    The 985 is pretty easy to manage, settings wise. With a Hartzell heavy prop: Takeoff- 36"/2300 Come back to 30"-2000 as soon as you're positive rate and cleaning up. Can maintain that for climb. Cruise power starts at 28"-1900 and can vary all over between 19"- 1750.
    Anything like this Staggerwing, swinging a big Hamilton Standard prop, they tend to like to turn slower. Cruise an inch lower, and listen for RPM smoothness. They're phenomenal engines, and very easy to manage, once you learn to take care of them.
    I love your content lately! It's been a treat. Your videos are a nice reminder for me to update my sim, and check out new aircraft releases. Keep them coming please!

      Thanks very much for the info Dan, very much appreciated! That’s exactly the kind of thing I would have loved to have known from Carenado haha. I’m sure flying this sort of machinery in the real world is an absolute joy!
      Really happy to hear you’re enjoying the content! MSFS certainly still has its issues, but its slowwwly getting there I think. Certainly no harm in updating it and checking things out anyway (well, could be harmful to the bank balance I suppose ha).
      Thanks very much and all the best! : )

    The Staggerwing brings back fond memories. When I graduated from high-school (1970) I immediately got a dream job at our new airport as a line-boy. We had one large community hangar and not long after the airport opened, a local jeweler decided to store his red Staggerwing in our hangar. He did not fly it much so, consequently, it ended up being stored in the back corner of the hangar. My fellow line-boy, Skip, and I used to dread when the owners received a call that "Henry Line wants his plane out". That meant hand-pulling out all the other planes in the hangar and then, with the greatest of efforts, moving the "beast" (which never seemed to have enough air in the tires) out to the ramp so Henry could make a brief flight up to Carlisle (PA) to buzz the town and then return. Henry did give Skip and I a ride in the Staggerwing one time and I still recall how loud it was in the cockpit when he went full-throttle. I never experienced anything like it before. Wonderful days back then. BTW - there was always a drip pan kept under the engine as it dripped oil more than I perspired on a humad day.

      A lovely story Dennis, thanks very much for sharing!
      I sometimes wonder if I chose the wrong career; I always wanted to fly, but it must be much nicer cruising around in your own Staggerwing, rather than carrying out a night turn-around ha! I wonder how easy it is to retrain as a jeweller. . .
      I spent some time as a hangar skivvy myself, so I can definitely empathise. I’d say all of your efforts were probably justly rewarded, if you got a ride in the thing though - wonderful!
      Thanks again and all the best : )

      I’m no Steven Spielberg haha, but I like to try and create a bit of a vibe where I can. The more “cinematic” side of the channel is something I enjoy and I feel the mix between that and the realistic operations, gives the channel its own little “niche” (usually it’s one or the other).
      My pleasure as always! Thanks again for watching : )

    Yet another superb video. The one thing I seem to remember about the Staggerwing were those coiled sprung undercarriage legs. I had a number of flights in a certain British registered one in the 1990s and when operating on grass it seemed to bounce all over the place when landing back on. My friend, always knew when we were about to touch down as both of my legs went to the right, as if I was a downhill skier! Really enjoyed flying in here, and this video has brought back a lot of good memories. Thank you.

      Ok, well I’ll give Careando the benefit of the doubt on the Staggerwing being a bit bouncy then haha. Maybe I’ll have to try employing the downhill skiing technique for my next landing! : P

    Really nice video, particularly the intro and music (reminded me of Barry Gray). I had only just finished my first couple of flights in this in VR when I saw you already had your review up. One thing I did notice on my first attempts is the issue of the flight crashing due to stress if you open a window in flight or on takeoff. I had a lot of fun in P3D with this model and will be enjoying it even more in this sim. Great review.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks as always Terry!
      I just admit, I’m not familiar with Barry Gray (I did google, but that seems to bring up references to the Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlett composer and whilst they’re of course both excellent shows, I’m not quite sure what they have in common with my intro haha?).
      I generally have aircraft stress turned off in MSFS, for exactly this reason. It’s rare that I’ll come close to overdressing an airframe, whereas I often like to cruise around with the window open etc : )
      I didn’t have this one myself in P3D, but I can definitely see myself enjoying it quite a bit in MSFS!
      Thanks as always for watching. Happy flying!

    Excellent video once again, mate.
    I picked this up myself yesterday. I am impressed with it, it's got that usual Carenado polish visually, and the controls feel weighty and solid, to me overall. I think this is one of the better Asobo aircraft offerings, I personally enjoy flying the Aviat Husky too but this is better, in my opinion. Well worth the £12.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před 2 lety +3

      Haha, well I thoroughly agree; it’s one of the better Asobo offerings, but sadly that’s probably because Asobo had little-to-nothing to do with it XD

      Hehe, it’s always the same conundrum isn’t it; too many addons and not enough money XD
      The Staggerwing definitely has its charm and it’s speed makes appealing (to me at least) for some longer cross country legs. Obviously it’s a pretty fair price as well. Still, no need to rush into these things. Sit on it for a while and see if it still takes your fancy in a week or so perhaps ; )

      I did remember curate’s egg this time! (although I still googled it again, just to make sure my memory was serving me correctly ha). I think that’s a fair assessment, although I do think it’s a decent offering for the price (if they could just brush up the takeoff / landing characteristics, I think it’s a pretty nice aircraft to fly overall).

Actually quite a few close family members of both his and the Queen died in air crashes though, so perhaps one of the reasons why people weren’t so keen on him doing it.

I forgot to switch tanks and didn't realise until the engine cut out with a fuel warning light lol. Nice one to hand fly and I like flying this low above the towns and roads especially in the alps quite relaxing. The only thing I struggle with is landing I do tend to bounce. @@IntotheBlueSimulations Ok I have a question, which wasn't obvious from the video, is the tail wheel lock the push pull knob to the left of the parking brake? only in my plane that knob is labelled tail hook extend/retract. the issue I have is that as soon as I power up on the runway I get a violent shimmy at very low speed, along with loud rumbling sound effect, which translates to a violent left or right bank as soon as I take off...very confused!

      I think the Staggerwing is nice to fly overall and the lack of autopilot isn’t really an issue, given it’s stability. I liked it, I just found takeoff / landing to be a little bit of a chore as opposed to a pleasure. It wouldn’t need much polishing up, to make it excellent value for money though!

      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes Russell, indeed it is. That’s strange; do you mean the tooltip has it labelled as the tail hook, or the cockpit labelling itself? On my aircraft the cockpit labelling is “Tailwheel Lock”.
      I’m not really sure what could be accounting for that behaviour - it almost sounds like maybe the tailwheel is locking at an angle of something? Is that happening with one particular livery, or have you tried others (not that it should make a difference I suppose)?
      I certainly haven’t experienced the behaviour you’ve described with the aircraft. . . Hopefully we can figure it out.

    We used to have one of those that flew out of 52F over the hill from us. Oooo, it sounded nice and was beautiful. The old guy dug a ditch with it so it was salvaged by someone and I've heard has a new home now.
    Added in Edit: I held very few hours over 35 years ago but every single engine I was in P factored to the left requiring right pedal. This sim looks beautiful but from what I've learned about the limited physics and native aircraft support (I.E. helicopters without an add on), seems like FSX was a better all around simulator for flying realism, especially with the A2A physics package for aircraft.

      I’ll bet it sounded wonderful Kyle! A shame that the owner took up ploughing with it haha (I do hope he was ok!), but I’m glad to hear she got fixed up and is back in the air.
      Without a doubt, flight modelling is not a strength of MSFS at the moment. That being said, I don’t think it’s as bad as some make out. It does do some things well and I think a lot of the issues now come down to how much work the devs actually put into their aircraft (whereas initially I think the sim / SDK was a genuine cause of many issues). The Kodiak for example is very nice to fly - so it can be done! I’m not too surprised that Careando didn’t put in the hard yards with the flight model, but to be fair their Waco had big issues when it released and they’ve fixed that up now, so hopefully they will do the same with the Staggerwing. Still, I think we’re all waiting on A2A haha!

    Such a great review again, as always. Since MSFS Carenado improved a lot in their Flightmodels, cockpit lights and updates, compared to what they did in P3D. i wanted to purchase this one, but saw a few things in your review that will keep me away from it being the flightmodeling and the strut in front of our face. In the real a/c we can easy look around but not here. I wonder if the breakout to the right on your landing could have been prevented when you lined up better with the runway on that Xwind. Thanks for the reviw !

    • @Hartbreak1
      @Hartbreak1 Před 2 lety +2

      The issue with the strut is most probably because he’s using TrackIr, for the default camera angles it has some different positions that allow to see stuff obstructed by the strut. The only issue with the default camera angles is that not a single one is good for taxiing the plane.
      Regarding flight modeling for me the only real issue seems to be the landing. It does seem to be bumpy unless the plane is fully stalled on touch down, seen that also on a few other taildraggers. For me I didn’t have the aircraft veering to one side on touchdown like on this video, I wonder if that was a crosswind or something like that.
      For the takeoff “kick” on most aircraft I’ve learned to minimize it by just going 50% throttle first and the after the aircraft starts rolling advancing throttle to 100% at a moderate pace.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations

      Thanks very much Ben! Glad you enjoyed it.
      I agree. I’ve been saying for a while now that Carenado have really upped their game (so far) coming into MSFS. The products have generally been done to a higher quality *and* (more importantly) they’ve been pretty proactive with patches / fixes etc. Hopefully it continues!
      The strut probably is exacerbated by TrackIR and the viewpoint I chose. One can definitely move the camera to minimise the struts interference (a little). Apparently the FSX / P3D version (wisely) had an option to remove the strut, but not here it seems. I hope Carenado add in such an option at a later date. The flight modelling is so-so. It’s nice to fly, but I wasn’t massively impressed with how it handled on takeoff / landing. Carenado fixed up their Waco though, so helpfully they’ll do the same with the Staggerwing (and it isn’t completely awful at the end of the day).
      The crosswind might have come into play, but looking at the windsock I think it was only a few knots (always tricky to trust the windsocks in MSFS though). Others are saying that they haven’t experienced the swing, so maybe it was a crosswind issue. I wasn’t surprised to see the swing though, since it’s been a problem in the sim for a fair old while.
      For the price, it’s quite a nice pickup honestly and I suspect it will get some improvements (unless Carenado have literally handed it over to Asobo).
      I hope that clarifies things a little.
      Cheers and all the best! : )

      Hi Silvy,
      Well it would really depend on the aircraft of course (and I have no idea how the Staggerwing actually flies). I agree that one would expect most aircraft to fly smoothly unless disturbed, but I’d be surprised to see an aircraft to maintain a constant angle of bank (over a longer period of time), without any input from the pilot. Again though, it might be accurate behaviour from the Staggerwing for all I know haha.

    I've read in a couple places 80 mph is good on final at -500 ft/min, and land with a tad of power with a tail-low wheel landing. But you would have had a very long landing with all that extra speed! I have been flying it and with this flight model it eats a lot of runway floating right above the ground forever. The balance seems off on it too. Regardless of different weight configurations I've tried, the tail likes to drop dramatically on even the smoothest wheel landings. Several videos of the plane IRL with arguably rougher landings show the tail stays stable on touchdown. I've suspected for a while that Carenado aircraft in MSFS have balance issues.

      Yes, I think a “heavy” tail is a sim issue as much as anything. Most of the addon tail draggers I’ve tried in the sim, seem to either like being on their tail or flying and not much in between. Not exactly sure what might be the issue there. . .

      Hmm, interesting - someone else mentioned the same observation on another video. I suspect it might be to do with the flight recording tool I’m using. Overall it does a great job, but I think it throws a few animations etc out of whack. For example, if I load up a replay with the flight paused, the wheels will be spinning even when the aircraft is stationary.

    I'm relieved this was released without any major issues. I was quite a fan of the FSX version even with it being a Carenado (well Alabeo technically) and I've been waiting for them to release an MSFS version for a while. But after finding out it was gonna be a Micosoft published bird and after the disappointments with the two Living Legends I was a bit apprehensive and so I've been waiting for reviews and impressions. Looks like I'll be picking it up, especially at this price!
    Also I found a handbook for the C-34 which is the US military designation for the D17S. There might be some differences but from what I can gather they were basically just civilian planes pressed into military service so I dit should still be applicable. There's a section which covers engine settings for a bunch of different engines that this bird came with. The one simulated is the R-985-AN-1 I believe, well it was in the FSX Alabeo version and I'm assuming they kept the specs the same for MSFS.

      Bought it and flying it around, quite nice! Figured out the fuel tank selectors. Top selector three positions are MAIN drains from Center 1, LU drains from Left Main and you switch it to Lower Valve to stop draining from those two tanks and use one of the tanks on the lower selector instead. So with Lower Valve selected the lower selector has RU to drain from Right Main and LL and LR to drain from Left Aux and Right Aux tanks. So set what tank you want to use on the lower selector and then switch the top to Lower Valve to actually start using those tanks!

      It’s honestly now getting to the point with Carenado in MSFS, that I don’t go into the review with a preemptive wince on my face. Sure all of their products have still released with bugs, but none of them have been game-breaking and Carenado have been very proactive with patching them up (as proactive as the Marketplace seems to allow at any rate). So overall I had reasonable hopes for this one and the aircraft met them. At the price as well, it’s a very decent offering. Still hoping the ground handling gets tweaked though. . .

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations It generally helps that with their GA stuff they're mostly kind of simple so would take a bit of effort to screw up, although some do manage even that! That said I was reading a flight report by an owner of one of these fantastic machines in the modern day and he mentioned that the D17S required a fair bit of rudder use and how it doesn't really like to sit nice and level so you're constantly having to hold the yoke in place to keep it flying straight and level, so the flight model is probably a bit too simplified really. Still for a 12.50 or whatever quid plane you can't argue and she's still nice to fly around. Looks and sounds fantastic too!

Oh I also read that the central tank is kinda treated like a reserve (even though it holds a few more gallons than the other tanks) as it's the tank you're supposed to use for taking off and landing. So for best results I guess you gotta juggle the wing tanks in the cruise and then if you're like me; forget how long you've been running one tank down for and then wonder why your plane is starting to tilt to one side before realising your mistake. Happens more often than I'd like to admit, especially with the Piper Arrows.

      Sorry I can’t be of more help on that one. All the best! : )

    Is Avalon a photogrammetry city yet?

      I don’t believe so Khan. I was using a freeware scenery for Catalina Island in this vid (available from Flightsim.to) and I think it added in a couple of the major buildings in Avalon also (its a really nice scenery overall).
      Cheers and all the best! : )

      Orbx version of this island is great. Loads of detail and people and boats. We'll worth it. Much better than this free version

      Ok, well I’ll have to have a look then David. Free is free haha, but I do like the odd flight out to Catalina, so it might be nice to have a better scenery still.
      Cheers! : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations yes the free one is good. And generally I don't buy much scenery as I still have the whole world to explore :-) But I'm one of Big Radials test pilots, or crash test dummies as they say. And their next release is ideal to fly around here. Then Orbx did this new version. It's great!

      Haha, well I maaaay have been “inspired” by Big Radials actually. I saw their poster of the Goose / Avalon a few weeks ago and that popped into my head, when I was thinking where I could take the Staggering ; )
      I hope the Goose is coming along nicely! I hope you haven’t crashed too many in the process : P
      Cheers!

      There’s just the one door leading into the rear of the cabin (it would appear) Donald and yes it can be opened / closed : )

    Thanks for this review. Nice, pleasant performance. I got the Staggerwing yesterday from the MSFS marketplace. Unfortunately, this jewel is causing problems. During takeoff, it starts bumping on the runway at 15 knots. After takeoff the aileron becomes ineffective. I've never encountered thus problem with all my other planes. Uninstall and reinstall of aircraft no improvement. I'm flying on PC, Sim Update 8.
    Here is a capture.

      Hi Marco,
      Sorry for the slow reply. Are you still having issues? The first thing I would suggest is to check your sim's flight model settings. Make sure you have the flight model set to "Modern" and not "Legacy" - that's usually the culprit for these types of strange behaviors.
      If you don't have any joy with that, let me know and we'll see what we can figure out from there.
      Cheers and all the best! : )

      Hi Howard,
      Yep, as I mentioned during the video, the takeoff and landing characteristics need some work. I did indeed pay for the Staggerwing, primarily so that I could create this review and help people decide whether or not they want to purchase the addon - I take it in your case that would be a no then haha.
      All the best!

    Looks like a real beauty! Shame the flight model is not as pretty! The new prop physics don't appear to have been implemented? Caranedo will need to update it and issue a patch? Speaking of prop physics, have you tried the Bonanza development project from Flightsim.to? It uses the new prop physics and flies very nicely?

    • @mekowgli

      "Looks like a real beauty! Shame the flight model is not as pretty!" That's the definition of Carenado :) Not even going into system simulation depth.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před 2 lety

      Yes, I’m pretty sure the new prop physics haven’t been implemented here David. In fairness to Carenado, I guess they would have only had one day to do so haha.
      Unfortunately the new prop physics are going to be “optional” apparently - I wouldn’t be surprised if the likes of Carenado forgo them altogether. Let’s hope not.
      All the best!

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před 2 lety

      Haha, not entirely unfair.
      I do find that generally speaking their MSFS stuff has been of a higher quality and more consistent than some of their work in older sims though. They’ve also been pretty proactive with patches etc. For the price, I was expecting the final world in Staggerwing simulation ; )
      Cheers Lukasz!
