    Man, I really, REALLY appreciate you posting this. This has been the biggest pain in my ass since we moved into a house with this fridge. Thank you so much. The best part of this video is how succinct it is; no prolonged, dragged out dialogue about how you came to own the fridge, or your childhood, or how you feel about broken ice makers. Told me exactly how to fix it within 4 minutes.
    Thank you. Seriously.

      To others who are less handy: you should just call Samsung! They repair it for free!
      I was in the same situation as you. We moved into a new house that had this fridge, so I had no idea when or where it was purchased. I called Samsung, they sent a tech who ordered parts and installed them the following week. $0 charge, they just asked for the serial number and fixed it with zero hassle.

    Bought my Samsung in 2016. Contacted Customer service last week. Rep was very courteous. Explained the ice maker issue to her. tech came to my house, replaced the whole thing free of charge although out of warranty!! I asked the tech what buttons to press if I wanted to defrost in the future he said Freeze + Lighting but you won't need to do that any more. I liked his confidence. Thanks Samsung.

    I saw your video after fighting with this thing for 2 years. I took it a step further and silicones all of the seams between the ice maker and the fridge. All of this after defrosting, then again with a hairdryer, and then letting the fridge get back to normal operating temperature before inserting the ice maker drawer again. If this doesn’t work I’m pulling the whole unit out of the fridge for the extra space and buying a countertop ice maker. I’ll post again with the results once the verdict is clear.

    This is great information. I've been fighting the problem and doing the FD every month or so. Lots of videos out there to walk you thru the procedure, but this is the first one on how to FIX it. The air gap makes a lot of sense, especially if you live in a humid area. Every time the fridge door is opened the moist air floods in. The air gap allowed it to go right to the icemaker. THANKS!!!!

    Check the fill tube. The repair techs pushed the fill tube further into the ice maker compartment and it solved the problem. No ice build-up for over a month now. They said that the delivery guys might have accidentally pulled out the fill tube. This caused the water to drip and splash outside the top portion of the ice maker and freeze. All good now!

    I'm on my second frige, the first one was repaired on warranty, when the ice maker froze up again, Samsung replaced the entire fridge. Then the ice maker failed again and is out of warranty. It is a design flaw and they know it. I tried the defrost 4 times and still can't remove the ice bin...stuck solid. I unplugged the fridge and hope I can remove the ice bin. This the 4th time in a year I've had this problem. The $2800 I paid for this piece of junk is now a sunk cost and I'll try to buy one that works. Someone mentioned Whirlpool, but they bought all the US Manufacturers, so they are basically the same design. I'm glad I kept my 15 year old Amana with the ice maker in the freezer. No problem other than inconvenient. Thanks for the silicone sealer tip. If I can remove the ice bin, I'll try it.

    I have basically the same problem with ice build up in this icemaker. At the beginning I just defrosted it again and again. Then I realized I'm not the only one and that it normally should work properly. I read a lot articles about sealing the gaps at ice maker and started so doing it from the outside with no progress, then removing all parts from the inside and sealing the possible gaps from the inside. But especially when removing the icemaker compnents I realized that the most critical ice buildup was at the top of the spillover tube. The tube has a heating wire wrapped around it covered in a metallic tape. This heating wire ends approx. an inch before the top end of the tube. I added some more insulation to it with the hope that this will help. Later I found an article which mentioned that the newest version of this tube has the heating attached until the top end and not ending before. Of course my ice maker froze again and I checked it every few days and realized, that the spillover seems to freeze over at first and then the rest from the icemaker. So I dissassembled everything again, removed the tape with the heating wire carefully from the tube and reattached it to the tube starting directly at the top of the tube. I've done this 2 weeks ago and still no ice buildup at the tube and the rest of the icemaker still looks ok. I will monitor this but currently I'm convinced that I've solved the problem and defrosting it once a year for the future would be ok for me (was every 4-6 weeks in the past).

    I tried this fix along with a bunch of others. Cleaned all the drains, leveled, sealed the water input, adjusted the bias temps in the service menu, checked the seals, made drip clips for the defrost loop. I also endlessly needed to run the defrost. So often that i removed the front panel and destroyed the beeper that runs for and hour when you defrost. None of that helped. Eventually the solid block of ice froze it up so much that the bucket shattered from the auger and the drip tray fell apart. I was ready to buy a new fridge. They are expensive so I took one last gamble. I bought a whole new internal Ice maker unit, bucket and Y clips. The last year it has been making ice again without any attention. The ice is never wet and the auto defrost cycle seems to work.

    Note : call Samsung! This repair is COVERED!
    We picked up the food grade silicone from a local appliance shop & I cleaned surfaces with alcohol then sealed. We defrosted / unplugged the fridge for 24 hours then caulked the inside and outside of the ice maker housing on the bottom left.. (long side that meets the left fridge wall). I pulled out the ice maker and auger assembly to do this. Let it cure for 24 hours then reassembled and turned on.
    Note: take the bottom back panel off & use an extra fan to add cooling until the fridge reaches correct temperatures.

    I have a Samsung fridge which has had MANY service calls. After about 8 service visits, they finally did the factory repair procedure (that didn't include replacing the motherboard) and the ice maker still leaks.. it doesn't completely freeze up any more but it still leaks all of the time and doesn't produce ice the way that it should.. it DOES make A LOT of sense that the gap that allows the warmer temps from the refrigerator to enter the ice maker compartment is probably a main contributor to the issue.. maybe it requires both fixes in order to work properly?

    I sealed the ice box from the outside. it worked for a few months may be 6 or 7 then issue started again, may be the silicon cracked up, or may be air found its way in every time I dispense ice. if you look at other ice makers like Kenmore, they have the ice maker compartment open to the freezer. so when you open the freezer door you are exposing the ice maker to the atmosphere, yet no frosting, no problem. The problem with Samsung, is the way ice is dispensed and that there is no auto defrost cycle (manual defrost is available). If ice is dispensed from the front, then it wouldn't get stuck in the side channel. auto defrost cycle every day for 5 minutes would melt any frost in areas where it is a problem. It is a design issue. I am not sure you can completely prevent air from entering the ice box. unless you don't dispense ice at all. sealing is just delaying the frost build up.

Wondering what recommended temps are for both fridge and freezer portions - I have a feeling those temps play into this issue.

    How much caulk do you have to insert into the crack?
    Does the caulk filling the crack satisfy all issues?
    Does cold air cause the caulk to shrink?
    Will the caulk lose some strength over time?
    Does laying the caulk between the crack cause any strange odors?
    Lastly, are you satisfied with the job your caulk provided?

    • @HomeRepairHub
      @HomeRepairHub  Před 3 lety

      Just enough to fill the gap. it doesn't require a lot. I would say for most people this does not seem to fix all the issues. For me I went from having to defrost weekly to once every couple of months. I think most have seen improvement by doing this but the amount varies. If you use a caulk designed for low temps the answer is no. The one I use in the video is food safe and designed for low temps. I have not seen any issues with the caulk. I think it depends on the caulks. If you use the stuff I use, no. Again it's safe for food storage and low temps. I would say it has improved my situation. I was defrosting the ice maker weekly.

    Not entirely the problem. I used blue painters tape to check it out. You can barely see the tape and it's been there for over a year now. The big problem is in the icemaker itself. You must pull out the icemaker and either replace it or break it down to where you can see the pockets where the ice forms. You can see and feel the pockets with your fingers. If you feel a crusty build-up in some of the pockets that is where your real problem is. In this case I would recommend purchasing a new ice maker because when ice forms in these pockets it wont drop out so when the maker cycles to fill the tray it drops the extra water and it overflows and starts forming the ice coating everywhere. Hence, a clogged up icemaker.

    Just curious - what's the reason for the silcone caulking?

    • @HomeRepairHub

      There is a gap between the ice box and the refrigerator, so cooler air gets into the ice box allowing the ice to melt. This cause a significant amount of the frost issues. I recently updated this video. This is only a portion of the total fix. It is also a good idea to contact Samsung and see if they can resolve the issue. czcams.com/video/wmCv9jmxd_o/video.html

    Do I need to collect the water from the ice when defrosting or just let it do its thing?

    • @HomeRepairHub
      @HomeRepairHub  Před 3 lety

      I usually pull the tray out, let it run, then take a towel and clean up the water when it's done. If there is water in the ice maker box it won't hurt anything. You will have water in the ice maker box after the defrost cycles runs.

    Would you suggest that the root cause is warm(er) air getting into the ice maker area? Hence, solution is better insulation all around, particularly in that area where the gap is? So even better solution is to insulate/block/gasket any warm(er) air flow from the fridge itself into the ice maker?

    • @HomeRepairHub
      @HomeRepairHub  Před 4 lety +2

      I am not a refrigerator repair person but what you are saying sounds correct. I am also wondering if part of the issue is related to the ice maker not stopping when the tray is full. But I do believe that warmer air getting in is the primary issue.

      @@HomeRepairHub I'm a chemist (believe it or not most chemists are good at this). Your video is good. The "full" sensor it's either an opto-interrupter or thermo-interruper. Light or cold sensor, probably a light beam being blocked, but could be ice touching it.... if frost inhibits its proper shutdown mechanism, it keeps making ice

      I would concur with the warm moist air infiltrating through the large hole at the front bottom of the ice maker hopper. If you are in the habit of holding the left door open , more warm air gets in. It’s usually blocked by the flapper in the ejection chute. As an aside, there is a small fan far in the back that circulates air inside the ice maker chamber. My guess is that is intended to reduce frost buildup. When the frost does build up to a significant level, it blocks that airflow & it gets much worse. If you go through all the defrosting steps, just make sure that the fan is not shrouded by frost.

      @@thefullmontypythn It seems that the solution he is suggesting is to keep outside air from entering the ice maker. My assumption is that this outside air brings in moisture that freezes, and creates build up over the ice machine. It is this ice that then tricks the sensors into thinking that the ice maker is "full", and it then stops making ice. I'm not sure why you said it would "keep making ice".

    • @thefullmontypythn
      @thefullmontypythn Před 4 lety +2

      @@zzcooldude I agree with the outside air causing a frost build up that tricks the full sensor. In one scenario, the frost blocks the sensor, and it "stops making ice". In another scenario the frost forms "above" the sensor where it doesn't stop the ice maker. In that scenario the ice maker "keeps making ice". It tries to discharge the ice but it gets blocked up above the sensor and sits there. The ice maker keeps making ice with nowhere to discharge it causing a second issue--a bunch of actual ice cubes fused together above the sensor. I've experienced this. I don't really have a major problem with my own fridge, but people keep replying to me so I respond. Don't worry about me, I am reptile, I am douche bag.
