"Look at that subtle off-black colouring. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh my God, it even has a bat symbol." - Bruce Wayne.
This is really damn funny
"How much more black could this be? And the answer is... none. None more black."
Criminally underated comment!!
The Bateman technically killed the Joker. He did kill Jared Leto's character in American Psycho.
@@peebay3515 That dude, Ah-phan-Ghoulo was one mean dude!
Fans: "We never said thank you."
Nolan: "And you'll never have to..."
Dark Knight is a great film; but its refreshing to finally hear someone else think Begins was better.
I also think so !!
Dark Knight is a great Joker film that has Batman in it. Begins is a true Batman movie.
thanks god i m happy im not alone. This movie is so well written, dialogues are fantastic
Sean Young it’s just a contrarian view, and it’s wrong. TDK is the best superhero movie of all time

It's a damn shame Oliver doesn't have more subscribers. The work he does, the passion he has and the attention to detail he delivers in his retrospective reviews should be appreciated by a much larger audience.
Thanks for your support and feedback.
Agreed. But also that's part of why I like his channel, it's an unknown, uncorrupted gem. 😊
haha don't worry i won't be pushing loot crates any time soon which always seems to happen CZcamsrs hit a certain number of subs.
I often think about why this channel isnt a powerhouse in the film review area of CZcams, it's often incredibly unfortunate that the creators with the most passion and talent arent always the most successful. Im simply glad that despite whether or not his channel blows up he seems to care enough about us and movies to make great content anyway.- Subscriber for life
Oliver is also the sense of reason here. He also has courage to subtly point out how Dark Night is the “busy” movie. Kinda like Batman Forever but with Heath Ledger blowing shit up, and slashing people’s throats. For a generation of dimwits Heath became the benchmark for artistic greatness.
.... Holy shit this movie is already 12 years old.
Chaz Hartwayne time flies!
Peter Panda And it's already got two sequels and a reboot!
It makes sense, explains why it looks like a FILM, and not just a product to sell more extended universe, like pretty much all modern super hero movies.
+Adûnâi what?
Adûnâi shit opinion
When I was a young boy I watched “Batman Begins” without first asking for permission from my parents. I was profoundly affected by the dark & gritty nature of the Heroism in the film. I have only grown more attracted to “Batman Begins” over the years. It is such a good film.
“It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.” Is a Heroic Philosophy that will forever linger on in my mind.
yeah i watched it when i was like 5 or 6, we got it from the local library and then my life changed forever
I will never forget the first time I watched Batman begins I was in seventh grade 2010- 2011 and my friend and I were out screwing around late at night one night and before we parted ways I asked him if he could go inside his house and grab his DVD of Batman begins and let me borrow it and to my surprise he said sure and he went and grabbed it for me. I loved it so much that I spent some of my allowance money And bought the DVD from him for cash
When I first saw this movie it felt like a totally new style of movie I've never seen before. Now it's the signature Nolan Feeling but this was the first of that kind. Totally unique and awesome I was hooked on this movie watched it like 10 times in one year maybe even more
The soundtrack was amazing when this film came out. It's not their fault everyone copied it. Just proof of how powerful it was at the time. Watching this movie in the theater, the soundtrack absolutely delighted along with the visuals, action, and pacing. It Rocked!!!
Yeah I didn't quite agree with what he said about the music. It's a really amazing score.
Gary Oldman is so underrated in The Dark Knight Trilogy.
After seeing Batman Year One I thought he did amazing job playing that similar character.
I love how the Nolan movies each have a different overarching theme:
Batman Begins = Fear
The Dark Knight = Chaos
The Dark Knight Rises = Pain
The Dark Knight Rises = Plot Holes
Phil Michaels I always thought Rises was a theme of Hope.
I don't think the people who actually use that word in regard to TDKR actually know what it means.
It means bad movie. Just a shoddily written movie with so many plot holes..
Purefoldnz I rest my case
I remember when it came out in June of 2005 (US). I think I saw it over 8 times in the theaters and couldn't wait until it came out on DVD. It still holds up very well 15+ years later.
Also I never had a big issue with bale's voice. anybody feel the same way?
It was occasionally out of place, but I thought it worked. Begins it's perfect, knight and Rises, JUST slightly too much. 'Swear to me!!!!' I mean that stuff is brutal when you think of it from that corrupt cop's point of view...
Fun to make fun of, but it was bad enough to break the character
Fun to make fun of, but it was not bad enough to break the character
agreed
Well, I'm a big fan of Heavy Metal music. So growly voice isn't something that I'm not familiar with.
I don't understand why people don't seem to get it. If you were Batman & needed to keep your true identity secret from any & everyone & you were a well known public figure before being a vigilante. Then you would absolutely change your voice! Especially when trying to scare the shit out of criminals every night.
These are nitpicks complains that would eventually turn up over time when a film gets analyzed again and again
I don't think it's so much about changing the voice per se, but the way it's so over the top, that the voice is almost comical. I do enjoy this 21st. century Batman trilogy (I have the DVD's in my collection), but the voice of Batman is hilarious in the way it is so over the top and yet performed with such a degree of seriousness.
@@SimoExMachina2 Exactly. Keaton changed his voice for Batman, he was the first actor to do so. But it wasn't over the top ridiculous. The stupidest thing was in the last one in the trilogy, they had already heard all the criticism about Bale's stupid voice so what did they do? Ramped it up even more! It was like something out of Huckleberry Hound.
@@SimoExMachina2 I always liked the voice. It's way better than the stupid robot voice that Affleck has. I view it as Bruce putting on this inhuman front. It's part of his theatricality. I never understood why people are cool with a grown man millionaire dressing up like a bat, but can't handle him putting on an intimidating voice that also helps hide his identity.
Road Glider change your voice not ruin it. In Batman begins it was good but the rest not so much.
Best of the 3 👌
Homework Radio agreed
What the hell do you smoke and where can I get some? Gotta be a hell of a drug to tell me this movie was the best of a trilogy that contains THE DARK FUCKING KNIGHT!!!
@@GopherChomper no.. The dark knight rises and batman begins are better. And I didn't smoke shit.
@@GopherChomper I know that on a technical level The Dark Knight is better but Batman Begins is my personal favorite in the trilogy. I really like the characterization of Bruce and Batman. (And maybe there's a little bit of bias because Scarecrow is my favorite Batman villain and I really liked Scarecrow in Begins, despite him having very little screen time)

I appear to have mispronounced Ken Watanabe's name which some folks had highlighted, i do apologise. When reading out a script of over 7000 words the odd error slips through the cracks which I failed to miss. Also I didn't credit Goyer as writing the first Blade and only highlighted the sequels. Goyer wrote the trilogy.

Didn't notice the errors. Excellent retrospective, as always!
HOW CAN WE TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY FROM NOW ON!?
Really good retrospective though :D
How dare you, Olly. I'm unsubscribing, tweeting negative tweets, and writing you a strongly worded letter that expresses my disgust.
If you mispronounced a name incorrectly, does that mean you pronounced it correct? ;P
Watching this makes me hate Suicide Squad even more.

I don't understand how anyone thought it was a good idea to make that movie. I'm at even more of a loss as to how a second one could get a green light.

The montages at the beginning of these reviews are incredible. They perfectly capture the themes of the movie and aren't just a "greatest hits" of the best scenes.
Yeah they’re often better than the actual studio trailers for the films
I always hated that Gotham looked so good and distinctive in this one but in the next two it was just Chicago. The monorail that was destroyed at the end of this movie for example was never mentioned or acknowledged at all in the sequels.
Actually it was mostly Pittsburgh PA in the third.
I live in Chicago and yes, that’s why I didn’t buy 2 and 3 as Gotham. That’s Wacker drive enhanced by questionable CGI.
Absolutely brilliant, Mr Oliver. As a director and filmmaker, I see the huge work you put into these retrospectives. The narrative, editing, voice over, research of the films impact at the time of release...just spot on. Most of all, you don't make it about yourself, but about the film - true love that is. Cheers bruv, keep it up :)
Thanks for the great feedback!
Have to agree, this is also my favourite Batman movie of this trilogy.
Man, these retrospectives never seem to fail to make me want to watch the film you are covering. I actually haven't watched this since its release in theaters, so I will have to give it another viewing soon. It looks like it has held up pretty well.
Thanks Austin!
Bloody hell Oliver, you're pumping these out! I loved Batman Begins when it came out. I'd watched Forever a lot as a kid but Begins was the first time I felt I understood the character and got a proper insight into who the guy actually was behind the mask. I remember in 2005, I had no concept of "reboots" and figured that when the Joker card is handed to Batman at the end, it was meant to lead into Tim Burton's 89 original lol, how times have changed. Anyway, great video as always. There's no one else like you putting out this kind of material on CZcams and you fucking own it!
Thanks a lot Sam! A number of people had moaned I hadn't done a retrospective in ages, the longer the review the longer it takes to put them out but also it was xmas!
Oliver Harper do you think we will see an iron giant retrospective this year, with the blu ray release last year?
A GriffinTV absolutely love that film, can't believe they only released it on blu ray last year
I also had that exact same thing when growing up watching Batman. My first movie was _Forever_, but _Begins_ was the one where I truly understood the character. And just like you, I thought _Begins_ was a prequel to the '89 _Batman_, I did not know it was supposed to be a reboot. ;D And yes, Oliver is possibly my favorite CZcams critic, one who doesn't scream and yell at a movie's flaws, instead becomes thorough with them.
Sams ChanneI That exactly what Batman Begins was originally supposed to be...a prequel to the '89 Batman.
I forget how solid Batman Begins was. Your channel is amazing!
IMO, my favourite installment of the Nolan Trilogy
I think they're both equally attractive, but I do feel that Katie does an equally good job as Rachel as Maggie does. It's popular to bash on Katie nowadays because of the whole Dawson's Creek thing and the Scientology crap, but I honestly think she's a good actress and she really holds her own in Batman Begins, especially considering the talent she's surrounded by.
I felt Maggie offered no improvement over Katie. Yes, people like to make fun of Katie Holmes' performance for a variety of (undeserved) reasons, but it's not like Maggie provided a powerful performance herself. My only issue with Katie Holmes is that she has a very young-sounding voice, so it doesn't so intimidating enough for a no-nonsense ADA who's unafraid of standing up to corruption and the threats that go along with it, but at least she's easier on the eyes.
In short, any problem you could say about Katie Holmes' performance could be said about Maggie G's.
Same
I'll go one step further, and state that it's a FACT that you consider this to be your favourite installment.
"As a man, I'm flesh and blood I can be ignored I can be destroyed but as a symbol. As a symbol I can be incorruptible. I can be everlasting." That shit is fucking awesome and whoever wrote it is a God damn genius. Thank you Nolan.
Pretty convenient when characters do their own analysis.
@@kamdan2011 why is it wrong for characters to self analyze? Bruce still didn’t get that idea to become a symbol until he met Ras Al Gul anyway. He didn’t just think of that out of no where.
@@Hardrive2677 It’s taking something the audience already knows and treats it like it’s genius when said out loud.
@@kamdan2011 he was talking to Alfred who hadn’t seen him in 7 years. He’s not talking to the audience.
@@Hardrive2677 But still relaying to the audience. It’s like every line should follow up with Dark Helmet from Spaceballs saying directly to the audience, “Everybody got that?”
I love THE DARK KNIGHT as much as the next person, however it kind of bugs me how, ever since that film came out, everyone seems to forget this one exists.
here's a comment for you before I even started watching it - Thank the CZcams algorithm for putting this right at the top of my front page recommendations. You know I like your videos, and this movie has been on my mind and in my conversatins hard core for about a week right now. Some vibe in the atmosphere....
Thanks very much Sean!
This is THE OG Hero Origin story! Amazing movie
1:18 "Don't come down here with your ANGA!"
Begins was amazing. I was floored seeing it in 2005 before The Dark Knight came out. It put Nolan on the map for me for movies.
41:51 Perfect Batman voice right there. Why the f*ck they altered it in the sequels I'll never know
I guess he couldn't scream using this one, but you're right.
Bale kept upping the intensity of the voice as the trilogy went along, eventually turning it into a caricature
Yes!! Thanks you Oliver for making a Batman Begins Retrospective.
My favourite Batman film ever.
This was 45 mins of pure joy for me : )
I love this movie; I go back and forth on whether I prefer this over Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. They're both high caliber Batman adaptations to me. Also, this exchange between Gordon and Batman is very reflective of what this film did for Batman on the big screen.
"I never said thank you."
"Now you'll never have to."
What, the Music is super easy to hum along with. One of the best film scores of this decade!
VandergriftMoefies its super easy barely a inconvenience get with the programm mate
Agreed. I don't know what this guy is talking about with the Hans and James bashing.
Batman Begins sets so much groundwork for the subsequent movies in terms of themes, ideas, and aesthetics. Which is pretty amazing considering no future sequels were planned at the time.
This is still 1 of my favorites! The hallucinations scenes are great.
Love that the retrospectives seem to be getting longer. Despite what they teach you in marketing classes, the 'under 40 minutes' rule is such nonsense.
Andrew Deen The more Oliver the better! He could make hour long reviews/retrospectives and I'd watch every second. :)
I remember seeing Batman Begins at the movie theater. Once I walked away from it and was in the car with my girlfriend, I was just quiet. I just count believe what I saw. It was the best Batman movie ever done at that time. It is incredibly epic, smart, realistic, it was just so incredible that they just took the story so serious, it was amazing.
The cuts in the beginning of your videos are unrivaled. As always, great work, Oliver.
Thank you very much!
It's a travesty you don't have more subs. These reviews are brilliant. I love your attention to detail in your editing, structure and pacing. You're essentially telling a story (a beginning, middle, and end) in a review!
Another great review of a movie that, in my opinion, and like you, I think is the best Batman movie to date.
Crazy to think there is just 8 years between Batman & Robin and Batman Begins. The cinematic change in that time is incredible.
Remember going to see this 3 times in the theater back in the summer of 2005! Great Movie...
Batman Begins is the best Batman film to me because it deeply explored the character of Bruce Wayne and not just Batman. No other live action Batman film to date has explored Bruce Wayne as well as BB. The animated films/TV shows have always done a great job of this and to see it done on film was refreshing to see for a change. When i first saw the trailers for BB, It totally turned me off because it looked bizarre for a Batman film. I was so used to seeing the campy cartoonish Batman that I didn't even recognize this as a Batman film from the trailers. I was hesitant to see BB when it came out but I'm glad I did because it was great film.
Batman v Superman ultimate xut is equal to BB in that dept imo
"And Why Do We Fall, Bruce?"
RedSon Because gravity is a force of nature and nature is not to be trifled with
Flush Fries and any force of nature, is not to be trifled with, Master Wayne
RedSon to pick ourselves up I love this film
so we can learn to pick us ourselves up. and i love this movie i will watch your videos you rock.
DavyDevilution Chokes me up every time. 😢
As always, great review, mate. Thorough, informative, well-structured, and entertaining.
Just found your channel, Oliver, and I'm loving your vids. One of the reasons I've always preferred Begins to Dark Knight and Rises, is that Gotham looks so dirty and seedy like it's portrayed in the comics. In the sequels, Gotham just looks too clean
Saw this in theater. Was an awesome time. At the time, I hadn't read comics in years and had actually forgotten that Professor Crane was the Scarecrow. So when he popped up as the Scarecrow for the first time it took me by surprise in a good way. He was always one of my favorite Batman villains so to actually see him onscreen (and be surprised by it thanks to my forgetting his alter-ego) was fantastic. I had to bite the side of my cheek to not shout *"Fuck YES!"* and disturb the other movie goers.
And then he was handled the way he was in the other 2 flicks...
I love how well you write these retrospective reviews, Oliver. Your voice goes down and the points are emphasized extremely well, the explanations flow and keep my interest. Good work, as always!
Yes! Finally you're doing this trilogy, awesome video mate!
I loved the tie-in video game for this movie, it stands out as one of the best movie-to-video-game adaptation, even if as you say, the story veers off in slightly different directions. Whether it's a coincidence or not, I like how the fer factor in this game was a precursor to its larger presence in the Arkham games.
Oh and by the way, top work Ollie, as always mate :)
YES! Been waiting for this review from you, Oliver! Brilliant job as always :)
Thanks Chris!
I've seen this movie I don't know how many times and that intro to your retrospective made me hyped to see it again. Great work, Oliver.
Your editing skills are top notch. Every time I see the behinning bits of these overviews it makes me want to watch the films on display.
Damn Oliver, your "trailers" before and after the retrospective keep getting better and better; this post-retrospective "trailer" (40:55 - end) kept juggling two narratives and it turned out great. Impressive stuff!
It took awhile to figure out how I was gonna do the end montage but after a few failed edits i got it how i wanted it, i love the dump of exposition that shane rimmer gives at the end, its proper trailer fodder dialogue and had to be used.
Great review. This was my favorite of all the trilogy films because of how much of the focus is on Batman and elements that reminded me of the earlier seasons of the 90s animated series.
Thanks for your work here on CZcams, I just found your channel and it's great! I like how every video is essentially a mini documentary on the film. Very informative!
The music in this one is especially good and it feels deeper than the others. Really epic in places and Falcone is maybe the best mobster villain performance of the series. Liam Neeson crowns it and the Dr Crane drug scenes were a clever way to insert comic book horror scenes. The “evil Batman” is absolutely terrifying.
I respectfully disagree with you in regard to the soundtrack you can't compare any soundtrack to this par inception to this one, hans zimmer did an awesome and is one of my favourite soundtracks
Same here. Great review of my 2nd favorite film of all time, but I disagree with you about the score. It's iconic and is better than all those that copied it. Also, the Elfman score just sounds like Beetlejuice to me.
Alex Ranarivelo what’s the 1st favorite film then?
The "problem" with Hans Zimmer regarding a good score is, that he's not a composer, but a damn good programmer of sequencers. The lack of composing skills shows a lot, imo. His music is very trivial. I love simplicity, but I'm not a fan of triviality.
@@samembaye7077 Exactly! Zimmer is no composer at all!
@@M0butu Right? Very overrated guy...
Only a casual Batman fan, and yet this is my favorite film of all time. I'm not arguing it's critically the BEST film ever made, but it gets so much right with regard to the craft of making film. I can't find anything that's really flawed, other than very minor nitpicks that every film has. I think maybe the martial arts choreography has its moments where it should have been done better, but I love the sword fight against Ken Watanabe and the final fight in the L-Train, which are the most important set pieces anyway.
Stupendous review as always Oliver! Loved all the reaserch you did, learned a lot about one of my favourite movies ever. Awesome editing too! Thank you! Was a great 45 minutes.
I like these retrospective reviews. They are done very well. very information.
Batman Begins is the best Batman movie
despite its flaws this is still the best damn comic book trilogy imo.

Great work! One of your best retrospectives yet, Oliver.
I prefer Batman Begins as well - its sequels are excellent, with 2nd overhyped and the 3rd one a bit misunderstood.

brilliant!!! well done dude
Love these! Please consider doing some classic sci-fi and fantasy films from the 1950s-1970s!
That would be really cool. Perhaps more "retro" than "spective" though, but there's some very good material to work with.
Oliver! I’m watching your vids years after years and still loving it. Great stuff mate!
Your analogy of the soundtrack in comparison to other superhero / action films today is so accurate that it hurts. OSTs today lack any actual character.
Great retrospective Oliver,I personally find this film to be streets ahead of Rises and is my favourite of the trilogy.Dark Knight is great but as you said the ending drags on.
Oliver, that was great!!!
So great to see you do this one Oliver. Thank you as always.
Great review! It's been a long time since I've watched Batman Begins, but now that I've watched your review, it's made me more open-minded to re-watch it and discover what I've missed while watching the Dark Knight trilogy over the years. Again, great review. Can't wait to see upcoming reviews of the other two Batman films.
My thought exactly, so far we dont really have THE live action Batman. One portrayal always seemed to have 1 or 2 flaws.
Keaton - Great voice, great suit BUT small frame, short
Kilmer - Looks good on suit (First suit minus the subtle nippage) BUT silly 1 liner, just doesnt feel like batman.
Clooney - Good....chin? BUT everything else.
Bale - Almost perfect BUT that fkin voice!!!
Affleck - ALLMOSSSTTT perfect...BUT BATMAN DOESNT KILL!!!
To be fair to Affleck's Batman he only kills in the time span BvS is set in. He didn't kill prior nor will he after. I'd personally consider him THE Batman, as far as live-action goes.
cant agree with you more.
He is by far my fave and we shall judge him by his solo batman movie. NOT justice league.
My sentiments exactly. Batman on live action, there have been bits and pieces. It isn't like Superman where Reeves portrayal is nearly universally accepted. My favorite overall Batman outside the comics is Kevin Conroy. Keaton is great as Batman and his voice is great, but his Wayne I found a bit bland. I'm with Oliver as that is the writing.
Michael Keaton is an amazing actor and hence why I'm super pumped for Homecoming as he's going to bring his A game. Kilmer was okay. Not the best to me, but not the worst. Clooney; there was nothing to him.
Bale: Excellent Bruce Wayne, but that dam voice.
Affleck: performance wise, excellent but the writing behind him, sucks. Goyer, strikes again with Snyder.
Keaton, Kilmer, Bale and Affleck are all Bat-killers
We still haven't seen a live-action "world's greatest detective"
Ben Affleck's Batman/Bruce Wayne portrayed in Dawn of Justice was a broken man. His been fighting crime for decades and with the murder of Robin for which Bruce blames himself for he has gone down a dark path. But after the events shown in Dawn of Justice and the sacrifice he saw from Superman he now realises his error's and has returned to his old self, no doubt we will get a much more traditional Batman in Justice League.
Love this movie when I saw it on the big screen and then when I saw The Dark Knight, It blew my mind and It became my favorite comic book movie of all time and my 2nd favorite movie of all time right up there with Tim Burton's Batman.
Very underrated channel and great reviews, you somehow manage to toe the line of reviewing without inflicting personal opinions
Top notch retrospective as always Oliver, fantastic work, thank uou :)
Henry cavil tried for the role of batman?!
Raj? lol great review. One of my favorite comic book movies. My personal favorite of Nolans trilogy.
Very nicely done Oliver, Batman Begins is my favourite Batman film too. I really like the content of this retrospective, with things I've never seen before. Great work.
I appreciate your high-fidelity reviews. These are all fantastic.
Nice Review as always Oliver, although i disagree about the Batman Voice.
I personally think it added something darker and "scary" to the whole Batman character.
His initial vision was to make his opponents feel the terror he felt as a child.
This movie made me feel more things than the other 2. This movie is perfection.
Really good retrospective Oliver, watched this a few times and it's held up really well!
Looking forward to the sequels 👍
I remember like it was yesterday, seeing this at midnight and not being able to contain my excitement . Great job O
