Nice vid Owen! Thanks to the viewers, for the intersting questions, and to Owen for in depth answers! Keep it up @ GMBN! ;)
Thanks Owen for that explanation on the clutch. I had my Trek Rail for over a year now and found that the clutch was turned off since I bought it from the bike shop. Only watching GMBN tech stuff on rear wheel removal made me wonder as the clutch was off all the time. Never knew about this clutch thing. Now hopefully have a better riding experience. Keep up the great work guys. Thanks again Owen.
Great content & delivery Owen! Really enjoying the Tech channel once more 👍
Much appreciated!
10:38 the main reason for using nitrogen is to minimize the effect temperature has on tire pressure
Putting helium on tyres don't make it lighter, a Brazilian bike CZcams tried and somehow made the tyre heavier, the theory was that it needed more helium to get the same pressure than normal air, so it needed more helium than normal air, making it heavier
#AskGMBNTech Is there a way to determine the tire clearance of a frame if you cannot find the manufacturer specs for it? I have an old, discontinued frame and information about online is a little sparse. I've tried putting 2.4s in it and it only had a hairs width left between the edge knobs and the chainstays and that didn't look safe, so I switched to 2.2s and those look like they work much better. It's a steel hardtail frame so it probably flexes quite a bit so I'm assuming it'll need even more clearance just to be safe. Is there an actual minimum recommended gap between tire and frame? This information should come in handy as I have a tendency to acquire weird and obscure old bikes.
Great set of qs and as! Did you see Seth's video on narrow wide chain rings? It seems that narrow, wide rings are more important in chain retention than the clutch mechs. But more help must be better, I reckon.
#AskGMBNTech Hey guys! I have a regular 18 tooth ratchet on my DT Swiss hubs and I'm thinking in upgrading, will the 36t or 54t option "damage" my rear suspension performance? PS: It's a 130mm rear travel trail bike. Cheers
I got my brake cables wrapped around my steerer tube, no issues on enduro races, my mechanic is sick so ive been riding like that for a while and its ok
For the squeak in the drivetrain. I recently replaced the jockey wheels without lube and it squeaked only in the lowest gear (largest cog). Once I lubed the jockey wheels, the squeaks went away.
Good reminder to always lube your jockeys
My bike squeaks on the 3 smallest sprocket, with large chainring... other gears sound OK, even with worse cross chain.
#AskGMBNTech Every time I bleed my SRAM Guide R brakes, I finish by compressing the oil at the lever and obtain a nice small lever travel before it reaches resistance. Though once I screw out the syringe, oil pours out of the bleed hole and lever travel becomes crap! Any tip on how to obtain a better result without buying RSC's?
This applies to all businesses including bike mechanics - set-up your own servicing business, build up the customer base, hire more mechanics, now you get paid for the work you do while also getting a share of the money the mechanics you hired make...
guys i need your help. can you use sram guide brake pads on code brakes? bought the wrong ones..
about helium, I use it for scuba-diving and it's quite expensive, so if you have to reinflate every day you need to have deep pockets
Wow that's interesting, do you put it in the tanks you breath?
@@gmbntech yes, divers incorporate helium into their gas mix to mitigate the effects of gas narcosis due to nitrogen
'normal' air is 80% nitrogen 20% oxygen
oxygen is necessary for us, nitrogen isn't and nitrogen is responsible for the narcosis
so the deeper you go the more you want to reduce the percentage of nitrogen in you gas mix
and because helium is expensive you only put the amount absolutely required to be safe an do not more, very fun stuff :)
#askgmbntech tire sealant and tubeless question I had a WTB trailboss 2.4 rear tire set up tubeless after 4 months use i found it deflating through the week so serviced it with a refresh of sealant but the fresh kept leaking through innumerable pinholes in the side wall of tire , still plenty of life in tread so dropped in a tube . Question would removing old dry sealant (no sharp tools used) caused the issue and is there a limit of hole size for sealant closing ?
Helium in tires is just a recipe for leaks. It's a very small molecule. Buoyancy of helium is 1g/L. So you're saving less than 1 gram for a massive leak problem
Just purchased my first full suspension bike, a Rocky Mountain Instinct A30. The bike has a Rockshox Select Deluxe+ shock, that makes a noticeable fluid noise under compression (well not locked out) do new lower end shocks usually make noise, or should I tear down, inspect and service?
#AskGMBNTech
#AskGMBNTech , Can I use SRAM GX derailleur bearing jockeys wheels on a SRAM NX derailleur?? Also about using a GX shifter on a NX derailleur?
Thanks.
Why does my linkage squeak when my shock actuates, but only when it’s clean- do I need to replace the bearings as they are the originals from a 2014 bike? #AskGMBNTech
#AskGMBNTech Greetings Tech Team. I’m a 60yo who recently had a bad crash. Mind was in neutral when it happened and I landed on my helmet just above my right eye. Ko’d for 20 mins and a subdural haematoma for my effort. The insulting part is I was only going 10kph. Wear your lid people. My question is as I was wearing an open face helmet at the time, beside the chin guard, does a full face enduro helmet have a higher impact rating? I better err on the side of caution from now on. Thanks for your time.
#AskGMBNTech My Ergon Saddle keeps on squeaking, if I get onto it. I have tightened the seatpost clamp to the written Nm, put some grease on the rails and so on. But I think the noise comes from the area, where the rails merge into the saddle. Further infos: when the saddle was new, it was silent. but after i had to clean it, because my rear wheel tore and sprayed tubelesmilk all over my bike, the noise became louder and louder. How can I fix this? cheers Andri
#AskGMBNTech Is there an easier way to detect where a creak is on a bike. I have a Carbon full suspension frame and there is a subtle creaking sound. I hear it while seated or standing, so I know it's not the seat or post. It basically happens when the suspension is compressed, but I can't tell if it's the front or the rear suspension because I hear the sound throughout the frame. It would be neat if there was an electronic tool that could tell where the sound is coming from. Any tricks or tips would be awesome!
#askgmbntech
I converted a 3x8 to a 1 x 11 but now i am thinking of chainline
What is a good chain line
In what gear should the chain be straight ?
Remember the days when only the tech savvy and wrench happy people had mountain bikes.....ahhh those where the days. Now every numptie under the sun wants one, because its trendy and a luxury😪😪😪...BREAKS MY HART💔
#AskGMBNTech "I recently bought some less aggressive tires for my MTB for some upcoming events and also got some TPU tubes. Thinking the bike came with tubes in them, I opened up the tires only to find they were Tubeless (with no sealant) This came directly from the factory like this. Seeing where the air valve stuck out, inside was a raised section to seat the valve. I did not swap tires fearing the raised section would have impact on the TPU tubes. Also not sure if the new tires are Tubeless Ready. Should I stay tubeless or can I go with the new tires and TPU tubes? Thanks!!
You should be able to find out if your new tires are TL compatible from the manufacturer's website (if it's not written on the tire irself). If possible, i would always go for a tubeless setup... :)
#askgmbntech For long rides in the saddle, i.e. multiple hours, how does the change in angle caused by suspension movement affect seat angle and should you set your seat angle to take it into account?
#AskGMBNTech how come nobody came up with a beadlock wheel yet ? for DH of course
PS: If any company sees this and goes through with the idea I would love a free wheel set pretty please😁😅
#AskGMBNTech Hi, is it possible to increase the travel of my Rockshox Pike Select 150mm air fork, on the stanchions it has the sag measurements for both 150mm and 160mm. Thanks, keep up the great content.
#AskGMBNTech been thinkg alot about why none are using internal gears? Is the lets say Alfine so bad if you can/could fit it to a hardtail?
Of course it would, some folks have found themselves actually flying hundreds of feet above the ground so be careful about how much helium you put in the tires.
You don't have to apologize for saying "screw" lol.
But calling a screw a bolt is a cardinal tech sin.
#AskGMBNTech would Beeswax work for waxing my chain ?
too sticky I think, poor performance - no idea about durability or chain wear
Owen the roadie👍🏼
#askgmbntech - With Science pushing us towards moving the weight off the back wheel and into the bottom bracket area (unsprung mass and all that jazz), is it time to revisit the weird world of HammerSchmidt and planetary gear shifting?
Is doddy still in gmbn Tech?
Nitrile rubber has the lowest helium permeation coefficient of all polymers iirc, so yeah convince someone to make nitrile bike tube ... Do they exist?! 😅
Helium can effuse through metal. It will leave everything.
#AskGMBNTech i have a 2014 canyon spectral with 2014 fox 32 talas forks. can i get away with putting new technologies in it?
#askGMBNTech Does a 10mm reduction on stem length make a huge difference?
no, only about 1 cm... ;)
Yeah, just like letting your breath out.
Hydrogen gas is a quarter of the weight of helium. This is why Nascar football teams use hydrogen filled footballs (the long skinny ones) and F1 football teams use hydrogen filled footballs (the round ones).
Hydrogen is only half the weight because it comes in the form of h2.
@@oliverjacobs8594 That is used by nude beach volleyball teams.
@@alexanderscott2567 what?? All hydrogen gas is half the weight of helium gas.
@@oliverjacobs8594 Until it is compressed by the mega-gravitational event of a star... shaped mylar clown balloon!
I would have to think that even though helium would technically make the bike lighter, it really wouldn't make much difference because the rotational mass will remain the same. So yes, your wheels will weigh less, but it will take the same amount of energy to turn them.
Here in Brazil, a yt channel has already tested the weight with helium gas and didn't see any difference even though he made some mistakes when taking the measurement.
czcams.com/video/FxYWH2O1Xyw/video.htmlsi=TPUqhgrwIs-U6GoL
The explanation of the size of the molecule would be the only good justification, even though it is more expensive to inflate the tires and you cannot find gas on every corner.
Where’s Anna?
Lowest gear means lowest gear. 1st. Nobody ever says lowest gear for the smallest cog. You wouldn't ever say im just spanking it down the autobahn in my lowest gear!
#AskGMBNTech how can i make my bike heavier without spending money?
Helium and CO2 will leak thru rubber because of the molecular structure. Butyl rubber used in the fabrication of bicycle tires and tubes are a carbon structure, making C02 and He a poor choice. Most sealants like X-Sauce don't like CO2, they probably would like helium and it might last longer.
"cavation". I think you mean cavitation.
Cavation...?
Let Helium for science.
#askgmbntech
Where’s Issac nowadays ?
Cavitation is when the oil basically boils, Areation is when gas gets into the oil from the IFP or air can. Think of those tubes of red liquid that boil when you hold them.
Super or CA glue dont let Loctite become synonymous
Stepup for a bike mechanic is becoming bike mechatronic with qualification allowing to dig inside DI2/AXS and not just do the parts swap. Dedicated suspension mechanics are also in deficit now.
Nope , just your wallet !
Love from india - kerala ( gods own country)
Are e-bikers doing this to try and make their “bikes” lighter?
A bike tech who doesn't know the difference between low and high gears. Theres an L + H on the bloody mech for gods sake 🙄
He obviously knows the difference hence why he assumes what gears they are talking about, but a lot of people don't know the difference hence why he wishes they were more clear so he could make sure he was giving them the best answer.
i get Nitrogen in my car tires, its definatly better. My tires hardely ever have needed topping up. been doing this for years definatly do it. My tyre guy does it for free but it would cost £10 for all tyres so cheap.😊
I do fill up my bikes with nitrogen at the local alignment shop (5$ a pop) since it's inert it's supposed to keep sealant fresher... Seems to work well.
Oh I also got my dpx2 and zeb filled up with nitrogen, I forgot. Tbh I didn't service them for months they're probably out of gas right meow 😂
@@LaurentiusTriarius I am going to try that with my fox factory stuff, it's 100% better in my car so why not everything else. I am so surprised that in this video he qent on a bit like it was new cutting edge when it's not been doing it for 10 years or so with my car haha
"Hello Owen"
