Newegg claimed that the pins on our motherboard were bent (even though we never even opened it), then when we called them out, they claimed there was "thermal paste" on the socket. They fought tooth and nail to deny our $500 refund, apparently making up new stories at every corner. Newegg might try this on all motherboards, but has special leeway to do it on open box products. Don't buy them. We will be avoiding Newegg as much as we can for all future motherboard purchases (and purchases in general). It's unacceptable that everything was magically refunded and sent back and resolved after we tweeted publicly, yet we got no support when acting as a normal customer.

I had the same story before with a $700 purchase. I found a better deal and canceled it 5 seconds after I ordered. They sent it anyways and so when it arrived I returned it at the door. The package was never in my custody. It was sent back and they never sent a refund and refused to over a month span. I started a three way call with my bank and got the issue resolved. Their excuse was that it was stuck in shipping and was my fault. You may need to do the same through your bank and I recommend doing so.
I ordered my Phantex P300a mesh case from them, it got lost in transit for a few days. I filed a missing claim and ordered from amazon. I ended up with 2 cases, because I thought I would never receive the case from newegg. I ended up selling the extra case. I had one bad experience, now I am not buying from them again. Never had any issues from amazon, I had an ssd that I bought from amazon, it died 1 week after use. I sent it back and got a refund no questions asked. I will be doing my shopping on amazon from now on
I used their mobile app today (UK based). Clicked on their 'Build configurator' .. selected 'Enthusiast (from £3400ish)' .. then selected 'Intel'.. I was then presented with a template 'list' of components. It had a GTX 1650 (@ £279 or so). WTF..... !!!! Where's all the cost.... oh on some 2TB 'solution' costing £1900 ish..... Whhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!!!!
They are owned by the Chinese Communist Party via Lianlou Smart Limited, and Newegg is the 800 pound guerrilla in tech shopping unless you, by some act of God, have a Microcenter nearby. Newegg needs to be broken up under anti-competitive laws.
Newegg is Chinese owned you know.

They're not "sorry" for what happened, they're sorry they got caught and exposed.
Nothing will change.
As Rihanna once said:
Don't tell me you are sorry cuz youre not
When I know you're only sorry you got caught
Bingo!
A lot of times this comes from the higher-ups or owners of the company not caring. This trickles down all the way to the bottom of the chain. Even if the lower level employees themselves care about the customers.. they're told to focus on other things involving making money.
I will never buy another thing from Newegg. That's a change.
They'll keep porking people without a platform, which is why we appreciate outlets like Gamers Nexus
I'm actually impressed that one guy on twitter thinks its reasonable to make a postman wait well you open a product and look it all over. His postmen must hate him
It's one thing to have a quick look over the box to make sure it doesn't have massive dents or holes in it, but it's a whole other to have them wait while you check if the product works.
@@gnomeam I took down the sign instructing to ring the doorbell for deliveries, because not one person rang the doorbell. Like hell the postman is gonna hang around supervising me to open and inspect a delivery item.
This comment is under-rated.
He never said you have to make the mailman wait there while you open and inspect the pins. Where did he say that? 🤦♂
It's the delivery couriers policy in my country. They are paid to wait
I started laughing so hard when you started talking about inspecting 2000 pins while the delivery guy waits
"Hold on, delivery guy - I need to make sure it POSTs! I just need to apply the thermal paste, mount the CPU and cooler, and stick some ram in it, and wait for the other delivery guy to bring the PSU"
I love how when Steve starts getting really heated there’s a cut. There’s footage somewhere of this man really telling Newegg in detail where they can put that $500.
Right in the middle of the Conclusion section, they should've cut in two seconds of Steve unbuckling his belt while squatting over over a printout of the the RMA email while he screams "THIS IS WHAT I THINK YOU LYING PI--" and then cut right back to the rest of the conclusion.
i would pay GPUS to see that footage haha
I was going to make the exact same comment.
Yup.
Hahahaha
Steve's angry smile is only slightly less happy than his happy smile.

I once managed to accidentally scam Newegg. When I was first building my pc (2020), I ordered sleeved cable extensions from them and someone somehow put my shipping label on the wrong package so I was a bit shocked when I got an rtx 2060 in the mail. Needless to say, I reordered the cables, I got a 2060 for about $50, and I resold the 1660ti I ordered days before.
Luck build strats
Would have been great if the second order was also a 2060.
Eee I hate to think what happened to that poor employee lmfao. I've done that when shipping small Etsy orders, I can't imagine the disorganization needed to fuck that up in a big business.
Is that a legit course of action in the USA? ... I could assume it is if Newegg CBA to contact you and request a return. If they had done that, I am pretty sure you would have had to.
(I remember some ancient stuff on this topic about credit cards sent unrequested.)
That's not scamming. That's someone in Newegg's Shipping department not doing their due diligence on making sure the right shipping label goes with the product they are sending out who is likely a third-party vender/shipper.
I have actively avoided buying from Newegg for nearly a decade. My tolerance for bad business practices is really low, so I got out early. I'm astonished how bad they've gotten.
I've made 3 purchases from new egg and 2 of them they sent me broken parts
Wild, I remember back in like 2012 they were the go to for ordering PC parts.
Wouldn't order from them nowadays under any circumstance.
@@akridercolton1 Who do you order from?
Weird. I've bought from NE for years, never had the slightest problem. Even bought a 2060 Ti right before the 30 series came out, returned it, no problems. Recommended them to my cousin when he was looking to buy some SSDs. His business warehouse is addressed funky, they got delivered to the wrong place. NE didn't hesitate, sent him new SSDs without any problem. Truth be told, no company can always be perfect, and satisfy everyone. That's just life
Thank you Steve. These companies would be perfectly happy doing this to regular people. Little did they know they fucked up doing this to a prominent PC media outlet.
Absolutely, perfectly said
100%. They thought they were doing a routine ripoff return denial to a "regular" customer, but landed on a business that specializes in this stuff. So upsetting that they do this to people with little recourse.

@@GamersNexus Hate to say it, but they wont care about this. They'll issue the standard 'misunderstanding/mistake/sorry/circumstances dictated' message and continue this crap. I'd bet money on it. Can i just say thank you? Instead of taking their filthy bribe money you chose to look out for us who dont have a leg to stand on. THANK YOU AND YOUR TEAM. Good health and well wishes to you and yours this Christmas!
As for "inspect the box while the postal worker is still there"...
I have lived in several countries, from Canada and the US to several European countries. Never have postal workers or deliveries people waited long enough for us to open and inspect computer related material. Ever.
They deliver and they go. If you're lucky, you can be there for the delivery. That's it.
Steve is right.
And yet it seems that is still official theoretical policy, obsoleted by time pressures for sure. But long ago there weren't abundant video cameras you could use to film unboxing. I guess back then businesses simply typically trusted the customer more, although I also remember exceptions from that.
I remember the first time I asked a UPS driver to wait while I opened and inspected an expensive item. He literally laughed at me and said he had no idea who I'd been talking to but they don't do that. You can refuse to accept the package due to visible exterior damage, that's it. They literally do not care if the interior is damaged because once you open it, they aren't responsible anymore.
There's videos of postal workers sprinting from the door so they can get to the next delivery - no fucking shot he's standing there well they "count the pennies"
In Australia they won't even ring the bell or knock on the door even if you're home 😊
This makes me incredibly angry. As a normal customer you’d be almost completely out of options. Thank you for doing this, Steve!
Yep, sooooo scummy.... Get lost, stupid customer, we took your money now we're done with you.
Thanks steve
Sorry you voided your ability for a class action when you purchased and agreed to our terms and services that included binding arbitration....
Yes, I would do a charge back from my credit card company if you used a credit card, but they would likely ban you as a customer after that, but at least you get your money back.
@@rdizzy1 Who cares if you'd get banned? You just don't do business with shady companies like this one.
I was working as a customer service rep for Newegg a few years back when the brand new X399 motherboard that I bought from them was rejected by the RMA department manager himself. He said the pins of the USB port were bent upon inspection. But I never even took the motherboard out of the box. One of his tech guys told me he didn't like the fact that I was returning a MSI mb for an ASUS mb, and that I, as an employee of the company, was taking advantage of his department. If they can treat their own employees like that, what kind of recourse does a regular customer have?
death
wow never using newegg again
Newegg is just another Chinese company now.
@@notagooglesimp8722 Actually, that's the opposite. Newegg was founded by a Taiwanese, he then took the company public in the NYSE. The owner/major shareholder spends most of his time in Taiwan and China. But the main US and Canadian operation is run by Americans. In fact, the guy who took over fired the VP of operations and the manager who rejected my RMA and laid off a bunch of customer service reps. That was back in 2018. Things may have changed again by now.
ftc fraud reports. they're easy
That’s hilarious they expect the mailman to stand around while they open a box and inspect the contents. They have hundreds of houses to deliver to.
My mailman won't even take mail out of my box that doesn't go to my house when I'm standing there showing him it's not my mail
wow, that's a really crappy mailman then, i'd report that if i was you
It makes me wonder whether this actually was feasible at some point and got obsoleted by ever-increasingly insane time pressures of the business.
One of the happiest days of my life was when an employee in the build your own section of my local Microcenter told me they would match Newegg prices. That was years ago. Now their prices are right there. It's nice to be able to shop locally and not have to deal with an anonymous person via email/phone if there's an issue.
Yep got my last computer at frys (rip) and they tested and built it for me in case any malfunctioning parts
I have the exact opposite story. I went to my local retailer(plaisio) and asked them if they could match the newegg price , they told me to buy it from Newegg then and were quite mad at me. I ended up buying it out of peer pressure and because it was available immediately.
Yeah, it's easy to tell if someone is genuine in-person.
MicroCenter is wonderful and I love them dearly.
The only place I love more, is Crutchfield but they refuse to price match. Even against big box brick and mortar.
They’re the best to work with tho. They do offer solid deals and their customer service is the absolute best.
This sounds to me like an elaborate scam from the werehouse employees. The most concerning part to me is the fact they don't return said "damaged" products, which leads me to think that they keep them for themselves. A lot of people should be fired for this.
Or, and hear me out, it's part of their internal corporate policy. Unwritten rules and all that.
I read earlier today that an Amazon warehouse manager got busted running a scheme where he ended up with over a quarter million dollars in merchandise (PC parts, mostly) and resold them. He got sentenced for it, today or yesterday I think. May have just officially presented charges against him, I only skimmed it.
I wouldn't be surprised if the same things going on here, though.
@@werewolfmoney6602 i was also thinking this
1000% this. Amazon warehouses/drivers have been getting busted more and more for the same thing. Having worked in retail/food as well as been around sketchy people my whole life, the warehouse/support was my first thought in this whole scheme.
I don't think they would take them everything is tracked. even after it leaves the warehouse to a return center, the return center makes up pallets and sells those off to someone else. Everyone has a bad day and screws something up , being honest about might cost them their entire job but lying keeps the blame off any one person. Its not right but likely the cause.
Supporting GN because of a willingness to call companies out is why I’m considering buying merch I don’t actually need.

LOL facts!
Plus: Every time I needed to do a RMA, Newegg customer support made the process almost unbearable. Many times I had to 'escalate' my request to 'supervisors' that tried every trick in the book to stop my RMA. Nine out of ten times this was done when I was retuning Unopened items. The HDD enclosure was just the last straw in a long line of poor support from Newegg.
Again, Newegg is the Last Place on earth one should consider buying anything from, I trust Alibaba more than I do Newegg!
This is unacceptable. When they sell "Open Box" items, Newegg should definitely take photos of that opened item as proof of it's condition before selling it. I no longer plan to buy from Newegg from this video.
They also sell open box or used items as new, I suspect (happened to me a few years ago, doubt it was accident). Especially motherboards, but possibly anything else without a manufacturer seal.
It isn't just NewEgg, I bought a supposedly new 5600XT from a shop in Australia (before prices got crazy). When I opened the box the anti static bag seal was broken, the card was scuffed and it didn't work properly - overheated and blue screened constantly. Luckily they didn't argue over me returning it and sent me a working replacement after a few weeks.
I'm a seller on Ebay with like three sold items ever, and even I would document the item's actual condition to the buyer before they buy it, and would attempt to do at least minimal basic cleaning before sending ti to them and would never send it with pubes sticking out.
The fact a damaged motherboard ever passes open box certification is ridiculous. If it was missing the CPU socket shield, that's also terrible they certified it. They know that has to be there, it's an instant rejection for RMA and has been for a decade.
How photos would change the situation? If they want to scam they can upload good quality stuff pictures and then when you'll return it they'll say that it isn't the motherboard they sent you, that you changed it, etc.
It’s crazy. Newegg could’ve been the “Target” to Amazon’s “Walmart” but ended up deciding to be the used car salesman of the tech world.
They got really shady after the original owners sold the brand. Feels like a pawn shop at this point.
@@Channel-gz9hm shit, They sold it? that and them being public traded explains everything. They used to focus on C/S now its to quote a classic rap tune, All About the Benjamins
BOOM, I like this. Pandemic style, surprised how many “free” items I’ve gotten because they’ve been broken and it cost more to ship back than to just write off. Thankful for companies like that! (Not abusing systems, just literally been told to throw, use, or donate an item that was “broken” but not unusable, like a pump on any bathroom item) edit: bathroom item, nothing specific, lol
Yep. For a time, they outdid Amazon with things like upgrading shipping for free so ground orders got 2-day instead. Newegg excelled at delivering beyond customer expectations and Amazon struggled for a long time to compete. Where Amazon won was by having warehouses everywhere and their ruthless pricing. Rather than try to fight that, Newegg went down a different, darker path. It is not the same company it once was.
I refuse to buy from Newegg since they sold me a broken prebuilt (it had GPU problems) with one of those potentially explosive Gigabyte PSUs. Sure I got a refund but they tried to dump a dangerous product on me! Sad thing is they may stick that PSU into another computer and sell it and kill another GPU or even worse set something flammable on fire and burn down a ton of stuff or kill someone! How are neither Gigabyte or Newegg getting in trouble for continuing to sell this product instead of doing a recall?!
I stopped shopping with them the moment I saw the price-gouging for the New Egg Shuffle, but now I'm going to start actively telling people to shop elsewhere. Absolutely ridiculous, predatory, negligent, and most likely malicious. Wow.

Even though I’ve never had any return issues with them, but knowing how severe this issue is, I don’t want to wait until it’s my turn. I’m no longer their customer either.
I was about to type something similar
I was a customer for 7 years before I was bit by this exact issue. Also 5 years ago, they will continue this practice.

Almost 10 years for me. I've spent several thousand dollars during that time and I'm done as well. I thought they were the less evil choice over amazon, but apparently that's not the case anymore. Has it been downhill since they sold out a few years ago? They used to be champions of frivolous patent suits.
Been a customer for 7 years, this has also happened to me, I’m relatively certain the hit rate is high if you ever attempt to rma motherboards in particular. Also, Newegg wont handle warranty or even doa most of the time and you’ll have to deal with the long process of contacting the manufacturer and sending products back to China yourself. Newegg has fallen far from grace
I made a huge oversight and ordered a ASUS mobo that was openbox. I get it and they don't include the backplate and its covered in used thermal paste. I call and was told too bad for me. I also notice the original RMA sticker is still on the bag and it says that its dead. I ask them to look up the RMA to find out the issue. Rep tells me that it was tested and in perfect working order. I build the entire pc to find out its dead. Now dealing with this lady in the chat who takes over 5 minutes to respond and isn't helpful at all. I hate myself for ordering from this company...
I appreciate all the hard work that has been put into this.
Newegg has definitely gone downhill - glad this is being talked about more widely
Newegg has always been scummy. It's just that we hear more reports now than 20 years ago because more people are buying computer parts and talking about their problems on social media. I stopped buying from the 20 years ago because they sold me a piece of shit and wouldn't refund it, and they've been in business 21 years.
@@lindasherman9921 I can’t say how they were 20 years ago, but the reason they have declined so much recently is because they were bought out by a Chinese company who basically cut all customer service budget and prioritized profit over all else, leading to a super shitty experience for their customers.

Newegg was once a California startup. It's now Chinese owned and gives zero fucks about it's customers.
The last time I orderd from Newegg, I purchased over a grand worth of equipment. The equipment never showed up on my doorstep despite Newegg stating it was delivered. I filed a police report and checked with UPS who claimed that it was never shipped to them despite me having a tracking number and a delivery notice from Newegg. Newegg refused to do anything abou this to make it right. And that was the last time I will ever buy from Newegg.
I basically experienced the same thing, the difference was that I had my delivery stole from my door and they closed my support claim because i didnt have a police report at the time of filing and refused to reopen the claim. It took the threat of a chargeback and the police report to get a replacement. I told support they should have 1. unmarked boxes after X amount of money 2. After X amount of money they should default to having clients sign for the package to avoid theft.
They used to be good before they got bought out.
As a Brit, I am absolutely amazed by the US delivery system! Our delivery peeps will knock for any package that doesn't fit through the letter box (we don’t have a box at the end of our drive/garden like you guys, we have a hole in the door xD) and if you don’t answer, they’ll try give it to a neighbour and post a note through your door saying who has it so you have proof and your neighbour can’t screw you.
If the neighbour doesn't answer, they post a different card through your door telling you to collect the item from your nearest depo. And the delivery person will take it back to that depo.
This is ALL types of deliveries whether it’s tracked or basic second class 😅
And it’s all companies as well.
AND! If you can’t collect you can request a redelivery 😂
Other than the police report I experienced the same thing with a CPU. $500 down the drain, fuck, Newegg.

I bet they took his broken motherboard, lied about sending it back to him, and literally sold it again to the next "sucker" they could scam.
thanks for being the best at always calling out companies without worrying about relations with them and fear of not getting a sponsor from them, keep it up
A nearly identical situation involving a motherboard happened to me 10 years ago with Newegg. Haven’t done business with them since. Nice to see they’re up to their same old tricks.
I've been a Newegg customer since 2012, and I stopped using them last year when this very issue happened to me in a nearly identical way... unopened packaging returned and rejected due to "damage". I am glad this is coming to light finally. Thank you.
Did they send it back? And if so, what damage was it? Did it look faked like someone purposely rubbed something on the socket? Or like a noob f'ked it up?
I have seen people damage motherboards, but not as commonly as they're claiming. I sent like 100 back to Dell over 8 years doing repairs in an office and never had one returned. I know of co workers who damaged boards and got them returned, so this really does look like a scummy Newegg issue.
@@volvo09 they did send it back to me. No idea if the damage was done on purpose by them, and I'm not claiming it was. My main issue is they knew the box wasn't opened, so how was I responsible? I chalked it up to lesson learned and have simply never bought from them since.

"You should open up everything in front of the postman" is an example of someone finding anyway possible to take the side of Newegg, it's kind of insane.
I'm assuming it's someone who has staff and never actually receives anything themselves. They just assume that their staff are opening every package and checking the contents in front of the delivery person.
Which also does nothing though, as the postman is not an employee of newegg. Theyd merely claim they couldnt trust the postmans word. Thats a bad excuse to try to use on a zenders part.
If there's one thing to know about any parcel service in the US, including USPS, it's that there's no way the carrier would be allowed to stand there that long without getting in trouble.
when i recive a packet not deliverd to my door but at the post office I have to sign for it before I open it and at that point I have asumed respncebilety that I got I want I wanted from the post service, its sign for and they are done.
Literally one of the absolute dumbest takes I have ever seen. In addition to the reasons Steve gave, even if you somehow got a delivery person to stand there and watch you open and inspect it; their testimony would make zero difference to NewEgg and their "assessment."
I "won" the Newegg lottery for a 3080ti video card in November. When the card arrived it was in an opened box with all of the documentation and accessories missing. Luckily when I saw that the box it was in was closed with packing tape and was generally damaged I recorded my opening of the box. They attempted to claim that it was impossible that the item was previously sold I sent the video to them. They accepted the RMA and around two weeks later I got an actual new card.
wow im definitely recording opening cards like that.

Thank you Steve! :) Keep on Keeping on...
I regret buying stuff of Newegg this week... I ordered 4 packs of 32GB Silicon Power DDR4 RAM, 100% failure rate. All of them were failed. I tested them in a working motherboard. I bought two new Gigabyte motherboards from Newegg and neither of them would post, nor would they even give an error code using a 4 pin speaker. Really crazy that they shipped so many DOA items. I sent the items back and waiting for them to respond. Hopefully I don't get screwed even though I feel already screwed by them. A guy in my work actually bought a motherboard that was also DOA and they refused to take it back.
the fact they refunded you after finding out who you are actually bothers me more than the fact they cornholed you to begin with. step one was shady, step two was mega-overdrive-sleeze-factor > 9000
Yeah I'm more bothered by the second part, too. Step one was to f**k one customer, but their step 2 was to f**k every other customer!
Yeah, that MB is gonna cost Newegg a lot more than $500. Thanks for letting their customers know.
They're basically "all sales are final" in practice. And Steve, so glad this happened to you.
This makes me sad… I bought the parts for my first PC build from Newegg, back in the day when it seemed like 90% of online parts dealers were scams. Over the years they’ve given me amazing customer service, but I guess they’ve decided it’s not worth the effort to keep existing customers
I decided to never shop at New Egg again when THEY decided to scalp video cards with the shortage. Then it was even more laughable when they created the Shuffle... forcing customers to buy stale un-needed products along with products marked up 20-60% because of demand.
I hope this causes them to go the same path as Fry's Electronics... out of business
Best Buy just sells to scalpers anyways
glad I never "won" the shuffle

Ebay sellers now qualify for the "Better then newegg" award.
That's a HUGE statement right there!
I sold plenty of stuff on ebay, and yeah, since there is a 30 day return policy and Ebay goes in to settle disputes, it's actually safer to buy stuff from eBay. Nevermind the fact, that any open box or used /refurbished item I posted the actual item's pictures, so the customer knows exactly what they're getting and I have done many "can you photograph the other side" -sort of requests too.
Have had better luck with ebay than newegg
Newegg actually has an eBay storefront for certain items, meaning it’s possible to have eBay step in before someone at Newegg tries to pull shit
between ebay protections and paypal protections it is SO much better then newegg.
Thank you so much for this video! My first computer build was in 2018 and I’m getting ready to do another one. I vaguely remembered Newegg had some a few issues years ago selling open box items as new so I decided to search to see if that was just a one off situation. Apparently not and I will definitely not be giving Newegg any of my money. It’s just not worth the chance or aggravation dealing with scam like tactics from a large company.
The "You should open and verify the package" thing could be from people in other countries. I have talked to people overseas where that is the standard practice, and when I told them how it works here in the US, they didn't believe me at first. So, it could be cultural/regional differences there.
Seriously, the delivery people never wait anyways. Even if I open the door 10 seconds after hearing the knock or doorbell, they’re already driving off. I get it though, they’re super busy.
GN: "If you make the very busy delivery person stand there while you open the box and inspect 2000 pins, you're an a** hole."
So well said I can't even handle it.
Yea. Those guys are in a dead run delivering from daylight to dark; they dont have time to sit there and watch you inspect a product.
I always find it strange when companies pick these kinds of hills to die on. Customer spends tens of thousands of dollars with us? Let's screw them on a fairly small purchase so badly they'll never shop with us again!

This is the second newegg horror story I've heard in a period of 12 hours, a user in my patron discord server won one of their shuffle things to get a gpu and monitor the winning email notification arrived 2 hours late... and apparently it's a pretty widespread thing.
I got my 6800XT from a Newegg shuffle in March of last year. I remember I got the notification email for it literally an hour before the shuffle expired. Luckily I was in a position to actually go through with the purchase before the timer ran out, but it was still a pretty shit experience. The confirmation email of the order didn't even come until an hour or two after the shuffle ended so there was a period of time where I was stressing over whether Newegg was going to screw me out of $1100

Man, it's crazy how hard Newegg has fallen. I remember in the early 2000s that Newegg was pretty much the only recommended e-tailor to buy from because of their amazing customer service and good prices. All that is gone now. Imagine spending so much time building up a great name just to throw it away for no reason whatsoever.

Always the 3rd party sellers. I had to email Newegg three times for them to wring the neck of the seller to refund my money on a non-working monitor. Took 2 weeks of back and forth just to get my money back. Never trusting 3rd parties on that website ever again.
i had a similar issue, someone was selling cheaper ram as more expensive, cause who actually inspects hundred dollar items.... they then pretended to not get the RMA.... and newegg had no issues with the fact the seller was actively scamming people.
This literally just happened to me. I didn't realize I was buying through a 3rd party until after the fact.
