  • Dogfighting air-to-air and achieving a 'kill' is art as well as science. Mike "Rocket' Blackstone describes how to perform BFM is in the 1 v. 1, guns only, similar aircraft arena. Learn how to use the fixed reticle WWII gunsight. Learn what the 'saddle' | 'control zone' is to deploy the guns. Learn how to know when you are inside the control zone and what your range is. Learn how tell how close you are to the target aircraft nose to tail separation. Learn how to control the closure using lead, lag and pure pursuit curves. What is your best first move at the merge on a neutral, high aspect left to left pass?

Thanks Mike! Just getting into combat flight sims and these lessons are immediately valuable. Lots to practice!

Thank you for the clear and concise information. It would be great if you get into DCS with another player and make videos about dogfighting the different aircraft and demonstrating the theory

Ima be honest, I'm watching this for DCS. But, I always had my timing off as to when to reverse the turn safely, now I kinda understand how to use the reversal better. In DCS I've always heard reversing infront of their nose is a death sentence (And it is), so I just never really used it unless forced.

Ideally you want to reverse when your bandit is pulling lead. Depending on his closure, you may or may not be succesful in doing so. Remember that your reversal is you basically trying to pull the bandit into a one-circle fight, so theoretically and potentially any angle of attack switch that breaks their lead enough and lets you offset the pursuit curve at the same time, is a good reversal.

@@noyrz Yeah I’ve learned reversals now, thanks though.

Think of it like this. You have a 90 degree angle which starts at the tail and extends backwards. Your planes angle from the tail of the plane is the aspecs, so if you are at 45 degrees on that attack course then you aspect is 45 degrees. Your aspect rises and falls based on your potition on that 90 degree angle. Dogfighting is a lot of geometry and a lot of angles.

You should talk about the energy menverabilty egg

Correction: (6:40) The ammo rounds that you can actually see are called 'tracer' rounds. They are built with a pyrotechnic device that burns white hot in their base to help the shooter see where the rounds are going. This dramatically helps the shooter to aim the gun. It also helps the target aircraft to detect and avoid the shooters attack solution.

Dont worry about the keyboard wariors, you explained the subject very well in an un edited video which is rare these days. Thank you sir

    Man this video ia great.
The infinitely small circle concept in the vertical blew my mind. Thank you.
    More please!

I dunno, guys. Mike's not sporting an epic fighter pilot 'stache, so I have to question is teachings! Pete Bonanni would like to have a word with you about that, Mike.

Thanks for the comment...Unfortunately my fighter pilot 'stache is a no go item. It's way too gray for anyone to enjoy! Especially me. Enjoy Part 2!

Well what you tried to say there about light up bullets those are tracer rounds, and those are due the pyrotechnic compound/composition that is ignited by the burning powder and burns quite bright, making round trajectory visible, so here is part that you missed badly, hope it helps pall!
    Cheers 👋🏻

Instructors are human and it is not unusual for them to sometimes fumble trying to recall some information. We do the same when we are in conversation and are unable to recall someones name or something. Unlike many who shows themselves off as perfect, editing videos, this video is un edited. Have some respect for those who share their knowledge for free

You should talk about « energy managing »: altitude/speed
    Reality is more complex
    Thanks anyway
