Tropic Thunder is a 2008 action comedy film directed by Ben Stiller, who wrote the screenplay with Justin Theroux and Etan Cohen. The film stars Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Baruchel, and Brandon T. Jackson as a group of prima donna actors making a Vietnam War film. When their frustrated director (Steve Coogan) drops them in the middle of a jungle, they are forced to rely on their acting skills to survive the real action and danger. Tropic Thunder parodies many famous war films, specifically those based on the Vietnam W*r. The ensemble cast includes Tom Cruise, Nick Nolte, Danny McBride, Matthew McConaughey, and Bill Hader.
Stiller developed Tropic Thunder's premise during the production of Empire of the Sun in the spring of 1987, and later enlisted Theroux and Cohen to complete a script. The film was green-lit in 2006 and produced by Stuart Cornfeld, Stiller, and Eric McLeod for Red Hour Productions and DreamWorks Pictures as an international coproduction between the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Filming took place in 2007 on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i over thirteen weeks and was the largest film production in the island's history. The extensive marketing campaign included faux websites for three of the main characters and their fictional films, a fictional television special, and selling the energy drink advertised in the film, "Bo*ty Sweat".
Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks released Tropic Thunder in the United States on August 13, 2008. It received generally positive reviews for its characters, story, faux trailers, and cast performances. However, the depiction of the mentally handicapped and use of blackface makeup attracted controversy. The film opened at the top of the American box office and retained the number-one position for three consecutive weeks, ultimately grossing more than $195 million worldwide before its release on home media on November 18, 2008. Downey was nominated for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, while both he and Cruise received nominations for a Golden Globe Award.

"Man, I don't drop character 'till I done the DVD commentary."
Fun Fact: When recording the audio commentary for the Unrated DVD and Blu-ray, Robert Downey, Jr. actually spends the entire commentary in the character that appears on the screen as the movie progresses.
Historical Fact: The South East Asian gang Flaming Dragon, led by a pre-teen boy, was modeled after God's Army, a guerrilla army in Myanmar. The group was led by twin brothers Johnny Htoo and Luther Htoo, who were nine years old when it was founded in 1997. Johnny and Luther Htoo were fond of American action movie heroes, especially the Rambo franchise.
Cruise Unbound Fact: Ben Stiller said nearly all aspects of the Les Grossman character were developed by Tom Cruise, including the dancing and the look of the make-up. Stiller said that in addition to the more obvious make-up effects applied to Cruise's face and head, and the extra hair on his chest and arms, Cruise also decided to play the character wearing oversized prosthetic hands.

The people who cry ‘RDJ wAs dOiNg bLaCkFaCe!” Clearly don’t have the critical thinking ability to see the meta commentary his character was doing. RDJ’s character took the long Hollywood practice of casting ethnic/minority characters with big name actors that aren’t of the ethnicity/minority in question (see Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club, Apu from The Simpsons, etc) and took it to it’s most illogical extreme.
RDJ didn’t do blackface, RDJ played an Australian method actor. It was the Australian method actor that did blackface. Because getting the best actor in the world to change his skin pigmentation to play an African American makes way more sense than to hire a lesser known African American talent in the same role!
RDJ’s character is the ultimate parody and there’s a reason he was nominated for the Oscar for it!

The more pure it is, the more of a golden color it is. However, moisture and heat in the air turns it into a dark gooey mess. Hence "black tar". It likely wouldn't look like that sitting out in the open air of a tropical climate. When sealed, it would likely look like a rock layered with a fine dust. In its purest form, yes i believe that's what it looks like.
The more hands it goes through, the more it's exposed to moisture, heat, and compression, the more it darkens.
When finally received by a user, it likely looks literally like black tar.
