In the first days of 2017, a mysterious online player defeated dozens of top professionals on go sites in Asia. “Master” - the latest version of the AlphaGo AI that had defeated Lee Sedol in March 2016 -- achieved a staggering 60 consecutive wins against many former and current world go champions. In this series, Michael Redmond 9P, hosted by American Go E-Journal Managing Editor Chris Garlock and produced by Stephen Hu, focuses on the key points of each game in brief videos, which will be expanded upon for Volume 2 of AlphaGo to Zero: The Complete Games.

This is very great analysis as usual. I wish you guys would use headphones to remove the echo from each others audio, it would skyrocket the production value for almost no effort. Thanks for listening and all you’ve taught me about go.

Ah, so this is where the previous fuseki problem came from. Blacks attach was really interesting as well

The variation at 8:28, the time controls are surely too tight for a human to be able to fully read out the options here? I dunno, I’m a relatively weak player but I’d need 10 minutes (and then I’d play a bad move because amateur but... 😂(

In the variation for Black's move at E11, the reading that makes it work is actually not so deep. Maybe he thought he was making eye-space with E11 (creating a potential clamp at B11) and simply missed the White move at E12 which took away Black's eyes and worked well with the following move at F14 that created a threat on the top. Superficially White E12 looks like bad shape and could have been a blind spot for the human player.

@@MichaelRedmondsGoTV Oh I meant reading out that w cannot instantly cut if b tenukis. It seems like b must play a move like e11 or spend a lot of time reading variations where you don’t play e11. I was astonished when I saw if b plays something around g8 instead of e11 then w cannot cut starting with d11.

If I recall correctly the old alpha go gave white A higher winning percentage from the beginning, not black. Has this changed with the new version?

Modern programs with the networks still like White with 7.5 pts komi, but some of them can calculate for 6.5 points, in which case they like Black.
