The world of Finetime seems happy and harmonious. But an awful terror is preying on the citizens. Can the Doctor and Ruby make them see the truth before it's too late?

It was absolutely racism. She only ever listened to Ruby, she was awful to the Doctor, the whole time. It was done so well. Ruby was the first one to realise they were racist, the Doctor had to catch up due to so many years as a white person and never experiencing it first hand. That is the same for so many people, we don’t see it because of our own privilege.

    • @jwsel
      @jwsel Před měsícem +23

If you rewatch the episode, there are a lot of things Lindy says and does that are signs of her racism. They are the type of microaggressions that we see every day, but you wonder “was that racist or just someone being a jerk.” It’s only when you put them all together and consider what happened at the ending that you realize, yes, this was all definitely racist.
Just some examples what Lindy says and does:
Blocks the Doctor with a look of disgust, but doesn’t block Ruby.
Repeatedly tells the Doctor that she “hates” him.
Says she thought the Doctor just looked like the earlier person she blocked.
Freaks out that the Doctor and Ruby are in the same room. Why? She works in the same room with other people.
Objects to the Doctor’s tone as “condescending,” but doesn’t do that to Ruby.
Tells her friends that the Doctor will be “disciplined” and she is glad about it.
Tells her friends that the Doctor is not as dumb as he looks. What about his looks would make her think he is dumb?
Gives reluctant thanks to the Doctor for saving her life, adding that he had a duty to do it.
Tells the Doctor that it is maybe okay to have “screen-to-screen” contact, but can’t go with him in the real world. She is very clear that she is speaking to the Doctor when she says she can’t go with “you.” She is not addressing Ruby.
Says nothing when her friends call the Tardis voodoo and say they need to leave so he doesn’t contaminate them.

Yes and that shows that the writers are racist because in real life, people of ALL races are racist. But the Doctor Who writers seem to think that only white people are racist. Rewatch it! And count the micro aggressions…. This episode is about racism. It’s more than the lack of black people in the episode. She called the Dr stupid, dumb, a criminal… She didn’t recognize him the second time she saw him because she thought they all looked the same. She literally called the police on him! The amount of casual racism that goes unnoticed on the first watch is insane.

I'm an old white guy and I noticed quite a few suspect lines from Lindy during the first watch but wasn't sure if she was actually being full-on racist or just a clueless entitled rich-kid brat. But then at the end when the long-haired dude started going full colonizer it was "Ah. Yeah they really are just white supremacists" - and then Lindy has the "screen-to-screen contact" line. So it was all there, subtly built up throughout the episode and the end reveal didn't shock me at all. The Dot AI had a point, and the slugs were literally eating the rich lol. Very clever episode tackling social media addiction/echo chambers, the 1% AND racism all at once

It was 100% about racism, RTD himself said as much in Unleashed (the BTS show), and it becomes infinitely clear on a 2nd rewatch that the hints towards it were there all along. I understand why the episode made you mad, but in a way, it was kinda trying to. You weren't supposed to like Lindy, or any of these people really. But the social commentary and statement that it made, was fantastic imo and very well handled. I might not be black but I am middle-eastern and I did notice the lack of POC and the various micro-agressions while watching; and the ending still shocked me, since I didn't expect them to go there so explicitly. Ncuti's acting in that scene was absolutely brilliant, and made the entire Doctor-lite episode worth it imo. I seriously loved it.

That ending is a gut punch. Oh Andres, I can only imagine how it feels to watch if you have experienced the real-world equivalent. Thank you for sharing that reaction with us, your honesty and vulnerability in doing so is noted and appreciated. I think it's pretty clear that this episode was intended to be exactly the gut punch it was, but it makes sense that it hits harder or different to those who have experienced such things. We're supposed to feel as upset as The Doctor and Ruby are. The final shot of him just closing the door of the Tardis in disappointment gave me chills.
It's an interesting new dimension for The Doctor to experience, the frustration of that rejection when he's offering them the same salvation that he has so many others in the past. There is so much rich storytelling potential that comes from changing The Doctor from always being a cis-het presenting white man. We saw similar moments with Jodi, where The Doctor realized that they had been living with a lot of privilege with their previous faces. It adds new dimensions to a character that has been around the block like few others. Interestingly, the last scene in this was the first that Ncuti ended up shooting for the entire season. Talk about opening with big stakes.
I have encountered Whovians OC both in life and on You Tube, so they're out there to at least some extent. There is at least one Black reactor that I've come across who saw that Ncuti had been cast and started his Who journey with The Church on Ruby Road. It's been neat to see someone experience this jumping on point. His channel is called UgoWatch. Syntell is another that is reacting to both the new season and the 2005 revival at the same time. You might want to check their channels to see what they think of this one.

Bi painfully white late 30's Brit bloke here, this is my favourite Dr Who episode in years.
    Why?
Because I didn't pick up on what was going on at all, I'd just flagged her as an overinsulated biggot who'd get the chance to redeem herself at the end. I didn't expect to like the ending when she got redeemed.
Then she killed Ricky and covered it up, and I realised she was even worse than I had thought and began finding a new appreciation of our Lord and Saviour - the Lamppost.
Then they revealed their true nature, an insulated little racist culture who can't even bare the thought of being saved by a black person. And I realised all those little signs all the way through were there from the start, she was always the monster and I missed it.
It reminded me a fair bit of the end of Cabaret, I won't spoil in case you ever watch it, and it did the same thing for me: threw my own privalidge into sharp relief.
So yeh, I actually rate this one as important. The actress playing the main character did a fantastic job making that evil being believable and just subtle enough not to ping my evidently dull senses.
Also I now stan racist eating slugs and would like to see them appear here please!

On Doctor Who Unleashed, they confirmed that the episode is about racism. Also something else I noticed that not many people have mentioned was the self-appointed "leader" at the end talking about the new planet. He said "we'll find it, tame it, and own it. We'll be pioneers, just like our ancestors". He was obviously talking about colonisation. Lindy also said to the doctor "you were kind. I mean, you saved me, but that was your duty, obviously". Then one of them mentioned getting away from the Doctor before he contaminates them. There were so many microaggressions sprinkled throughout the episode, many of which don't become obvious until a second watch, like Lindy realising the Doctor is the same person she blocked earlier and saying "I thought you just looked the same", and her saying she'll have him "disciplined" when this is all over.

Ricky wasn't as great as people say either. It's maybe the first time the Doctor has experienced being the object of racism/prejudice from humanoid-type beings. It's a really hard line to consider. On the one hand when you look at the world, audiences and in this case especially white audiences need to get their shit called out because we do get complacent, especially here in the UK. On the other hand if you have to deal with racism in your every day life it's going to be exhausting to have it in your fiction too, especially if the setup of the story doesn't build in a warning unless you're picking up the clues.
I am glad that the episode that directly centers the question of the Doctor as a black time traveler takes place in a future that's recognisable to us rather than the past, so it can't be taken as a "Wasn't the past stupid for racism? Good thing it's over." story.

Genuinely all around, I think it was good.
    As adult media.
The issue is this episode tackled topics head on that were explored in a way adults can understand but children would probably struggle with. And it’s the core of the episode, it’s not like as a child you can follow along the obvious plot and the message is in the subtext for the adults to understand on another level.

It could have been just about that and it would be an "ok" episode. However, the social media aspect is a bit of a red herring. The episode is ACTUALLY about racism and the echo chambers and bubbles we lock ourselves into. RTD was asked about how will it be to go back in time with a black Doctor, but his commentary on this is that racism still exists now, and will still exist in the future. We think of racism as overt 1950s-era racism... but it's actually much more sinister and hidden. There were micro-aggressions from Lindy throughout the episode, from the very beginning. On rewatch, you'll notice them. They are, pun intended here, peppered throughout the episode. Lindy is a racist, and so is everyone else in Finetime (except Ricky, the only one who turns off his bubble and expands his mind by reading). Every single person, except the Doctor is white. The surviving members of Finetime would rather risk the great outdoors (where they will likely die) than go with the Doctor, simply because he's not white. It's meant to make you angry.
This was masterfully done. The fact that a lot of people didn't pick up on the racism was intended... it's something you catch later and on rewatch... and then you notice all the breadcrumbs. THIS is real racism.

This series was shot following Covid, I think the scripts were Covid proofed in the writing stage, incase of further lockdowns.
(Small casts, open spaces, etc )
Certain industry’s continued Covid measures for a while after the last lockdowns too
Also I think Ncuti’s film schedule for other projects delayed during Covid affecting the DW production so it was working around a lot TBF, worth it to have Ncuti as the Doctor in my opinion , he’s smashing it!!

I couldn’t even watch the whole episode. The main character pissed me off too many times. I was angry and upset from how she acted from the get go.

This episode is full of microaggressions for Lindy's character, she's already clearly privileged but it was something I noticed once I realised just how _white_ the citizens of Finetime are. The real turning point is when she gets Ricky killed despite him fighting for her life, and her being so racist to Ncuti. All of them being so unaccepting that they wouldn't even accept being saved by The Doctor purely for him not being white and not for any logical reason

i am pacific islander and I love Doctor Who been watching since the 80s. He's always been a white man, I dont care. He's never been gay before, I dont care. But Rosa I do care because that episode seemed so blatantly about racism and that bothered me

The tragic thing about this episode (for the Doctor, I couldn't care less about the racists) is that if this had happened to a white regeneration of the Doctor, it's possible their racism would never have come up. Poor Doctor is just too compassionate. :/

Yep, it was about race. Lindy was very condescending to Rubes so there's some classism there, too, but Ruby was at least given the time to speak while The Doctor was blocked right away. And the way Lindy couldn't even LOOK at him when she was "thanking" them? Gross.

Re: pulling stats like that. What a strange thing! How does that even work? Are they excluding LGBT and neurodivergents to get their "Normalised" poll stats? Because I am assuming right now that we are the outliers from their beautiful stats graphs.
There is WAY too much to unpack with this idea.
Unfortunately I've suffered too much psych damage from the cis-het normativity universe to make any kind of rational analysis on it. At all. I can't think of anything I can add to this statement that won't make me sound unhinged.
I understand your anger at this episode. It was a call out on nasty behaviours and attitudes, and as a target of those behaviours irl, I can see how that grates.
The actress did a great job of making me hate her character. It was all done to quietly drive home a point. Trying to put the audience into your shoes, turn the light on about the issue, that sort of thing.

I dunno the ending to this one felt very unsatisfying. I don't mind a twist at the end, but in this I didn't care about the plight of the obnoxious characters, and I didn't "feel" the Doctor's rage and frustration at not being able to save them because of that. Also why did the dots go to the effort of generating the slugs?

Hated this one didn't feel like doctor who it felt like a kids tv show, the only thing that got me was seeing the doctor cry at the end
