Just a reminder that these 1300 Baratheon men have been through absolute hell. Besieged Storm’s End, assaulted King’s Landing, destroyed the Wildlings and marched through hundreds of miles of snow and harsh conditions. And after all that, the loyal men of Dragonstone stood with their king til the end.
I just realized watching This scene again, when he draws his sword and hid stannermen draw swords with him, there are useless soulless sell swords near the back running away (on the overview) as the true stannermen follow their King to the end.
I love Stannis' subtle smile as he looks down to reach for his sword. It really speaks as to what kind of man he is. He's a soldier first. He was never meant to grow old in a castle and he knew it.
Wow, to see Stannis in the forefront of that battle, and to know he would not hide just gives me chills. Name one other leader who would do that. Not Tywin, not Renly, not Daenerys, not Cersei, not Roose...
Stannis is the definition of Leader. He leads from the front, by example. The rest on that list are Commanders, but not leaders. They only give orders that braver men then carry out. Stannis gives orders in battle, aye. But then he marches right forth with his men and carries them out too.
0:15 You know it is a well-trained and well-disciplined army led by an extraordinary commander when they managed to form up a solid front-line against a surprise cavalry attack in such a short time , all the while being exhausted from the march, the cold and the lack of nourishment. Respect~
Stannis was a moron for marching without a solid front line in the first place and for not scouting ahead to check if a fucking army was waiting to ambush him. He actually commited the same mistake on blackwater and well he never learned.
It is because the Stannis of the series got all the good things he had in the book, including his strategic capacity, for example, in the battle of the blackwater in the books Stannis did not command the fleet if not that he command of the land army that was in The southern bank of the Blackwater River waiting for the fleet, while the fleet was commanded by Imri Florent, Selyse Florent's brother, who, confident of a quick victory, would attack without exploring the Blackwater and with a closed position, in fact in later chapters Stannis will mentions to Davos that it was stupid on Imri's part to attack without exploring beforehand, continuing, Imri attacked the Lannister fleet in the Bay ignoring the fire signals coming from the shore by the army warning them of a giant chain that Tyrion command to build (unfortunately this is not shown in the series) which leads to the stannis fleet being trapped in the mouth of the river and being almost completely destroyed by Valyrian fire. After this with the few ships that remained and with a bridge of destroyed ships that formed in the giant chain, Stannis's army managed to cross the Blackwater River, but with many casualties and Stannis did not fight at the front as in the series if not that he was in the rear watching, at first stannis wanted to be in front with his soldiers but the lords of the lands of the storm warned him that it was an unnecessary risk and he stayed in the rear, after stannis lost his fleet , a large part of his army that was trying to cross the river black waters in flames and with his army divided on the two banks would arrive the Lannister and Tyrrel army attacking from the rear and massacring the Stannis army, and how did Stannis not see an army that around 60,000-80,000 soldiers? It turns out that all the explorers that Stannis sent through the royal forest (gigantic forest that is south of Kingslanding past the black water) would be killed by the clans of the mountains that Tyrion had encountered when he left Eyre, and that Tyrion sent to harass Stannis's army as they marched towards Kingslanding. For this reason Stannis did not find out that an army that doubled in number was approaching until it already had them in the chasm, and that they were also hidden at night, the smoke of the Valyrian fire, and the forest, and to finish off the army Stannis was crumbled, depleted and divided in two by the Aguasnegras river. So Stannis seeing that the only lines that tried to stop the enemy attack were broken, Stannis flees with what he can by getting on the Lysens pirate ships that Imry had left behind because he considered it dishonorable to use pirates in a battle . stannis retreats with some 2,500-3,000 soldiers out of the 35,000-40,000 who originally attacked Kingslandin. and of those 3000 survivors (almost all being cavalry troops since the cavalry would be the only thing that Stannis did not use in the black water) 2500 would go to the black castle to defeat the savages in what I consider one of the greatest asañas of the saga by ASoIaF. because the fact that an army of 2500 soldiers and a few hundred hermaons of the night manage to defeat a force of at least 100,000 people (I say at least because we are never told of how many savages there were, we are only confirmed that there are 30,000 warriors and it is not like the savages began to count how many they were) and also hundreds of giants and mammoths. A pity that Benioff and Weise did not recreate this battle as it should be only to take away achievements and glory from Stannis in the series, since for some reason the army of hundreds of thousands of savages disappears from one moment to another and only a few are shown wild here and there and no giant or mammoth. Finally in the books Stannis is not yet defeated by the Boltons and in fact the most probable thing is that he wins, but good to see that we have to wait for "Winds of Winter" By the way to write this I had to use the Google translator since I do not write or speak English, I am from South America. For which there are very likely a lot of spelling mistakes. My sincere apologies.
@@opoziter2467 Well you don't really know what will happen in the books. It is well known that Martin told D&D about some of the future events and this might be one of them. But it doesn't matter. Even if Stannis doesn't burn Shireen in the books I still think that this decision made by the showrunners is very good. It brings out the dilemma between personal happiness and the survival of the entire realm. Stannis loved Shireen, but also believed that only he could save Westeros and that only the royal blood could make him defeat the Boltons. This was a selfless act of personal sacrifice and it made me respect Stannis even more, although it was cruel, terrifying an ultimately it failed.
@@MrLambadus I simply can't see Stannis burning Shireen in the books. He's too noble for that, and kinslaying goes entirely against his code. However, Shireen is currently at Castle Black with Melisandre. Stannis is reported to be dead by Ramsey(?) in the Pink Letter (although Stannis is likely to triumph in the Battle of Ice against the Boltons, since he actually has a strategy unlike in the show). However, Castle Black doesn't know this, which might embolden Mels to burn Shireen on her own volition to gain some advantage against the Others

The fact that he was right in front of everyone and that he somehow survived that cavalry charge that was coming right at him and then the whole battle after that is insane. @Deepak Kool look D and D suck but this isn’t one of the reasons. They have restraints for stuff they can do. Having a sword just glow costs money and it would look weird. He was definitely one of my favorite characters. He made his mistakes but was always ready to lead the charge to achieve what he wanted. Battle Commander Stannis Baratheon.
I realize this was just an army of the few survivors of earlier battles, mercs, and wildlings who came with him (If any actually did) and that this was essentially the last big battle of his life, but it would have been cooler to see the army fall back into the wood and try to hold a defensive line. I know there's honor in the charge, but there's nothing wrong with holding a defense. "They could have caught the wood on fire" Well sure, that was an option, but it's also winter, with snow and ice caked on the trees, so there's a good amount keeping them wet. The Calv impact would def have been lessened, less they break through one line and get lead into a tree. It would also be smart to have your spearmen drop their spears and pretend to be swordsmen, only to reveal the truth after the horse ran into the kill box. This was actually how Rome defeated chariots in the egypt campaign.
Can I ask if you're talking about Mark Antony/Cleopatra and Octavian with the Egypt campaign? I was under the impression that the chariot had very much been relegated to ceremonial functions by even the early Roman Republic which seems to be borne out by what I can find on Egyptian chariots: With the advent of horseback riding by 1000 BC it lost most of its military importance and from that time on, the chariot was mostly replaced by the use of mounted cavalry. Yet chariots continued to be used particularly for hunting, and sometimes for sport racing, long after the demise of its usefulness in war.
0:10 I've always loved how he just saunters towards the enemy with that mildly annoyed look on his face. He knows he is going to die, he has nothing left to lose and he doesn't give a fuck.
In books Stannis had 3 times more soldiers at that point and he was on the way to hire 20 thousand mercenaries from Essos. Moreover, Boltons, Ryswells, Freys etc. also didn't have any horses left in frozen and starving Winterfell. So the series adaptation sucks from the 5th season till it's ending.
Those men were so loyal to follow him after losing at the Blackwater, going all the way north to beat Mance and his army, then marching south again to die at Winterfell. Just a wandering army from the time of Robb Stark and the other kings.
I remember when I saw this scene when it came out. It was very relatable for me, because I was also going through some rough patch and I was, like Stannis, kind of resigned, with the attitude of "well I'm gonna get fucked, and that is that. Might as well die gracefully". But then I saw the movie Henry V. The english army was in a bad spot like Stannis, about to get destroyed by a fresh, five times bigger army. Then Henry delivered his famous speech about Saint Crispin's day, with his whole point being "look, winning against all odds is where it's at, if you don't want to fight with me, cool, get the fuck out of here; the fewer, the better, more glory for the rest of us". The guy that was complaining at the beginning, who kind of got the "Stannis attitude" then said after the speech "God's will, my liege, would you and I alone, without more help, could fight this royal battle!" Then they went and won in Agincourt. I don't know, but it change the way I saw life. I don't resing no more to tough situations, nor try to look cool and tragic. I try to win no matter what. Winning when you have all in your favor is good enough, for is winning after all. Winning when you are fucked up... that's an amazing oportunity to make something worth remembering. While the frame of Stannis drawing his sword is epic and very dramatic, it's also defeatist. For me it's more inspiring the frame of Henry V surrounded by his "few, happy few, Band of Brothers", all of them excited and eager to go into battle, the fewer the better.
as all his men realize its over stannis looks down and realize all his faith in melisandre, the sacrifice of his daughter, he understands all of it was in vain, and then says, fuck it if im going to die it might as well be like a man. and his troops all frightened but the moment he pulls his sword they pull theirs . a commander and king like this can make all sodiers loyal to the absolute end EPIC
Awesome scene . He was at the very front . The tip of the spear & made it back all the way to the forest & then some . That in itself tells you that he did some hacking & slashing for sure
That may look epic but was extremelly bad written. He would never just casually walk towards Winterfell after losing many of his force and without a single scout or information about the enemy.
I don't even remember the context very well.. but i think I he was forced into this move.. he didn't have food and the closest place to get it from was winterfell
@@rias.gremoryyy It was quite the opposite, he had many options. He was stuck in the snow and, while he did have his supplies destroyed by 'twenty goodman' (another bullshit writing), his next move was to burn his own kid, which melted the snow (god knows why), thus clearing his way to wherever the fuck he wished to go. Bear Island, Deepwood Motte, Last Hearth Karhold were all closer than Winterfell. For some whatever the fuck reason, the Master Tactician and best Strategist alive in Westeros decides to march straight to the STRONGEST castle in the North and also one of the furthest from where he was. The look on his face he knew it was over. His forces were depleted and they had no cavalry. A 3rd of his army fled the battle before the clash even happened.
The way he pulls his sword, then calmly & slowly walks towards the 2,000 strong charging cavalry is one of the most bad ass scenes, I get goosebumps watching this.
Stannis was outnumbered. His army did not have any formation, they were dispersed. Stannis left the forest even though his army was overwhelmingly infantry and Bolton's cavalry would be disadvantageous in the forest. They should have built walls and digged ditches around their sides like Roman army did many times when they were outnumbered. The writers should have read history really. Many war scenes in Got are disgusting and they teemed with poor and ridiculous strategies.

Robert Baratheon did.
Stannis is the definition of Leader. He leads from the front, by example. The rest on that list are Commanders, but not leaders. They only give orders that braver men then carry out. Stannis gives orders in battle, aye. But then he marches right forth with his men and carries them out too.

You know it is a well-trained and well-disciplined army led by an
extraordinary commander when they managed to form up a solid front-line against a surprise cavalry attack in such a short time , all the while being exhausted from the march, the cold and the lack of nourishment. Respect~
Stannis may not have had the most troops, but they were the best in terms of quality
I love their armor.....also those flaming heart banners
Stannis was a moron for marching without a solid front line in the first place and for not scouting ahead to check if a fucking army was waiting to ambush him.
He actually commited the same mistake on blackwater and well he never learned.
@@ChaosAngel667 Stannis' wins in the field all happened when he surprised the enemy. interesting that thats how he lost here
It is because the Stannis of the series got all the good things he had in the book, including his strategic capacity, for example, in the battle of the blackwater in the books Stannis did not command the fleet if not that he
command of the land army that was in The southern bank of the Blackwater River waiting for the fleet, while the fleet was commanded by Imri Florent, Selyse Florent's brother, who, confident of a quick victory, would attack without exploring the Blackwater and with a closed position, in fact in later chapters Stannis will mentions to Davos that it was stupid on Imri's part to attack without exploring beforehand, continuing, Imri attacked the Lannister fleet in the Bay ignoring the fire signals coming from the shore by the army warning them of a giant chain that Tyrion command to build (unfortunately this is not shown in the series) which leads to the stannis fleet being trapped in the mouth of the river and being almost completely destroyed by Valyrian fire. So Stannis seeing that the only lines that tried to stop the enemy attack were broken, Stannis flees with what he can by getting on the Lysens pirate ships that Imry had left behind because he considered it dishonorable to use pirates in a battle
.
stannis retreats with some 2,500-3,000 soldiers out of the 35,000-40,000 who originally attacked Kingslandin. and of those 3000 survivors (almost all being cavalry troops since the cavalry would be the only thing that Stannis did not use in the black water) 2500 would go to the black castle to defeat the savages in what I consider one of the greatest asañas of the saga by ASoIaF. because the fact that an army of 2500 soldiers and a few hundred hermaons of the night manage to defeat a force of at least 100,000 people (I say at least because we are never told of how many savages there were, we are only confirmed that there are 30,000 warriors and it is not like the savages began to count how many they were) and also hundreds of giants and mammoths.
A pity that Benioff and Weise did not recreate this battle as it should be only to take away achievements and glory from Stannis in the series, since for some reason the army of hundreds of thousands of savages disappears from one moment to another and only a few are shown wild here and there and no giant or mammoth. Finally in the books Stannis is not yet defeated by the Boltons and in fact the most probable thing is that he wins, but good to see that we have to wait for "Winds of Winter"
By the way to write this I had to use the Google translator since I do not write or speak English, I am from South America. For which there are very likely a lot of spelling mistakes. My sincere apologies.

@@MrLambadus too bad, he still didn’t burn her in the books
@@MrLambadus I simply can't see Stannis burning Shireen in the books. He's too noble for that, and kinslaying goes entirely against his code. @Deepak Kool look D and D suck but this isn’t one of the reasons. They have restraints for stuff they can do. Having a sword just glow costs money and it would look weird.
"They could have caught the wood on fire"
Well sure, that was an option, but it's also winter, with snow and ice caked on the trees, so there's a good amount keeping them wet.

Those men were so loyal to follow him after losing at the Blackwater, going all the way north to beat Mance and his army, then marching south again to die at Winterfell. Just a wandering army from the time of Robb Stark and the other kings.
Despite losing I’d like to believe they helped thin out Bolton’s ranks, thus helping the Starks in the battle of the bastards.
