How to achieve a super high gloss clear coat

- Solution to get super high gloss on a clear coat that you applied yourself or on a clear coat strongly damaged. The gloss is obtained by wet sanding then polishing. A wax is then applied to protect the varnish.

@@riskromer9773 hi guys, chrisfix here
For a drive-way job and not being fully prepped for this. I'm pretty happy with your results. Suggestion for those who try this, use a smaller sanding pad to help get more results and control around the corner and side of each panel and make sure to refine the sanding by going up to 3000 grit or 4000 grit before going to the next stage of cut polish.
Good thing you had captions because I wouldn't have known what a Mecro Fibbiber cloth was.

Looks much better but be sure to never wax fresh clear-coat and only use a microfiber towel to buff. I would definitely keep the speeds lower on that DA machine. Clear from a can will likely be very thin and if it wasn't baked/cured at mid-high temps, it is fairly weak so you will very quickly and easily burn right through it. Paint from the factory is baked at temps between 250-400F because the parts are OFF the car. Even a professional body-shop can't match those temps if the part is still on the car because other parts can't take high heat exposure (tires, electronics, etc.) That is why factory paint is usually superior.
Does a pro job hiding the voice and the face.
Does a pro job making the car look from a orange peel to a perfect mirror.
Mirror reveals face.

Sorry to be off topic but does someone know of a trick to log back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot the account password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me
@Leandro Gerardo Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.

Nice video. I’d absolutely start with nothing rougher than 1,000 grit, though.
If anyone is nervous about polishing (maybe it’s your first time and you don’t want to burn through the finish), sanding up to 5,000 grit before polishing helps, and never wipe the panel down immediately after you polish. Give the clear a second to reset.
2,000 is minimum I’d say tbh. Especially with the cheaper clear coats the DIYers (like me) use. Always start smooth then if need be go rougher
@@scottwhitley3392 The lowest i go is 1200 up to 3000 then polish
@@Bavstarr what if I sand by hand
@@fitnessja7047 i sand by hand and DA
800grit by hand are fine if you sure that your clear coat are thick enough
But using 800 grit on a da? That scared me too lol🤣
Nice job. Finally somebody who believes its NOT the number of clear coats that make it glossy.
So many "expert answers " good recovery from a disaster. With enough clear any paint job could be shined up . Well done good video
End result il admit was spot on but the process was long winded. Realistically that same gloss can be achieved by 1500, 2000 (or 3m trizact 3000 disc is my choice) then compound then buff. The meguires paint correction shouldn't be needed and never wax fresh clear coat for the first 4 weeks after painting as you risk locking solvents in under the wax since they can't escape. This can destroy your paint as the clear gasses out solvents for up to 4 weeks. Cheers
callum matheson Interesting info. I usually wait 2 days after applying clear coat before I apply wax and I'm happy with the results. Is it because I could be using a better product?

Also never cover a freshly painted surface with poly sheet in an attempt to keep dust off your new paint job for the same reason.
It can cause micro blisters, so you'd end up having to strip it all off again to start over.
Great info, fren. Thanks.
Ah
You must be blind there was still sanding swirls and little craters all over.
I watched the previous film to this when the car was painted from white to black . The fella stood on the roof of the car, poured 2 gallons of Hammerite over the car and just cut the drips off at the bottom when it dried 😂
Everyone knows that's the best way to do it :)
@@ArcanePath360 Well that's only if you want a professional job.
@@deer8949 Funnily enough I've done stuff like this in the past, when painting metal frames, a guitar or anything small. Hammerite is great shit for laying on thick without any undercoat or smoothing and just leaving to gloss up.
If some of the guys in these comments are so good, why are they even watching this video? My first paint job came out much worse and at least now I am a little closer to knowing how to rescue it in the future. Thanks for sharing this video.

There aren’t any cats knocking full glasses of water off the table, or wearing slippers....no kids hitting their dad in the balls in a sports related accident....it’s not even funny at all...so, this probably isn’t something I watched for the entertainment value........since I have the same, or similar problem, I’m going mimic the instructions here in an attempt to “DIY.” If this guy & Siri can do it, I can certainly trust them. Surely no one would ever put this much effort into creating a DIY video if these products & methods only serve to make the situation MUCH worse?”
Then what? They just go to Walmart, or Auto Zone, or whatever...and buy all of these materials, and attempt it on their own?!?! Who does that?? Like, who doesn’t have $300 to pay a body shop to get you that “super high gloss clear coat” like the guy in this video did for the car in this video?

I genuinely thought it looked good and I might follow these steps for my S10 with faded red paint
I finished my today with 600 grit 1500 grit and 3000 grit all in wet sand all the time by hand, don’t leave it dry when working on. Polish = wool + tru-grit / 3 types of foam pad + CarPro Essence Xtreme Gloss Enhancer, will see the amazing results.
Only 3 passes with 2000 grit is nessasary. Using lower grit will cause scratches that the rotary polisher will struggle to get out making the job 10x harder than it should be. Great results in the end 👍
How many passes with the 1000 grit
I have managed to compile all the useful info I have gleaned from the comments of various vids on bodywork:
Apply filler to any cracks etc in item.
Sand item with 400 sandpaper.
Spray some primer over item. 3 coats. Light coat. Wait 20 - 30 mins then another heavier coat, 30 mins wait then final coat.
Wet sand with 600 wet and dry to ensure smooth finish pre painting. Let dry.
Spray the item. 3 coats. Light coat. Wait 20 - 30 mins then another heavier coat, 30 mins wait then final coat.
If desired, wet sand with 800 preferably by hand with sanding block and let dry.
Apply clearcoat - preferably 2K. Minimum 3 coats. Not too light. Not too heavy.
Allow ample time to dry (at least 24 hours)
Wet sand the clearcoat with 2000/2500/3000/5000 by hand with sanding block (or just 3000 and 5000 if finish is already nice and smooth.) Be gentle.
Rub with rubbing compound preferably with a machine but by hand if necessary. Be gentle.
Buff off.
Then apply a polish preferably with a machine.
Buff.
Wait a few weeks before applying wax to give the clearcoat time to release all chemicals.
Wet sand eyeballs with 9000 grit sanding block so you can see clearer.
When someone tells you you did something wrong, dry sand their head with 1 grit paper aka a rock.
This is the great answer and works even if you make few mistakes. I do apply a clear coat after sanding with 1500Grid
How long actually we have to wait for fresh clearcoat to cut and polishing?
@@fyzallyfe2210 At least 24 hours preferably.

hey man i know your comment is a little old (lol) but i have a couple questions... so i sprayed my car with acrylic urethane paint and im not sure if i must apply a clear coat or if the shine is already in the paint?!?! hope you see this and can help me!!!
I understand that some clear coats are trash specially if you spray out of a can. But if your going to spray out of a can atlease use a 2k clear coat. You gotta let the clear cure for about a week then you can start to wet sand with a 1500 grit. Using a sponge as a pad for your sand block. Then use 2000 grit finally use a 2500 grit. Then you can use a compound cutting from meguiars by using a buffer/polisher. Then use polish, wax, and finish wax.
only wax 1 month after applying clear coat
@@user-iv7ew1jd8p I understand that sometimes you should wait a month till you sand down but if you wait a month the clear hardens and it's way more tough to sand it down. It all depends how much orange peel you get from using the clear coats too. There's too many pros and cons during painting process
@@jonathantenorio8829 lol 2k clear out of a spray can its hard to spray.. u need to be experienced and even then i think u will get a orange peel
Great job, don't let these loosers with their hate spoil your video. The results speak for themselves, keep it up!
Had a small area do this after applying my 2K clear when I installed a new corner panel on my JK. Not too noticeable since it’s gonna be covered by the license plate bracket. But may try to correct doing something similar. I feel like 800 might be a little too rough to use.
I would be very happy to end up with a result like that , considering how it looked at the start..
Great job I dont have a power tool and just spent 4 hours sanding and polishing my cars fender
I would say you could throw in Meguiars polish after the compound. That’s how I did my car for a full detail. Then top it off with the liquid wax. Still a fantastic job! I’m gonna attempt this on my wheels with a rattle can job.
Good video for common garage paint jobs. I am very envious of those paint shops with climate control, Air exhaust systems, humidity and dew point controlled. Heavily filtered and climate controlled compressed air coming to gun. However, It's good to see a person use same products as those shops use, when things go wrong.
this is simple and straight forward just what i needed to see. the comments below suggest use up to 3000 to 4000 grit..even 5000 to help with the polishing? also dont go lower than 1000 grit.. but the video seems pretty simple 800, 1500 then 2500.
Thanks a million! Just what I needed.
Just sand it with 1000 - 2000 - 3000, and use 3m polish, and for a perfect shine after a regular polish use a ultimate compound polish
using high solids (expensive) clear coat gives you a HUGE leap forward and prevents runs and make it a LOT more glossy using the exact same techniques as production (cheaper clear) however we cant use that on every job but if you're doing a home or one off project, USE THE HIGH GLOSS clearcoat it will make you feel like a better painter
Do you have any recommended products or brands?

Did u use a dual action polisher for this or an orbital sander? And what speed setting
I admire this guy...well done brother
Ive just dun my rear gti defuser ill do this even tho its already like glass. Good video. N well done painting all that cheaply.
I cringed at the fact that the door took a beating on the sanding and was not part of the process. Open the door(for those who are going to do this)
The door isn't done yet if you look at it at the ending, he would do the same on that panel. He even said to do this 1m² at a time.
Looks amazing!
Great job ! Rear wing looks better than the rear door.
Thanks this turned out beautifully!
This is a great video ... Having to lightly sand and buff with compound is actually pretty easy . Once this is done it is permanent . Other than normal wear and test on paint that just happens over time
Looks very nice!
bro i love u for this im about to go try it right now i have the same problem
Nicely done!!
Thanks for your kind wishing you all the best
Sometimes 800 grit is necessary when the painter applies some really hard clear haha I recommend testing finer grits first before going straight to 800 grit
It came out good would this work with a high gloss finish that doesnt have clearcoat
Great job. Spray on the clear like the surface of the moon then sand 99% of it off with harsh abrasives. Awesome!
Ha ha ha
Wow👍🏻 thanks for the video..amazing
This radical sanding might work on black, white, or basic solids, red, yellow or blue. But on a mixed color, especially a silver or gold hue, there is a very likely chance you will get a highlighted edge which is impossible to acceptably repair without repainting the area edge to edge. Easy on a fender, not so much on a door.
Wow nice. Can you make a video about how you blended the paint and clear coat to the existing paint ? You have a lot of videos - organizing them into playlists would make them easier to find. Thanks
Very nice, thank you!
Do you need only to sand clear coat? Or do you need to wet sand base and paint itself too?
Wow truly amazing.
Brilliant video!
Precisely what I needed to see, and clearly showed all steps.
Massive thanks man, definitely a huge help to me.

don't let anything but fear and common sense stand in your way.
All you need is 1500 + 3000 and buff it down with a wool pad with compound then use some Polish with a foam polishing pad then go back over it with a swirl remover with a softer foam pad
Excellent video
End results were fantastic
I tried clear coat today on my entire hood, but the weather was too hot, and the clear coat dried too fast, giving me a sandy finish. I could get a smooth finish only in spots. I'd appreciate help from other viewers. Should I sand with 800 first, or do you recommend another grit?
I seen 1000 recommended in a video and one guy up there said start less abrasive then go stronger as you won't scuff up the finish as easy maybe your case the 800 WOULD be beneficial I'd say start 1000 then go to 800 if you think you need it
how many products are you going to use man😂
Did the plastic you used to protect the garage floor blow up into the wet paint or something? I have NEVER seen an alligator skin paint job before. How the hell did you get it sooo bad? My son is a car painter and matches the orange peel texture on the panel he is painting to the rest of the car so you can't tell it was painted. It is all in the quality of gun, air pressure and so on.
Very nice work sir
Brilliant thank you

Thanks. Couple of questions:
How long do you allow the color coats to dry before coats of your Clears? Rustoleum company specialists say to wait only 10 to 15 minutes between each coat of any product...but their canned sprays do NOT advise this. It's very annoying.
2. Have you tested or used Rustoleum's Universal Gloss Clear Hammered spray by chance?
I recently sprayed 3 car body panels with Rustoleum Navy Blue Gloss Enamel (2 coats over 1-coat Gloss Blue paint+primer) and let dry for 40 minutes from last coat. Then I applied the Clear Enamel. First coat was very light, No blistering. Waited 30 minutes, 2nd coat, a little wrinkle in 4 places. Waited 9 hours, 3rd coat...it got worse! 4th coat 30 minutes later...even worse. 😆 Ruined my perfect rattle can spray job...it had zero runs or drips. Now I will have to wet sand all 3 car panels and apply something else to cover up the fail. I'm curious if the Clear Hammered product would help cover this and some body defects by reflecting light differently, as it does. If so, I'd use it on the whole car, as it has little chips and gouges here and there...27 year old work car.
I called the company, they said ALL layers of paint must be applied within 1 hour from start time, or the user must wait 48+ hours to start the 1 hour application window again. Their cans don't describe the 1 hour criteria like their agents do though. Bad written directions.
Thanks again. Feel free anybody to chime in.
There are many factors involved in calculating drying times. However, generally speaking off years of experience, rustoleom is my worst nightmare. The only times I've ever experienced similar problems to the one you mention was when using rust-oleum. As for the hammered product, your assumption is correct. It definitely will assist you in hiding the imperfections you mentioned. Good luck.
Doesn’t all hammered paint dimple? Pull away a bit to create the hammered effect?
Beautiful result
Good video mate, they use alot of pads an fresh cloths to do the whole car haha I have a box of dirty ones.
Thanks alot
Think is tho u have to always wax it now. Did u put a clear coat on or just gloss black.
What about edges of the door? It's pretty easy to sand through the clear coat and the paint with the machine and 800 grit..
Do it by hand and be very careful.
Good instructions but some constructive criticism. Before even applying clear make sure the shiny spots from the paint are gone or at least even throughout
Just a question… If you spread 3 layers of clear coat and then you are doing this actually you are removing a layer from the 3?
What about using a 3000 would that be better if you’re doing it by hand 🖐🏽
Good job...!🤘🤘🤘
The car reflection was hazy after wetsand wipedown. But when you cut to the compound clip, the reflection was already clear before you did any compound. I didn't see where you fix the haze at in the video, it just was fix by the next clip.
