just literally love how Tony has formed and shaped Nadal:

I have coached high school tennis for 25 years. Rafa is one of my favorite role models that I use with my players. His footwork and court coverage is a great example because you have to get to the ball and be in position to hit it effectively like Rafa. Every shot has a purpose and placement to build a point like Rafa does. You have to get into your opponents head by running down everything like Rafa. Most important be a sportsman like Rafa and let your feet and racquet do the talking. I had the pleasure of watching lots of players since the 1970’s and no one runs down every shot or fights harder in long matches than Rafa.

Toni did advise his nephew to try playing with a left handed forehand. It's not unheard of for a lefty to play right-handed (Carlos Moya, for instance) or a righty to play lefty (Ken Rosewall, who wanted a better backhand). Rafa is otherwise totally right-handed for daily tasks and golf, but did play soccer left-footed. There's a documentary "Secrets of a Giant" about Rafa that claims he is right eye dominant. Playing a left handed forehand allows him to keep his dominant eye on the ball during the take back.

Toni DID NOT advise him. It was Rafa’s natural choice. He told him if he wanted to be in the top 10 rank, he needed to play with one hand. Rafa chose playing with his left hand because it felt natural to him, the same way he is a lefty futbol player.

To form character on kids one needs to be HONEST, SERIOUS, OBJECTIVE, IRONICAL at times, VERY OBSERVANT, CORRECT, LOVING, HARD, but most importantly one has to know the need to keep their EGO down while instilling the belief on consequence, reality, and that a person is as good as their actions during hard times. Very few people pay attention to the fact that his champion/winning athletic prowess has deteriorated due to his congenital foot problem - they talk of everything but that. anyone else would have given up - whereas his medics have even let him play by giving anaesthesia to numb that pain spot... i feel he has just surrendered himself to the game and lost so much of his natural charisma because of that... anyways... his openminded comments about himself and his colleagues and his preference to be less politically opinionated - than his outspoken colleagues makes him a much more "real" individual... hope he is able to workaround his problems and return to his old ways for a long time :-)...

No wander he has all those rituals on the court. Emotional damage is there. You don’t treat young kids like that. There is a lot of tennis players scared for life with family members not treating them right and well.

The difference is that Rafa could handle it in a possitive way and you can clearly see it in the relation he has with his uncle nowadays, his uncle knew he could handle it and made him grow as one of best and more revered sportsman in the world, because not only he is good and talented, he is also a very down to earth and respectful person. Something that some young pros in many sports lack.

No wonder so many WTA players are crying and having a breakdown. They don't have someone to toughen them up mentally. Life is not prefect, like Raffa said.

Nonsense! Nadal is respectful, down to earth and not egotistical because of his upbringing. Treating kids softly and not giving them trials and challenges leads to spoilt, entitled, rude and weak kids who can’t face challenges! Life is not easy nor is it meant to be

I wonder if it was uncle tony who forced nadal into getting the jbb; did he know the insidious damage it would do? did he care? after watching the end of the IW final match, and the following conference in which nadal admitted he had chest pain; trouble breathing and dizziness. classic signs of jbb damage ie periocarditis; inflammation of the heart muscle and lining; not fixable. he said it was rib damage; i doubt it; they will say its something else; but a plethora of jbbd soccer players with the same symptoms who cant play and drop dedd during play or found dedd later is an omenous bell...

I wonder what he does physically to cope with such a heavy workload for so long, without it taking it's toll on his body? There are many athletes who try the same method but fail due to impact it has on their bodies resulting in being injury prone. Something Nadal has avoided only until the end of his career. Are his natural physique and mental strength god-given or is even this more due to training than luck?

what? nadal had a LOT of injuries during his career. He didn't take part of 13 slam if I'm correct because of injuries (and played many half injured). Djokovic just 4 (and one because the vaccination issue). Around 2013 if I remember correctly there was the first big change in his playstyle because he couldn't run anymore as he was used to do
