RTD is a master of misdirection. He gives you the Bubble as the problem, but its the Dot that is the villain. Every scene between Lindy and the Doctor is racist/white supremacy but RTD has you looking at her as just being a spoiled brat. Lindy doesnt recognize The Doctor as the man she blocked because... they all look alike - she almost says it! I missed it on first watch

That's the thing with "subtle" signs.... it's like the interpersonal equivalent of blips of static. COULD it mean something? perhaps, but it might NOT. Which is where his retrospective fails... it asks you to stare at clouds looking for things shaped like Waldo... when you never have any reason to be sure what you're looking for is real.

@@tenmark7055 He over-misdirects though and this time he spent so much time misdirecting he never wrote out what was the reality of this strange world. This isolated, but technically advanced colony is physically cut off from their homeworld... which is actually dead, they just don't know it yet. But that's it... a throwaway that hints at this problem being bigger than their tiny colony, but with no explanation at all. The Doctor's anguished flailing at the end makes LESS sense in hindsight... since... he apparently DOESN'T KNOW the HW is dead.
There's also no hint of a rationale for the elitist behavior. He just doesn't touch it until his "rug pull" and then it whiffs because it's so shallow and undeveloped. They're so against associating with the "wrong" people they'd rather risk being eaten by slugs.... But no hint is given of any reason why. And no, the old saw of "---ism is irrational" doesn't fly. People THINK they have reasons, the question is if the reasons are valid. What is the reason here? It hints that everyone who's "bad" and wrong was culled.... but does not explain how/why/when/where, or even WHO.
Sure it's obvious as a metaphor when seen from a certain angle, but.... it's about as substantial as tissue paper.

The final scene was in fact the very first thing Ncuti filmed for DW, demonstrating just how powerful and emotive he is as the Doctor.
Also, full dues to Callie Cooke who plays Lindy. She’s literally in every scene and really carries the episode. She starts as appealing and charismatic, if shallow and dopey, and we begin to sympathize with her as she struggles to cope, but gradually becomes more annoying and offensive until we utterly loathe her, along with the rest of her spoilt, rich, racist clique. Really great performance.

No, I think not seeing the racism shows how you (and I) think better of people: not assuming racism as the answer for the behaviour that could have been attributed to dumb-spoilt-brat personality... but it just fits better in the end, especially her attitude that betrays her not seeing others as potential equals.

And that's the whole point of the episode, in that, it aims to point out the white privilege that viewers may not realise they even had and also encourages people to step outside their 'bubble' to see what's going on in the real world.

Same. There was one single moment during the episode that I thought "Wow, that sounds like racism", but I dismissed it because I thought he was treating him badly because of a class thing, not racism. Because she is also a bit dismissive about Ruby, because she sees her as a worker, but looking back I can see that she treats the Doctor worse than she treats Ruby.

@manticore5733 for me I think it's probably more that I've experienced several kinds of discrimination (I'm a lower class, overweight, autistic goth, and now also old) but being white, racism isn't one of them. I just put it down to elitism and the general "I'm better than you" attitude I've experienced so often, and I'm ashamed because as much as I strive to be aware of ALL kinds of bigotry(it's disgustingto me), I ultimately saw it from my own perspective. The idea that we see the good in people is a lovely thought, and I hope it's true in your case❤️ but believe me, I've had to learn to see the bad, for my own protection 😕

This episode is so densely layered. It basically positions Finetime (and by extension any society built on an idea like racial supremacy) as incapable of real love, or even the skills necessary for basic survival. Ricky was a miraculous exception (even in the brief interactions we see between he and the Doctor, he’s at least trying to be accommodating) but ultimately embers like him are doomed to be cannibalized.

Not to mention in the end, a society built upon exclusion and hate eventually destroys itself. Even the slugs are victims; they were created for the sole purpose of eating everyone to deal the maximum amount of pain and anguish possible, and will likely die of starvation now in the remnants of the civilization. And the DOT system, a product of that society, will die out as well eventually.

@@ThePonderer Is it though? we have so little information that it's hard to make conclusions. But the first thing I picked up on in the episode was that these people in this city are cut off from EVERYTHING.
Their families live on the HW, but are all dead, and none of them has ANY idea since they don't talk to them regularly. Also, everyone is between 17 and 27. There are no children here, none of them was BORN here. So, while they may have been here enough years to settle in... it's not actually all that long. And ALSO.... The big red herring to me... why here?
This is an isolated colony away from seemingly everything. It appears to be the only colony in the solar system. They're fully reliant on the red dot to run their lives... because whoever placed the colony set it up that way. People from their homeworld... which is now a lifeless ruin.
We don't know why! All we know is that the main girl's parents paid for her current position, and that's it. It suggests the colony was built by people who were essentially... storing their children there. But we don't really have any idea why.

I just hope one day the disappointed fans crowd get to rewatch great episodes like this one with the appreciation they deserve. Whilst the final 'twist in the end', reveal/lesson,was about reading racism and its implications; the theme of living in a bubble subtly suggested - often via throwaway lines - the synchronisity between the bubbles of race, class, social media, gated worlds/communities, and colonial settler projects. RTD is a great writer, drawn to big themes and not hard scifi mechanics, which receive the bare minimum exposition or are left mysterious or fantastic, in favour of thematic development. This seems to be a hurdle for some watchers in appreciating what is really an unusually intelligent show.

I've seen very different responses to the episode, and it feels like the point at which you say "wait, is she racist?" correlates to how much privilege the person has. Microaggressions slip by society so easily. I regret that when I first watched the episode I was in a bit of a compromised state mentally and wasn't able to get a good gauge of how I would have naturally reacted because I'm curious how soon I would have caught on if I hadn't been.

And to think it might have been a good episode with a little work. For instance, I could see the Doctor finding out that the Dot had become sentient and realized it was being used by these people in a selfish way (the Bubble). Not having the ability to keep itself running (power systems etc) without the aliens (they're not humans!), it decides to create the slugs and kill off everything, including, eventually, itself. This scenario would give the Doctor a chance to save it and the aliens while also educating the aliens on their selfish behavior. That would be more like Dr Who IMHO.

I enjoyed the episode but I'm finding the amount of disingenuous handwringing and and virtue signalling that some reviewers are engaging in rather tiresome. "What, you mean you didn't see from the start that there were only white characters aside from the Doctor! You racist!" Good grief, there is nothing unusual about a TV show cast being predominantly (bear in mind that unless you're explicitly looking at them it's entirely possible that you could just miss a non-white face in the background because you were concentrating on the foreground, also some of the people we see are already partly consumed so we only see their shoes and maybe a bit of their lower leg covered in trousers/pants so maybe they were Black), from one group, that almost certainly is a problem but you can't ding someone for not picking up on something when it is totally normal. Did these reviewers complain that shows like Desmond's and The Cosby Show didn't have many white characters? Probably not because there would be nothing unusual about a show set in a Black barber's shop or around a Black family having an almost entirely Black cast. In real life most people's friends group is mostly people like them. There is a reason we have the saying "Birds of a feather flock together", we're more likely to be friends with people with whom we share common traits. Where there's a criticism to be leveled it's at show runners and casting directors who don't generally cast Black performers unless their Blackness is called for in the role. Although, Sci-Fi tends to be better at that due to tending to be the poor relation of media.

@@shanajeangedeon9060 I’m talking about reviews that I’ve seen, not whatever fiction you’ve concocted for yourself.
The reference to poor relation is that generally budgets have been lower for Sci-Fi than comparable other shows. This has meant that often Sci-Fi shows have hired Black performers who don’t get cast as much due to, probably subconscious in many cases, racism so don’t command as high pay as white performers of similar ability. Hence, if you look back at Sci-Fi shows they have often cast really good Black performers more often than non-Sci-Fi. They’ve also tended to cast more women, especially those who maybe don’t fit the ‘Hollywood Ideal’.

@@StephenBoothUK Again, tf are you reading or watching? Just because someone else is having a different experience than yours doesn't mean it's impossible or made-up. To me *you* sound like you've concocted a reason to be mad rather than just not listening to stupid people, its really not that difficult to search up reviews and/or read the comments for yourself and *see* that the vast majority of people don't give a shit about the people who didn't notice the little details at first, most people had to rewatch it to find those hints in the first place.

@@shanajeangedeon9060 I’m mostly watching the reviews that CZcams suggests or that get posted to the various Who groups/pages I’m on on Facebook. I’m not going looking for them, they’re just there. I have noticed that those reviewers who do the handwringing and virtue signalling that I’ve seen are all white whereas not one of the Black reviewers I’ve seen has focused on that, they’ve tended to see the episode as more about wealth privilege with the racism as an afterthought. Indeed, I just watched one video that was a conversation between a white woman and a Black man about the episode where she heavily focused on seeing the racism from Lindy and he countered with seeing it as being more about her being wealthy and pretty, then pointed out that if RTD was making a point about race then it was odd that he’s not employed a single Black writer, director or producer to work on a a series that stars the first Black Doctor.
There is an issue of lack of diversity in film and TV casting, but it feels disingenuous that some reviewers (note that from my first comment I’ve been clear it’s some reviewers, a significant number but not all) try to denigrate other viewers for not picking up early on that all the cast (aside from Ncuti) were white, something that is far from unusual.

@@StephenBoothUK The fact you're using *recommended* videos and Facebook is why you're getting some people that "denigrate other viewers" because if you look up the reviews yourself, or just use any social media platform that isn't Twitter or Facebook, you'll get almost overwhelming amounts of people( *plus* their comments sections) that is people talking about how interesting it was for RTD to put such realistic depictions of microagrressions throughout the episode that easily go unnoticed if you don't already know what to look for. CZcams (like most social media platforms) has an algorithm with it's own implicit biases programmed into it, it will recommend videos that are more likely to cause diverse opinions, and therefore more views for it to process, or videos that are so incredibly personalized people within only a specific group are recommended; *always* look for videos yourself rather than rely on CZcams recommendations. Facebook, and Twitter, in general do tend to draw toxic crowds unless you know how to navigate them and keep within a specific interest circle.

The racism thing was such a disappointment: the implication that if a group is white only then they must be racist.
They had already established that they were a group of 17 to 27 year olds. That excludes the doctor.

A real Doctor finds a way to help people whether their society approves or not. Because helping people is the right thing to do. And the Doctor makes the big decisions. This guy throws a tantrum and cries. The Doctor used to take action.

Stars, I love your reaction once again. You literally live these episodes! This is therapy for you, each week, right? 😅😢🫂. Methinks the emotional moments of this series are far from over.....
What I like best is how Russell left didn't explicitly state 'racism'. He let the viewers interpret that from the scenes, and even at the end leaves it open for everyone to have a unique take, once the true nastiness of Lindy and the others comes through. This is the society in which they live...where everyone is young, rich, 'perfect' and white... The way they look at the Doctor is disgusting. Heavy on the issues, this one!
