it amazes me how many drivers (with a few exceptions) do not know how their car works. the problem is that hydrolock is expensive to repair and in certain cases it can be devastating for an engine.

TIPS FOR DRIVING THROUGH WATER
First, try to work out how deep the water is. In static shallower water, explore on foot and use a stick to gauge the depth - or watch another vehicle go through. It’s a good idea to keep a pair of wellies or waders in the boot.
If there are other vehicles ahead, wait until they’ve left the water. Unsettled water can make a safe passage more challenging. Drive through the water very slowly at first, then build up momentum. And don’t slip/ride the clutch as this reduces control of the vehicle. Ease off the accelerator as you reach the other side.

It's not salt water though, if it was then it would cause terrible damage. In wintertime when the gritting lorries have covered the road in salt grit to stop freezing, that causes severe damage.

Would driving through water and basically having your hot transmission bathe in water like this damage it?
Why will it get chills?
Differentials and axles have breather tubes and water can get in through there. If the differentials and axles are hot (like after a long drive), the difference in temperature can cause water to enter, especially through the axles bearings and seals. If the vehicle has been traveling for considerable distance, it's best to stop for a bit to let them cool down before attempting to cross water sections. Off road vehicles have extended breather tubes for this.

Watery Gate Lane isn't so much a ford as a road through a pond
When driving through deep water, selecting the Wade Aid feature raises your suspension height to allow the maximum wading depth to be achieved.
To calculate the depth of water adjacent to the vehicle, select the Wade Sensing option from your 4x4 infotainment screen. The touchscreen displays the results along with the maximum wading depth.
The touchscreen and instrument panel display warning messages as the vehicle approaches its maximum wading depth. Warning tones accompany the warning messages. If the wade sensing feature limitations are exceeded, the touchscreen image turns grey and the water level no longer displays.

Even after they see all the other cars sitting in the water or on the other side broke down and they think hey I can make it. They are definitely Darwin Award winning people
