' we will not know what we will do until we are in that situation'.Fact is ,she was only lookin out for herself and her bf at that moment.Did she make any attempt at all to save the child? No,she did not even extend her hand. Her feelings of guilt are absolutely justified, also meaning she has a conscience afterall.Too late madam, you dint even try.Had you tried and failed, that would have been a different story.
She did not kill the child but she stood by and did nothing.

a beautifully constructed documentary, with compassion and integrity.
This is an AI generated “documentary”. And a lazily constructed one at that.
@@PneumaNoose Why knock it like that? It took a lot of effort to detail these stories.
No. This is more AI generated shlock
@@betsydettloff6674 because it’s compiled from other people’s hard work (not this channel’s)

😊
This is the most touching documentary I have seen of this horrible disaster. A wonderful tribute.
Who cares. A lot were rich tourists but shame about the young crumpet women. But mostly sad for the locals struggling to live.
