The difference is very surprising, I don’t think I’ll be buying from studio canal anymore. Is the scream factory howling a BD 100 as well? Probably going to have to double dip on that and all of the carpenter releases if they are. I don’t get why any of these companies wouldn’t be using a BD 100, they need to stop trying to cut corners. The market is so niche and their ability to cheap out and have it go unnoticed is less likely. Thanks for all your hard work!

As a relative newbie to blu ray, Im only now understanding why releases are different, even at UHD/4k.
I can now understand why collectors spend $100's having multiple versions of the same film.
Please keep doing these comparisons between SF and Studio Canal and the like. It helps a lot cos due to the cost I have to be picky with what version I choose.

I also own the Studio Canal of the Fog and found that the black levels were too high leading to a lot of black crush. I owned both Flash Gordon Studio Canal and Arrow releases and found it was the same with that and I could compare them side by side. I agree it seems that studio canal does the original masted and other companies then seem to improve on it. Just yesterday I picked up Friday the 13th and found it was waaaay too dark compared to the old Blu Ray. And they're both done by Paramount really disappointed in that release you might want to check it out. Good luck with your health issues, I've had long covid for over two and half years now so I've been going through a lot of health issues also. Thanks again for these videos there the best on CZcams.
To be upfront, I think so far it’s been really nice getting these re-worked studio canal releases from Scream Factory, almost makes me want to wait to buy anymore Studio Canal releases till I find out if Scream/Shout Factory are going to do a release later on lol!!! 🤣 I am starting to feel like Studio Canals 4K releases are just ultimately better done releases by Scream/ Shout Factory!

I recently picked up the Shout Factory release and I find the Blu-ray (4k transfer) looks better than the 4k (4k transfer).
It's apparent in the opening scene.on the 4k disc In the shots with the old guy telling the tale, there is a lot of grain, flashing and a weird black flashing artifact along the top edge of the picture. Mostly though there is a lot of grain in a lot of places in the 4k disc. I don't see anything out of the ordinary with the Blu-ray as far as artifact, flashing or excessive grain. To me, it almost outweighs the positives of a boost in resolution. Not that is bad, it's watchable, I just find the Blu-ray in the same set much better.

Hey James I’ve just bought this release and I’m going to get the Escape From New York release also but I’m wondering which is the best version of They Live ? Is the collectors edition an upgrade on the studio canal release also ? I had Studio Canal version I think the Scream Factory looks better....
There is also an Italian 4K UHD release from Eagle Pictures '4Kult' line of 4K releases. Don't know about 'The Fog' but the 4Kult releases of 'Total Recall' and 'Apocalypse Now' - Theatrical version only- better compression and improved audio (Dialog glitch fixed) have the best picture quality of any versions that have been released globally.
What does the main menu look like?
Is the steel book better then the other shout factory one ?
In the UK we only get the Studio Canal 4K version..that lacks many of the special features and no Dolby Atmos..

How is the restored blu-ray?
Getting the Shout Factory 4k. Double check on your other copies they may contain special features the New disc does not. Many times this has happened intentionally or by losing the extra features because it was not stored correctly.
Note when Adriane Barbeau goes to Studio at tha lighthouse it actually set on stage because it doesn't exist in lighthouse really.

On the Shout factory steelbook is that 4k disc not done by studio canal as stated on the J card
The Fog on 4k from shout factory is way far better on picture and dolby atmos sound..Studio Canal version from UK is not great in dolby vision..alot of Grain on studio Canal and no Grain at all from shout factory love the dolby vision from shout factory..
And the sound in atmos is brilliant..only get dts hd master audio 5.1 from studio canal...so Shout factory definitely wins for Me on 4k from usa.....
Good review my only reccomendatuon is to list the price you got them, bc for me thats a big determining factor for example I got the John Carpenter 4 film set which means I have the studio canal version but it was only $12.50 for me to own the fog when the scream factory version is like $30

The Dolby Atmos soundtrack seem a little bright to me it could just be me
Honestly I feel that true 4k releases are hard to achieve with older films. Criterion is the gold standard when it comes to film releases. Shout is hit or miss, sometimes they do well ,others its barely above average. Props for them getting the OG mono audio, but their compression is always terrible, frankly their CS reps are rude and this company always expects people to kiss their ass lol not directed at you, but just the way they carry themselves.
I understand it all comes from the material they have and the kind of restoration they do. But I feel many companies are using DNR and other artificial methods to "improve" a film and in this process ruin the original vision. Paramounts 4k line/Universals line are average at best, shame really, these companies need a proper restoration team and not just use some software to tweak things and call it day. I got Fatal Attraction and while its an upgrade, it's not what it could be, . These 4k's start at 30 or more and we should be paying 19 at the most, it feels like a Blu Ray Plus if that was a thing lol.
With a premium player, cables and TV it will upscale any blu ray and make it look as good as it can,
the studio canal 4K had a pcm 2.0 mono. Scream factory just presented it as a dts hd 2.0 mono while adding a stereo and atmos mix ontop of the image tweaks.
Studio canal also a feature the scream release doesn’t have listed.
The fog is the best John carpenter film.
Which features is the scream missing? James said there was nothing missing.
@@gusamoretti8520 As thecatdrums3 stated in his comments above, he doesn’t actually own the new Scream/Shout Factory 4K UHD release & he is looking to buy it hopefully in the near future! So he misspoke & he doesn’t actually own both of them to compare them or to answer your questions!
My Serpico Steelbook Import is PCM too. Maybe Studio Cancal just does that with older movies sometimes?
@@bigsteve8921 most UK companies will present audio as lpcm or pcm.
Arrow has many releases that have done that. Usually depends on the material and time they have to present the audio they have access to.
Paramount & WB have been doing Dolby digital presentations while Sony have done what scream does by having them as dts-hd presentations.
It’s still a lossless audio format so not as bad as the Dolby digital tracks other companies have. I personally like pcm/lpcm since originally that was what many films were presented as for home viewing on laserdisc.
@@InSearchofPhysicalMedia all of the on disc content is the same. Missing was an audio interview that Jamie Lee did which the cd had on it .
