  • ALL WINNERS OF ROLAND GARROS IN THE OPEN ERA (1968 - 2022)
ALL THE PAST FRENCH OPEN CHAMPIONS SINCE 1968
See all Roland Garros championship points of the Open Era,
Grand Slam tennis records of all time and find out:
When did Roger Federer win Roland Garros? Did John McEnroe ever win the French Open? How often did Björn Borg win Roland Garros?
Rafael Nadal has won 14 Roland Garros titles and set a record that might stand forever. The French Open 2022 Final between Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud could not have been more one-sided: 6:3 6:3 6:0 After a tough five setter against Felix Auger Aliassime Rafael Nadal had to face world no 1 Novak Djokovic in the Quarterfinal. The Serb had defeated Rafa Nadal in the 2021 Roland Garros Semifinal to give the King of Clay only his 3rd loss at the French Open. In 2022 however Nadal proved once more why he is the greatest clay court player of all time and defeated Djokovic in the French Open might session. In the Semifinal Nadal vs Zverev the Spaniard was in the lead before going into a second tie break when Alexander Zverev injured his foot and couldn't continue. This promoted Rafael Nadal to his 14th final at the French Open. As he took the Roland Garros 2022 title he. remains undefeated in Finals there and upped his win loss match record to 112 - 3. An outstanding achievement and a record of most macttch wins at any single Men's Tennis tournament. Roger Federer won 105 matches at Wimbledon but 'only' won 8 titles there. At Roland Garros Federer won the title in 2009 against Robin Soderling to complete his Career Grand Slam just like Andre Agassi did in 1999. On that day Federer equalled Pete Sampras for 14 Grand Slam titles. The most in history at that time. Now Rafael Nadal holds the record for most Grand Slam titles at 22, while Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic both have 20.
    THE HISTORY OF ROLAND GARROS
The tournoi de Roland Garros also known as the French Open is one of the 4 Grand Slams of the Tennis season. it is traditionally played on Clay courts and ends the European clay court season before the ATP Tour switches to grass and goes to Wimbledon. The history of the French Open dates back to the 1800s but in 1968 it was the first ever Grand Slam of the Open Era.
The first two editions featured two historical greats battling each other in the final and taking one title each: Ken Rosewall and Rod Laver. Laver completed a calendar year Grand Slam in 1968 by winning the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open all in the same year.
In the 70s the Swede Bjorn Borg dominated Roland Garros by winning it a record 6 times. Along with his 5 titles at Wimbledon this seemed like an almost unbreakable record.
in 1980s Mats Wilander and Ivan Lendl both won the French Open multiple times, denying the likes of John McEnroe a title.
In 1999 Andre Agassi won the French Open and completed a Career Grand Slam as the first man since Rod Laver in the Open Era. In the early 2000s Guga Kuerten was the man to beat at Roland Garros.
Then in 2005 came Rafael Nadal.

In 2020 Tsonga and other players made public that Rafa was sick in that match he lost to Soderling in 2009. To this date, Rafa has not said a word. But there you have a possible explanation.
2015 was Rafa’s worst year. He didn’t win a single clay court match in the European wing and won only one title in the whole year. Rafa calls that year the mentally injured year. Granted, Djokovic won fair and square, but he didn’t beat the best version of Rafa, because the best version of Rafa is unbeatable there, and considering that Wawrinka won the final, well, you just have to wonder if Djokovic was really the player to beat that year.
And in 2021 is undeniable that Rafa’s foot gave him a lot of problem during that match and the reason why he missed the rest of the 2021 tennis season.
It’s not taking anything away from the other players, it is taking a look at those three particular matches and analyze Rafa’s physical/mental condition those years to confirm if they beat the best version of Rafa. Point is, they didn’t.

I'll talk about his loss to Soderling.
I study Nadal like a book when he plays. It was very obvious that he was handicapped sometime in the third set if my memory is right.
He was moving gingerly around the baseline and was looking very funny, especially when receiving serve.
In fact in that 4th set it was clear he couldn't move freely and was suffering an ailment.
What i found frustrating is that he didn't say anything about an injury during the post match interviews. It's good to be humble and not take the credit from Soderling but i thought it was ridiculous he didn't mention the injury.
For those who doubt he was injured against Soderling, let me bust your bubble. His next match after that loss was an appearance in one of the pre wimbledon tournaments, and in his first match he was still moving gingerly from the first exchanges and retired and pulled out from the first match and skipped Wimbledon.
