    When you started talking about your reef tank it made me remember why I left the hobby for so long. I have had a tank of one type or another for most of my life. When I was 25 I picked up a second job at a fantastic shop called Tideline Aquatics in Charleston SC that was over 30 years ago. It is still up and running with the best owner and staff that I have seen. I later moved to Ohio and picked up a job in a high end aquatic shop there and set up my first reef tank. It was just a 75 gallon but being able to cherry pick along with a weekly small additions it turned into an absolute piece art. It was my love and the envey of all that saw it. Unfortunately there was a very nasty female involved that thought the best was to hurt me was to come over one morning in July and turn on my medal halides that I had on timer for 2 hours each day and shut off the ac and chiller and left. She was around for the whole build and knew exactly what she was doing. What I came home to that night broke me and I never had any desire to set up or keep fish on any level for 20 years or so after. I still worked in the business but had no desire to keep anything at home. Then about two years ago I found a 50 gal Oceanic reef ready cube at a Goodwill store for 29 bucks and bought it if for no other reason but to sell it on Craig's list. Thankfully I ended up plumbing it up and got it running instead. I now have 10 tanks up and running. All fresh water and I am even building tanks as well. I lucked out and picked up some free sheets of glass along with plywood and built a 90 gal Tanganyikin tank along with a 20 gallon cube that I am spawning barbs in as I write this. Sorry for the book but also I wanted you to know how much i enjoy your uploads and to say thanks for sharing .

    Hey Mark,
    I had been trying for a little while to breed panda corys and I have very little success.
    I feed them live bbs, frozen bloodworms and frozen brine shrimps. I do get mating behaviors and they spawn but I get only a few eggs each time...I got 5 total over the course of a month and been trying every week.
    I got 13 in a 30 gallon breeder tank.
    What boggling my mind quite a bit, I had kept 4 of these fellas in a community tank and they spawn ,accidently, 3-4 times and give 8-12 eggs each clutch. I wasn't doing anything special. Now that they have their own setup with 8 more friends and I'm doing the best that I can, I get few eggs.

    Hi there Mark, Thank you for such an informative video! I am relatively new to this hobby. I kept tropicals 40 years ago, but things have changed and knowledge is so freely available! I have successfully bred bronze, peppered and I now have 3 6 week old baby pandas! I suppose that makes me more successful than London Zoo! I am trying to get the right community tank environment to get my Schwarst's "at it" and I think I am on the right track. Keep up the good work. PS...I don't really care what she does with the Milt! I personally think she takes it into her mouth and then ejects it through her Gills and onto the basket of Eggs. I have a video which I think supports this view.

    I recently got back into having an aquarium and cory cats were my first fish pick.They are currently hanging out in a community tank loving life with all the plants and their nice group size of 8(Got a 55 gallon so plenty of space!). I've also been wanting to breed these since they seem to be harder to find in my area and I want to try something new. I don't plan on it soon as I want to buy or make a smaller aquarium for that reason but don't have the time yet. Now I was wondering this since the first part, what does it mean when corydoras are swimming after each other's gills/mouth? I have two adults that have been doing this for ages and I have no clue why

  • @cryoraptora303tm2
    @cryoraptora303tm2 Před 5 lety

    She lays more than 5-6 eggs. They lay 20-30 eggs at a time. Anywhere from 100-400 eggs per session is normal, with an average of around 150. If you find less it's because they've eaten some. Pretty much every species of cory has a tendency to eat it's own eggs immediately after laying them; I've literally had a female eat her previous deposit while she was laying the next one. Some species do lay less but the bronze cory in particular (which is this species) is one of the species that lays lots of eggs at a time.
    Having said that, if they are breeding for the first time then they will produce very few or no fertile eggs, especially if they aren't fully grown. If they are already fully grown then they have a better chance of producing fertile eggs. If they have laid a lot of infertile eggs then I would imagine that they would be more eager to eat those than the fertile ones; cories are scavengers and tend to prefer eating things that aren't alive. If they sense that the eggs are dead then I would guess that they would be more drawn to them than if there were a lot of fertile eggs. If these haven't bred before then they would probably have produced a lot of infertile eggs, so when you found the spared eggs, there would appear to be a lot less than was originally laid.

    • @cryoraptora303tm2
      @cryoraptora303tm2 Před 5 lety

      @@mladenpasin2857 The albinos may not have necessarily come from the albino parent. It's a recessive trait to the regular colouration. Since they are mixed so often, regulars and albinos readily breed with each other, and as a result the recessive albino genes end up being carried in regular offspring. Occasionally when two regulars who both have recessive albino genes breed, they can spontaneously produce albinos. That's how the first albino was ever created after all ;). Having said that, an albino being involved makes the chances of an albino offspring much greater, so it probably was involved. Obviously if an albino breeds with a regular that has recessive albino genes, the chances that an offspring gets albino genes from both parents and so is albino is much higher.
      My albinos have laid eggs during a breeding session (the regulars were mating and laying like crazy) but I didn't see any mating between the albinos and the male regulars and the eggs weren't viable anyway which leads me to believe they laid eggs in response to chemicals in the water released by the laying regulars, not necessarily because a male had mated with them. I'm 99% they are all aeneus but I know reproductive methods differ between different species of cory so if they are a different species, it could be that the chemical the bronzes use to signify mating signify egg-laying in this species. Who knows *shrugs*

    My cory’s have been showing this behaviour for a while except without the T position or the female carrying eggs in my main tank. I’m guessing that the drop in temp is the trigger rather than the maturity of the fish?
    I never planned to breed corys but might give it a go, I have small breeder tank (12L), sponge filter cycling in main tank and heater. Do I need sand in the breeder? (I can borrow from my main tank if needed) does this sound a bought right? Will be starting Ensuflora today😁
    Sorry for the long reply and once again thanks for sharing the knowledge 👍 much appreciated🙏✌️

      Hi. That drop in temperature is the spawning trigger. You don't need any substrate in the grow out tank just a sponge filter and a heater. The fry will find the food easier with a bare bottom. 😀👍

      @@MARKSAQUATICS *Update* Whilst not being ready to breed these guys yet, they thought other wise. While I was busy in the garden they were busy in my main tank and deposited around 50 eggs on glass and under Amazon sword leaves, this is there first spawn and I have been doing 50% water changer over the past couple of weeks.
      Needless to say I had no infusoria culture ready or walter worms, I ended up putting a foot long piece of bog wood full of nukes and crannies with established java fern and anubias in the breeder tank with siphoned tank water, extra siphon over all my plants to hopefully suck up as much infusoria as poss.
      I believe it was enough as the fry have hatched and have now started feeding on Walter worms, I think I have counted up to 10 fry but as the bog wood is full of holes etc there could be more under it, and they are now becoming free swimming in the water column zipping around having a good ole time👍.
      I think I need to get the bogwood out to fit the sponge filter (Its a pretty big lump of wood🤣 around a foot long) but am scared to in case there are fry hidden in there. I have the same one as you used with the double sponge (this has been running in the main tank for around a month). Or am I best to leave everything as is and just try to angle the sponges as best I can?
      I will update my channel (for family/friends) with a quick video so you can see what I have done.
      Many thanks again Mark YOU are the STAR👍

      Best thing to do is remove the adults from the tank. Or feed them well if you leave them in.

      Hi Mandy .
      If you can remove the adults once they have spawned move them out. If you can't keep them well fed. As for the eggs going bad, if they are healthy fertilised eggs and your tank water is good they will be fine.

    I actually woke up to panda cory eggs in my main aquarium this morning. It was completely unexpected. Once they start breeding how often does it happen?

    • @MARKSAQUATICS
      @MARKSAQUATICS  Před 5 lety

      Ones they start breeding they can lay eggs every 2 to 3 weeks.

      @@MARKSAQUATICS thanks Mark. I was so surprised to see eggs because I only have 2 of them. I only have chain pet stores where I live and just happened to be in there one day and those two pandas had came in by mistake and they looked so pitiful that I brought them home because I was afraid that if they stayed in that store that they wouldn't make it. My plan was to order more online once the weather got warmer because I know that they need to be in groups. I've had them a couple months now and have really fattened them up. I'm assuming that since they're breeding that's a pretty good sign that even though theirs just two of them they're relatively happy and obviously healthy in my tank. I've never raised fry before so I'm definitely going to have to start researching lol. Thank you for all the knowledge you share it's so appreciated.

    That cory in the far back at the beginning isn't the same species as the rest. That's why it's distanced itself and not breeding with them. I'm pretty sure the albino is the same species though. Ime the albinos have a harder time breeding than their counterparts.

    Ventral fins not anal fin. Ventral fins are paied the anafin is singular. The female cory holds the eggs cupped between her ventral fins.
