Re: Grey's story about switching to the slightly closer, non-uphill walk gym. He says he feels like moron to have trick himself to exercise by switching gyms. In my opinion, if something feels "stupid" but it works, then it's not really stupid.
Convincing yourself do something uncomfortable is already hard.
Any psychological "tricks" you have to use are smart if they have desired effect - getting you to do the uncomfortable thing.
Or you could find a more pleasant alternative, and adapt it a little to point you closer in the direction of your goals.
Like, exercise is unpleasant, but games are fun. Can you find a game that involves you moving your body? Optional attach weights. DDR, Saber Beats, and Just Dance are all examples.
Doesn't work for everything, but for the things you can apply it, it works really well!
Yeah agreed. The thing that got me to take up driving lessons again (at age 34 with major driving anxiety) was to learn on an automatic. I tried to learn on a manual because I was told "it'll give you more choices" but I just couldn't process all of the steps and got intimidated. Driving still scares me a little bit, but I've gotten way further than I ever have. (I just started learning how to reverse parallel park!)
@@CreatrixTiara omg. I swear your post was mine. I'm in the exact same situation as you...same age everything! I've been avoiding driving for so many years and since moving to a new city, decided to finally get it done. I'm happy so say that I'm progressing along well and next month will take my driving test and get my licence once and for all! So I wish you all the best in getting yours!
AeroGold1 I always say “If it work, it isn’t stupid.”
It has been 1 year that ai started doing gym 5x times a week. It's just life changing, I feel way better about myself and my confidence is over the roof.
How's that working out for you months later?
I made 2018 my Year of Magic. I had an idea for a stage magic project going in, but at the time I just thought it'd be a small project while I reconnect with a lost childhood love. It SNOWBALLED - to a full show with two seasons and am upcoming international tour. If I went into the year thinking "this year I'll make a full Melbourne Fringe show" I'd be frustrated and disappointed. But the theme concept allowed for some space.
Woah congrats!
Wow. Very cool!
That's important! The vague theme allows you do more than you planned, not just less.
Although I'm 10 months late, my 2021 theme is Year of Art. I want to hone my art skills and draw consistently. Not just at school or in other places. Learn something new every week, sketch every day during the week and occasionally work on one big piece using things I've learned.
This is 5 months late, but you could also try seasons of x. More bytesized (bitesized?) and not as daunting.
Keep up the good work!!!

Today begins the Year of Revival.
How did the year go? 😊
@@jpaugh64 oh man... it's been a year lol.
Overall, I'd have to say it's been one of the best years of my life. Now, that feels really weird to say, of course; we are still talking about a year in which political turmoil, widespread disease, and ever-renewing logistical nightmares all became entirely too commonplace. It's also the year my 3rd attempt at starting a business failed, the year I had to move back home because I couldn't pay rent, the year my parents decided to get a divorce, and the year I lost a good friend...
But... none of that stuff was related to my theme, nor were they things I had much control over. My focus this year has been inward from the outset, and as it turned out, most of the downfalls it provided meant that I had *a lot* more free and idle time in which to mull things over. While I'll admit I've kinda neglected my themes for the past ~6 months, my first two seasonal themes (Forgiveness and Candor-the first reffering primarily to forgiving *myself* for my past failures and wrongdoings, and the second being as much about introspective honesty as it is about being truthful to others) have played huge roles in shaping the way I now think about myself, the way I approach problems, and how I interact with people on a daily basis.
I rediscovered a love for drawing that I've been neglecting since college. I dug deep, found, and began to uproot several deeply ingrained prejudices, misunderstandings, and self-destructive tendancies that I didn't even realize I had. For the first time in my life, I feel like I've got a real solid handle on just exactly who I am, what I want out of life, and how to get it. I feel more than revived; I feel reborn.
@@LiveWire937 That's awesome! Especially considering that you thought you were pointing downward at the start of the year! I hear echos of things I've spent the last several years learning. In particular, I'm happy to hear that you got such great results from Forgiveness and Candor.
I can say, those two have been heavy hitters for me as well. I noticed that I spent so much time lying to others in order to avoid confronting the truth myself! And, then I lied and just told myself I'm an honest person. I found out that my own lies were the source of many of my anxieties. I'd share more, but one of my themes is listening more carefully.
Regarding your business, I bet failing at that taught you a lot. Do you think you'll have another go at a biz this coming year?
Actually, if there are things you can share publicly, Who are you? What is it that you want?
@jpaugh64 yes, exactly! So good to talk to someone who's had a similar experience. I found personally that I'd always considered myself to be very honest, whilst deluding myself day and night-most often, in pursuit of shallow goals that just... Didn't really matter to me anymore. They were mostly just things a younger version of myself had been *taught* to want, set goals around, work hard towards, etc... And, even though I'd since outgrown the elitist, materialistic mindset that had created those goals in the first place, I was still pouring *all of my productive energy* into chasing them for... What exactly? Approval? Some sense of continuity? Preservation of an identity and self image that I had worked so hard to build, yet felt no meaningful connection to?
That's kinda why I haven't immediately run right back out there in search of yet another dream to sell. I'm still determined to create and own my means of income someday, but the way I was going about it before was all about "what's the most profit I can make with the least risk?"... Which is just all wrong *for me.* I don't care about getting rich, I just want to feel engaged and interested in my work! I want my work to speak to people, and make a positive impact on their lives, and most importantly, I want to be free to enjoy my life as it is, however it is, without measuring it against anyone else's expectations.
So, I'm definitely not done trying to run a business, but I don't know if I'll be ready to start again this year or not. I'm still kinda looking for the right word/phrase, but my theme for 2022 is going to be all about building the skills, work habits, and mindset I need to start trying to get by as an artist. I want most of all to make animated films-it's been my biggest dream since I was a young child, but it was never encouraged.
Now, I'm determined to write and storyboard at least one feature length film in my lifetime, even if I have to do it all myself with no budget and never get to see anything made of it. In the meantime, though, I plan to start making some kind of edutainment animations here on CZcams in the next couple years. That'll be on a new channel, however, which I have yet to pick a name for :/

I tried to keep that as a guiding light and the most stressful thing I've done in my life became aligned with my theme and felt like growth. it is extremely rewarding. in 2022 I'm moving to Seasonal themes, because this just frigging works!!!!
For the workout thing: I made it a nightly task that I MUST finish my workout before having my shower and making my dinner. I have conditioned myself to be very ashamed of myself if I ever have to cut my workout short because it’s getting too late. I’ve lots many hours of sleep because I wasted so much time procrastinating doing my sets, but now, I feel restless if I haven’t worked out before dinner.

Hello internet
@@labrador_dali "in conversation with XXX" by mystiverse is a good one.
My 2016 New Years Resolution was to have no more New Years Resolutions.
So far I am doing great.
I'm here to hear an hour and a half of foiled plans
I've been following your cgp grey channel for 4 years now, this is my first grey podcast.
My theme was to write and I wrote 40 pages of my book.
I'm at about 55 pages or so.
I had never thought about themes before but this has inspired me to try something new. 2020 will be "The Year of Betterment" I want to come out of 2020 feeling better about myself than I do now. There are many small aspects to this but it boils down to the fact that I've gotten into a lot of small bad habits that add up and by the end of 2020 I want to have at least a few less bad habits or maybe offset them with some good habits, whatever it takes to feel a little better about myself at the end of 2020 than I do now.
It's charming to read this on this day... wonderful and charming.
MajorMushu yikes, this makes me realize how unpredictable 2020 has truly been.

My 2020 will be the Year of Communication. Including practicing Portuguese, prioritizing colleague & client communication types, and emphasizing positive talk to myself (in response to mental, physical, and emotional cues).
That's brilliant. I was trying to figure out a way to make a theme that involves learning Spanish but didn't want to call it the year of Spanish. Communication sounds great!!
That didn't age so well...
Eai aprendeu português?
Actually I disagree, the past year was still about communication for me. Especially getting used to communicating with students over Zoom instead of in a classroom, and communicating with friends locally through other means than having dinner/coffee meet-ups. A lot of phone calls and video chats. Once I set a goal, I'm usually able to stick to it, even if the parameters change. I hope your year was okay.
Sim, ainda sou uma gringa, mas tenho praticado todas as semanas e continuo melhorando. Abraços da Índia.

“i picked a terrible year”, just a classic line in 2021. Thanks for everything, this felt like a good expansion on the Theme idea.
Ring Fit on the switch has sold me.
Same, it is brilliant and it is so rewarding to do exercise with that game.
Bruh last december (way before covud was a woring thing in my country) i decided 2020 will be a year of outside activity.... Really couldnt have picked any thing easier
My Theme was traveling
Since I've started the new year already, I've decided to do this theme, but with my age. I have a long-term goal, and every year should have its own theme to help me accomplish this.
Unemployment is the key to 'year(s) of less:
Less money
Less food
Less buying stuff
Less going out
Less hope
Less sanity
You get the picture.
Unemployment and minimalism are 2 different things.
Minimalism is a choice. You are choosing to let go of unnecessary clutter and distractions.
Unemployment might be a choice. But I have not heard too many people complain about having too much money.
Boy were you wrong 😂😂
Less of aliveness
@@angelaguayo6072 now its more money lol
I love how the Cortex crew are trying to become our shepherds of the mind
One alternative to getting a person to do a task isn't necessarily to trick yourself, but instead find a more pleasant alternative.
Example, exercise. Instead of focusing on regular weightlifting, set a goal to regular play a game with wrist and ankle weights. Like, DDR, and or Saber Beats and or Just Dance. Game is fun, so hard to skip. Time spent weightlifting is more effective then playing a game with light weights: but you're far more likely to actually play a game daily then go travel to a gym.
Example: instead of focusing solely on cutting carbs, find a more pleasant thing that you enjoy but will point you in the direction. So, maybe focus on new ways to cook non-starchy veggies and eat more veggies with every meal. Positive, instead of negative (easier for our minds), and it's phrased and done as something pleasant.
Hmm... I would have to trick myself into believing that it was important enough to do, compared to all the more effective workouts AND compared to all the funner things I could be doing.
Back to this video because as ive found better ways to process my thoughts in therapy and absolve myself of perfectionism mindset its this type of goal tackling that helps me set up the foundarion for change
Thanks! So much!
You. Are. AWESOME!
I never did resolutions for the reasons you pointed out, but this is a good alternative cuz I had failable goals just randomly dotted around

2024: Year of Reconstruction
My time at university is coming to an end, and that is going to fundamentally change both the availability of my time and the freedom I have to choose what comes with it. It could be called *Year of Structure*, but I feel like that fails to define the change that I'm looking to make. Among some changes, I've been openly considering changing my keyboard layout from QWERTY to Dvorak or Colemak. It takes more than simply timing things out, but recognizes the necessity of changing the way things presently are.

Yeah, but that's pricey and likely to be distracting.
When they are empty, people have problems finding buyers so it might be cheaper than other real estate to buy. For the distracting: If you want an office in there, you definetely don't want to keep the storefront as it is, but there are cheap ways to negate that problem.

@@violetnhz Thanks! His videos seemed far and few between, I'd often think he abruptly stopped.
He did in the video about CZcams. He was talking about how long of human attention his videos have taken up and then said his podcasts have taken more when combined.
Idea (haven't watched the full video yet):
Have a meta-theme, a broader theme to base your themes on: for example you could have 2021-2030 be the decade of decisiveness or intentionality and then 2021 be the year of clarity (so as to make better decisions) [edit: or better yet being grounded, considering I spent all of quarantine in my thoughts and on the internet] and winter be the season of journaling (so as to have more clarity).
change of plans: let's make winter the season of watching less content or at least paying attention to the content I watch - this is probably the most important thing I can do to change my life
i wanna have my yearly theme this year be year of interesting, doing and seeing interesting things.
Hey! I accidentally decided to do something similar before I saw your video, and I’m currently doing a year of growth :D
I might make it a decade of growth instead, but we’ll see by next year :)
What do you mean year of growth. What’s the goal.
I love hearing the innocent talking about the future that 2020 holds for them. If I could tell someone which theme to take I would say “work on making crappy things less crap, because your really gonna need it” Oh 2020, you suck.
I watched the whole thing.
It's a mission statement
gold
This concept has always been in my mind. The only thing is I worded it differently. I replaced the word theme with the word purpose. Most people just live their lives with no real purpose besides making enough money to pay the bills for the month. When survival is your only drive in life, you will get dissatisfied very quickly and you will start looking for other things to enhance it. Hence the new years resolution/theme/purpose stuff.
43:00 In 2018 I changed my diet to a WFPB-diet because it promised effortless normal-weight, with a transition without cravings, without calorie counting and with the side-benefit of optimal for prevention of lifestyle diseases. And to me, it completely changed my view on diet in the span of a few months (mostly due to feeling scientifically skeptical of just how awesome it felt), making me frustrated with how much my past self, and people around me, struggle so hard with dieting, when it's SUPER simple if you have the right knowledge. And when I hear about people like Myke who are persistent enough to actually suffer through a low-carb diet for an entire year, for a slight weight loss, and have it be a permanent change, I feel tremendous respect because I could never do that.
From what I've heard, some diets are _very_ helpful to some people, but not others. Our body chemistry varies; but also our tolerances. One thing most diets have in common is, they require me to either like my cooking, or buy $$$ fancy smancy groceries.
@@jpaugh64 There's individual variances of course, but no study would be able to find any statistical significance if we weren't much alike as well. Naturally, your clinical dietitian or doctor will have the opportunity to give you better personal advice. But I don't agree that you need to be a good cook or buy expensive things for WFPB specifically. Unless of course you live in an area where they don't provide healthy fast foods. I confess that there's not much of that where I currently live so I do have to cook myself a lot, but I just cook big enough portions for 5-7 meals and that works for me. But if money is a concern, I've seen guides where people make great meals with outrageously small budgets - at least in the US. If you really want it, you can make it work.
My personal experience with diets is that they were similar to snake oils, i.e. changing all the time, shortsighted and not really very healthy if done in the long-term. Plus many things were advocated by people who had limited medical education at best.
I pick 2020: Year of Enlightenment.
More of that in my life. Everyday. Every moment. Now.
thanks

So y'all aren't fans of SMART goals? Which I suddenly realize are better for [micro]managers than humans.
Mason M I always learned to use these also and they’ve been helpful for me. Might give both a shot though.
I imagine SMART goals are better for specific tasks and challenges that need to be trackable and accounted for. That doesn't have to be the case with lifegoals which we want to insert into your way of life, especially when we often try things without actually knowing if that is what we need or even if we do whether now is the time for us to go for that goal.
But that's what I think and what I need (i.e. try to slowly incorporate certain things into my lifestyle).
The SMART goals are better for the short-term than the long-term. The goal may be relevant to the New Year You, but not to You In March. If it is measurable, then if you don't make the weight or number, you fail, and brains hate the failure. Make a SMART goal for at most a month, make themes for seasons to years.
SMART is better for when you need to defend and modify your ideas together with another co-workers. I don't think they're all bad; but you also can't choose something risky, cutting edge or undefined as a smart goal. (I guess that does limit it to short term.)

To be fair, making changes to your life are six times more likely to succeed if you make them on New Year's, rather than any other time of the year.
Wheres that stat from?
I disagree. If I waited until New Year's, I'd lose interest in the idea. I need to move on something as soon as my brain understands the next step to take, and why it's important to me. People, you don't need to upload AUDIO vlogs with an image at 1080p... The AUDIO quality is damn near the same between 360p and 1080p. Why do you upload unnecessarily huge data that can be done in the shittiest quality ever, and still sound like it does now on the 1080p rendering.
Come on man.... Show some actual common sense intelligence.
smh
