Thank you for your kind words coolcicada. I'm currently putting things together for a review of the 4K UHD Blu-ray release of 'Spartacus' so you can expect information on the Super Technirama 70 filming process in that one. Should be an interesting little project. Might also be an excuse to mention the exceptional Blu-ray of 'Zulu' which was filmed in the same format and possibly looks even better.

It surprised me how good it looked when it first came on the screen. Not perfect all the way through but obviously, perceptibly superior to the Blu-ray from the same master which is unusual. If you get it Roy, please let me know your opinion because all our systems are different and seem to give variable results at times.

Good to have you with me Alex. I've been playing cinemas at home for over 40 years now and I have no intention of ever growing up. I'll get old but I'll never grow up! What I've established since starting this channel a few months ago is that our systems do vary and what looks exceptional on one may only look good on another. I advise everyone to turn off any digital processing their players, projectors or televisions carry out because that could be the reason some great 4K discs (and Blu-rays probably) get messed up.
      Take care,
      John.

Another fine 9 minutes John, they're always interesting. I saw the Thing at a cinema in London and was stunned by it. The theatre was so damn sombre when it had finished... just think the audience was worn out.

I saw The Thing at the Newbury ABC and I seem to recall it was practically empty for that showing. I thought it was fantastic and I find it hard to believe that it was so underrated for so long. I was a horror fan I suppose so I appreciated all the gruesome, gory effects but it seems they were too much for lesser mortals at the time.

His films were ahead of their time Paul. I saw The Thing at the cinema and thought I'd just witnessed a masterpiece. Unfortunately there were only four or five other people in the cinema with me so it was years before it was accepted for the work of art that it unquestionably is. Prince of Darkness in a blacked out cinema on a huge screen was frightening. There aren't many horror movies that give me the chills but this one succeeded. It has a great atmosphere to it and that sucked me in.

With the Blu-Ray transfers from 4k. From what I hear. I'm no expert .But I do understand that the quality is effected by transfer process and the equipment is not always the best. This includes the Discs are many times sub par. This past year and the past few months with bad discs being released like Donnie Darko. Oversight seams to be lacking. Money 💰 issues I'm sure have effected the cost cutting to discs as well. From processing problem s to cheaper discs being bought in bulk??? These questions need to be considered . We in general think everything is the same everywhere. In reality their differing levels of quality with product . With product with a rating from top-mid-low. Being around for 54 years this stands out. I can see the quality come through even on the CZcams video. This is impressive in it own right. Then you have others movies I have seen do not stand up to this quality. From what I see this a master quality disc you use to test TV for how well it works in color processing. This movie is Top of the Line and it shows. My rambling is over.Great Video🙂😎

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 3 lety

Hello again Stephen. I'm in quite a good position to be able to clarify some of what you've said because I've been releasing documentary films on disc for the past 15 years. I've always looked to use master discs that have gone through soak tests that pass a 100 year life but as the years have gone on that has not always been possibly due to shortages. However, regardless of the discs used (either by replication or duplication i.e. pressing or burning) the video on the disc looks identical. This means that the quality of the image and sound is all down to the quality of the original camera and sound recording equipment combined with how well the final cut has been exported to a master file and then mastered for disc. Whilst I have not yet attempted a 4K release (and probably never will given that disc sales are about 25% of what they were 15 years ago) I have done Blu-ray. The amount of time and effort required to get everything as perfect as possible is a massive job. And irrespective of the efforts I put in and the experience I have there are always going to be the occasional problem. Some players out there will complain and create image stagger but fortunately the mastering programmes I use are 99.8% successful. I have seen a customer play one of my bigger selling releases that never had a single reported problem and his player was staggering the image to the point of unwatchable. So whereas the Arrow Films release apparently has a reported problem from a large proportion of purchasers it is possible that the final product went through all the usual tests back at the mastering facility and it simply didn't throw up a problem. Could it be there is one make of player that is incompatible and the master was not checked on that brand of player?
      John.

I would have seen it when it was in cinemas but it didn't get much of a release as I recall, or maybe it was banned from the UK or just not popular enough to warrant a theatrical release. I think you have to see these films as a youngster otherwise you get older and then don't fancy them any longer. I saw some horrible films in the early 1980s and one that I'd never watch again is Cannibal Holocaust. It wasn't exactly an enjoyable film but that was the point at the time. It don't suppose anything like that could be made today.

I don't really do television any longer - gave up about 12 or 13 years ago. But our screen is masked down from ten feet to about eight and a half feet right now. That's width and not diagonal which I have never fully understood. A 65 inch telly is probably about four and a half feet wide and I don't consider that suitable for watching a film although of course I watched films on much smaller tellies years ago when there was no viable alternative. With home video projection being so good now I can't imagine I'll ever go back. The quality really has astonished me.

Outside of the amazing opening sequence this film leaves me cold. In fact, I quite dislike it. But hey, we can't love everything we see. :-) Carpenter has always been hit or miss with me. THEY LIVE is a great B movie that I thoroughly enjoyed at the cinema. One of his films that deserved better was Vampires, which was pretty much unreleased in American cinemas due to Carpenter having fallen out of favor with the studios after one too many box office duds. VAMPIRES has been released on Blu-Ray and is generally thought of as being an OK release. They likely come from a very late 90's 1080p transfer. Perhaps one day someone will pay for a new 4k scan, but I doubt it.

Don't see them. I think many people get a little too obsessed with modern multiplex cinemas which don't have anything other than a screen in a black room. Our little home cinema isn't like that. It's actually a room in the house and most of the time there is light pouring through the window meaning we can use the room as part of our day to day life. Curtains and black masking ensure the screen is separated from anything on the wall and we like having some of the cinema memorabilia we've collected over the years on our home cinema wall. We don't have anywhere else suitable to put them so it's just as well. John.

I think the power of Prince of Darkness is the threat of the villain in the glass jar. The menace builds and builds. It's a simple film but it just seems to work. With regard to They Live, funnily enough we were watching 'Cloud Atlas' last night and there was Keith David. Haven't seen him in much over the years so it was good to see him again in a 2012 film. is the 4k version restored (at least cleaned up of dirt/specks/smudges/hair in the gate etc.)? i'm surprised carpenter is your fav director. his best film for me is the thing remake, and strangely, remake of village of the damned. happy new year! the thing 4k restored should be beautiful.

    • @moviecollector5920

Other collectors tell me the Arrow Blu-ray of The Thing is exceptional so we might find there is no improvement with a 4K scan of that one. But with Prince of Darkness the "restoration" did remove all the dirt and everything else - or at least I can't recall being distracted by anything like that - so it is very clean.
I too like 'Village of the Damned'. 'Halloween' is my favourite though even if I think 'The Thing' is a better film. 'Starman' is up there too. There there's 'Escape From New York' and 'Assault on Precinct 13' so with all those exceptional films that is why I say he's probably my favourite film maker.

I will see if I fancy Tenet though and pick it up sometime. 'Halloween' has a unique atmostphere to it and a nice personal history for me.
