  • In the first days of 2017, a mysterious online player defeated dozens of top professionals on go sites in Asia. “Master” - the latest version of the AlphaGo AI that had defeated Lee Sedol in March 2016 -- achieved a staggering 60 consecutive wins against many former and current world go champions. In this series, Michael Redmond 9P, hosted by American Go E-Journal Managing Editor Chris Garlock and produced by Stephen Hu, focuses on the key points of each game in brief videos, which will be expanded upon for Volume 2 of AlphaGo to Zero: The Complete Games.

If you ever needed some encouragement: please, go on showing these historic so important games. They never stop to amaze me: how different and how effective these new ideas are. It is like coming out of the dark woods of fairy tales into the light fields of facts and sound ideas. The other amazing fact is, that opening play is so solid and relatively simple, where the fight in the middle game becomes so fierce and complicated. AI doesn’t know the difference, but my guess is that ignoring some “sente” moves makes the game bigger, certainly for us, humans.

Don't really think we need Chris Garlock in this series. No offence thou. The only thing he says is the phrase in the beginning of each video. And he seems a bit tired.

I think Chris is absolutely essential. He manages to get the best out of Micheal, that's no small feat.

^ This. Chris is an excellent host and a true friend who can interact with Michael. When I started watching these videos, his perspective was really helpful because I could relate a lot more to those "what the heck is going on?!?" moments. :D

Without Chris, Michael's commentary would be tuned to a higher level; this would diminish lower level kyus' understanding of these games. Although, there would more to take away for the higher level kyus and dan players. That said the book dives into a very detailed analysis of these games! Plus this level of commentary is perfect for morning coffee!

Let Chris be Chris. Great way to show off the trophies in the back. Great series.
