Daily Driven Porsche Full Detail Burned Paint Disaster!

- This Daily Driven 2006 Porsche 996 is owned by Mike Musto, from the show Big Muscle that features muscle car builds/stories/drives on CZcams. Mike also happens to be one of my closest friends in the world and I promised him IF he ever added a Porsche (aka non-muscle car) to his collection, I would give it a full detail. This is the story of me fulfilling my promise and discovering the burned paint disaster during our pre-detail, used car inspection, and subsequent deep cleaning. What I learned about paint restoration and "framing" will change the way I detail cars in the future. I was lucky enough to detail the Porsche 996 with my 2 closest car detailing buddies, Kevin Brown and Derek Bemiss. For those of you who have watched AMMO since 2011 on the Drive Channel and on AMMO NYC channel since 2012, you will know that there wasn't much car detailing content anywhere...no less CZcams. Today, there is so many car detailing channels that is can become overwhelming. Kevin and Derek (and Jason Rose) are the original detailers...before detailing was made a "thing" on CZcams. Ironically, the best or "most informational" content tends to be the least viewed or "watched". This is one of the videos that doesn't have the most disgusting car ever, moldy car interior, power washing mud, etc etc...but it does have tips and tricks that will change the way you think and approach your car or your car detailing business. In a day and age of "CZcams is King", I think those (Kevin, Derek, and Jason) who impart the most knowledge to the next generation, should be the ones treated as royalty. Learn and enjoy, as I did, from the masters. I promise you at least one of these techniques you will likely never seen before. Amazing stuff. Privileged to call them my friends.

Framing is one of those things that separates the top 10% of detailers from the other 90%. A customer won’t be able to pick out exactly what you did, but subconsciously (as said) they will notice the smaller detailers and overall be pleased with the work.
All those small details add up and make the car look new
Can we spend a moment and appreciate the conduit routing at this building?
I was just about to comment this. Absolutely beautiful. I would have expected nothing less in a facility like that.
Yes, it's beautifully done. Really admire the workmanship.
Very true
Literally 🔥🔥
He just uploaded a video giving a tour of the building, it’s amazing
I have worked proffessonaly with detailing for the past 5 years now. Every single time i watch one of your videos with all these amazing people in it, i always learn something new! That's one of the reasons i love watching your videos. The quality of concent is just superb and enjoyable to watch! Hats off Larry, you are the man!! Big love from sweden!
@@autodetailz5483 Not just the detailers ;) everyone who love detailing a car.
and i absolutly agree, that we learn something new everytime. truly amazing
@@amdusiasdark honestly anyone who owns a car that they care about should watch these. Most people are clueless on even how to wash it.
I love when you three work together... the thought pattern, the innovative ideas, the "out of the box" moves to get around what could be a tragic scenario. Just unbelievable!! Thanks for bringing us on this one... craziness!!
“he’s cleaning the tread right now”
“you realize I have to drive home, right?!”
🤣
Man I missed Kevin in videos. This dude spent almost an hour with me on the phone getting into the washer mod then went on to give me an insane amount of info in the small amount of time. A genuinely awesome dude!
Thank you!!
@@iamwaxman Absolutely. I was the guy that ordered like 6 jars of Meguiars mild clay with the washer and you called to make sure it wasn't a mistake ha. I will never forget that call, you're awesome!
@@fpswick8458 That's funny, I did the same thing, texted Kevin about the washer mod on a new machine and he called me back instead and chatted like an old friend. How do you top that kind of service?
What's the "washer mod" ?
Framing is something that I've always done without realising, being unable to justify the cost of professional paint correction and only recently getting my own polishing machine; I always got compliments on how clean my car looked even with swirly paint despite only actually washing it once every month or two. Reviving the tyres and plastic / rubber trim makes the biggest difference for the very low cost, in my opinion.
8:27 Larry's suggestion of focusing on certain parts during each maintenance wash is something I've subconsciously done with my car but didn't consider it part of the framing process. Like he explains, I don't like to set aside a whole day to do everything in one go. Instead I split these little details up until the car is framed.
This is by far my favorite video. This "framing" is what most cars out there need to look better. Adds to it, not all car enthusiasts have access to professional polish kits and tools. I guess framing is the biggest bang for the buck or time.
Love seeing a 996 get this level of attention, amazing detail
I like how you’re doing custom intros for each episode. I know it’s A LOT OF WORK, but it comes through. Keep experimenting!
Having more fun than children in Disneyland, only an enthusiast or pro can appreciate this joy. Amazing turnaround for a “ burnt” car. Looked incredible and very instructive. I feel so much better now, last year when my wife was gone for a week , I did a wheels off, every nook and cranny detail on her Nissan Leaf that is a 2013 model. I can remember hours and hours of decontamination in door jams, removing hard water. Literally worked everyday for a full 7 days.
Buffing the rubber was absolutely a new one for me. I’ve sanded moldy rubber but this was just over the top. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ‘s for the production as well.
Framing is actually the main thing I focus on. I just have a daily driver, and making sure the door jams, etc are clean and tidy is one of the nicest things. Especially because I dont really have the tools or skills to go to town polishing.
Another awesome video! That Porsche looks so much better, and I love the idea of "framing". It's a concept I never had a word for when I'm working on customers cars that *need* correction but they aren't springing for it. I've always referred to it as "dialing in" or "classic detailing". You guys are next level.
Its really useful for us weekend warriors and small side hustle detailers to see you guys struggle and have problems to over come; seeing you guys figure things out really helps us and our “spidey senses” when it comes to overcoming an issue
6:05 Aren't we gonna talk about the lovely pipe management on the wall?
Oh man, soon as I heard Kevin Brown. That man is just on another level when it comes to polishing. This is going to be good
@Tuki COOL 😎😎😎!!!
stfu
Detailing at a certain level becomes a skill not just a craft or a hobby, for me it's bordering on being a fine artist or a master craftsman, not everybody has the eye, the patience or the knowledge to do it to the highest level...great to watch.
So paint being harder in the cold polished better…
Interesting. Thank you 🙏
I like the idea of framing and realized that i was doing it without even knowing. I don't have the proper tools or knowledge to polish the paint but what I have is elbow grease so whenever I clean my car I just focus on the little details and people say it looks like new even though the paint is in the same condition. Great content as ever. Also I've seen clay on the glass but never compound good idea.
KB really the 🐐! I could listen to him all day long.
Giving some “this old house” vibes. I like it.
anazing work as always...!! i thought i was insane until i saw how kevin brown washs his cars !! love the tip on polishing the glass rubber trims ! awesome !!!! rgds from n Cyprus
Cleaning the threads on the tyres..! Next level!
We need to appreciate this guy's ability to recognize and adapt to the situation the paint is giving him. Absolutely phenomenal
I loved when the owner said 'You do realize I have to drive this home right?'
Nice to see that I was actually framing my own cars for many years, but didn’t know it was called framing. That was taught to me by my brother , who at the time was cleaning his “new” 54 Buick.
Always get a bunch of good info when I watch your videos. Feels like a class where I’m watching the master(s) at work. Definitely taking notes for when I start detailing. Strive for nothing but the best and that’s what I love about your videos Larry.
“He’s cleaning the tread right now” 😆 I love it
@P - Tech, any new videos coming? Love your content.
Love the term 'framing'. I found years ago a denture brush works great for all the nooks and crannies. It's never 'missed' unless the customer sees it. Great job guys.
Your recommendation of a denture brush was great!
Thank you.
It's crazy, I've been a professional driver for decades, but this makes me yern for the years I detailed cars as a teenager
Wow. Add Jason Rose and its the 4 Horsemen / Mt. Rushmore of detailing royalty. What a video Larry.
The heat from 4 halogen lamps was the first thing I thought of when he said the panel was warm. Need some high CRI LED work lights for Kevin’s mobile setup.
Thanks for the tips on the exterior rubber. I always pick up some new thing watching your videos.
Stunning! Almost teared at the end seeing the detail Kevin put in the wheel well and the appreciation on Mike's face and also Ammo's right at the end of another awesome job. Thanks for this amazing channel!
The amount of information and knowledge you give in these videos, is incredible! Thank you so much for that!
"Ironically, the best or "most informational" content tends to be the least viewed or "watched".
This is so true and stuck out so much from the description to me.
Switch to LED lights and you shouldn’t heat the paint.
Larry, I think this video was one of the best ones so far, very informative and interesting; also it’s always great to have Kevin around! 🤩
It’s always a pain to remove the bra - you can try to pull it up on the other way; pull it away of you rather than pulling it towards you (it helps to avoid the painful blisters on the fingers). 😊
A year on and Kevin just done brushing the front bumper, now he's ready to start the rest of the car. such a legend!
Wow Larry, Absolutley knocked it out the park with this one. Looks like a brand new car in the sun light. 10/10
I've polished trim by hand and machine for two decades though not all trim react the same. Kevin is a marvel though, he's one of the best people on the planet and I learned alot from him.
loved this episode soo much. It was full of info, tips, tricks and transparency. Thanks for the great content as always!
framing is what actually adds visual value to a used car on resale
I appreciate your willingness to showcase the amazing skills of other talented detailers. Great collaboration!
its amazing those little details such as the lights warming up the panel to much to get the desired result, its all these little things that always makes it interesting, and every day is a school day
This is a great example that highlights the importance of proper Technique and of having a preservation mindset, otherwise this burn through can happen and your left working twice as hard.
incredible detailing at its finest. Amazing what a little (or a mountain of) OCD can do!! What an inspiration of what you can do. What a team, you guys truly look like you're having a great time, even if the project is a nightmare. Thanks for sharing Larry!
Mike showed a lot more gratitude and awareness of what level of effort went into this project than a lot of customer reactions are on yours and other channels. Class act by Him, you and your friends doing this for a pal. Nicely done.
Kevin is crazy in the best way possible! 😂
Very cool seeing the gang together and making the best of a tough detail job. Amazing results!
Fantastic as always! Love seeing the problems that come up and solutions you guys find. The car looks so much better!
It's AWESOME when CZcams removes subscriptions randomly. I am glad I still had this video in the tabs or I may not have noticed no more Ammo videos coming up in my feed. Baruch Hashem.
Y'all do some amazing work and the people you have around you willing to share ideas and work processes is even more amazing. The restoring rubber work is something I'm going to have to try out.
This was super helpful and informative! Just bought a jeep with some spots like this Porsche so I’ll definitely look to enhance other areas - thanks for the tips!
What a great topic to cover! I've had several people tell me that they don't want to bother with a detail of their car now that it's got some visible defect (paint burn, rust spots, paint chips, etc).
I’ve always loved how Guys like Larry and Kevin do the job without over complicating everything with a million chemicals.
Really cool to finally see this car after it got teased... and to see this video go up right after I finished cleaning my own 996!
Dang, Mr. Larry! Love it when you record with the A team! Your work is absolutely stunning, detailing AND storytelling. I learn so much from your detailing and the way you cut the videos. Keep it up my man!
-Portland, Oregon
I'll have to try the rubber technique
I've always done the windows that way 🇺🇸
Great video! Changed my thinking about the importance of paint perfection above all else - "framing" is a great concept! Inspired to do the same on my 1999 996 which ironically lived most of its life in LA and was not garaged. Its paint is um, less than perfect.
I love the joy that you/Larry has while playing with cars. It's infectious 😁 i love the joy in the owner's faces when they see your work.
i love, utterly love that your job is making people happy.
I’m glad you made a video about framing, I was detailing a Honda Pilot with the bad rubber deal and said to myself what if I took ap and alittle brush and hit it really quick, came back brand new glad I seen this video thanks mike🙏🏼
What a beautiful transformation. Great job as always my bru.
Brilliant information in this one - especially regarding the treatment / restorative approach to the rubber trim.
Oh my god, the people that did the plumbing for the electrical conduit at WCCS are craftsmen
Musto is such a cool dude. I loved his series on Drive. He knows his cars, especially muscle cars. And isn't afraid to put them to the test. You can tell he's friends with Farrah. Those guys are nut cases to a degree.
You guys that worked on this Porsche are just amazing, truly. What a job! Inspiring!
I was actually framing my own cars for many, many years but didn’t call it that. I learned to do this from my brother who did it on his “new” 54 Buick.
The attention to detail. In small areas like the paint being so thin. The thought process that you-all did to come to agreement to just go back too detail ( frame work). Was very smart. Just watching how difficult it was to treat the area's that found difficult. Great job actually AWESOME job.
Great seeing the three of you together again!!!! As always amazing details!!!
Always love these videos because I learn so much. It's such an information and learning rich environment. It's also nice to see some stuff you did that I am also doing. Just love these videos.
Probably the most valuable episode, for me, for quite some time. The paint on my car(s) are usually destroyed with rust here and there to boot but alot can be accomplished with just an intensive detailed cleaning.
What a difference..great job as usual..I've been using that rubber polish trick for years...it's so satisfying to see like new rubber...
Great job on that Porsche. Soon as a saw those halogen lights so close to the car I immediately thought that's whats heating up the panels and causing the polish to melt when applied to a hot surface.
This Porsche paint was something else. For me, if all else fails, a rotary, waffle pad and Hyper Polish will always work. Most likely, this Porsche would've kicked my butt haha
That’s such a cool video. What a great job. Mike looked thrilled! Who wouldn’t be?! It came out pretty awesome. I definitely learned a few things. How cool to see you guys at work. Well done!
Amazing video, love to see your detailing, but the collaborative work is always a special treat !
Interesting trick with the compound on the rubber. I discovered (by accident) a similar trick for dealing with the fine pin-stripe scratches on my Land Rover’s plastic trim along the A pillars and other exterior bits. Not deep, but very noticeable from going through the bush on the trails. Nothing was getting rid of them.
On a whim, thought “why not?” and used a fine polish on them and it buffed them out perfectly. They looked brand new!
WOW, fantastic work. Always amazed at these videos.
Thank you Larry! Amazing!
The videos AND results are always so priceless when you get the gang together!
Beautiful outcome 👌🏻
Mike brown such a master!! When these 2 get together nothing can stop em they are just amazing to watch
Beautifully done Larry 👌 watched every second!
LOVED this video. The whole concept of “framing” I always felt was important. So many people skip this step or don’t think it’s worth the time but it’s amazing how it can totally finish the whole picture. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who’s ever tried using a tooth brush and polish on rubber trim. But I never thought about trimming the brushes. And polishing the glass I have done that too. I prefer after a wash, “framing” and THEN foam rubber clay bar alternative before heading into some sort of a polish or protection phase.
Kevin Brown the mad genius of detailing.
What was the water-based polish compound that Kevin used on the rubber trim?
Asking the important questions
I would also like to know this.
I would like to know too
Definitely a Meguiars product, looks like the "Marine Heavy Oxidation Scrub" M17732, based on the color and bottle shape, which is described as a water-soluble solution. Seems to be the closest match i could find in like 7-10 minutes.
I sent him a message on Facebook. Here is his reply: "Hello. You can use all sorts of compounds… most of the currently available compounds are water based.
I’m pretty familiar with Meguiar’s, so:
M84 Compound Power Cleaner
M85 Diamond Cut
M100 Pro Speed Compound (which is what I used)
M105 Ultra-Cut Compound
D300 (DA Microfiber Correction Compound)
The consumer product Ultimate Compound will all work!"
I have been watching Larry’s videos for like 3/4 years now and every video I am truly amazed by his amazing talent and how well he is at this. Ammo products are amazing too if people haven’t used it…. This stuff is better than any you can buy at a store. KEEP UP THE AWESOME COOL WORK BUDDY!!!
Appreciate it a lot :)
Currently on autotrader for a 4s...... thanks Musto...
One word, WOW. Amazing detail. What product did you use to clean the rubber trim and plastics on the outside of the car? I know Meguiars makes a rubber and trim cleaner.
My favorite detailers to watch on CZcams!
You and your crazy friends have created a simple but powerful message here and I am very grateful for this content, as I always am when you post a new video
🤯
Outstanding as usual!
Turned out beautiful. Learned a few things too! Excellent work.
Thank you!
Absolutely astonishing. Great work.
Kevin is a legend! Love all of Your work! Keep it up!
This made me realize there are levels to professional detailers, absolute masters at work here, love it
Thank you! Derek & Kevin are always a pleasure to work with :)
Man this was amazing! I need to rejuvenate my trims on my Jeep now. Great job you guys!
Always great content, Larry!!
