- Today I head back to visit a dear old friend Mr. Dana Allan and we discuss Corydoras catfish. He has in very short order made a name for himself in the catfish breeding world for his skill and attention to detail in breeding these wonderful little catfish from South America. To date he has beed well over thirty species of Corydoras. Come take a tour of his small breeding space and see how he makes the magic happen.

i have had a community tank (my first fish tank ever) for six months. it is heavily planted (no CO2). There are 5 rosy minnows, 3 leopard danios, 2 zebra danios (lost one to jumping during a feeding- i was still learning), and 1 female petstore Cory and 2 male. yesterday - to my shock and delight - i found TWO baby corydoras! they are already about a half inch in size and seem to be feeding well and not bothered by the other fish! i am so happy!

i used to put ro water in my fridge for a few hours then use it to do a 70% water change and breed my black worm fed sterbais. havent kept fish since i moved 10 years ago but i am moving again soon and will get a few tanks and some corys.
cory's always seem to find a way to come back into our lives

I love corys. I have 4 tanks of them and I'm saving to buy more. I have peppered ( my favorite), bronze, albino, panda, and some that I have been unable to identify. They are caramel brown on top, white on the bottom, and they have a black stripe down each side. The pet store didn't know what they are. They had 3 of them, all in separate tanks. So I rescued all 3 from depression. They are identical. You can't tell one from the other. I can see differences in my other corys.
Favorite fish , they are fun to see a school of them together.

I love corydoras way too much. I want them all 😂. I have fairy corydoras. I ended up accidently breeding some bronze ones a few years ago.... ended up with way over 20 babies 😂

K I'm curious about what look like cool little diy aquarium covers/knobs
we've used all sorts of random brick a brack for lid knobs over the years. wine corks, glass drawer pulls, plastic dice. Gives it your own DIY personalized touch

Thanks for your video! It is very useful. I also have corydoras. I keep and breed (try at least) corydoras venezuelanus orange, Black aeneus, panda and longfin paleatus. I really like corydoras eques. I want to buy these and collect information about them.

He uses the white oak only leaves to help lower pH an add tannins. Make sure to use white oak leaves only, black oaks leave to much sugars in its leaves an some say poisonous because of something that I forget at the moment. Also the Alder cones from the Alder tree, it's usually found near wet grounds but not in it around swamps marshes alot of parks that have a pond or river are good places to find.
We don’t have black oak anywhere near us so not an issue

Corys don’t require much space so the tanks on the left wall are just tens and the one on the end with the ones from Uruguay with the tall dorsal is a 15. The ones on the other rack under the stairs are custom made to fit his space. Sorry I didn’t bother to check dimensions.
But with cory’s floor space is far more important that height.
Ratios best for breeding are group breedings with two males to each female. Now I’m not an expert in breeding corys by any means having bred about 12-15 species and this work for me. Individual species may require different strategies.

This was a great tour , I started off a african cichlids guy breeding and making hundreds of dollars of course that got old after a while...lol now I'm into geophagus rainbows dwarf cichlids and corydoras I just think it's important for any fish breeder to expand and discover new species.... This hobby is just Absolute joy!!!!!

I don’t believe he’s added a book in several decades. This video was filmed almost two years ago now and sadly I haven’t been able to travel there since before the pandemic
Amazing video! I love cories, i currently have Albino and Schultzei Black in 2 separate tanks. The albino’s have spawned again and i managed to get a lot of eggs into a small container with air bubbler. I added a drop op ESHA2000 to prevent fungus. Changing 50% of the water every day with fresh filtered tank water. Hopefully in a few days the teenytiny babies will come out! The Black ones are still young so i will have to wait a while before they hopefully start laying eggs too.
One question after watching this video: in the tank with all the different species, how does he manage to catch all the specimens of one species out when he has to move them? That must be quite a challenge?

The tank in question is his grow out tank. Once they reached the age where he can take them to the wholesaler he catches them all and separates them. Quality captive bred Corydoras are always in demand here in Canada so he has no issue getting rid of them all. Great question. Thank you

Jutland be cautious about amounts you’re feeding, remove any non eaten food quickly, also ensure the system is stable and healthy prior to going through this process. Limiting the amount of fish in the breeding tank etc…

He uses industrial drawer slides. Can be purchased at any home supply store.
Intended for a drawer to support a heavy small appliance etc…
@@themadaquaristI am doing something similar with some 20 longs and will have the ball bearing drawer slides and some wheels on the concrete floor to support some of the weight just in case…I’d hate to drop precious fish if a slide failed even though they can be found to support a lot more weight than a few 160 pound tanks.

So far everything you’ve said makes sense.
When the ice caps melt and all that cold water flow towards the Amazon. It floods the forest. So letting you water level drop for a few weeks, slightly increasing the temp a couple of degrees at the same time. Then a sudden cold water change is often trigger enough.
The addition of lots of rich foods such as live brine shrimp, mosquito larvae etc... frozen bloodworms all help greatly to condition the parents.
Some species may require water chemistry changes as a trigger. Perhaps adding some leaf litter to the aquarium ?
This would grandly lower the hardness and ph. And lastly the male to female ratio is sometimes a factor. Usually two males per female for most species gives the best success

I know this is an older video but just wanted to let you know I learned something and produced over 100 fry of my Venezuelan Red Sailfin Corydoras recently by a fluke chance. I just had shoulder surgery 4 weeks ago and prior to going under, our aquatic group had a swap. Long story short my husband made a deal at the last minute for some Axolotls (that he thought were fish by the way). So here I was raising Axolotls a week before my surgery... Okay from what I read feed them blood worms and change water frequently..okay I can do that one armed no problem. What blood worms they didn't finish I fed my Pea Puffer tank ( that has my above Venezuelan's in ). Two weeks after surgery I needed to hire a friend from my Aquarium group to come help with water changing my 21 some tanks. I maned, or womaned in my case, the water temp while she did the rest. I always put slightly cooler water in all my tanks in chance I get fry from a water change. And sure enough the next day I had eggs all over the Pea Puffer tank! I don't use lids on my tanks and so after two weeks the water evaporation was about 40% down. It triggered them.. and as soon as that happened I started adding up the triggers I had learned, notably the lower water in this video and some of the others started making sense. Thank you that that info was in this video and I do my research or it would have taken me a lot longer to figure it out to do another hatch in the future!

Any updates on the corydoras "aqua-eous"? Not sure of the species, sorry. I thought simulating a dry season by lowering the water level/raising the temp and then conversely lowering the water temperature and raising water level was interesting. I would think this would still highly stress the fish out since the tanks are so small? Wonder if he ever spawned any? Thanks for the vid!
Yes he has spawned the Corydoras eques, and truthfully the his is the standard in breeding species like Corydoras that seasonally have dramatic changes to their environments.
Healthy fish should have no I’ll effects to such sometimes abrupt changes.
As an example not related to Corydoras.

Tell Dane to try a dead fish for his small fry to feed on liquid fry 1 good try a dead fish cut it open i used that and try a mix of mud so the tank gets muddy and use cut up earth worms i have just a 7ft x18x18 now with 165 corys in all kinds all wild caught fish and other cat fish i had 24 2ftx1ft tanks and lots of small plastic tank back in 1966 i set up a fish house bred all kinds of fish even koi gold fish i feed twice aweek now i have all kinds of other fish plecos to live foods they like a dead fish to but all fish like a few bites to when i was breeding fish most of my food was earth worms cut up fine i bred red worms there from horses muck midden around the sides where its turning to soil I got a bucket full and that was my culture fed it kitchen vegetable waste no onions or spicy foods there small marsh red worms i used to match fish and thought yes good fish food i use maggots to crush or blend and sive the skins off there is a good food there its same as bug bites food they use i was doing that back in 1966 its from maggots mix with dry food to a paste drop a bit in and watch the young feed off it . I sent a tube to Pondgaru off youtube said make a filter he did he calls it is new filter have a look on his youtube site typ in new filter it starts off in his daft ways but its good i made a few i use in my tank now takes all the fine particles out and the fish feed off it safe for the tiny baby fish or shrimps .
He misspoke. Said Corydoras julidochromis when he meant C. julii. I do that. What drives me bonkers is aquarists saying Corydora. No singular from Greek.
