I literally woke up to 4 babies and in the past two weeks, I now have 10 babies(that I can actually find lol) Didn't even know I had a Male or Female. But they are in a 20 long heavily planted tank. Awesome surprise!

  • @Calilasseia
    @Calilasseia Pƙed 4 lety +86

    My own experience with Panda Corys, is that they are among the most avowedly social of all the Corys, and as a consequence, a group of 8 is a bare minimum to keep them happy. I had a group of 14 that provided non stop hilarity with their playful antics, because they were in a decent sized group. Also, they are MUCH more sensitive to water conditions and dirty gravel than other Corys, and require scrupulous attention to water changes and gravel suction cleaning to keep them happy. Do that, and they'll not only reward you with their almost mammalian level of cuteness (I liken them to hamsters with fins!) but they'll also start spawning. Mine spawned 110 times in 3 years, so I must have done something right. :)
    If you're able to gather together a decent sized group from multiple suppliers (in order to diversify the gene pool), give them fast flowing, well filtered water and regularly suction cleaned gravel, in a planted aquarium with bogwood arches and caves, they'll reward you with their spawning antics. Which last for five hours at a time, and are conducted at warp speed. I used to joke that if I tried emulating their spawning prowess, I'd end up in a jar at the hospital. :D
    Apart from the chase antics which they're fond of even when not spawning, they indulge in other acts of hilarity when they're happy. As well as surfing the bubbles from my powerhead, one or two of mine took to sitting on big Amazon Swordplant leaves, swaying in the current, for all the world like underwater versions of budgies on swings.
    If you really want to see these fish come alive like nothing else on Earth, devote a suitably large aquarium to a colony of 50 of them. and give them some peaceful midwater companions like Cardinal Tetras. You'll then know why I called my version of this setup the Panda Fun Palace. :D

      My pandas spawn if the temperature of the water drops a few degrees. And mine don't eat their babies so several friends now have tanks of their own pandas. Also, you will really enjoy watching them more if you use sand instead of gravel. They suck sand into their mouth and blow it out of their gills.

    After watching your channel and learning more about my favorite little catfish the Corydoras, (my sons name is Cory also), and I've learned more about the group dynamics of Cory's the more I feel sorry for a Green Corydoras that I found in a little creek in Santa Cruz Calif. While catching Tree Frog tadpoles to raise in an outside Goldfish bowl to teach my kids about them. It had probably been let loose in the creek from someone's aquarium and this creek was in the middle of town, and the only part left running in the open and not underground was a stretch about 100 yards running from under one large street to another. This Cory was very large (compared to what I knew about them at the time) about 3 1/2 to 4 inches long and stood out from the tadpoles as there where no other fish left in this creek. When I was a kid it had Sticklebacks and a very very small Sculpin species that disappeared by the time I was an adult. Santa Cruz is on the North side of the Monterey bay on the central coast and has a very mild Mediterranean climate but can get pretty cool in the winter, at times overnight ice forming on standing waters that didnt have a flow like bird baths and puddles, but this Cory was alive and well in this creek for 3 years that I knew of before I moved and who knows how long it was there before I caught it with my little dip net that day with a bunch of tadpoles!! Poor thing must have been depressed only having company during the early spring to early summer tadpole season, plus to escape from Dragomfly larvae and the big black Diving beetles that have a mean bite, and the little kingfisher I used to see on the telephone wire above the creek catching tadpoles and froglets, probably kept him depressed and terrified!! But by all accounts as long as I lived in that neighborhood he was doing well. I never told anyone about him, and by that time kids weren't bothering to catch "polywogs" like they used to, they had Nintendos and Ataris instead, so he was safer if I never told anyone.

    I've always seen the paleatus called "peppered cory" and the habrosus called "salt and pepper" cory. And the julii and false julii are definitely 2 separate species, they are just often mistaken for each other. Shouldn't matter too much which you get unless you accidentally mix them, then they won't group and bond as nicely (they can tell the difference even if you can't!)

    When I was a kid I had two paleatus cories and I woke up one morning to find a little baby cory that managed to live long enough to be too big to eat, lol. Watching the parents and their baby really solidified cories as my favorite fishies đŸ„ș
    I don't keep fish anymore, but this video has made me want to get back into it someday. It sounds so fun to just get a dozen cories and watch their behaviors. They're such cute and active fish :)

    I bought 15 Corydoras Julii when I set my community tank up 1 year ago. Now I have about 30 (probably more, just those that I can see). I'm loving their pattern and I hope I get many more babies over time. A swarm of like 50 would be awesome! Just seeing them buzz around, sifting sand and being dorky is awesome and corydoras should be part of every community tank. They're also great as cleanup crew in a sense that they lift dirt up and get it sucked into the filter.

      Hi Curtis; We only had around 5 types reaching Montreal in those days. The bronze and albino anaeus were the two most common, and I think I remember panda, banded and a variety we called 'salt and pepper', possibly Julii or Trilineatus, can't remember. But that was it.
      African Chiclids were new to us around 1970, and that's where the energy was. I had no idea so many other corys would enter the hobby. More surprising is how exotics like Archer fish or fresh water Butterfly fish were and are still available. We'd see things like knife fish or lung fish, but thought they'd all be gone soon. Nice to see them still strongly in the hobby, and the availability these days continues to amaze and delight me. Cheers! @@curtis1905

    I love all corys. I have 5 bronze corys and they are incredibly hardy. I have had several heater failures and have moved them to three different tanks and they thrive no matter what. I had them with a betta who made it his special project to annoy them. They did great but it was actually the betta who had to be moved because he was showing signs of stress even though they never bothered him Ever! They’re now in a 55 gallon tank with Himalayan catfish and tons of guppies and everyone gets along great. I never get tired of watching their non stop antics.

I set it up, then went to the local store and they had 3 what I'm pretty sure are Corydoras bilineatus so I took all of them as I knew from past experience they liked being in groups. One unfortunately died of unknown causes last year but the other two still seem happy and active for being just a pair. I live in an area where the hobby is pretty limited so have been unable to track down any of their species but I love these two little corys, always been my favorite genus of pet fish.
