  • Video tutorial on how to remove the interior dashboard vents in a VW MK4 Golf. This tutorial includes the driver side, passenger side and center HVAC vents. In order to remove the dash vents on a Jetta or Bora MK4, it takes a slightly different procedure. This procedure can be used in order to replace/repair the vent, cleaning purposes, if you're thinking about making any modifications, or upgrading your Golf style vents. Also included is how to remove the headlight switch, dimmer switch, hazard light switch, rear window defroster switch, and false switch caps. This particular tutorial was done on a 2004 Volkswagen Golf.

    Tools/Supplies Needed:
    -flat (standard) screwdriver
    -electrical tape
    -T20 torx screwdriver
    Procedure:
    -first start by removing the driver and center movable vents by using a flat (standard) screwdriver with electrical tape wrapped on the tip prying them out
    -next remove the headlight switch by pushing the button in, then rotating clockwise, and pulling straight out
    -disconnect the electrical connector on the headlight switch
    -to remove the dimmer switch, using a flat (standard) screwdriver, slowly pry around the outer edge of the switch and work it out
    -once removed, disconnect the electrical connector from the rear
    -now remove the vent by pulling while wiggling out
    -you maybe able to grab that tang and pull back in order to make the vent removal easier
    -remove the two T20 torx screws from the driver side vent
    -one screw is by the duct opening and the other is behind the headlight switch location
    -moving onto the center vent, remove the two T20 torx screws which were behind the vent diffusers
    -pull out vent assembly and disconnect any electrical connectors for switch where necessary
    -some vehicles are equipped with headed seats or traction control, but rear window defroster and hazard lights are standard
    -switches in center vent assembly are easiest to be removed once the vent is remove, that way you can gain access from behind
    -to remove the passenger vent, it is not required to remove the diffuser
    -tilt the diffuser, grab onto it and then wiggle the vent and pull straight back
    -installation in reverse

    I'm getting ready to change my head lamp switch and saw this video and made it very clear that it's an easy switch. VW was going to charge me $230.00 for the switch and installation. I found the switch for just over a hundred and will install it simply with a twist. Thanks for the savings!!!!!

    @DGISID I believe you would have to cut into the dimmer wire which is located right behind the headlight switch and run the rest of the wires for the illuminating vents from there.

    The plastic ducts are fairly smooth in the inside, so I wouldn't think it would be gathering too much dust. Not to mention the MKIV also has a filtered heating and air conditioning system which is right at the start of the supply vent, therefore not much can enter from the exterior air. But if you wanted to clean them, I'm sure you can use a long foam flexible brush to clean in the ducts once you remove the vents from the dashboard.

    You might be able to go to the dealership and they can order them separately. Or you can also try a local wrecking yard and they might be able to sell you them separately. Lastly you could try a hardware store (Lowes has a great selection for misc items), they may carry something similar which will work too.

    What is not mentioned is that on the larger vent pivot is a tiny plastic cap/bush which can sometimes fall off...If you lose it,your vent will not hold it's position in the casing.FIRST close all the vents in case the cap falls off and rolls into the air ducts (doesn't apply to passenger side)2nd tilt each vent downwards.3rd grasp the top of the vent firmly(side to side) between finger and thumb,push outward on one side of casing with other thumb and ease out slowly from that side.NO TOOLS!

    I have the same set up on my 2001 Jetta TDI. I have noticed over the past year that my vents; especailly defrost, seems to be clogged. Their seems to be some foam/filter particals that blow out. The pieces seem to be dryrotted. Is there a way to clean out the vent lines once i removed the vent?

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  Před 10 lety

      Unfortunately there really isn't much you can do, unless you're willing to disassemble the entire dash which is very work intensive. Sounds like those foam pieces must be from your cabin filter. You might be able to get a small attachment for a vacuum and feed it into the vents to help clean some of it out. Be sure to check your cabin filter though.

    Bro you see the vents up on the dash close to the windscreen. Two coins slipped in and now they make a lot of sound when i drive my car. Any idea how I can get them out or where they would be ? I tried pulling out the plastic vent and checking around couldn't see anything but it sounds like it's up somewhere. Help would be much appreciated

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  Před 9 lety

      Abdullah Jalees Most likely they've falling to the base of the system, possibly where the heater core is. There might be a small hatch or vent you can remove to peak inside. Some coins are also magnetic and you might be able to insert a magnet on a piece of string or a mechanic's style magnetic tool to retrieve them.

    Can anyone help me I have a 1992 Nissan Sentra SE and on the center air vents the knob that individually opens and closes air flow for that vent does not do anything (at 1:15 the knob in between the two center air vents it is in the same exact position on my car) the ones on the other vents work but not on the center one. I was wondering if you knew how to fix this? Is it a disconnected cable that I can get to by removing the air vents?

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  Před 8 lety

      Quite possibly the linkage is broken and would need to be repaired. I've heard of this happening on other vehicles but not a Nissan Sentra specifically. The mechanisms tend to be made of plastic and will become brittle over the years. It's best to remove it and then inspect for any possible causes. Don't forget to subscribe :)
