Biographies researched by Stephen Hu
In the first days of 2017, a mysterious online player defeated dozens of top professionals on go sites in Asia. “Master” - the latest version of the AlphaGo AI that had defeated Lee Sedol in March 2016 -- achieved a staggering 60 consecutive wins against many former and current world go champions. In this series, Michael Redmond 9P, hosted by American Go E-Journal Managing Editor Chris Garlock and produced by Stephen Hu, focuses on the key points of each game in brief videos, which will be expanded upon for Volume 2 of AlphaGo to Zero: The Complete Games.

Regarding E18: Your theory is that AlphaZero style AIs don't care about 60 vs 55% does not seem quite right. It is only in the case of near sure wins and losses that they get a bit weird. It seems more likely that AI cares more about the forcing moves and aji given by the extra liberties after connecting, or slightly misevaluates the potential capturing race in the corner.
Checking with KataGo, E18 is a consistently high rated move:
KataGo 15 block: 36.9% policy on connecting at E18, and likes E18 for score/win rate even at 50k visits, sometimes switching to G14, but extremely close.
KataGo 40 block/s5.8G (strongest distributed model): Policy for E18 even higher at 47%, wants to initially play E18 F16 F18 G18 before leaving the corner situation for later, but after searching settles on G15 F16 G12, but again small differences.
Awesome review as always.
Thank you for continuing this excellent series!
I love the series Michael!
I don't think I would have been able to ignore that move the way AlphaGo did if it had been played against me. This reminds me of how Sai had an important discussion with Hikaru regarding having to play tenuki sometimes instead of responding defensibly to every threat your opponent makes.
Excellent video as always. Pity about the audio issues on Michael's end. (I realize this was probably recorded quite a while ago. Perhaps you should include a comment in the description indicating you are aware of the issue.)
Let's GOOOO! 🤩
You microphone is not on top today Michael. No biggie but worth looking into. 👍🏻
