  • Véronique Serret and William Barton perform their soaring composition "Kalkani." "Kalkani" means "eagle" in Barton's Kalkadoon language.
This piece is part of their Heartland series, where Barton and Serret draw upon the expansive sounds of our native Australian landscape.
Recorded at the Eugene Goossens Hall, ABC Sydney, as part of the ABC's Fresh Start Fund.

It's like two opposing forces assimilating. Both instruments and the noted all clash but also make something unique and beautiful .

Oh wow get goosebumps listening to this, if you close your eyes you could be sitting in the outback somewhere in Oz. In fact if you Google Kalkani you find it’s a volcanic crater in Nth Queensland so the music takes me there! The occasional vocals are very cool especially when William is harmonising with violin towards the end of the clip.

Heartland should consider collaborating with Cirque du Soliel. Haunting vocals & I have never heard the didgeridoo played so well. Phenomenal!

I am just in awe with his talent...
But can we please refer to the instrument as yidaki and not didgeridoo?
Every single performance I have watched the artist always explains that didgeridoo is not the name of the instrument.
I understand it's a key word so just put it in brackets but please always associate it with the name that first nations prefer.
    Thank you ♡

Hi - we are using didgeridoo in this instance as this is the name William Barton typically uses for his instrument. We use instrument names as preferred by individual artists, so you will find a variety of names for this particular instrument across performances on our channels.

@@ABCClassic I have seen William Barton a the Japanaroo festival litterally 2 months ago and he was the one who actually introduced it as a Yidiki, being not Australian myself, I had no idea the name was not aboriginal :) after that I started noticing the word Yidiki being used more and more often in various events involving first nation. It could be a very recent change where they are trying to reallocate the right name to the instrument. a lot of things are happening lately on that front and its good to see things move :)

Thanks for letting us know. We are using the term William Barton used at the time of recording. We will check with him if he would like this changed.

Is there a score available or a reliable transcription of this piece? I’m a didgeridoo player and although I can ply this I would like a score so my friend can join me on violin.

I was actually wondering as I listened - how is didgeridoo music transcribed?

Hi Hugh - Russell Torrance spoke with William Barton last year about how his music is notated in case this provides some insights for you: ab.co/3I4Yc2w

I think that they make it up as they go along. I do not think that you can call this music. Maybe percussion.
