    I consider Quatermains' last words in the movie (and the last line in Connerys' career) very fitting. Quatermain wasn't just passing the torch to Tom Sawyer, in a way Connery himself was passing the torch to the next generation of Actors. At least, this is my take on this.

      Me too, it also sets the tone of who they are by their different fighting styles. Captain Nemo with his swords and hand-to-hand combat, along with Quartermain, even Swayer, and Dorrian. How Mina wrecked the guy who attacked her, and the Griffin using a book to fight. How they approach the situation, shows the viewer who they are. I wish there were more of that. It sorta there when they go to Venice, and toward the end, but it really isn't consistent through the film.

      I do wish that this was after Hyde's recruitment. Having every member of the League (including Hyde) do battle against Moritarty's men would've been a joy to watch. I like to imagine that Jekyll would've been chased off into another room of Gray's house, drinking the elixir and hiding behind some furniture while the men who followed fire their guns at him. At first you'd think they have succesfully killed Jekyll, only to be surprised by Hyde.

      There's an excellent fanedit called "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Strikes!" made by BionicBob on the IFDB (internet fanedit database).
      It removes a lot of the cringe theater jokes, minimizes Tom Sawyer, adds back deleted scenes, color grades the movie to black & white, and applies a grain filter to give an old film serial look (as well as hide some of the poorly aged CG).

      You know, that's a good point. I also don't agree with 23:21 , while the League is a creation of Moore's the characters in it aren't. He essentially butchered the characters from books of other writers. It is still an original creation to Moore, but it's the sort of butchering that isn't different from one of my, or anyone else's video edits. So, what I'm saying is Alan Moore needs to chill.

    • @robsonwaterkemper
      @robsonwaterkemper Před 2 lety +10

      Although the characters are from public domain books, the precise premise of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comic is Moore's doing. The way the characters are arranged in a Justice League team. The way Mr. Hyde is a proxy for Hulk. The portrayal of Nemo as an Indian Prince, with turbans and all. The way Mina Murray assumes the leadership of the League. And specially the way Moriarty is inserted as the real mastermind. If you happen to do a similar story by using the same public domain characters, you would be doing plagiarism against Moore.
      That's the plaintiffs claims in the lawsuit against Fox. Maybe they had a script with public domain characters similar to the ones Moore used, but the story was more similar to the movie Fox made (which was very different from the Moore's comic book). Maybe Fox merged the script from the plaintiffs with the Moore's comic book.

The stories from Flemyng and Curran about Connery are insightful, saying that he was generous with the crew and paid for dinner for everyone each time. It's a shame he called it quits after this. Only time he's come close to making another film was his interest in playing Albert Finney's part in Skyfall.

Half the genius of reading the source material for instance is trying to figure out who some of these characters are when they're backgrounds are told but not their full names. @lukerowe3230 Před 4 lety +15

    “Comic accuracy” isn’t important to me in film adaptations, it can be different so long as what is produced is good. But many of the ideas I like here are dropped or barely touched on. The League are much less interesting here. In the comics they’re like washed up celebrities. As you say, they’re “broken”, which is def the case. Here their pasts are barely touched on, and the characters are like 10% of what they were in the source material. Stuff like that isn’t impossible to do in a movie like this. Another interesting aspect that wasn’t carried over was the continuity with the source material. The characters feel like they were straight from the pages of the classic the novels they came from. You could read those books, and then feel like you’re seeing a continuation of those characters and their stories. Unfortunately the film takes some serious creative liberties with it’s characters, so it comes off more as fan fiction. The changes don’t really do anything for the characters either.
    The Del Toro Hellboy films take a lot of liberties with the characters and story. But I don’t mind the changes, largely because of Perlman and GDT’s direction, but the characters are fun and have good chemistry. Nuada from the Golden Army isn’t even in the comics but he is easily one of the great comic book movie villains of the last 20 years or so. Off topic, but i’d love a review of that first Hellboy.
    Tl;dr, comic book accuracy isn’t important if the movie is good, but if the changes don’t work, then don’t bother changing anything. I wouldn’t mind seeing another stab at the material on the big screen, but only if it’s helmed by the right people, who can bring something new and exciting to the story.
