Rob, I love that even though this is a paid promotion you are not afraid of speaking about the things you don't like, it adds credibility to your videos and not many other channels ever talk about this.
I saw the 8k starting price in the comments and I'm not bothering with the video. I'm priced out already 😢
Just when I thought I knew what SL e-Bike I wanted, Orbea comes in and messes me up again. 😌
It would be awesome if the older bikes with the same motor could get the newer firmware update to take advantage of that extra power.
They shoud start selling framesets. The starting price 8k € is ridiculous👎
Framesets are usually the worst value though. - that would likely sell for 5k+
@@SDK2006b if i have the parts why shoud i buy a complete bike...
@@SDK2006b Worst profit for the bike manufacturer...
But I'll bet they would sell more! Imo
I made a big stink about this to the Orbea rep when I tested the new Wild. No way in hell is it worth it to me to buy the whole bike covered in parts I don’t need and don’t want. Make a frame and don’t get ridiculous with the price and we’re talking.
I agree @BSE75..and I simply choose not to buy their overpriced products if I don't get at least a 25% discount from the retail recommended price; as you can see right now, at the sellout, the current(future previous) model you can purchase it with a minimum 30%, even 40%...and at these prices, the retailer still has his markup and so is the manufacturer(just to have an idea of the actual costs of these bikes); so, in my opinion, it is a very simple matter: buy at sellout or ask for a serious discount and, of course, don't ever buy at the RRP, no matter how nice the new bike is.
In my country, there is a saying; stupid are not those who ask, stupid are those willing to pay.
The price is fucking ridiculous!!
Looks great, if only Orbea made the effort to support the older models with some of this tech given the huge cost of them!
Thanks for keeping it honest. Good review, it's in my maybe list!
Great review Rob very informative! This looks to be a common theme with next gen SLs - we'll probably see everything full power or close to it in 1-2 years, as the weights come close enough to provide a normal bike feel.
I got a rise m-team in February for £7k with a 'free' range extender. Amazing bike. I would recommend people go for the 2023 version over this at a massively reduced price. No need to pay upwards of 10k just for the latest and greatest. Or wait till early 2025 when this will be sub £8k. :)
This looks like my dream bike. It would be amazing in Tasmanian conditions. Also, I’m a lot smaller than Rob. Thanks for the comprehensive review. I’m going to trade in my 2020 Tuebo Levo
That is £11999 are they Crazy is 164000 Swedish krona it's a 6 month of work for a medium pay jobb.
High end bikes aren't really targeted at the person with an average income. The same goes for high end cars, high end motorcycles and pretty much high end "anything". An average income person can buy a very nice analogue bike for £3000.
tbh, I was thinking of getting an light emtb but not for these prices, full power doesn't amke sense in my area as it would be absolute overkill because of little available elevation. I still have my normal bikes, but I am slowly turning away from mountainbiking due to prices. In germany people don't buy their bikes rather lease it via their work, what gives you tax benefits and when you buy the used bike at the end you have a massive discount overall. A ~5k-bike for example would then cost about 3400€, but this price includes service fees for three years.
Best production in MTB videos out there Rob!!! You and the loam ranger should do a video together!
Orbea have just shown us where the e-bike industry is heading lightweight but a choice of power from the motor the bridge between light weight emtbs and full fats
Finally they offer bigger batteries, well done, the old one is now really old. Good with the two setups you can choose via App.
Great review Cheers 🇦🇺
nice review, congrats!
Great review. Thanks. What do you recommend for a carbon 50mm rise handlebar?
I still don't understand why Small/medium bike are spec with the same component dans large/XL. Most of the time, taller rider are heavier than small rider, thus needing burlier build. Your argument toward a 38 perfectly shows this. A 65kg rider dont need a 38, but at 6'3 and 90kg like yourself, i clearly see a benefit of a 38. Same thing coul apply to brakes, wheel and tire. The MYO ''kinda'' offer that possibility, but I would like to see that in more brand.
But you can have a tall skinny person that weighs 60kg and a short fat person that weighs 100kg. Too many variables to cover.
Just ordered the old one a few weeks ago - didn't expect such a massive upgrade this year. The discount was massive, too, though. But, I can't say I'm not jealous 😂
Same except we bought the discount at $3999 for a 60kg wife...540 with range extender is perfect for her. Now I get to wait...
sell it 🤡
Nice Rob...when are you taking the Mondraker Dune out..... that may tick your boxes and very interested to hear your opinion on the low power Bosch sx motor 🤔
My 5'-1" wife loved the 1st gen. Rise, but the standover was a bit much for her. Any predictions on if the Gen 2 (short travel), will be more accessible to smaller riders like my wife? And, if you wanted to slap a 50mm riser bar on the bike (as you mention), is there enough cable housing in reserve to allow the higher rise handlebar? And, is there a way to mount a chainring bash guard? That said, it's a beauty!
Regarding the intended use: I do keep hearing influencers talking about the intended use of any given bike and I fully understand as a product developer why that is. But the thing that always comes to my mind is me being a child on a bmx. Still at 41 I do ride any bike, cargo, Dutch bike, folding bike, gravel, the list is long, like I am child. So from going down side walks over a curbstone to riding on trails with bikes that are not ment in developers mind for it. At this price point I would want a stiffer back, a burly front fork and a do it all knife that really makes me not wondering whether or not this bike is intended for it. A bike should be able to take a beating and a MTB needs to go up and down hill. Thanks for the steady nice reviews, Rob!
The orbea wild is the better all-rounder.
Dang - this, the Moterra SL, and the Dune are droolworthy.
Wowzer, mid 16kg's thats mega, as a current Heckler SL owner at 18.9kgs and a 430wh battery , cannot believe that these SL type emtb's are coming out with that power level and weight, although thats the 140mm travel option, but still impressive.
Woukd love to see a review on the new orange phase evo
Rob, have you got knee protectors on under you bottoms or are they incorporated into your bottoms? Thanks
Hey Rob, thanks again for a great review! Do you know the 420wh's weight?
It's a shame they didn't build it bit more focussed on the descends. Would be great to have another big brand joining the SL super-enduro segment. Could have been a replacement for my Kenevo SL.
1.96KG for the 420Wh 👍
Looks sweet. So you said you like the 85 nm motor, and Orbed have chosen that for a reason - so was the specially adapted 45nm motor on the previous Rise not actually that good an idea then?
So that build is basically an Orbea wild 😂
Pretty much. Maybe they are going to trim done their line and drop the Wild. Most bike companies need to pair done their offerings to save costs.
@@vr4042 or make the wild bigger and burlier.
Much lighter. I have a Rise and while I am eying a Wild as a second bike that sucker is much heavier. I still may spring for this one though, I also need a third since I need a removable battery bike for travel trips on planes.
@@KurtRWalker have a 2022 Rise. I would have 3 if I had the budget 😂
@@KurtRWalker this build vs Wilde is .7kg or 1.5 lbs lighter is all.
Insane!
Start price of 8 grand .....no wonder bike brands are going bust....and rightly so...I'm still thrashing a 2021 trek rail 5 that cost me 4 grand.
Still on my Merida 160 😅
You admit to using a three-year-old bike. I hope your friends don't know.
Awesome bike. If they offered a frame only option I’d consider it.
Yes Rob 🎉great review, the bike looks amazing 🤩 is it now 85NM instead of 65 Nm , would you now prefer this to the Wild or ?
Wild has a stiffer rear end, and is more confident inspiring in the fast dh sections.
This and the new Moterra SL from Cannondale, lead the way for even longer travel full powered Emtbs with bigger batteries at 20Kg
The problem is in the amount of power the old battery can deliver. And the new batteries shown here probably won’t fit in the frame.
As an e-bike owner for a few years now, totally agree about Orbea's decision to install non removable batteries in this and the Wild, I'm flying to the Alp in September with my bike, as some mates are also driving and they are taking all the bike batteries with them, plus when we move around we can charge the bikes in our rooms off the bikes. Plus, now I won't also consider anything outside Bosch or Brose motors for when the inevitable breakage happens and it needs sending away for repair.
it is removable just not as easy as batteries that you can see outside, on the down tubes.
How do you fly with a bike that doesnt have a removable battery? I have a Rise and was thinking about Wild but will have to look at a Propain since very few bikes have an easily removable battery so I can take it to Peru, Spain Italy from Vegas etc.
@@KurtRWalker You have to remove the motor first. It takes about 20 min first, with a bit of practice you can do it in 5-6 minutes.
You can completely drop almost any dropper post on all the Whyte e160 and e180 models for the last 2 years 👌🏻👌🏻 my friend has a medium Whyte e160 with. 200mm dropper completely dropped 👌🏻👌🏻
Waiting for your review on cube ams one44.. thanks
OMG its here
Why you sneaky Pete! Ha ha! Didn't I just ask the question the other day on the question of lightweight vs full fat etc? I'm sure I said the Orbea Rise had been doing it before them all and they should offer it with the ability to let the user adjust the motor at their leisure .... and here we have the Gen 2 Rise! ❤
What's the benefit of calling it SL bike if it isn't unless you take the highest build? Which costs way too much for a bike.
I would appreciate if you'll mention it.
The first lightweight full power bike👀👀
Yes! The New Dream 😁
Nice but the Cannondale Moterra SL seems to have the lead over the Rise LT, great reviews as ever Rob.
how so?
I loved my old rise and this has built on the bits i loved. However, I’d go for the new cannondale SL over this currently.
I wonder how this lower wattage 85nm motor compares to the bosch sx? Maybe just one is better at low rpm and the other at high?
Rob a video with the new CYC Photon for an updated diy ebike would be cool
Does that tiny multitool provides enough torque for the shock mount
Heckler SL review at some point Rob?
Great review although I have to call you out on never needing 800wH battery capacity 😂. I’m quite sure you Rob Chase your buddies with all on boost for three hrs+ in the mountains.
When will you review the Monterra SL ?
why dont you review LCE930 already? is it not good?
So many features on this bike are well thought out,
2 support profiles, and battery capacities, the weight and power offered. It even looks good.
Then they wet the bed by using headset cable routing, and the motor rattles like a box of spanners , and it's noisy whilst climbing too.
I'm sure owners will get used to it but I'd rather not have to.
1:33 WoW!
Blows my mind that reviewers never talk range when everyone is so concerned with range.
Range is so subjective though. Different elevation, different terrain, different rider weight and fitness all make a huge difference to range. Technically the range is unlimited as you can pedal them without assistance.
@@streddaz what utter drivel
@@YorkshireEmtbso you can do and exact range test that would apply to all riders in all conditions? Just post the link when you do. 😉
I've ridden my 2022 M20 Rise on full power and got 20 miles. If I am careful with the power, by turning off on flat and downhil, then I have had 40 miles and still had 10% battery left. It all depends on rider usage, terrain etc.
@@UKMitchy exactly. There’s so many things that can alter the range.
Big yes to short chainstays for minier me :)
Personally like the sound of the engine on an E-Bike.
hi, nice review. can you change the battery now?
You have to remove the motor first. It takes about 20 min first, with a bit of practice you can do it in 5-6 minutes.
pls include frame size to make weight numbers more accurate
'SL' Slightly Lighter
12:00 was a mean old gear change, HG+ ftw.
As always Rob a masterclass, very nice bike but £8K start point and faults no thanks.
Have a orbea wild coming, a week out
To a non ebike user, 85nm of torque sounds a lot for assistance?
It probably won’t take long until someone figures out how to flash the EP801 of the last version, the kind of facelift version, with the new one. Then you do have almost all of it - and currently you can get pretty good deals for it. If you make sure you’re not getting your hands on the first version, accidentally.
Besides that. The price tag is ridiculous. Given the current situation of the bike industry I don’t think they will keep that price for long, but still too much.
Don't get me wrong, 20.1kg is not bad at all but when you consider my alloy Levo weighs 23kg it doesn't seem that great. Especially as you have a smaller battery.
true, it s not worth it
Coil, 240mm dropper and DD tyres add a chunk of weight 👍
You can easily have it down to 16 kg with an XC focused build. However, you will loose on versatility and durability.
4 years later and Orbea still haven't figured out how to display the battery percentage remaining?
No 10-step LED light system, or no small OLED or whatever screen, to display a percentage?
And asking for $11,000.00!? 🤦♂️
Dose it come with a UDH?
If this bike was made with the Bosch CX full fat motor and the RS capability in the app, I think it would be close to the perfect bike. A mullet option would just tip the scales. The money though .... I've never joined the bandwagon of cost if emtbs but it is getting ridiculous. Im not sure this is a good move for Orbea? Lots of bike manufacturers getting into trouble, probably as they have a bigger range of bikes than most they can take a risk with the emtbs.
total weight permissible?
I wonder if they will update the software on my 2023 mode lso i can use the full 85nm.. there is no reason to have the bike limited, when the exact same motor is used in this generation... i want the entire 85Nm.
Iirc, the old battery doesn't provide enough juice for an unlocked motor.
I wonder if this new battery fits into the old frame? When the older batteries start failing/losing capacity, it would be a great upgrade.
my current ebike just dropped in value with this release. Every moth it drops in value.
mine dropped from 6k to 4k euro in 1 year. i will never give them my money again.
The biggest problem with most of these light weight/half power ebikes is that by adding lightness the manufacturers have added the inconvenience of a non-removable battery which is a deal breaker for me😕
As an e-bike owner for a few years now, totally agree about Orbea's decision to install non removable batteries in this and the Wild, I'm flying to the Alp in September with my bike, as some mates are also driving and they are taking all the bike batteries with them, plus when we move around we can charge the bikes in our rooms off the bikes. Plus, now I won't also consider anything outside Bosch or Brose motors for when the inevitable breakage happens and it needs sending away for repair.
Does the Rs motor rattle like other shimano?
The old one yes
RS Motors are the same as normal motors just with another software
There is a slight rattle, yes.
Are you saying the old one rattled & the RS doesn’t? E6000 did E8000 did. Not tried an EP801, does that not rattle? I had a go on a whyte 160mm rattled like mad! (I’m on brose/mahle)
Can we expect an update to the Wild soon then?
The 2024 version (for season 2024 and 2025) was released one month ago. Check out the test ride on this channel.
Prefer the shorter rear for easier maneuverability. It's not often that climbs are so steep that it's a problem. And riding is more general trail riding not real long enduro stints.
WTF no way, I'm either waiting for a cheap SL ebike from polygon or getting the new canyon. 8k is CRAZY.
The motor STILL rattles nooooooo😢, I SO hoped that Orbea would have fixed that annoying noise from the motor, The Wild is silent with the Bosch motor
The bike market wonders why it's struggling when these bikes are 8K plus, limited to a much smaller market! I understand there are a lot of costs, but the prices cut the market to dentists/doctors and business owners who are flying high! Well..... I best get my MTB clothing business flying then! Looks like a dreamy bike!
Will a 2.8 tire fit on the rear?
no
I don't like it. It might be light in some configurations, but it's not cheap and it sure ain't pretty.
So no mullet ?
I wonder if I could trade my gen 1 rise for this one
Ganz richtig.
Why no mullet 😭
Why can't Mondraker and Specialized figure out how to build an ebike that can slam a long dropper?
When I bought my Rise, it’s big selling point for me was that it didn’t look so much like an eMTB and the “RS Tune” for a more natural pedaling experience. But now that the rest of the industry has caught up, I see no compelling reasons to buy a Rise at this point. All these numbers / percentages and the “RS Tune” sound more like marketing wankery to me. 🤷♂️
I would think it's a technical marvel if it weighed under 18kg with 160 fork. My Turbo Levo weighs only 1 kg more with 170 fork, and I can easily get it down to the same weight with couple more lighter parts. Sweet looking bike though..
Loose the DH tires and the coil shock and you will be at 18 kg.
The looks throw me off - swoopy lines
Surely the weakness is still the Shimano motor? Im an EP8 owner and im just waiting for it to die on me.
21 kg for 840 Wh is pretty impressive!!!!
What about motor rattle. ?
still there
Those headset bearings are not that great my 5 month old wild needs a set of headset bearings water runs down the cables and into them. Enduro need to update the 440c stainless steel to something like lc200n for improved corrosion protection
Try adjusting your seat up while riding uphill. Your legs are nowhere near coming to proper extension on the down stroke.
At 16kg it looks like a game changer. At 20kg you start to think "nah, full fat please", especially at that price
It is literally a full fat but with 20kg
@@sr20drftexactly
@@sr20drft No, it's a half-size battery, with half-size range, that's my point.
@@lozetchells9164 how is a 630wh battery half size ?
It sounds like we have a sliding scale now, rather than just light and full. It just depends what you want - more weight/power or less.
Monterra SL starts at 7k price would matter if u want bigger batteries..
This looks like my dream bike, but the price is putting me off.😅
sold my rise two days ago. after 6 months checking out the "light E MTB" market. As a gravel biker and MTB Rider I chose to go back to the "full" E MTB because it's just way more fun! There is no chance light E MTB can compete when it comes to punch and fun factor.
They’re fun up until you have to heft the full fat over a fence or put it on a roof then they suck.
🥰👍🏻
But why??? So are they cancelling the Wild? And that stiffening cross brace is ugly, but probably necessary for the 'beefier' build.
Looks same as all other ebikes plus why do they all still have direliers when there are ebikes with transmission
