3 hours? You're spoiling us.
Funny story: listening to cortex episodes makes me about 1.6 times as productive compared to music or competing podcasts.
3 hours of geeking out. Love it!
I can FEEL Myke trying to pronounce "sidekick" less like "psychic."
25:18 I basically listen to State of the Apps just to hear Gray squirm in audible disapproval
Don't ever get up this early (6am Pacific) but I have been rewarded
Preach, it's way to cold here in Oregon to be doing this
This is my first Cortex episode!
Yes!!!! Same 🤝
Thoughts while listening:
- Home screens sound like a recipe for distraction 😅
- Task apps - why not use a planner app? I use Morgen...combines calendar with tasks. Also links with Obsidian 😁
- Grey - why not use your to-do app as your notes app for the in between of note to obsidian ? - ah inbox... again for me that is Morgen with due dates instead of planned starts
- Team apps = pain - TRUTH. I use Morgen for time management but Notion for collaborative notes.
- I prefer discord to slack!!!
- Obsidian collaborative sync - why not do a vault in a vault? Vaults are just folders. Have 2 remote vaults, a personal and work (that is what I do)
- 2 hours 30 minutes in, and I just realised the icons match the chapters 🤦♂
- I use Bing AI for the thesaurus, but ChatGPT must be just as good
Imma just listen to it for like 10 days because it will take me that much to finish it
Grey, you did a great job at attempting to articulate the benefits of defining a "note" as a smaller, bite-sized item containing a sentence or few around a particular fact, statement or propostion.
Another benefit I've found from using these style of notes in Obsidian is that these notes can be re-purposed outside of the context you originally created them for. Say I have a note that reads, "Ebbinghaus' forgetting curve illustrates how information moves to long-term memory through repetition at increasingly longer intervals." The most obvious context for this note is in content around hte topic of human memory.
However, I could also use this note in other contexts, such as understanding how scientists study the human brain, neuroscience, study strrategies and techniques, etc. Because these notes are so small, they don't have a fixed context in which they can be applied in. I used to have long notes with headings and subhedings, but that would relegate each piece of information to a particular project or output. If I wanted to access that information in the future, I'd have to search and remember where I originally sud it to find it again and use it as part of a new project.
Anyway, really enjoy the podcast, and the insightful discussions the two of you have. All the beest and keep oding what you do :)
Mike had a cold reading that Memberfall advert.
*patiently waits for someone to post every individual app*
Do you really need that camera there Mike?😂
"Jupiter Totally Lifts, Bro" - Belongs on the Cortex merch store as a shirt
I hopped onto the show notes and I agree with Grey. The aps are not enough. More background variation is required for my brain. Good thing this is Myke's phone and watch instead.
I love the custom button on my Home Screen that turns off all the lights.
I don't really understand why dropbox wouldn't work for your phone. You should be able to open any directory as a vault... I'm using obsidian on my phone, synchronised using syncthing, with no problems.
I love just listening the two of you fundamentally be flabbergasted at how the other's mind is wired.
Love these reviews. Curious what they would think of Sunsama
Why don't you provide screenshots of your Homescreens? Seems so obvious
it's so annoying looking up these mentioned apps and then finding out theyre iOS only. as someone who's on Android, it's really frustrating seeing so many amazing apps that are iOS only
Oftentimes there are alternatives, they just don't know them
More rock. Good rock. Best rock. Obsidian.
For the camera Lock Screen: you can just pull down the notification shade which brings you to the lockscreen without pressing the button or triggering the display. Whenever Apple merged the lockscreen with notifications screen it’s been great
2:16:06 The great betrayal.
So how does Grey check his emails, or open a browser? Does he use search, is it hidden within one of the shortcuts, or is it something else?
It depends on the seaon. Historically, he doesn't check his email at least ever.
1:34:16
Begone THOT
I know he could never do this, but you can just not count the bar weight for a Smith machine. Yes you’re going to be about 20 pounds stronger but you can think about it as you’re not using any accessory stabilizing muscles so it’s probably a wash.
2:09:31 I do not !
Saturnday: All of the days of the week are actually named after the planets. Most of the make sense in their Spanish translation.
• Monday = Moon (Lunes in Spanish = Luna)
• Tuesday (Martes) = Mars
• Wednesday (Miércoles) = Mercury
• Thursday (Jueves) = Jupiter
• Friday (Viernes) = Venus
• Saturday (Sábado) = Saturn
• Sunday (Domingo [used to be Sun's Day but they changed it to Lord's Day] ) = Sun
Isn't English a mix of god's names? Like Wednesday = Wotan's day = Odin's day, that the Romans considered to be Mercury. Then you have Tyr's day -> Tuesday (Tyr is god of War, so he's equivalent to the Romans' Mars) and so on and so forth
@@joaogui1yes, that's correct. In spanish it's named after the celestial bodies/Roman gods, while in english some of those names are the same, and some are named after nordic figures
RE: Obsidian: Just want to say that you can use symlinks to have the same folder/file in different vaults. Although, you'll want to keep a similar folder structure in both vaults so links don't break
Edit: Vault in a vault is a good idea!
yeahhh I was waiting this :))
Wow 😮
"Productivity".
it shows the running time of this episode is 3 HOURS and 12 minutes?
That's longer than a Lord of the Rings movie!
With no graphics so far?
Why not put the images in the video? It's literally why video exists.
GreyJay?
Fourth.
I don't use apple, so I guess none of this is relevant to me?
"home screen is like an app now"
Me: looks at my android "hasn't it always been an app?"
