  • In this video Dada interprets Patanjali’s definition of Yoga “Citta vrittih nirodhah” in a more logical and practical way than is commonly understood. It aligns with the real world which requires that action be done in order for success to be achieved. In the same way, meditation is an action albeit subtle which ultimately ends in the state of “actionlessness” or infinite peace.

The mantra at the end of the video is " Baba Nam Kevalam". Baba means "my most beloved One," Nam means "name of" or "to identify with," and Kevalam means "only." So the meaning of the mantra is "My most Beloved is the only One." You can find the full version of the recording here: • Video

This helped me to realize why my meditations were becoming completely fruitless, all I was doing was observing, with the intention to not get involved at all. I became much more anxious by doing this. I feel what was missing was the subtle effort that should go hand in hand with the observation, a kind of corrective or redirecting force.

Regarding Patanjali, Baba says in his book Yoga Sadhana, that the suspension of the propensities does not necessarily lead to the unification of the unit mind with the Cosmic mind. Hence Patanjali's definition of yoga is not acceptable.

Maybe both approaches are correct and are required? There is a right use of the mind, but it is also true that you can't do anything either (to free yourself).
It is difficult to advance. However, neither approach would discredit the Yama/niyama so keep strong on those and leave the final work always in God's hands.

When we are not in a high level of consciousness the ego help you to strive to be more inventive, or to have better service, have better business in competition, be a better sportsman, or a better artist or singer, etc.
Therefore the ego help you to feel that you have an identity, like I’m a good engineer, I’m a good mechanic, I’m a good singer, etc. that help you to boost your confidence and help you to live a happier life until you know a better spiritual level for happiness.
Our ego is the most frightening thing that we carry with us around. It serves only to kill you inside out. Kill your spiritual progress, kill the knowledge that you have a soul, and kill your body too. Such is the force of the ego. It is just a kind of fixed belief in yourself, that you are this and you are that, and whatever you think is right. This is the kind of thing that stops you from knowing the truth, of knowing your great Self, because you holding on to your small self.
You identify yourself with your small self, it is even not your small self that what we call smal self doesn’t exist.
    The small self
Whatever you think you are, is just a bunch of thoughts, a bunch of gained knowledge, a bunch of believe. It is not even yourself; it is just the thinking of the mind and all the knowledge that you have gained somewhere, such is the ego. Even no one there watching the ego still wants to show off, still wants to prove that he is right.
That’s why it is difficult to talk to your husband, or your wife, your children, your friends, or relatives, about the path that you are going. Even though it is correct and logical to their ears even. Even if they know it’s correct they just don’t want to follow because it is you who said it. Who are you to tell me that you know better than I am!
This is the trouble with the ego. And this is how civilizations have perished, that’s how many galaxies have been destroyed and disappeared, because of the ego and the mind.
The ego is nothing; it is actually made of a bunch of learned knowledge and then you think it is you. That you know this, that you know that. All the knowledge put together, what you learned from others, or society, or books, and you think it is you. You think you know it all and that anything else is not right, anything that you haven’t heard of cannot be true.
It is very difficult to recognize our ego
Once you set your ego at some certain point of your spiritual practice then you stop right there, you never will go anywhere. Our problem is that we don’t recognize our ego, if we do recognize it than we can cut it off, but it is very difficult. We don’t even know that we are proud, we don’t even know that we have ego.
For other people it may be as plane as the nose in front of your face, for yourself it is not that clear. Ego is the worst enemy of humankind, it makes so much trouble, causes so many war, causes so much hatred and discord around the world. It is the ego that does it, nobody else. If we can check our ego and keep it under control then the world would be peaceful. Never mind sitting there and praying for world peace! Don’t need to pray Just check your ego and everything will be peaceful. Each one think he knows better even better than the Master.
Ego is the last to go
It is a knife with two edges, if we don’t handle it well it can flair-up problems. If we have too much ego than it can cause us conflict with other people and stop us from spiritual elevation.
We have to meditate more and serve others more than we can go higher. Whenever we go higher the ego will have to leave because the ego is on the lower level of consciousness. When we achieve a better shield to make us feel good and confident and happy like our spiritual elevation, and our vision get higher and better, than we are happy and confident in any case and we are on a higher mood, at that time the ego will leave.
When we meditate and help others the ego will leave sooner or later, or leave gradually one step at the time, the ego will leave layer by layer.
Here on a lower level of physical consciousness the ego act also as a motivator, as a shield for striving for betterment, in that case it is helpful. But when the ego is too heavy of cause than it is more of a hindrance, like a tree overgrown in a path or in your garden it need trimming.
If you listen to your ego too much you forget yourself
You forget your great Self, your intelligent Self, your wise wisdom Self. The ego separates us from our true Self. The ego is the greatest enemy. Sometimes the ego destroys a marriage, destroys a relationship, destroys friendship, destroys the love between mother and son, father and daughter, because of the ego. The ego causes conflict all the time. This is how civilizations have perished, that’s how many galaxies have been destroyed and disappeared, because of the ego and the mind.
There is no completely harmless person next to you. Only saintly people true saints are harmless. They only bring good to you. They don’t ever harm you, even invisibly or subconsciously. But normal people half saint half human they are still harmful to you. If they don’t have the heart to change their habit or their way of thinking inside, they still can carry negative influence and can make your life trouble
    . 🙏💗⭐

Namaskar, the reason we do mantra meditation is because meditation is based on the principal, "As you think, so you become". So we should chose an object of ideation, which has a purifying and expanding effect on our consciousness. By meditating for example, on "Baba Nam Kevalam" (love is everywhere and is the essence of everything.) Meditators often find that they are able to find the solution to their problem after meditating, but we shouldn't waste our time meditating on a particular problem.

It is important to replace cruder thought of feeling with subtler one. The subtlemost is the ideation of divine consciousness. So it is important to ideate in supreme every now and then.

As it is so common not to know or to doubt and then to rediscover, it seems like not knowing but still smiling, still breathing and letting the sound come out as though the true situation is even more wonderful than you ever imagined… that would be something like not knowing but still doing prayer.
I feel I should say something about the main theme: passive versus active. Without confidence that there is a thoughtful response coming from CC, one can worry that prayer is impotent and that can slide into a belief that prayer is passive, like asking for favors without being completely worthy of them. The process, the smiling, breathing, moving of the body into an intentional position and place, considering what to encode as in say, sing, whisper, think, form into art, manifest as movement, repeat, read, etc as prayer is far from passive and benefits from subtlety.
I learned a lot from Dada’s story of the morning he awoke he was so, so, so tired and had many responsibilities, even he wasn’t sure that he had enough energy to get through the day. I would describe his solution as prayer. I will try to remember which video it is in.

Namaskar Dadaji, great video as always, I like your interpretation of Patanjali's definition of Yoga. One thing though... Don't you think it is also appropriate to mention that yours is a mere re-interpretation of a misleading definition, and the correct definition has been given by Shiva and reinforced by Anandamurti? As you said if you are sleeping, knocked out or even in catalepsy your vrttis are suspended but that is not Yoga. Yoga is the merging of unit into cosmic consciousness, and even in Samadhi, unless one reaches Moksha, one cannot enjoy the blissful state without the vrtti of spiritual desire. I think your audience would appreciate if you mentioned that, and it would provide a more comprehensive understanding, what do you think?

I think that those who try to understand will understand. Every video cannot be an encyclopedia of everything and should not be, so an interested viewer has to build an understanding episode by episode. At some other time, when some of our speakers will specifically talk on definitions of yoga, this topic will be elaborated further.

Instead, as one incarnation commanded...ponder: "thou shall not want"... while trying to answer the question "what do I want"? In this way, the ego is given permission to forget itself because the answer should always be the same.

Meditation is more of a Swiss army knife rather than a hammer. There is guided meditation (subconscious reprogramming), focused meditation (things like Reiki for healing), contemplation meditation, etc.
Meditation is a tool to open the mind, trying to pigeonhole meditation will only result in the pigeonholing of your mind.
