In this tutorial I'll show you the steps I used to paint this tricky watercolor practice exercise. This is not the easiest thing to paint, but extremely good practice for watercolor wash techniques and brushwork. Here you'll learn the tricks I used to paint this composition.

Hello! I'm Anthony. An independent artist and illustrator based near Paris in France. Watercolor painting was my first passion. So a few years ago I took out my old paints, and rekindled my love for watercolors. I decided to start charting some of my watercolor experiences in the form of my blog, “WatercolorAffair.com” (and now through my CZcams channel). My objective was to start sharing some of my hard won knowledge in the hope that it will help and inspire others to paint with watercolors!
Thank you for following !

Wow! Fabulous painting and an incredible exercise! Definitely going to give this a go! Looking forward to messing it up 😂😂🤪 failure is a good lesson…
Great idea ! Gonna try it out !
Thank you Anthony. Although I am not going to do this exercise, I am going to use the many great tips you have shown for other paintings.
Good to know :-) Happy painting !
This is beautiful. Mistakes!!! That's very helpful to know because I sure to make plenty. I can see progress, but I sometimes wonder if I'll ever get good at this. Acrylics were so much easier by comparison! But I really want to learn to use watercolor.
I love this idea. The abstract feel of the final work is fantastic and so refreshing. It will be the perfect project to paint when I get to finally visit my dad, an avid biker who sadly is very sick. Thank you for sharing such a stunning work!
I'm sure your dad would love something that you painted yourself :-)
Your are a great teacher ! Loved your video! Please keep sharing your knowledge
Love this project. I have some ideas I’m going to try with abstract shadow shapes. Thanks for the video.
Just wanted to say thank you for a great blog (and now videos!) Have been following you for a year and learned a lot; bought the first DS Essential 6 paints at your recommendation. Going to work on the magnolias tutorial this week, and then maybe this one...in a bit. :-)
I love the challenge! It looks like the prep work is a big part of it. Thanks for this refreshing tutorial!
I did it and I am very pleased with it, mistakes and all!
No problem Debbie !
Eek I will eventually try this 😂
Wow 🤩 what a great painting and exercise! It will definitely be challenging (but I don’t hate you for it!) 😃👍🏻
good to know Andrea :-)
It seems difficult but I would like to try it. The final result is very nice :)
I have been learning watercolor for a year. This is one of my best picture yet. My wife even said she liked it. It is very time consuming to get all the details, but we'll worth the effort.
Great news Richard :-)
Very cool video! Since my brain is fried these days I need a precise project to go for. Very neat delivery.
😮 ! I am going to check my email , to download the template , this is so challenging, i am still practicing the koi fish 🐠 but thank to you now I can paint apples or any fruit realistic . You are an amazing teacher big hugs from Chile.
Thanks so much Alejandra :-)
I did do your course and there you mentioned the Rosemary & Co #8 Kolinsky 33 brush. I was finally able to get it in the US. What do you use on this painting?
Hi Doreen - that was exactly the brush i used for this painting :-)
