    The practical effects in movies like Blade Runner or The Thing look absolutely amazing in 4K. People always think modern CGI is better, but CGI is always rendered in 2K.

      I think we've largely fallen out of love with computer animation owing to its overuse. But there are occasions when it is completely invisible because it's appropriate, well done and seamless to the rest of the film. We saw Death on the Nile in 70mm a couple of days ago and the computer effects shots stood out a mile owing to the obvious low quality. Such a shame but there was no other realistic way of achieving the shots they wanted these days. John.

    I spent a good decade shooting on Super8 and editing all in High Def so it blows my mind that in all that time I never came across anyone with an 8mm print of a feature film. Until your channel I had no clue such releases were created.
    Escape From New York is a pretty darned good film, one my friends and I saw numerous times on cable and VHS in the 80's. We always wondered why it looked so muddy, dark and cramped. That first widescreen laserdisc was a revelation. As I do not have a Blu-Ray of the film the 4k is likely the correct choice.

      Yes, I get the impression you'd enjoy watching some of these Super 8 features with me... and the 4Ks for that matter. Escape From New York is just as good on Blu-ray, or at least it is on our little home screens - might be a different kettle of fish on a 40 footer.

      With a budget 4K video projector it is possible to re-create the cinema at home Andre so if you really want to splash out you would be able to imagine you're in the cinema back in 1981. Get the fabulous 4K of John Carpenter's The Thing as well and you'll be able to imagine your in a cinema in 1982 too... not that many others were in the cinema on the day I went to see it all those years ago. Hard to believe that such a masterpiece could be such a failure at the box office but I suppose it seemed a bit too over the top for most people back then. However you watch your 4K purchase, have fun.

    I really, really enjoy your videos. The amount of information, backstory, format comparisons, and your obvious love for films have had me watching your videos on movies that I usually wouldn’t have had an interest in. I used to work as a projectionist (among other movie theater duties) back in the 80s. So, I also have a lot of fun reminiscing about older films and using 35mm projectors. What a great time we’re in, now, to have all these movies in amazing quality in such a compact format at home.

    • @moviecollector5920

      Thank you Brian. Film has been an interest and a hobby from the age of two I think. If you've seen my Super 8 Film Gauge video you'll have seen my passion for film came about.
      It is indeed amazing that we're able to enjoy videos at home that are often just as good as the films we saw in the cinema. But I do find it a terrible shame that video was foisted on cinemas before it was ready. Video has reached heights I wouldn't have thought possible just 15 or 20 years ago but sadly a lot of cinemas are having to make do with low quality 2K video projectors today because they can't afford the latest equipment and have to buy second hand just to keep going. After this pandemic cinemas are going to need a way to entice people back and I think 70mm in as many theatres as possible is the way to do it. But I'm probably dreaming there. John.

      Thanks so much for the thoughtful reply. Yes, I really enjoyed your Super 8 video and the origins of your love for film. I’m a couple years younger than you but I think we grew up enjoying a lot of the same films. I hadn’t realized that theaters were forced into digital before they were ready or capable. Very interesting. I haven’t threaded a 35mm projector in over thirty years but feel like I could manage just from muscle memory. Ha ha. Great times. Great memories. Thanks! Keep up the great work. 👍

    I watched Escape from New York many many times, when I was a kid. Back in the VHS & CRT-TV days, I always wondered, why they painted him the number "2" on his belly in the Ringfight-Scene, as his opponent didn´t have a painting... I thought it was a kind of insult, not beeing number 1, beeing a loser or so. Last month I saw it in HD and had to jump up from my seat: After 30 Years, I noticed, that Kurt Russel got a cobra tattoo on his belly! As an adult, now I wonder wether there is a deeper meaning in the fact, that the cobra seems to sneak out of his pants...
    Also Adrienne Barbeau´s scenes are worth watching it in HD, if you know what I mean...
    Maybe VHS-Videoquality was also the reason, why this movie here in Germany has the Name "Die Klapperschlange / The Rattlesnake", but maybe they where only dumb, who knows.
    Next to this VHS-tape was the tape of "The Fog" and i needed several attempts to watch the film from beginning to end and it gave me much sleepless nights.

It's mainly films of the 60s and 70s but has been going so long now (over 15 years I think) that's it's expanded somewhat from its original concept. Hi John. I have very much enjoyed spending all of yesterday afternoon and most of this morning watching your reviews. I like your style, your clear love of the topic, and the enthusiasm. I was too young to have Super 8, and indeed until watching you videos I didn't even know it was a format that had 'real' films released on it. I thought it was entirely for the amateur filmmaker or for family films 'back in the day'. I was quite astonised to learn there was a format from the 70's which allowed you to watch actual films on actual film in your own home. I have already started looking at projectors, although by the time I have done my research I suspect I will find myself priced out of the market by the time it comes to buying the films I like. If you haven't already done one would be prepared to do a video about your setup? I'd like to see the equipment you use, why and how you use it, how to preserve Super 8 film. This has really piqued my interest, even though I suspect it will not be a collection I will be able to start myself. Thank heavens for 4K for those of us on slimmer budgets! So, how about showing us around your cinema? I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy it. Best wishes, Lee

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 3 lety +2

      Lee, I've seen your next comment so I won't have to point you to the cinema tour! Take a look at www.bfcc.biz and have a poke around in there, most notably the Independent 8 pages where you'll get an idea of what's still out there. Barry has a few rather nice Super 8 projectors in right now but start with one of the cheaper ones rather than the Elmo GS1200. Also, take a look on the Super 8 Links page and most notably Classic Home Cinema. Phil and Denise Sheard run that business and they actually have a movie shop in Cleethorpes so a trip to the seaside one day perhaps.
      Pre-1982 film tends to fade as little was printed on low fade stock prior to then. But the old cut-downs from the seventies are still good fun to run and if they're fading a little to pink some sort of a pale blue filter in front of the projection lens can correct them so they still look pretty good. It was the ability to reproduce the cinema in your home that always fascinated me and even though all I could ever really run to was the odd 400ft reel (around 17 minutes) it was so exciting to be able to watch the best parts from a favourite film. You need to consider the only other way - after the cinema - was to wait until a film was on television. There was no home video market and when that did come it, the quality was complete and utter crap.
      If I can help point you in the right direction please let me know. You'll pick up a lot from the BFCC site.
      John.

      @@moviecollector5920 THanks John, that's a very informative reply. I think I'm going to have to start thinking logistics. My first stumbling block may actually be lack of space so I will need to see if I have the distance for a projector in my 3bed semi. The next item to tick of the list would be discussing it with my wife since it would require some tolerance on her part. She enjoys films like most people, but is not as fanatical as people like me. I'll have a think over those 2 points over the next few weeks and see it this (getting a super 8 projector) is a possibility for me. I guess there is always digital projection to consider as well. Thanks John, do keep making these videos, they are great. Best wishes, Lee

      @moviecollector5920  Před 3 lety +1

      @@leehawkins616 If you have a white wall anywhere Lee you won't need any extra space to project film or video. A Super 8 projector only needs to be put up on a stand or a table and project onto the wall. It's jolly good fun to do that and even though I got into the black velvet masking and all the rest of it, sometimes I simply put up a cheapie Super 8 projector and run one of those old 400ft reels on the wall. Such nostalgia.

I realize it wasn't quite Star Trek as we all knew it and was rather spoiled by some poor new characters but just look at the beauty of the visuals - unbelievable at times and better than what is being done today in computers. The 'Dystraflex' camera was a large part of the reason why those special effects sequences were so impressive of course. John.

You're the second person who has now told me that Arrow did a 4K scan of The Thing so I'll keep an eye out on future visits to CEX and other places to see if I can snap one up. I suspect a 4K release will appear before that happens though but it's possible the Arrow Blu-ray will look better on our little home screens knowing what we now know about 4K.
      The Italian Job on Blu-ray is exceptional. I don't think it was shot on 70mm but it looks just as good as 70mm films transferred to Blu-ray and 4K in places. I don't understand how the negative survived so well but maybe it was a Technicolor dye transfer neg which doesn't fade.

    Hello John.
    Another video from your´s that I enjoyed immensely. You have such love for everything film and it shows:) You are the real deal and not like so many other shallow dullards.
    I worship Carpenter and I have all his films on either BD or DVD - including his made-for-telly movies ('Someone´s...' & 'Elvis').
    I saw both 'The Fog' and 'EFNY' at the movies, as well as 'The Thing' and everything that came out after that. I feel he somewhat declined artistically after (circa) 'They Live' but still made some decent movies well into the nineties. 'The Ward' was a return to form and old school Carpenter filmmaking but now he seems to just focus on his music. I guess he - like myself - got/is sick of WOKE-Hollywood and its (with a few exceptions) lousy scripts.
    Keep up the good work..rock on!

      John Carpenter's films are almost always very repeatable. There is something about the fantasy worlds he creates that makes me want to revisit them again and again. They Live was another great Carpenter film but that and Prince of Darkness were not the success hoped for and I suppose it was harder to find work after that. Quite often a director's best work is at the beginning of a career and I think that - in many cases - is because the director stops listening to the people around him as much as he/she once did. I don't think that's the case with Mr. Carpenter but I expect crew members were increasingly in awe and didn't speak up as much as they once would.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 3 lety +1

      Sync' pulse I have is a 50hz box of tricks that locks the Elmo GS1200 projector into 25fps. PAL DVD is 25fps so once you have a Super 8 feature synchronized to the image from the DVD (or any other PAL video source) it stays in synch until there is a difference such as at reel changes where the film print usually has a couple of extra frames. Fortunately the GS1200 comes with a couple of adjustment buttons so you can speed up or slow down briefly to get fully back in synch again. It's all jolly good fun and meant that some of us could get the closest experience to cinema in the home many years ago by combining the best image quality available with the best sound. Re-recording the Super 8 feature was usually plenty good enough though. Recording a film you would then project if from resulting in good reproduction of matrixed four channel Dolby Stereo (AKA ProLogic).

The only thing I can recommend on how to improve is to find a suitable video camera - make sure it's got a microphone input though as most only have built in microphones. A video camera will give you the options of cutaways but that will require a bit more video editing of course. You're not the only one to recommend the Arrow release. I'll hang on for a while now just in case a full 4K UHD disc of The Thing is forthcoming.

    Just asking are there any 4K blu rays that you think look as good as the 35mm print if not better

      I don't have the 35mm prints to compare them against but I reckon Jaws, Blade Runner and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind are just like looking at 35mm cinema release prints.

    Is it me needing to get glasses 🙄 I'm just not seeing this 4k HDR jump over my Blu rays.
    Is it my equipment?
    I have a 1 year old 55" Samsung QLed and my 4k player is a Xbox S. I don't know John am i just looking for Quality that isn't there 🤷‍♂️

    • @moviecollector5920

      I think many 4K enthusiasts have concluded that the difference in quality over Blu-ray on these small screens just isn't there Mark. HDR makes the difference on most occasions but with Escape From New York even that didn't tip it over the top this time. But all systems vary and what looks outstanding on one may not look so good on another. 55 inch will equate to about four feet wide and I think we're going to have to start thinking in terms of ten feet and up to start picking out the extra quality. As I said in the video, I think I need a 30 foot screen! We have projected 70mm on our 24ft screen at the BFCC and although absolutely fabulous, the difference over 35mm was not that pronounced at that size. In fact, we've projected some modern 16mm that looked comparatively good and even the best Super 8 prints weren't too far off. Blow the image up another 20 feet though and we'd all see a clear difference. But it might be worth looking into a genuine 4K player as they're not that expensive really and must surely be better than a games console... although I don't know that, just seems logical.

      It would help if you have a much bigger screen

      @@moviecollector5920 I was thinking about getting a bigger TV but my room is small at 12by12 feet and we watch a lot standard definition TV which as you know looks terrible on the bigger tvs so thought the 55" was a good compromise. As for the 4k player John i always believed one 4k player was the same as all 4k players 🤷‍♂️ I'm probably wrong though. I remember getting a stand alone Blu ray player and oh my god the noise of it! It was like a hover and someone told me the playstation at the time was really quiet so that's why i stayed with the game consoles.
      A Thing review would be nice by the way 😊🤞

      I too really like the sequel. I suppose Escape From L.A. is a bit too old school for the audience it was aimed at upon release and so it didn't do very well for that reason.

    I realise you are nostalgic but you can't say the effects in this are comparable to today. There is no complexity to the shots at all they are all very flat and night time shots are very easy compared to daylight shots. I do enjoy your videos though. Very informative but you are lost in your blind nostalgia at times lol

      I appreciate what you are saying sagelight. I don't very often care that much for digital effects these days though so I think we're all allowed to get nostalgic for the skills of the past. Escape From New York certainly wasn't the best effects movie of all time but it's amazing what they achieved with so little.

      @@sagelight7777 I think the one I've enjoyed the most in recent years is Interstellar which had fabulous practical effects but they used the computer to compliment them where necessary and perfectly. It proves the marriage between old and new is best in my view but I realize not every film is going to have a big enough budget to do it. Darned interesting subject for us film enthusiasts to discuss though.

      @@moviecollector5920 interstellar was amazing in its use of practical effects as all nolans films are. He only uses cgi when he has to and its always flawless. The main reason for cgi looking fake these days I believe is breaking the laws of physics with the camera. If you keep the cg camera in a realistic position and stick to the basic rules of where the camera can be and see it makes for realistic shots. The marvel movies suffer greatly I feel for this. I would like to know your thoughts on the in camera process used in the manderlorian tv series. For me that is the perfect marriage of the medium for today with a virtual set moving in tandem with the camera and characters with motion control and everything in camera.
